i like the z, but i configured one with the same specs as the 1340 i'm getting and it was over $700 more
-
-
I was debating between the two too but then I read user reviews on the Z and a lot of people are reporting that their screens are being scratched by the keyboard. Not good for such an expensive laptop!
-
My friend has a Z. I can't say I like the sunken keyboard it offers either. The laptop feels nice, but the screen feels flexible since the top is really thin and seems to lack support.
I'm waiting for the first round of reviews before I pull the trigger on the 1340. Fingers crossed. Maybe my EPP from UT will help
. C'mon Michael Dell, smile upon me!

Some Hybrid SLi benchmarks for those interested:

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,.../9300_und_Hybrid_SLI_versus_Intel_G45/?page=6
Although they aren't perfect matches for this combination (9400+9200) you can see some of the gains achieved. -
you've got the same order date and esd as mine, close to the same specs.
mine just went to boxing over lunch today -
Yeah to me too. The 1640 forum has the dimensions of it. It's something like 5.5 in x 2.5 in x 0.5 in. It might not be too hard to carry around but I will probably still get the 65W one in addition for travel purposes.
-
Mine shipped yesterday, ESD was originally 9th February. I'll make a post for you guys if I get it before anyone has posted pics etc. I'm in New Zealand. It'll probably be another 4 days or so, or maybe after the weekend.
-
Yay! Glad to see the 1340's are starting to ship. I was just in NZ this summer (northern hemisphere summer) =).
-
The nVidia GeForce 9500M (256 MB) option is back on the Canadian web site (it was missing for some time). Other than that, all other options remained the same.
-
I totally did not notice the Hybrid SLI until today, was almost ready to ditch Dell after my M1330 nightmares, but alas looks like the 1340 can't be beaten in terms of features I'd absolutely kill for (HybridSLI, backlit keyboard, DDR3).
Will be ordering one within the next month or so once my replacement 1330 arrives. -
I owned m1330 for 6 months and just loved it, therefore I am just curious what are those "nightmares" that you mentioned above? Thanks!
-
Update: I'm in the testing phase now! It only took them one day to build. Woohoo! I wonder how long it typically takes to go from testing to boxing. We're supposed to get an ice storm tonight and tomorrow with snow tomorrow night into Wednesday...hope people can get to the Nashville facility if it's being built there =(. We're not the best equipped city for lots of wintry precipitation.
-
Nice!
The testing stage can be from one hour! (Yes one hour, to several days)
And then, the boxing shouldn't take that long at all!
I'm sure it will all *flow* well for you!

for those who got their giftcard, how do you do it? I call a lot of time and I couldnt get it done. None of the representatives really do that stuff....please advise
-
Yay!! Well, given that my ESD was 2/16, it might be several days haha. But I hope it takes less time! I feel like with all the complaints coming from the 1640 forum, testing doesn't actually DO much, so why hold up the order?!
What exactly are they saying? Just give them the item number and tell them you heard this can be applied to the order. -
theguac, they said they can't do that. They said they dont have the ability to do that, and they cant give any further discount once the 7% EPP discount is there....am I the only one with the bad luck?
-
They can do that. Don't let them tell you that they can't. rawwrrrr....
Call back have your order ready to go (saved cart), tell the Rep you are willing to place the order with him/her, and that the Dell Home site has the Gift Card promo (you have the item number), and that they should honor it.
If they say no, point out that, per the EPP website they will match or beat the Dell Home's sites deals
See this: (on the right of the screenshot, it also states *2 ways to save: Dell EPP & Dell Home Promotions~

Cin', thanks for the tips. still, they said they cant do it....they also said that the giftcard offer has been taken out....any other tips? please please please....

2 GPU failures in a year, serious build quality issues with the original laptop, panels/keyboard not lining up and were downright warped, hard drive and dvd burner both failed, and the dell technician caused some other issues (light started shining though the mic port, and he jammed up the little dust shield on the dvd drive so it was over the usb slot making it useless)
Perhaps if it had built on a better day and I'd stuck with the GMA X3100 things would be different. -
I'd do what Cin is saying and just keep calling until you find someone willing to do it. That's ridiculous...the person I talked to would do anything to get me to buy the computer. I can give you his ext if you want.
-
I think the key is ~ is finding the right Rep that will work for you at EPP. They make money off of each sale. But they also have certain amount of *loss* they can take on the sale, until they have to say no.
Even if they can't give you the $200 GC promo, they should be willing to get you something else..it would seem.
You can always say, *well if you are not willing to honor/do the $200 GC, what are you willing to do for me to secure the sale, right now*!
I would hope that if you tried a few more times, you might find a Rep willing to work with you.

yes please, I was about to ask for his extension, PM me his extension. Thanks

When did you order?
-
Whoever gets 1340 first make sure you 3Dmark06 first thing and post results
-
can anybody tell me if the studio xps 13 has a keyboard with light?
perfect would be, if someone answer who OWNS a studio xps and could post a picture
would be very kind, because all the german dell people cant answer it..

at this point, no normal consumer has one yet that i know of
but yes it has an illuminated keyboard -
Still no reviews on the 1340? Please post the link asap if you found any (except the Chinese one, which i've already seen) =)
//R -
...Also: Speeking of the chinese review which says that the battery preformance of the xps 1340 only is 2h27min. Sounds strange when the xps 1640 delivers 2h25min according to laptopmag.com review. Both with 6-cell battery. The xps 1640 does't even have hybrid graphics which definitely should make the battery run time shorter. I wonder if the battery test med on the xps 1340 is under full load.
Just some thoughts
//R -
Wait, what? Spare me the review searching, but what are they doing to these notebooks under testing that gets them around 2.5 hours of battery life?
-
First 3DMark06 results posted on a french forum, by someone who got its 1340 delivered today :
* 9400 alone : 2112 points (which is consistent with aluminium macbook scores)
* 9400 + 9200GS : 3288 points. Not that bad.
Source : http://www.lesdelliens.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13477&st=20, post #36.
Ps : Ugh, 2 minutes faster than you pipo
-
Well, it seems I'm the first one to have it (delivered in France this morning, from the Polish factory).
In 3DMark06, I get 2112 points with SLI disabled (so, 9400m only), and 3288 points with SLI enabled (9400m + 9200m GS), which, to my knowledge, is the best that exists among 13 inches laptops today.
The things I don't like are :
* the glossy plastic cover really catches every fingerprint, so after 30 minutes, it's more greasy than shiny.
* the keyboard quality is really poor, the keys react differently depending on where on the key you push ... I don't know how it's built, how fragile it is or how easy to fix it is, but it seems like it's nothing like the Thinkpad quality ...
* the air vent is on the back of the laptop, which sounds great, except that when you open the lid, it COVERS the vent, so the cpu and the gps end up heating the screen ! This really looks like a big conception issue.
Except for these, the machine is really good looking, and packed with the latest available technology...
So now, I have to decide if I want to keep it (because it's a really nice and powerful machine), or if I want to return it (because first, I want to program on it, and I'm afraid that the keyboard will drive me crazy, and second I'm really scared that the vent issue will make some hardware overheat and fail soon) ... But once again, if I return it, is there another 13'' laptop with an (at least) equivalent GPU power out there ? -
did you order backlight keyboard??
is it build in? -
. I thought that when the SLI is disabled it would use the 9200m GPU, to save even more power. Oh well.
Also a side-note about powerful 13" laptops - check out LG's P310 with 9600GT GPU.
Don't know about the quality very much, but it's labeled business grade and from a few reviews it's quite a nice laptop. (Although with a shiny lid
)
-
Would you mind posting the SM 2.0 and SM 3.0 scores from 3dmark please?
Thank you
-
I think it is, I don't think it was a build option
well, the 9400 is integrated to the chipset, the 9200 is a dedicated chip.
I only have the freeware version, I don't think that these are available. -
And what about battery life without sli ?
Which screen did you get ? CCFL or WLED (WLED is said to be less power hungry) ? What about display quality ?
And what about heat ? -
You are probably right.
Please do upload pictures or a video if/when you get the chance.
Thanks again
-
With those 3dmark results, they seem to be on bar with notebookcheck's test on the real 9500, not the "nividia addition" version.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9500M-GS.8167.0.html -
Quite far off actually.. at ~3200@1024x768
The benches on notebookcheck are at 1280x1024, with 1 at 1280x800. -
just got an email saying mine's been delayed and the ESD has been revised from today until next tuesday.
-
I, too, just got an email saying mine has been deleayed until 02/03/2009. I ordered mine originally on 1/8/2009.
-
Hi Guys,
I have ordered 2 of these for my work, currently I have the m1330 so I will find it very interesting if they have successfully improved both the design, flaws and performance.
I would find it very strange that Dell would mess up the design of the venting by blocking the vents with the lid. I will comment on this tomorrow when I receive them, likewise I hope the keyboard issue is just a one off
I ordered the LED screen, wouldn't touch a CCFL. I also currently have my hands on the Zseries Sony so will be interesting to do a side by side comparison.
How do you find out where the machine was built? Does it state it in the packing slip or somewhere? Anyway I will post my initial thoughts tomorrow. -
Hm, the keyboard issue is scaring me. Why would they make typing on it so terrible? The vent issue is also kind of annoying. Is the 90W power adapter pretty mobile do you find? Thanks!
-
Seeing as though this is a new GPU setup, as the drivers mature (and with a clean install of Vista), I imagine in the next few months we will be able to eek a few hundred more points out of it.
-
Any word on the temperatures both external and internal? Does the palm rest get real warm while gaming? While just web-surfing?
-
Well, the CPU and GPUs are located above the keyboard, and really close to the vent, so heat dissipation isn't really a problem, except for the fact that the screen deflects part of the hor air stream.
And after a few minutes of intense hard disk activity, the palm rests were still quite OK.
I'll post a link to pictures as soon as they have finished uploading. -
ha, yeah i ordered on the 8th too!
@#$%!
oh well
