I have screen flickers with 179.48... don't want to roll back because I am seeing much better performance.

Also, I swapped out the original DVD drive for the new one Dell sent this weekend. Same model, same build date, but now MUCH less noise and vibration.

    Hello everyone,

Iam a new member of this big family, starting to enjoy my new XPS 1340.

I want to make a clean vista install, following Less indications from here
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=157838
but I think I need your help.
When I get to the point of finding the AHCI controler, I insert my drivers disk, but I found none file usefull...
Do I need to extract something, or it should be just there, inserting the disk?

I tried to download the hard drive controller from dells web site, but there is no controller for the hard drive to be downloaded for the 1340

can anyone please tell me something about??

    thanks

    regards,

    dimas

Congrats Dimas! I'm not sure about the drivers as I havent gotten my laptop yet. Could you maybe find it on the hard drive manufactures website? I've never had to install a hard drive driver before.

Hows the heat on everyones laptops when running intensive stuff?

Do you mean enabling/disabling AHCI in BIOS? That's done in BIOS.

Really struggling with my 1340 that i got today. i love the way it looks! but i am getting the BSOD all day long!.. i got it one time, and then immediatly did a clean install of vista (i think i did it right). Now i can get the computer to stay on untill i try and download the windows updates and then it crashes. is there anyway to find out why it keeps crashing?

Yeah, i already tried that, and it didn't work for me. Maybe i did it wrong or my base plate is faulty. Hower if Dell replace it and it still wobble i'll guess i have to try to adjust the screws again.

its all about the screws (I thought i was the baseplate too at first) but .. after de-assembly/re-assembly my sxps13's I have induced wobble one that previous didn't.. and corrected the wobble in on that shipped with it.

eventually i got them both perfect.

its all about even-ness when tightening. start at the front right, work around clockwise, about half-tighten each screw.. then keep going around and finish them, remember to not over tighten. practice makes perfect

Is probably just a model without "wobble upgrade" option... :) Or perhaps with BluRay option added back to the line-up. Or one with Media Direct (why didn't we get this??? Would be handy...Can we add it? My Dad's Studio 1735 has it, and he has the disk. Is it worth it?)

    Probably not worth waiting for...IMHO...

Dell doesn't give new numbers if it's only about adding some options, like Blu-ray, etc. So no, this is going to have a different architecture, for example, a different graphics card. My prediction is that this is going to be named something like Studio XPS 1345 and will have the latest gen nVidia cards, like let's say nVidia 160M video card.

@jmoose:Wasn't meaning you to take it that way, necessarily... :(

    not@jmoose:

I also noticed an "unknown" in that list...maybe they'll come out with a Studio XPS Commodore 64!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!1!1!!!!1!11!!!!!!!111!

What does the speculation do at the end of the day? Does it make our computers run any better? Does it help new owners by not muddying up this thread any further than it already has been?

Nope. I think this topic should be moved to a new thread, and should never have been put in this one to begin with. Has no bearing on owning a 1340...imo...especially since this is the "official" thread, I think we should keep "unofficial" speculations out of the mix...again, imo... :)

Oh, and when im installing vista, im using the dell cd that came with the computer, and i am not being given the option to bypass the license agreement or any of that stuff.

I also did not download the important installation updates for windows before i installed it.. would that make a difference?

Just got off the phone with Dell. Placed an order for the 1340.
Is a replacement for my current 1330.
    Current M1330 specs in sig
    New 1340 with 4 gigs-P9600-the 9500? 256Mb

Worth it or keep the M1330?

I am biased, but I say keep that order. The 1340 is a great machine. Has done everything I have thrown at it, and I haven't even finished tweaking it yet.

Update on my temps(no pic yet): Running 179.48 drivers, and undervolted to .9875, my max temps in COD4 are now 66C(cpu) and 78C(GPU). That's a decrease of 11C for the CPU, and 8-9 for the GPU. And that was in a room that was 10F hotter than before.

CPU's idling in the mid-upper 40's, and the GPU runs upper 40s to low 50s at idle.

All I have done is undervolt and change drivers. Still get an occasional flicker, but temps are down and in-game performance is better, so I think I will deal for now. Later...

Edit: A link to my temps previously from COD4 test... http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31866&d=1237170836

Great to see someone has undervolted it with success. I was thinking the same thing myself. It the CPU is undervolted, universal temperatures should go down. Is the top-left corner still very hot?

Ok, so I have tried 5 different builds on of Windows 7 on my machine and there seems to be an inherent bug which I believe is to do with the SLi video card drivers.

The Laptop just freezes, all bios functions such as screen brightness still work but the OS is locked totally. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it happens other than the fans seem to be blowing quite hard.

(I know it is still in beta, I fully expect bugs, I have used all the windows beta software in the past.) This does not seem like a problem with the beta but more a problem with the interaction of certain drivers with the beta. I know that is a little bit chicken and the egg but please stick with me.

It seems MS don’t support SLi in Win7, they have said as much in statements, but I don't know if they mean they will leave it to the manufactures to proved drivers for SLI or if they are saying, don't do it at all as it won’t work.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

    Currently running 7057 32bit.

Using RMClock...noticed the drop in max throttle to 2.4 G, but meh...NBD...still plenty snappy and responsive for me, and I was more worried with getting temps down to where I was comfortable...was actually wondering if this was a half-multiplier processor...

May try CrystalCPUID and see what it can do, but it always BSOD'd the One when I tried it, so I am hesitant...hell, what's a few blue screens???And honestly, even at .9875, I never got the first Blue screen, I just figured it was good enough for now...may try some more tweaking later on...got a paper to write...

Yes, the corner still gets hot, but not as hot...

I also have the back propped up now (faucet washers FTW) but these temps were done before that. Haven't really noticed much temp drop from the prop, but it cools down faster...

A note to those who say "The lid blocks the vents!!!11!!1"...It really doesn't. If you look from a slight underneath vantage point, you can see that the vents are not covered, and that they all angle down in such a way as to blow the exhaust under the screen, not directly onto it...that's what I noticed, anyway...

Shut it down. Remove wireless card from underneath. Start it back up, put it to sleep, and shut the lid and there you go. The wireless is turned off without opening the lid...

Seriously, no, I don't believe so unless you do some customization...where's the struggle with opening the lid anyway??? Lazy people annoy me... :p

I tried build 7000 on my studio xps 13. I could not get the video card to work right. This hybrid SLI thing is so new that I am sure the drivers are just not ready yet. I am sure that by the time Windows 7 is released they will support SLI. Manufactures do not feel pressure to release drivers for an OS that is still in beta. Once win 7 is released they will have a need for them. Also I am sure the studio XPS will ship with win 7 once available. I reinstalled Vista for the time being. I am loving the new laptop. First thing I did was update the bios since I heard if solves the freezing and heat issues. I have not had any freezing or hot temps at all. Actually it runs cooler than any laptop I have ever had.

I did the same (immediate BIOS update) and have had zero issues with freezing/BSODs either...it pays to research a purchase in advance, I swear it does...I read this entire thread before I ordered...at the time, it was 178ish pages... took me a few days...lol...

It also seemed like Dell did my Windows updates, as I have updates that were installed the 3/8 and I got it on the 13th. My first WU was only like 10 updates, counting SP2...no BSOD's, until I tried nTune from nVidia... :(

Have a 7 build 7048 disc waiting for me to get unlazy and do some partitioning...May just sit tight and happy with Vista for a couple weeks, though...probably not...

I have no issue getting SLI to work in 7. Seems pretty easy if you use the drivers from the Dell website. You do need to change the powersettings though so that when it is unplugged it drops to just the onboard chip. Do not install the one MS tries to push on you from Win update as this will disable SLi and just enable the low graphics mode.

    Great answer.

In my business I switch between our high speed wireless for internet use and ethernet cable for secure data on our network. With my old laptop I would flick the wifi switch off and plug in the ethernet cable, then take out the ethernet cable when i'm done and switch the wireless back on. With the 1340 I can't seem to find a better solution. It's not about being lazy and opening the lid, it's about not opening and closing the lid 10 times a day, 3000 times a year and having the hinges wear out on me just because I can't find a better way to turn wireless on and off.

So you use it with an external monitor? Why not just buy a desktop and sync the two, and not have to worry about the laptop's wifi? Or...at a loss...Or just use the LAN exclusively...Or use a USB adapter for the wireless and disable the onboard card? There aren't many options that I can think of for this dilemma...

For future reference, questions without details yield sometimes obnoxious answers from obnoxious people... :)

I'm late to posting on this excellent thread, which I've been following for weeks while I waited for my 1340 to arrive.

Sadly, it's now heading back to Dell. If it helps anyone, here's my week with an XPS 13:

    1. Two hours after delivery, first lock-up. Continues to freeze, usually between 30 secs and five minurtes after login. Try running Windows Update, hoping it will solve the problem - Update freezes. Windows decides that it installed the updates, even though it clearly didn't. Grrrr. Freezes continue, to the point where the laptop is unusable.

    2. Try calling Dell Support, but lose the will to live waiting on the phone. I choose to find my own solution, and go for the clean Vista Premium install option. Seems to go well enough. Download latest versions of drivers from Dell's Support site, but fail to notice the link to the 'install everything in the right order or you're screwed' page. Install the updates in the wrong order (System Software fourth, not first), wonder why 1340 is running like a pig. Device Manager shows everything as it should be, but it clearly isn't.

    3. Losing will to live, I upgrade to W7 beta. Yes, I know, I know. But... peace, at last. No freezes, radically faster, everything working. Or so it seemed for the first 10 minutes. I then notice that the Hybrid SLi is no longer so Hybrid (Power Saver setting only). Check forums, find that it's a common issue with Windows 7.

    4. Lost will to live, so I try Factory Restore. Maybe it'll be different from the first time round. I discover that W7 has overwritten the Dell Factory Restore option. Do a little research, and find out that I can run PC Restore from the Recovery Drive using that Vista install disk and Command Prompt. Works, at the second time of trying, so back to where I started...

    5. Restored Factory Image launches, and freezes after 30 seconds. I try Windows Update, and it freezes again, mid-install. I throw a rope over beam, and grab a chair.

    6. During this entire mind-numbing process, the LED lights to the front left-hand edge of the XPS have been burning my retina. The 1340 arrived without the plastic cover to those indicators. I call Dell, and ask if they'll send me the plastic cover. They can't, I'm told. The 1340 is made in China, and anyway, the plastic bit fits from the inside out, so we'd need to take the machine apart to fit it.

Luckily, I found a polite, efficient Dell Support guy (if you're reading this, thanks) who agreed to replace the XPS immediately - no six week wait. At 4pm today, I got the confirmation note that it has been dispatched.

And I'm sucker enough to be looking forward to it. For a laptop that doesn't actually work, the XPS 13 has acres of potential - the keyboard is excellent, and for a few brief seconds, it ran HL2 very well.

If someone finds a 6ft 4in guy clutching a Vista disk hanging from a rope somewhere in London next week, at least you know what happened.

lol you're right... not enough details. I wish I could use the LAN exclusively but it's internal only. External monitor all day, I used to have 2 computers but it becomes a pain. Is there a way to leave the LAN plugged in all day but turn it off or on through windows? If I have wifi and lan both active, the 1340 always goes to the LAN.

I had that problem. I suspect it's a graphics problem similar to the sleep mode issue Vista sometimes had, like you say. I didn't find a fix as I went back to Vista soon after. Mine only did it if I left the laptop for a few minutes, but it didn't seem to be related to sleep mode.

MS just means they won't support it natively, without 3rd-party drivers. Same in Vista where you need the NVIDIA drivers.

I know it's a bit late now, but did you find my old post where I fixed that? It's just a matter of installing the drivers off the Dell CD first, then you can let Win 7 install the newer drivers it wants, but it should keep letting you use Hybrid SLI.

The easiest way is to create a shortcut to your Network connections:

    C:\windows\system32\ncpa.cpl

Then you simply right click on the relevant connection (ethernet/wireless) and enable or disable it.

    :)

Hello guys, my SXPS13 finally arrived today at 2 pm. It's actually one day earlier. I got wobbly feet but it can be solved. The interesting is that i don't get any bloatware or something. So i just go directly to the windows updates that never run before. Suprising, I didn't get anyBOSD. Everything is working fine now. i just need to check the DVD drive and that's all.
