In general you can replace the CPU but the trend for replacing GPUs has been going away.

Have you noticed that you've gone from talking about specific models (Q9000 and 9600M) to talking about whether it's possible to replace the components in general and then to talking about the trends? :) The guy asked a very specific question, IMHO.

None of my replies were specific. I have stated from the beginning a CPU replacement is possible, but a GPU replacement is not. They used to be more replaceable but not so much anymore. Thanks for the heads up though, I will be sure to PM you my posts for your approval next time!

Both CPU and GPU can be replaced on 1340 in general. However, with the models that he mentioned, GPU can be replaced (most likely, since I'm not sure if 9600M is the same form factor as 9200M, I know that 9300M is the same) and CPU can not be replaced (only P-series, like P9600 can be put there).
Next time somebody asks if he can replace a wheel on his car with a wheel from his bicycle, would you reply that wheels are replaceable, in general?

I have the 9-cell battery with the Intel P8600 and nVidia 9400M. Right now it's getting me 4-5 hours in Linux Mint 6. So I'm guessing it would be somewhere between 5-6 in Windows.

So, how would you replace the GPU?
    http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xps1340gpus.jpg (chip to the right)

I would say that the GPU can't be replaced.

GPU won't be replacable, by the looks of it both are soldered in.

CPU would be replacable but with a quad core? No chance.

As stated, different power envelopes makes it impossible. The only viable CPU upgrades I can see is moving up from your P8400/P8600 to a P8600/P9500 etc.

The GPU on the 1340 looks to be on the system board so I would say ATB was pretty much correct, The GPU can not be replaced and the CPU can be replaced. Wether or not the Q9000 will work is the only thing we don't know for sure. It might be worth a shot, however if the BIOS did recognize the CPU properly it may produce too much heat and cause issues. I was told the X9100 would not work in my E6400 however it has been working just fine with no heat issues for at least 45 days. If I had a Q9000 I would give it a shot.

The GPU is replaceable, just not for the faint of heart. Sodder is just an electrician's screw. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very experienced with assembling computers. The best upgrade possible that I could find is a 9500M GS if you want GeForce Boost and a 9600M GT if you want Hybrid Power. The hardest part would be trying to find OEM version of these graphics cards.

    Hey -

My SXPS 13 is supposed to arrive this week (4 days ahead of schedule, that sure caught me by surprise), but just now I'm starting to hear about the worst of the problems. The one in specific that worries me is this thing about a stacsv.exe (excuse my lack of understanding of what this is) that uses up about 50% of the computer, which obviously does not sound very convenient. I was wondering, is there any easy way of disabling this? How is it going to effect my computer if I do disable it? Is there any way to fix it?

I'm sorry to post it here - I didn't want to make an entire thread because I figured someone might get angry if there already is a thread on it. I did search and found one thread, but they ended out talking about using the notebook for recording so I figured that it didn't quite apply to me.

    Thanks a bunch!

Apparently you can just reinstall the audio driver and that should fix it. I guess it does since I formatted and reinstalled windows and I have no idle CPU usage.

Thanks a ton! And, if you don't mind me asking (and this will sound pretty stupid), how do you reinstall a sound driver? Like, I understand how to uninstall and install something again, but does the notebook come with a disk with the driver on it or something?

Again, thanks. Sorry if the above question sounds totally incompetent.

sigh .. the epp department is closed!

grr they are telling me i have to pick either the epp 7% or the 25% discount but im clearly reading over the terms of the epp..

"Open and Print out the latest coupon codes from the Dell circular. These coupons are discounts in ADDITION to your Employee Purchase Plan Discount (make sure you check the expiration date). After printing out any coupons that may be available, visit www.dell.com/edu/promoflyer to enter the purchasing site. Bookmark the site." the rep isnt comprehending ADDITION..

Hey everyone, so I did a clean install of Vista on my 1340, at first I couldnt turn wifi on and off from the multimedia buttons, so I installed a driver from the disk and I could, but now when I want to connect to a network it says "Can't find networking hardware" any ideas?

After downloading the Dell Wireless 1515 Driver Installer off the CD, during installation it says Dell Wireless 1515 Adapter Device Not Found. Does anyone know how I can fix this?? Clearly this is why I cannot connect to the internet.

WHOA thats a crazy mouse cin, i dont like that MS mouse its too big for me. im trying to find the perfect case for my laptop as i will be traveling to atlanta @ the end of march and i will be going thru airport security. this will be the first time flying with a laptop, i usually drive everywhere.. just a tiny bit worried about it being damaged, guess ill have to see how big the 9-cell battery is before i purchase a case.

cin; also, my circut city is still open until march 8th.. maybe yours is too? they have the logitech nano for $26.00 after the savings discounts.. i was thinking of picking up a new one because mine is a year old and the feet are starting to wear

Those product dimensions are totally wrong. I mean apart from the huge size, weight = 3 pounds!? I've got a notebook mouse 3000 (just the older/corded version) and it's actually pretty tiny.

They do, it's called the v470 cordless laser mouse. That's what I have. For a cordless mouse bluetooth is the way to go with this laptop since it only has 2 usb ports.

Note that after installing the logitech driver to make the forward&back functions work, the driver does freeze the mouse for a couple seconds at boot time. A little annoying. You can run without the logitech driver if you don't use forward&back however.

Back&forth are when you flick the scroll wheel to the left&right. So the scroll wheel does 4 functions at the same time - middle mouse button click, scroll wheel, and back&forth. The scroll and middle mouse button click work by default with the dell bundled bluetooth driver. The back&forth part require the logitech software (with the freeze lag issue I haven't figured out).

Worth noting it works well with AA NIMH batteries. Haven't had to recharge them yet. I've got some other mice that need recharging in a cradle every couple days...

I experienced the same exact issues initally from the one I bought from Bestbuy. I bought it b/c within a week I took a toshiba 13" U405D-S2902 laptop back to Fry's for bad pixels.

I remember getting the BSOD after updates and became turned off immediately, but then remembered it was using windows vista  . I also had the mute headphone problem, but can't duplicate it as of now. I had a problem with the cute little touch buttons not responding and had to reboot. The only other thing which was disappointing to me was having to turn my graphics down to low for World of Warcraft which is not a graphic intense game. In order to get decent FPS, I turned them down to low.

I did not purchase the best buy warranty because it was a little pricey IMO, but I think I better grab it b4 my 14 days is up. I am anxious to see if anything else goes wrong.

hmm.. very interesting i may have to see if its sold locally.. i hate the logitech software.. i had lag issues with my mx revolution when i had a desktop pc. its so weird i think it just needs to register the mouse within the control panel.. i dont really use both usb ports so maybe ill just stick w/ my nano.. but having 2 free ports would be nice :\ hmm decisions decisions!

get the warranty.. the accidental one.. its $379 for 3yrs.. it is a little pricey BUT.. in 3yrs u will thank yourself.. bc u can damage it by spilling coffee on it and break the plastic screen (this was told to me by an employee) and ull basically be getting a free upgrade minus the cost you spent on the warranty..

Potential good news for those out there with extended ship dates.

I ordered my SXPS 13 on 2/18. with an estimated ship date of 3/13. Yesterday I checked my order status and it returned with a delightful shipped message (3/2) and estimated arrival date of 3/4.

I haven't purchased any accessories aside from the
    Zalman NC1000

I am looking for suggestions on mice and cases. The laptop does have built in bluetooth. As for a case, I am not sure if I will go with a backpack setup or a small case that fits the form of the laptop. Any suggestions?

Additionally, I read on this forum that the Dell 65w travel adapter would work for the 1340 can anyone confirm this?

The 65w adapter will work but you'll probably get the message on bootup that the system won't run at its best and the battery will take longer to charge.

yay, just got my sxps13 today at 12:00 on the dot. I don't seem to be having problems...keyboard feels solid (i like the flat style), DVD quality is great, sound is great, system is very responsive (i'm just now crossing over to Vista and was expecting the worse), both hinge lights function properly, media touch buttons function properly, system correctly reporting 2.66GHz p9600 and 4GB RAM, bluetooth successfully pairing, gigabit nic working great, wireless working great, heat is at a reasonable level. I haven't experienced any BSOD issues or DPC latency issues. Hardware seems to check out OK. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. Haha, the wife wants one now! Thanks to everyone in the forum for pointing out what to look for!

thats awesome, i just ordered one with the same configeration i think (reading your sig) After reading some of the horror stories i was getting a little worried. if you don't mind me asking, how is the screen? how are the viewing angles on battery power? when you say heat is at a reasonable level, is that on a desk or on your lap?

For mice I posted my qualified recommendation practically next to your post, just a few posts back.
I got mine and it works with the 9400m configured 1340. I'm 95% sure that your battery wouldn't charge at all if you try to use this with a 9500m model. Even with the 9400m the battery charges pretty slowly (but it's the same slow that you get with the stock 65w charger).

I think this charger should be a standard option for the 1340+9400m not an additional accessory.

The only screwy thing about this charger is that there are two separate cables for empower and auto. This adds unnecessary travel weight+bulk (since some planes use empower some use auto). I don't understand why auto isn't just handled as a plug that is put on over the empower connector like every other auto/air power supply seems to do. Anyone know a reason why I shouldn't just use one of my old empower->auto plugs with this and ditch the auto cable? They certainly fit.
