Does this mean that I cannot have a monitor on the HDMI and a monitor on the VGA port at the same time? My work require that I use 2 monitors. Will this be possible with the XPS 13 ?
-
I havent had a chance to read the entire manual, but the post you are talking about describes a DisplayPort and the HDMI, not the VGA port. They are different things. Now, whether or not you can use the HDMI and the VGA port at the same time, I dont know.
Here is a pic of the ports on the side of the 1340
http://boeglin.org/static/studio_xps_13/P1000124.JPG
From the left: VGA, Ethernet, USB, DisplayPort, HDMI -
ok I see thanks for the reply. Anyone has tried the VGA + HDMI on two separate monitors at the same time?
-
Anyone care to post details on the facial recognition software?
-
Any pictures of the 1340 yet? how's the battery life on this one? it should at least be as good as the m1330 battery...or??
-
Justin, so you don't have a problem with the keyboard? no key wobble? what about that vent issue, does it seem to be a problem?
What about the display? and dead pixels? use dead pixel buddy to find out, I doubt you will have any on a 13" but it doesn't hurt to check
Is the display on par with the m1330? what about the brightness, how many nits? I'm really hoping the led display in the 1340 is the same as the m1330 or better, that was a great screen
if you have the ability I'm sure everyone in this thread would appreciate some pics/movie/review of your new xps 1340
-
Theoretically, VGA + <some_other_port> should work. So either VGA+DVI, VGA+DispalyPort, VGA+HDMI should work nicely.
-
looking at the xps 13 im not liking the keyboard it looks like the mac keyboards which i think are horrible...i just wish my m1530 keyboard was backlit since i can type on them for hours and not have hand aches
-
Here are some pictures from pipomolo42.
-
I guess my only worry is the keyboard issue but after being used to the biometric scanner on my HP I would feel naked without something. So how's that facial recognition software?
-
Thats the thing though, of the two users who have posted about the keyboard issue, one had a problem with it and the other say they keyboard constructions was solid. So who knows if pipomolo42 just had a bad build or if the other user just got lucky. I am hoping that its an isolated issue cause I plan to buy an 1340 for my fiancee as a graduation present and a 1640 for me (just because!

Can anyone tell me what warranties they have been getting with their systems? 1-4 years and what about the accidental coverage? I am just curious to see what the majority of people are getting.
I remember reading in either this thread or the 1640 thread, that if you call Dell with your order, they may not give you a monetary discount, but an extension of the warranty. Any truth to that?
With all the problems that people have been reporting with the 1340, I would rather be safe than sorry. -
about the battery :
* using Performance mode, I have a bit more than 2 hours of autonomy
* using Energy saving mode, I have a bit more than 3 hours of autonomy
These are with wifi, bluetooth and keyboard backlight off, and screen backlight to the minimum value.
Also, I don't have dead pixels, but I think there are two grain of dusts stuck between the screen and its cover (one in the top left and the other one in the bottom right corner) -
i actually think the macbook keyboards are really good. which is probably why most manufacturers are going to that style now. apple, sony, now dell
-
Can you please confirm that you are not having those keyboard issues seen in the video, where each key was wobbling/moving when pressed on the edge?
I hope that was just one isolated issue. Now if that's true, that leaves me with only 1 issue: smudges on the surface.
-
Except you probably won't be able to use the laptop screen if you're using two external monitors I think; I remember a discussion in another thread (no link sorry).
-
Yes, that's right. Normally, in such a scenario, the notebook would be on a docking station, with its lid closed, and an external keyboard and mouse connected. Docking is optional though, and besides, XPS series do not support docking stations (there's no port for that).
-
I'm back with a few more thoughts.
The Keyboard is designed for the keys to move slightly due to the blacklight. They aren't wobbly just not rigid, they feel good and the typing action is very good, short travel and very responsive. It really isn't an issue at all, just a design feature.
The screen is every bit as good as the M1330 if not a bit better, there is less bleeding and the brightness easily matches the 1330's 300nits.
I have had the laptop on energy saving mode for 2 hours, with both the backlight on and wireless on, the screen at 50% I still have over one 1.5 hours of battery life left, so I reckon just over 3.5 hours in this mode.
No Dead pixels, no dust or grit. It gets warm but not uncomfortably so. The air does blow out of the vent infront of the screen however it doesn't heat the screen up at all due to the angle so nothing to worry about there either.
All in all I am very impressed, definitely looks and feels nicer than the M1330, seems nice and quiet and extremely responsive. I will see if I can get some video/pictures done over the next few days. Feel free to ask any questions. -
Thanks!
Did you choose the discrete graphics option (9500M GE)? How is the performance? Especially if you have done any gaming or other demanding tasks so far. Anything noticeably annoying as far as performance goes?
Can't wait to order mine - was going to last night but had a power blackout.
-
nice, thanks
it's hilarious to me people that just find a reason to hate any new product
"it's black" "DEALBREAKER!!1!" -
Good news! Mine is now in the boxing stage. It was in testing for about a day and a half. Maybe they'll ship it out tonight? I wonder how long boxing usually takes? With the latest positive review of the system, I'm excited to test it out myself.
-
Haha, I'm glad. I was only worried about the keys, but that'll be fine. I plan on purchasing by the end of next week. Horray.
Theguac, would you mind sending me a PM with your rep's name and extension? Did you have a EPP, because I'm going to be purchasing using my school's EPP. -
Yep I went for the discrete graphics option, so far haven't tested it, will run a 3dmarks06 tomorrow and put a couple of games on to see. Performance so far on battery mode has been excellent.
-
Thanks a lot!!!! I'd appreciate if u can test the notebook with some benchmark like 3dmark, pcmark and also with some heavy game (crysis or something like that) obviously if u can and if you have time
THX
EDIT: ok u've just answered I'll look forward to your tests!!!!! THX
-
Ok, silly question: Assuming you don't touch the palm rests with fingers, but only wrists, does it look very bad? Coz I don't wanna have a notebook that I'm afraid to touch
LOOOL

I still want to know if the 9400 card can handle HD video (720p, 1080i, 1080p) without stuttering. I'm not a gamer but I record a lot of HD programming OTA and my dv2500t cried every time I tried to play something higher than 720p. Knowing this could save me a $100 dollars or so.
-
The integrated 9400M chipset has hardware accelerated h.264 decode, yes. I don't remember what software is required to use it, but it is supported in hardware.
-
There's only a couple people with this computer. Even the rest of us who ordered on 1/8/2009 haven't gotten them yet. Can't believe you're already paranoid about all the problems. LOL.
-
Oops, forgot to answer your question on warranties.
I went with 1 year. DELL will send you something to add to it in the future, probably a few months before your warranty expires. I'll upgrade my warranty at that time. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
That means it has a Synaptics touchpad, which are good. -
I can't believe Dell never advertised a multi-touch touchpad. Weird.
-
are we actually sure it has multitouch?
the link to the manual online says "note:your pc may not support this feature"
strange... -
Yeah I was about to ask that too. No one's mentioned it yet. Can someone with the computer please verify that it exists? Thanks!
-
Hi!
I'm building a 1340 currently on the EPP website to replace my aging Inspiron 6000.
Does anyone know if you can get better deals over the phone? I've never placed an order with Dell in any other way than online. If so, do the reps have ext. numbers so you can continuously deal with the same person? Any recommendations/exts for a good sales rep?
Thanks in advance!
Heather
p.s. Sorry for the potentially repetitive questions, I'm a newb

Hmmm... the Setup Guide, p 25 mentions it. And in more details on page 26. Neither mention that it's only available in certain areas:
"Touchpad Circular Scrolling and Zoom Settings
To change the circular scrolling and zoom
settings, double-click the Dell Touchpad icon on
the right side of the taskbar.
In the Scrolling tab, you can enable or disable
scrolling or circular scrolling, choose the scroll
zone width, and scroll speed.
In the Gestures tab, you can enable or disable
one finger zoom (zoom in and out moving the
finger upward or downward) or the pinch zoom
(zoom in and out by spreading two fingers or by
bringing two fingers together).
--From the 1340 Setup Gude PDF from the link I posted earlier. -
Yes, in my experience you can get good deals over the phone - and don't worry, if you decide not to buy then the rep will practically force their extension on you - they like making sales (just ask for the extension if they don't offer it).
So far I have found they try and throw in free/discounted accessories or upgrades rather than making the system cheaper (especially if you are using an EPP discount). Try for a sleeve/case, extra warranty, delivery options, other accessories (you can sometimes get a free printer or monitor but that depends on what they have in surplus).
Just try and keep calling different people if you don't like the deal you are getting - some are more likely to haggle then others.
Oh yes, post here what kind of deal you got (extras etc) and what country you are from - that way everyone can compare! -
Not paranoid
just don't want my fiancee to go through these issues when I purchase one for her.
Just like I said earlier, I am going to get this laptop for her, and the 1640 for me, but the less I have to hear her complain about something going wrong with the laptop the better it is for me. I work in IT in Nebraska and I hear computer problems all day long. I would prefer to keep that from happening at home too.
-
I see now what you guys are talking about The Tech Guide where it has a disclaimer about feature availability.
-
Awesome, thanks for the comparison to the M1330. Makes the decision a lot easier for me now

I still prefer the looks of my red m1330. The leather is very blasé on the studio xps.
-
Dell cancelled my order (esd 20/2) and now i have esd March 2nd
(XPS 13) -
I definitely know what I'm talking about, I've been in I.T working for a top bank and thousands of laptops for the past 10 years have a computer science degree and CCNA certified, I think you are the one that is clueless.
Do the math and compare the screens. Especially on a 13"3 inch you want to be viewing your work not scrolling all the time. A smart user understands you need to be productive on a laptop especially if it has a 13"3 inch screen.
I didn't say to pay $1000 more for a 1600x900...you said that. Sony is not the only vendor. I said Dell should offer it as an option and I don't think it would be $1k more. It would be max $200-$300, I would definitely pay the extra to get extra 30% more viewing and workable space and that is significant anyway you look at it. If it had that specific option especially with an LED screen it would be a perfect laptop. Its also categorized as a high end laptop no reason for Dell not to include 1600x900 as an option on a premium notebook. Because if they don't offer it then their competitors will.
Know what you're talking about next time you respond....you only look foolish if you don't. -
I've read through this screen resolution discussion on page 19 of this thread, and I'm going to agree with others that 1280x800 is a perfectly acceptable resolution for a 13.3" screen. Even some 15.4" notebooks still have 1280x800 as the default native resolution. Also, give taude's response a read:
And finally, having an IT degree and working in IT have no relation at all with a person's knowledge of laptops. -
Oh no
Did they give any reason? Was something on backorder?
March 2nd...that's a month away.
You may want to contact your Rep, and ask for an Upgrade on shipping or something for reasonable compensation for what has happened.

Totally agree with you, I am actually a Chartered IT Professional and this has no bearing whatsoever on my knowledge of laptops or screen resolutions.
-
you are funny
-
Other than the Sony Z, what other vendors have a ___x900 resolution on a 13.3" screen?
I'm really not aware of any. And the Sony seems to be the only one offering it on their Viao Z (which is a 13.1" screen, so some custom panel made only for them?). Also, would prefer to hear about only laptops available in the US, since most of the LGs and many of the ASUS aren't. Thanks. -
While I agree that IT degrees has little bearing on your level of computer knowledge, lets be civil with each other and stay on topic!
Has anyone had any bleeding issues like they are describing in the 1640 thread? Have I just missed the posts about it? -
yo guys im from Sydney and purchased the 1340 last thursday, the first week it was released here, and it was delivered yesterday (wednesday)..
it took 5 days to get here.
anyway specs are as follows
2.53ghz
9500M-GE
500gb sata
4gb
WXGA (1280x800) WLED
price aus: $1989.00 -
What did you get for a wireless card option? I ordered mine with the N-flavor and I'm pretty sure that's what's holding it up in production now, since when I go to the Dell config page they have the "may cause a delay in your order" message.
(Though, it seems that no one in the U.S. has gotten theirs, but people in Australia and Europe.)
