Not sure if you were able to figure out your second question but I just solved that problem on my laptop today, I am also running Windows 7 64bit on a Studio XPS 1340. You will need to download and install the latest version of the DELL QuickSet software which is R272666 - QuickSet v9.6.21, A07. You can find it at the DELL Support website by entering the Service Tag Number from your laptop, that's how I found it for mine. Good luck!

The answer is no. You can't control fan speed.

Try checking your temps. That might explain your constant high fan speed.

It will easier for other members here to figure your problem if you can give more info (ie, did you reinstall your OS? no audio after fresh install?)

    You are right.

So I did a fresh win7 install and since then I'm not getting any sound. I can get sound from headphones, hdmi but not speakers. I actually installed vista back just to see if my speakers are ok hardwarewise, and they worked with default drivers installed by vista. I installed win 7 back and they dont work again. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Might be due to wrong installation order of drivers. You could try the following order (worked flawlessly)

    chipsets
    - chipset
    - card reader
    video adapter
    application
    - Dell quickset
    audio
    ethernet controller
    synaptics touchpad
    bluetooth

PS: be sure to download the right drivers (Win7 64x)

Screen problem on startup with dell xps1340. My sxps just started a strange problem. When I boot, nothing appears on the screen, even prior to the OS loading. After it boots, if I close the lid and then open it, then sometimes a proper display appears. Sometimes this also happens if I just wait long enough. If I boot with a second monitor attached, then the graphics control panel does not show the internal display at all. Once I close and open the lid, it then appears in the graphics control panel and works OK. Sometimes, the internal display is not properly recognised and shows up as a 1024 x 768 analogue screen and displays as such on the internal monitor. I do not have sleep mode activated on the screen closing. I am guessing this is either a bios or hardware issue since non of the pre-windows screens appear on the internal monitor. I have the latest BIOS and graphics drivers installed.
Any help would be great!!! thanks

Ah, thanks for the response. The fan is always on full blast, no matter the temps. The temps are under 40C always.

Warranty just ran out :( guess I'll just live with the fan noise.

    Thanks anyways

    Hello Jim.

I would guess that either the lid-sensor or the actual power cable to the screen is in someway damaged or loose, and need to be replaced or at least checked. Or even worse is that the actual screen cables are damaged, or even the screen itself. But try to either call dell or open it up yourself and check the cables.

Thanks for the reply. I took a look and could not see any obvious loose or damaged cables. It is difficult to get into the screen assembly itself. Do you know if the cables can be accessed from the side hinges where the lights are or if the screen can be taken apart?

Also - do you know where the lid sensor is?

If anyone has any advice on the display issue with the 1340, I am desperate for an answer. I am having the exact same issue with this laptop.

I don't care about graphics performance, I just want the LCD to work every time I boot the computer, either on battery or plugged in. If disabling one of the hacked-together display adapters is what it takes to makes this happen, I will be happy to do it.

My 1340 finally died... lasted 1 year, 11 months, and 20-something days. It was a great laptop, I'm sad to see it go. The worst part is I don't know what happened to it. I press the power button and the multimedia keys flash to the right and left and the system powers down. I check the memory & hard drive but nothing gives and the video card never gave me any problems. I ran the system on a notebook cooler for the majority of its life. Cosmetically it's brand new, I wish it lasted longer.

Ironic, my 1340 does the same thing. Multimedia keys flash side to side and the screen will blink but won't power on. Happened last summer, I'm thinking about just buying a new motherboard. My laptop has the 9400m so this gives me an opportunity to buy a 9500m board, found one for 229-249.99.

Anyhow, here is my new problem. If I swap my 9400m to a 9500m board I will be missing the additional heat sink that wraps around the fan. I cannot find one anywhere, any thoughts?

I think I fixed it. I ran through Dell's service manual instructions for removing the display, then put everything back. In the process, I found the ground screw for the display was loose as hell. That would explain the intermittent and then complete failure of the laptop display, while the VGA port in the side would always work.

To anyone else with similar trouble, best of luck, and I hope this works for you, too.

Hi guys, i have an XPS1340.
Suddenly the built-in speaker volume has become very low, also at its higher value. The sound is barely hearable. This issue does not show if i use external speakers.

I was using IDT audio driver and Dell Wireless driver. I have read that someone fixed that issue changing audio and wlan driver. So i installed new drivers and now i am using Windows driver for audio and wlan, but the problem is still not fixed.

After the problem showed, palmster (with built-in speakers) and mobo have been replaced with new one, the problem still shows.

    Any suggestion?
    Ty

Has anyone been able to get the Studio XPS 13 to output audio via DisplayPort? I have the model with the 9500 graphics.

I can get audio over HDMI, no problem, but so far, not over DisplayPort. It seems like it's a limitation of this hardware?

That's a bit annoying, because I just got a new monitor (U2711) which can do 2560x1440 via DP, but only 1920x1080 via HDMI. So to drive this at native resolution, I still need to use another cable to transport audio.

I found this really useful guide to HDMI Audio on NVIDIA GPUs which says that for the MCP79 chipset, HDMI audio is broadcast to all connectors at once (which should also include DP connectors). So presumably on the 1340 the audio just isn't wired to the DP.

I tried to fudge around this by connecting a HDMI cable to the laptop's HDMI port, and then using a HDMI->DP adaptor to connect to the DP port of the monitor, but when I did that, the laptop didn't recognise that a monitor was connected. :(

    Hi guys,

I recently installed the new Nvidia 285.79 beta drivers and I have a big problem with those. I have a Dell XPS 1340 with 9500M (9200+9400) and with those drivers, my computer freezes at the logon screen for several minutes, I then have to wait 10+mins before I can use my comp. Plus, when I try to switch from "power-saving mode" to "high perf mode", my comp hangs.

Does any of you have this problem with this driver?

    Thanks a lot!

I installed the new Nvidia serial ATA driver when I upgraded to Seagate 750GB drive. That was a mistake. The driver caused the laptop to freeze often. R/W rate is down the toilet and after checking with forums, I realized I need the Intel drivers that would handle the new drives. The laptop is very slow now and the performance degradation has been validated with crystal disk info and crystal disk mark (2 apps that test disk performance)

I am looking to replace my DW 1515N wifi card. You're the only person I've found that can get an Intel nic to work in the Studio XPS 1340. (and i'm SO glad to hear it :) ) I really would like that card, but I just want to confirm that everything it still working smoothly for you and i'm wondering exactly what driver you found to work. I'm thinking of ordering the following card from amazon and don't think it will come with a driver CD, so i need to make sure the drivers are available.

    Amazon.com: Intel Ultimate N 633ANHMW IEEE 802.11n (draft) Wi-Fi Adapter - Mini PCI Express - 450Mbps, Bulk: Electronics

    Thanks!

    Don't do it!

I fudged the install and got it to work yes, but later on had problems and I removed the card. Essentially Intel doesn't support it, so you can't trust the Intel software to work with the Nvidia chipset (not worth the trouble).

Another issue is that the 6300 is really a triple-antenna card. You might want the 6200 series with just 2 antennae's.

I've tried several broadcam and atheros offerrings and sadly, my wireless-n performance is still just average a best.

If you find a good "dual-band" wireless-N card, let us know!

Just upgraded to PC3-12800 (DDR 1600). HWInfo64 and CPU-Z correctly identifies the memory as PC3-12800 but the machine is still running the memory at PC3-8500 (DDR 1066).

Anyone know what trick to use to make it run at PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333)?

I'm thinking about buying a 2560x1440 monitor but it seems that even modern notebooks have problems driving this res.

Can anyone confirm whether the SXPS 13 can drive this at native resolution via DisplayPort? (I have the 9500M).

    Thanks.

Hi guys, I joined specifically for this thread! Isn't that great news! I'll be trawling it for information on how to keep my ickle :realmad: 1340 to stop giving me a BSE whenever I do... anything. I swear I haven't done anything to it and its not Malware/viruses.

I also never get the same error even though I seem to be peaking at about 4 unexpected shut downs a day now. Pretty sure its something to do with the graphics card since Dell JUST put in a new HDD and all memory diagnostics show up clean. I'm hoping its not the new update from NVidia because I had to reinstall my OS after it came out and therefore have nothing to roll it back to.

    Some sample BSE errors:
    without specific driver information - 0DE 024 07E
    specific drivers - ntfs.sys and dxgmms1.sys.

Keep in mind these are the only ones I've been able to catch since it likes to wait until the door shuts to my dorm and I'm out of the room to crash.

    WIndows 8 Install,

Has anyone looked into installing Windows 8 on the XPS 1340?

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7 on mine and would like to try out Windows 8.

Part of the download procedure fo Windows 8 Pro Upgrade requires you to run the compatibily checker. This identified that the software used for my Broadcom Bluetooth adapter is incompatible. I went to the Broadcom website for a driver update, but they just refer you to your hardware provider, i.e. Dell. When I look on the Dell support site for the drivers for the bluetooth adapter the listed driver is dated 2009. I tried other routes on the Dell site for info on updating to Windows 8 and found nothing useful.

Can anyone else suggest where I might find driver software that supports Windows 8.

    Many thanks

    Geoff

Some tips for people wanting to upgrade to Windows 8

I've been on Windows 8 for about a month now. There are 3 problems I've run into:

    1) nvidia Graphics and Audio:
The latest driver (30x something) gave me some weird problems: After resume from Hibernation/Sleep it wouldn't recognize my external Monitor no matter what(plug out and back in, turn off and on, even WinButton+P trick didn't work). And sometimes the whole Laptop would just freeze for 5 mins then magically resume operation with windows telling me that the display driver stopped working and was recovered.
Furthermore Audio (I normally have it output via HDMI to my sound system with HDMI passthrough) would switch to onboard speakers or USB wireless headaphones after reboot/hibernation/sleep.

I tried out different older versions and 285.62 seems to work fine. It is not officially made for Windows 8, but it works unlike the ones certified for Win8.

    2) Synaptics Touchpad:
Most recent drivers enable multitouch gestures like 2finger scroll, pinch to zoom and stuff like momentum. But I can't get Synaptics Scrybe Gestures to work no matter what, which is annoying for me, since I got used to starting my programs with scrybe.

The best I could find are these: http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/synaptics/synaptics_touchpad_16.2.12.3(www.station-drivers.com).exe
They support Windows 8 Gestures like Charms bar (swipe in from left side) and app switching(swipe in from right side)

    3) Bluetooth 370 Card:
Since I almost never use BT, I've been living without those drivers for now. I've heard, that there are drivers for the 380 chip for Win8 that would work for the 370 too. I'll probably test that soon and report back.

EDIT: I tested the bluetooth driver and it really works:

    Maximum memory.

I currently have 4GB (2x2GB) RAM in my Studio XPS 1340.

Can I use 2x4GB RAM sticks to get 8GB in this computer?

I read that there is a 4GB limit on this laptop - is that true, and why would that be?

Crucial are offering an 8GB kit for this computer.

    Thanks

Just bought an 8GB RAM kit for this computer from Crucial Memory for £28.
Fitting it took 15 minutes, and all is working well.

I tried to upgrade to windows 8 Pro. But I still have trouble for dual video cards ( NVidia 9400M G and GeForce G 210M ). I tried out all different old version. In my case it appears to be much better when running on old display drive version V.285.62 . Only problem that I can not normally watch video files by windows 8 metro UI video player. And I also can not normally run windows experience index on windows 8. I got flicker screen and black screen or blue screen for other video drivers version. On the other hand, I can not adjust display screen brightness control normally. When I try to restart PC, then display screen brightness arrives 100% weirdly. May it is not compatible with old dell quickset driver. Does anyone else have same issues with video and quickset drivers on XPS 1340?
In my case it appears to be much better when running on old display drive version V.285.62 . The screen works fine under Windows 7 x64,can not run windows experience index on windows 7 either .It looks like it is a problem with the drivers for this configuration. Is this a known problem ? Any workaround/fix or schedule as to when a fix will be available ? It seems at this moment there is no update of Windows 8 beta drivers from NVIDIA for Hybrid SLI technology. Someone else know how to resolve this video driver issue for windows 8? Thx.....

    Hey,

Need help with windows 7 upgrade.
I've been looking through all the pages but I cant find any help with the drivers.

Recently bought a used xps 1340 for cheap, but it came with vista. I upgraded it to windows 7 and it works pretty well expect for the fact that the (1)sli is not working,(2) touchpad scroll does not work, and(3) also the webcam.

I've already downloaded the latest driver from nvidia and the drivers/BIOS from dell. Does anybody know how to get any of them working?
