) and I was going to reinstall as Dell usually include a lot of bloatware and I want this to be running at max. I want to avoid it as it will take precious playing time but don't want to get everything set up only to have to reimage in a week or two.
Thoughts? -
2.53 ghz
9400 gpu
4gig ram
WLED
320 HD 7200 rpm
1510 wireless
bluetooth module
1 yr. complete care/lowjack
Vista 64 home
...2058 CAD
And today? $2238! (with tax and $0 shipping)
NOT a deal, compared to every other Dell site I've looked at. -

However, if you experience some random problems, then I think I'd wipe it clean and start over with the install disks. (Dell also has a recovery partition that I imaging puts the machine back into the same state it was delivered in).
Also, When I did Windows Update for the first time, it only needed to get 8 or 10 things, not the 80 with 10 reboots that will be required if you do a fresh install.
One nice thing is that Dell includes 1) An Operating system install disk and 2) a driver disk, so reinstalling should be easy. When I got my Lenovo T400, the only thing they included was a system restore disk with their image, which turned out to be corrupted and caused weeks of frustration.
I don't think it's worth it on this machine for a fresh install. -
-
I will grab and link! I think it's always a good idea to do a fresh install..get's rid of any creepy's that Dell decided to give you, as a new owner gift!
Here:
Dell Vista Laptop Reformat and Bloatware Removal Guide
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=157838
You can also run Ccleaner, RevoUninstaller and SAS.. nice fixers!
Also, doing fresh installs depends on each individual, some do..some don't.

BTW, your signature: there's no Intel Centrino 2 processor, it is called Intel Core 2 Duo. -
I got the 128GB SSD - I've heard its the samsung RBX MLC Drive - Sadly, its not a SLC (single layer chip), but I've heard this drive still has good performance and energy requirements at its price point...
I'll confirm this tomorrow, as my 1340 is supposed to be delivered then.
I'm really hoping I like it, else, I'll be sending it back and getting the sony Z instead... -
With a Geforce 9400m will I have the option to upgrade to a blu-ray player on the 1340 in th future? As of now a Blu Ray player isn't an option but I read that the 9400m can handle HD movies. Was wondering if a Blu-ray could be installed down the road.

Yes, when those drives are available, you will be able to purchase and install (it's basically a removable optical drive, user replaceable). -
My lappy is coming tmr!!!

Has anyone received there BB XPS 13 or 16? Can anyone confirm that the Keyboard is still backlit and that it is not suckish?
-
i got my studio xps 13 this morning, found a problem rite away
can you guys turn on ur backlit keyboard? i did turn everthing on from the quickset and no luck to light my keyboards is there any driver missing? or its sth wrong with the keyboard itself -
-
The standard option to get the back-lit keybaord is by pressing the Fn key (located between the alt and Windows key on the left) along with right arrow key. You should see an icon on your screen that says 1, 2, and a tiny keyboard. The numbers signify the brightness level you want. The icon without the numbers indicate a keyboard without the light emitting.
Hope this helps
If this doesnt work, it's probably some other issue. -

Hey guys Ive received my SXPS1340 and have run some tests
Im in Sydney
Ordered: 30/01/2009
Received: 10/02/2009
Specs:
P9500, 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HDD, 9500M GPU, WLED screen, Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Temps (Using HWMonitor with SLI on)
CPU(Both cores around the same temp): Idle - ~60C (140F)
Load - 76C (169F)
GPU(9400): Idle - ~69C (156F)
Load - 87C (188F)
GPU(9200): Idle - ~59C (138F)
Load - 84C (183F)
(Load reading is achieved through playing some COD4)
Tests:
I have run the following tests in regard to certain problems faced by people on this forum. The software run is out of box with only NVIDIA Video Drivers updated.
Sleep Mode - Able to wake from sleep mode both immediately and after around 30 minutes in sleep
eSATA - Causes vista to freeze and also causes the BIOS to lock up on boot if it is plugged in
Thoughts
Keyboard - Feels solid and nice, but the flat keys will take some getting used to, but I guess it wont be much of a problem after I get used to them. The backlit keys are also a nice touch.
Other things
DPC Latency - Im not quite sure how Im meant to check this so if someone could point me in the right direction Id be glad to test
Windows 7 BETA - Will install this as soon as I get a copy and see how it performs.
Temps - Can anybody give me feedback on my temps please? -
-
It's 2009. The vast majority of the drivers you'd need after doing a clean install will automatically get installed via Windows Update, and any OEM-specific drivers are almost always available on their support sites. -
Your temperatures seem to be normal.
DPClat.exe and RATTV3.exe are used for DPC latency monitoring. Anything above 2-3 thousand microseconds is bad.
Yes, install Windows 7 beta. -
You're the first person apart from me who's actually been able to test it. This basically confirms that's it's a problem on all of them and not just my one.
-
Hmm, im a bit confused now.
Schenker got my laptop (sweden) but my paid money are reinbursed to my account. Is this a normal procedur or what happened? -
-
It might be so that i have to pay to get my package from the postoffice, but we will see. Schenker got ETA on the delivery the 12th, and it might even arrive earlier. -
1340 is here and I love it!
Just reinstalling Vista now...so have to use clunky desktop while I wait :-(
(btw, thanks for the advice on that guys)
Initial thoughts:
Pros:
Looks great, love the touch buttons, backlit keyboard, screen resolution is perfect.
Haven't noticed fingerprint overload yet (but we shall see)
Power adapter is smaller than I expected (90W)
Cons:
Touchpad a little small to what I am used to.
Slightly noisy with the discrete graphics enabled but compared to my previous lappies it's just fine.
I also got the 'designed for studio xps' sleeve and I am really happy. It looks a lot better than the link that was posted on the Whirlpool forums ( http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j220/kktoh/image002.gif) (I think the image quality let it down).
It is matt black on the outside with strong zips and black quilting on the inside (and 2 strange lines on each side which I think are supposed to help you grip better). Feels quite protective and fits the laptop perfectly. It is slightly thicker than a wetsuit-type sleeve but not too bulky. It also has a flap to hook around the closing so the laptop does not jolt open in the bag. No designs on the outside except a small grey swirl.
I can put up photos of the sleeve if anyone is interested.
Any questions, just ask. -
Was using my computer at school tonight and I noticed that it sometimes loses its balance when I'm typing. It seems like it isn't very stable and that at times it rocks. Hm...
Oh yeah, it also seemed to hang a bit when I was multitasking on the computer (i.e. installing a program and typing, or gchat and surfing). I haven't reinstalled windows yet so I won't blame Dell or the SSD yet but it might be.
Also, the computer started to make some quiet "whirring" noises with SLI off. I'm not sure where those sounds came from considering SSD has no movable parts and the fan shouldn't be making such high-pitched noises. -
-
theguac, I get weird noises when in power saver made and the fan's off as well (SSD, SLI off). It comes from somewhere in the fan area. I agree it's kind of weird but I wouldn't worrry about it too much. I haven't got any of your other problems though.
KatB, that's a really nice sleeve! I see that's available here now but it costs a lot extra. -

It also has some circular scrolling, which I didn't like the implementation of.
However, since its a synaptics touch pad, you can use TwoFingerScroll, found at Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/. Be sure to set the speed slow, otherwise you'll be scrolling faster than you can see. Two finger scroll is pretty much the only gesture I loved on the MacBook, and I'm quite happy to have it on my Dell -- I wish the touch pad was bigger, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
There are some other gestures available, too. I'm pretty sure there's a forward/back gesture, but I'm more than happy just to hit my backspace key for back. -
-
But thanks for the enlightment on the subject -
I got a free studio xps 13 from my work
But my esd is March 2nd (ordered January 19th) -
Have any of you guys tried to install Windows XP on your Studio XPS 1340 yet, any of the components required any special third part XP drivers?
Mine is arriving later tonight so will give it a go myself, any feedback or driver links would be very much appreciated.
(Sorry if this question has been asked in this thread allready, the Search function hangs up from my workplace) -
