I see. Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the Inspiron's get anything new.

There is a slight difference in the "new XPS". XPS is still a premium brand, but it is now an adjective. There could be a Adamo XPS or an Inspiron XPS (I would love to see an Inspiron Mini XPS. Ion platform anyone?). XPS used to include gaming models, but now Dell has regulated most of that to Alienware, so don't expect to see high-end graphics cards, but do expect great styling and high overall performance for reasonable cost.

Mine have had problems as well. I searched and the first solution worked for me both times my media buttons stopped working. Shut down the computer and wipe of the media buttons with a soft cloth to remove any fingerprints. After I did that and turned the computer on again they worked fine. Also, the second time it happened I tried just restarting the computer but that did not work. In my situation I believe it is just oil built up on the buttons.

Also, there is another method that was said. Shut the computer down and the remove the battery. After, hold down the power button to drain any power left. Replace battery and restart, though I have not needed to try this.

    Good luck

I have tried the second method of removing the battery, and it always works. I just wish there was something I could do to get my computer to function the way it should that doesn't require stopping what I'm doing, shutting it down, removing the battery, and rebooting. No computer should have this problem. I wish I had some idea of what was causing it.

I don't see why not. Just make sure it's 54mm and not 34 mm and you will be fine.

54 mm port supports both 54 mm and 34 mm cards, so that shouldn't be a problem -- he can get either of those.

Try Norton Internet Security 2009. You get a 15 day trial when you first install it.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2330018,00.asp

I have tried it and it really is fast and easy on the system.

you will NEED to format.. put the cd in, reboot the computer, boot onto the cd, delete all partitions and then just click install, you will have 297GB of usable space after you do that.

Oh I just saw this post and wondered why you would suggest a clean install to fix that.

I read the other posts. Clean install would probably be the best option.

clean install usually fixes 80% of issues but sometimes theres that 20% hardware fault

dont mind the numbers just an example? :L

btw for the dell xps studio 13/16 owners you should remove your badges.. laptop looks amazing without them :) ill edit with pictures in a bit.

for those that plan on doing this make sure you get some goe goe gone.. ALSO when you do the badges on the right side make sure you prop something under the laptop so that the liquid doesnt run into the frame this almost happen to me!

call dell back and try to get them to move on the price.. thats wayyyy too much considering your going to have problems when you get it.. imo you should have opt'd for the 9cell battery as well since your doing the bigger gfx card.

it does..however if you decide once u get it the battery sucks.. ull have to pay 200$ for a 9cell but if u do it when you puchase a laptop its like 40$ upgrade it doesnt stick out too bad, it pretty much goes across back bottom of laptop just imagen your battery a little thicker and covers the entire bottom across

If this is what you want for your lappy, then it's good! :D

When you receive, you may want to do a reformat & perform some Vista tweaking, etc.

If you were to do any changes to your order at this point.. even negotiating on a lower price ~ Your order will be cancelled and you will have to start with a fresh new order/order number. ;)

And, on the 9 cell....you usually can get the best deals when you order them in cofiguration..Ordering separate from your order, will cost $$$. I ordered both the 6 cell and 9 cell with my 1530..and it was a good deal to do it together! ;)

The only way that will happen is if he starts over, with a fresh new order... :(

    Cin ;) :)

now obv that is a 16inch model of the xps but battery is same

now on the 13inch the battery will run from side to side obviously

im highly considering on ordering the 9-cell for about $165.00.. but i recently tried to get in on a 32" lcd tv for $99 from dell and they are going to end up canceling the order for any of you SD'ers out there ..yall know what im talking about..so normally dell offers concession coupons for people who ordered stuff and they cancel it.. so maybe i can get the battery down to $110-$115 then ill jump on it.

I currently have the m1330 and my specs are in my sig and will be handing this 1 down to my sister do you think this system is a upgrade worth it. or I was just going to get my sister a inspiron 13 and keep what i have. Money aint a big issue plan on spending around $1500 i just dont wanna feel like spend tons of money on the latest greatest and did not really get a big upgrade because ive been looking at the inspiron 13 and they now have the nvidia 8600gs and seen them in the dell outlet for around $650-$850 what do you guys think how many have done the upgrade already.

Because I was thinking of just seeing my m1330 because it still has a warrenty till 09/2010. But my sister 17 and she has my old Inspiron 9400 and she needs something to carry around but she kind of rough on comps. Because she done peels all the white trim off the inspiron & it has alot of scratchs and I know the m1330 aint that tough. Thats why i was thinking the inspiron 13 was better for her. But I am going to have to sell her 9400 then. Also sell me m1330 if i want to get to laptops. But has anyone confermed that the remote from the m1330 works on the 1340. But thanks for the quick replies.

mooseymoose, what's in your esata/usb port?

removing stickers is nice, but it just leaves that much more room fro greasy fingerprints. :(

also, yes, format and install from scratch. why? because it works!

mine has started to heat slightly. and it think that might match up with the now slight wobble of the entire laptop. (you guys were right.) although, sometimes it doesn't wobble at all! (maybe when it's cooler?) that's just crazy.

oh, and i did get $100 back from best buy after they "price matched" themselves. :)

Well, I got my replacement today, this one doesn't wobble, but the playback of DVD or any movie files is still quite poor. For anyone interested, the monitor ID is LGD0145, the same as my first one. Since my 21 days is about up, I'll be getting a refund. I may wait a month or two and re-order or go and get a Lenovo U330, though spec'd worse.

Does anyone have the part number for the Nvidia 9200 GS add in card. I already ordered a 1340 (it's in boxing) and am starting to think that I want SLI. I called my rep, but he couldn't find the part in their system.

    Thanks,

    Hi All,

As you can see I'm newly registered to the forum but I've browsed it a fair bit. I have had the Studio XPS 13 for nearly a month now, UK so it was fairly expensive!

For info, Specs: 2.4 CPU, Hybrid SLI GPU, LED screen, 4GB RAM, 320GB drive.

Having gone through much of this thread and the 'horror' thread :( I've had moments where I've been really scared this is a lemon but for the most part it hasn't hindered my work (this is a work laptop). I don't have a wobbly one, I don't suffer from BSOD's, sleep mode seems to work, and many other problems reported I don't have. However, I did get freezes on startup, every startup, after severall days. It was seemingly caused by the dell dock software which I had to reinstall in safe mode before I could uninstall. It has remained uninstalled and I have had a stable system since.

That said I still have a couple of (major?) issues I'm really hoping you guys can help me with.

    1. Flickery external monitor through VGA. Kind of a rippling effect. I have tried multiple monitors and multiple vga cables, still ripples. On battery power there is no ripple, powered with the supplied AC adapter there is ripple. To the point it stops the INSTANT the cable is unplugged. I have tried it with other power supplies and the ripple doesn't seem to show up or at least not as much. I have contacted Dell support and after being transferred 4 times eventually got the answe that this is an ongoing issue they're looking into. They'll get back to me. I didn't get a reference number *facepalm*

    2. Graphics Mode/Hybrid SLI. Whilst I had no trouble to begin with, I now can't change the mode. Well that isn't exaclt true, I can change the mode but it doesn't actually change the active state i.e. When plugged in I am stuck on 'Save Power' even though I'm on 'Balance' and therefore I have the '!' symbol on the system tray icon. When I click to 'Boost performance now' I am told to 'Close these applications to boost performance.' Here's the real kicker. The 'application' listed is:

    [System Process]
    Nvidia Hybrid SLI Graphics (rundll32.exe)

When I end this process (there are actually 3x rundll.exe processes but only one run by username SYSTEM) inevitably the Graphics Mode system tray icon disappears. Can I get a big fat W.T.F? (F = frick, of course) I've disabled any other possibly conflict I can think of to no avail. Restart after restart with changed options makes no difference.

    3. Screen edge and cover. The top of the screen edge (the bit you grab with your fingers to open the laptop) is sharp and rough to the touch. Also despite only ever touching it to open the laptop twice a day and keeping it between times in the felt case it came with (sad I know lol) it is getting worse/frayed. There is actually some plastic kind of peeling off. Is this normal? I wondered if maybe the lid is set slightly too high up (maybe just 0.2-0.6mm) as there is a gap between the aluminium and plastic on the lid I can fit my nail in. Also, at first I thought I had dead pixels but on closer inspection it appears I have 2 (1 barely noticeable) specks of dirt between the actual panel and the screen cover. Anyone else notice this? Anything I should do about it?

PLEASE, can anyone help? Point 1 is meh... it only affects me in the office as at home I bought a HDMI-DVI cable to use. Not an analogue signal so not afffected by the interference from the AC Adapter. Point 2 is driving me absolutely wild. Point 3 is maybe just me being petty but for this much money (£1268 = $1795) it's making me sad :(

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to offer advice.

What are you talking about? Replacing the CPU and GPU? You must be kidding.

 Come on! Replacing a P-series (25W) with a Q-series (45W)??? Dell doesn't even support the T-series (35W) CPUs on that board. No way.

I'd say: GPU -- possibly, CPU -- no.

I had meant you can replace the CPU in general, but not the GPU.

Well, in general you can replace both CPU and GPU, with compatible models. :)
