Also, I currently only have 3GB of RAM, and dual-channel is thus disabled, so you could get a few more points by having matching RAM sticks (4GB).

Finally, I only have the P8400 CPU, which explains also why evaryone else will probably get a better score than me ;)

So it does seem NVIDIA isn't really cheating us by calling this a 9500M.

    That review: 1024x768 - 3872
Notebookcheck, for the real 9500M: 3694

With the score above of 3288, it seems like it might average out around the same as the 'real' one.

Really? The linked page doesn't say what resolution the 3Dmark '06 test is for some reason, but all the ones around it are stated at 1024x768. I was assuming it's the same, in which case the scores correspond.

    Pipolo congratulations ^_^
I expect mine for thursday in spain ^_^
I have the same configuration as you.
Is it true that if you have diferent memory's size the dual-channel is disabled?
    Thanks

The LGs aren't available in the U.S. Otherewise, last year, I was interested in the P300.

And although they are available in most of Europe, they are not in France, which would mean I would have to mentally switch the keymap each time I switch to it.

So, I took a few pictures and put them here: http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/

There's a video showing the issue I have with the keyboard here : http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000129.MOV

and you can see how the lid covers the air vent in those two :
    http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000125.JPG
    http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000126.JPG

I just edited a few pictures on which my personal address was appearing. Flash was not used on most pictures, except the last few ones.

The blue ring visible on the power cord in the last picture is actually translucent and LED lit, though it appears plain in the picture.

On the side shots where we can see the screen, is that how far back it is when it blocks the vents? Particularly the shot below. It seems to be leaning a bit back.

    http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000124.JPG

If not, can you show us a side shot of the laptop when you say the screen is blocking the vents? I am interested to see how far you have it back.

    Here you go :

http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000133.JPG : Closed position, you can see the vent
http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000134.JPG : Open position, the vent is covered by the screen
http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000135.JPG : Same open position, different angle, so you can see it's a normal usage position, and it's not completely leaning back

i think that vent might be like that by design, so it goes up through the crack between the screen and into the air rather than down onto your legs/desk

If this is so, it is a good idea - Though, I am still concerned that the hot air might do damage to the screen over a longer period of time - perhaps reflected in some sort of color change of the material.

That's my concern too. And the part of the screen right above the vent really seems to be the hottest spot of the laptop.

yeah you'd think they did some amount of testing with this design before they decided on it. if not, the worst that will happen is it will melt your screen and they'll have to replace it with whatever they come up with to fix it.

It looks like they try to split the airflow to infront of the screen and behind it (up and down). I think it'll work out just fine, especially if the front screen is glass, which shouldn't warp against that amount of heat.
Does anyone know if I can use the VGA out with the HDMI out to have 3 monitors? =)
I'm glad on the improved 3DMark score, especially since I'm getting the P9500.

Yeah, if its a design option to help dissipate the heat, ok thats fine. Just like you, I am worried about that constant stream of heat on the screen.

    Hi

Please tell me that is a native ubuntu install.

Are Dell offering this line with ubuntu or have you done this install yourself?

I am running the 'old' xps M1330 with Opensuse 11.1 (Dell offered this laptop with ubuntu option in the US I Believe).

If it is a native install please let me know how its all working for you in terms of hardware compatibility. I am interested in how the hybrid SLI is handled in Linux.

Sorry if I am blind or its a VM.

    Thanks.

I don't think the front of the lid is glass (although I think I read the same, but I can't tell where), it actually feels like plastic, and I'm quite sure it is.

You may want to check and see if there is a plastic cover on the lid, and the screen & even parts of the keyboard! Most of the 1530's were shipped with clear plastic covering parts of it, to protect whilst being shiped. ;)

Negative, there is no protective transparent plastic sheet on the lid, I really mean that the front of the lid is made of plastic, and not glass, by the sound it makes when I tap on it with my nails.

It's my own "initiative" ;), Afaik, Dell does not provide Ubuntu support for this model. And using powertop, I can only get 2.5 hours, with the screen dimmed to the max (but for instance the webcam and bluetooth module are connected and drawing power even if not used, I'll have to dig in here to get how to disable them).

Thanks for the pics. I'm really not digging all the fingerprints and the keyboard. The keyboard looks cheap and the fingerprints make the computer look old and unprofessional. I can live with the fingerprints but I can't with the keyboard. If it is not an isolated incident, I might need to cancel or return.

    Erm, I wasn't really clear ...

The outside of the lid is black glossy plastic on the top two thirds and metal (aluminium?) and leather on the bottom third.

The inside of the lid is made of transparent plastic, through which the screen can be seen, and is painted black on the edges.

The screen itself id behind that transparent plastic cover, and I don't know what it is made of (glass maybe?).

Anything else to say about Ubuntu?

Anything you have not got working yet?

How about the compiz desktop effects and what does it report your video card as?

Sorry for all the questions, Im just surprised its even working with the 'SLI' setup.

The vents are placed in a similar location on the studio 15/17 and the xps 1330/1530. But the lid is designed differently and so when open, the vents open below the screen and aren't covered at all.

The screen has to be blocking some of the airflow; there is no way a large enough volume of air is coming through that screen. That might be partially why we are getting such high temperatures in the Studio XPS 1640s. And it doesn't help that the CPU and GPU are located up there as well.

Something tells me that leather isn't going to look too good several months down the road...I hope they used more than glue to attach it.

Got an email today that my estimated shipping date was pushed back to February 2nd, even though they tell me Im in the boxing stage. Sounds very strange...Maybe they went back to the drawing board after they saw pipo's review...

I also called to request an upgrade to overnight shipping but I was denied because it is already in boxing and they can not change it at this point. That was not worth 10 minutes of holding!

In my opinion, and as said to me by others on this forum, the two machines are hardly comparable. I'm not trying to knock the 1340, but I would think that the two notebooks appeal to two slightly different groups.

The z690 will no doubt command a several hundred dollar premium over the 1340, but then again, it's almost certainly going to be a snazzy machine. If that thing offers Vista x64, a backlit keyboard, and edge-to-edge glass on the monitor, and considering that its predecessor - the z590 - shaves more than a pound off of the 1340, AND if it comes with that roomy 1600x900 resolution, it's not even a contest for me.

But that's just my $.02. Your mileage may vary. I'm still quite interested to see how people like their 1340s once those start arriving.

I KNOW!!! It really got me looking at the Sony Z series again. At least from the pictures, the laptop doesn't look worth $1600. Especially since I'll be using the computer in professional settings, I don't want it to look "worn". I'm very eager to hear about others' experiences when they get their comps =).
