How do you like it? How's the keyboard?

I'm from the US and mine is currently in the boxing stage. My Dell rep told me it should be delivered this week, so once I get it, I'll give a review.

Peeps, anyone tried installing xp on this one? which one of the graphic cards will the laptop be using running on XP then, 9400m g or 9200gs? Curious because hybrid SLI only works with Vista if I'm not wrong. And will hybrid SLI work with the upcoming Windows 7?

I guess a driver will be released to win 7 to make it work, once win 7 is released.. I cant imagine that it would not.

Im running vista ultimate 64bit, it's much better than 32!

Wireless card: Dell(TM) Wireless 1515 (802.11a/g/n) Mini-Card [Included in Price]

I've got to say this laptop is amazing guys, and anyone who's waiting it's definitely worth it.

Up until today with Dell Aus you could pretty much only order the highest end 1340 as standard with the only choice of a 32 bit or 64bit vista as the customise option. That's probably why it shipped so fast I assume because they were already made for us based on the static specs.

That's encouraging news. So your keyboard then doesn't have the flex/bad build quality that we've heard before? Do you want to run any 3DMark scores? How fast does it feel to you even with Vista on it?

Just ordered my 1340 in the UK! Very excited although ESD isn't until the 26/02/09 :-(

    Got P8400/9500/4GB RAM/LED Display/BT

Dell UK have a special deal on at the moment £50 off and a new configuration what would have cost me almost £1050 last week only cost me £919 today!

sportschoice2: How about the fingerprints on the palmrest? It's the only thing that keeps me from ordering, I just can't stand a laptop who gets filthy by just looking at it.

LOOOOOOOOOL. Dude, Dell lost you as a customer, and Michael Dell will silently weep tonight.

EDIT: ok, enough about resolution. it is perfect for anybody who considers this notebook, and that's all that really matters.

The fingerprints on the palmrests are minimal especially as it should be your palms on them :) Seriously not bad at all, certainly nothing to stop you considering purchasing it.

On my screen (Wled) there is very little light bleed, different screen to the 1640.

This is like beating a dead horse here. I didn't say 1280x800 wasn't acceptable what I said was Dell should have an option for a 1600x900 resolution screen. I have stated this many times and some of view are still missing the point so let me explain it again.

Simply put.....a 1600x900 will provide you about 30% more viewing space than a resolution of 1280x800. As well, when viewing HD movies the quality of the picture will be obviously better at 1600x900. So if given the OPTION of either a 1280x800 to a 1600x900 screen then the later would be a much better option. If you want to stick with a 1280x800 that is your option but could be fine for you if you prefer the norm.

And whoever stated this comment, "And finally, having an IT degree and working in IT have no relation at all with a person's knowledge of laptops." doesn't even seem to know the extra percentage they will gain with the higher resolution but yet the IT person does so therefore I would have to say right now there is a relation.

And yes this is getting funny especially when I read peoples remarks regarding the screen issue.

of course 1600x900 is better than 1280x800
but 1280x800 isn't that bad, especially for a 13" laptop
the point is, 1280x800 is not a joke like you said it was
it's an adequate resolution for almost any human

    I ordered XPS 1340, Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 (2.53GHz/1066Mhz FSB 6M L2 Cache) on January 16, 2009.
    Shipping Method: Next Business Day
    Est. Ship Date: 2/9/2009
    Est. Delivery Date: 2/10/2009

It's now in day 2 of testing.
Do you think I will receive it by Feb 5?

    Thanks.
If you need more details let me know. I have an ssd also, will that slow it down?

Hollywood when will you understand that we understand about the extra real estate etc etc, have you thought that for most people as shown on these forums they are more than happy with the current offering. If you want the 1600 screen go and buy a laptop that gives you the real estate you want. I have a Z series sitting on my desk at the moment, nice but overpriced.

As for my professional qualifications and the extra percentage gained, have a further read...I think you miss the point entirely!

Let us please stop this discussion now and go back on topic. In my opinion this thread is for questions, pictures, reviews, info and first impressions of the new XPS 13.
When I chose to follow this thread and there is an update, I hope to read new user impressions, not the ongoing discussion irrelevant for the specific model.

    Thanks

I hate to keep this pointless resolution discussion going, but no-one's noticed Dell wouldn't have an option for 1600x900 because it's a different aspect ratio. The Dell is a 16:10 screen and the Sony is 16:9, like the 1640 - it'd have to be 1600x1000. Of course I get the fact that you're really just saying they should offer higher resolution options. I agree actually, but 1280x800 is fine for most applications.

Also to keep on topic, my 1340 should arrive today hopefully, so I could answer any more questions people have. I'll be running Windows 7.

Anyone tried to play games on the 1340? I know there are benchmarks, but how are the actual performance on games like WAW, Far Cry 2, or maybe even Crysis?

My m1330 was fine running COD4 on highest resolution, but couldn't run WAW smoothly in the lowest res.

Of course a lot of this is CPU and RAM related, and this is a 13''inch laptop not meant to gaming... but I just want to see what this baby can handle.

Remember that no operating system (Windows, MacOS, etc.) supports Hybrid SLI natively. However, nVidia drivers for Vista and higher (Windows 7) will enable Hybrid SLI mode. Since you ask about XP, I assume that you don't like Vista, so I suggest you to try Windows 7 instead, it's a better XP if you will. But, if you decide to install XP, then the system will use only 1 GPU at a time, and you will have to manually switch between 9400M G and 9200M GS, rebooting every time you decide to switch them. Both cards can be used, but only one at a time.
    HTH

Now back to the central theme of this thread: screen resolutions and aspect ratios. Oh, wait... :D

My ESD was 2/16. I had 2 days of testing and it went into boxing yesterday. It is still in boxing and I don't know how long that takes. My configuration is similar to yours and it wasn't delayed by doing the SSD--in fact, it might have sped it up. I think if my computer ships by tomorrow, you should get yours by Febr. 5. If not, you probably won't =(.

Have you contacted Dell to find out where you *factually* sit in the build process? You can do that. Automated dial is normally more accurate then your dell account site ;)

What do you guys think about the weight of the laptop? Is it too heavy to carry around? Do you think the weight makes it feel more solid, or was it simply a blunder on Dell's part, considering the 1330 and Sony Z are a pound lighter?

So who will be the first to pop in a T9600 and see if it burns up? Curious since they only come with the P-series 25w cpus, I assume the 35w cpus just run to hot for the cooling system.

    Got mine.

It's heavy for a 13" laptop. Too heavy? Nah.

It supports up to a 9600 (2.66Ghz). They just haven't released it yet. See here, Tech Specs tab.

    Hardware:
Everything seems fine. I can't turn the keyboard backlight off but I think I just need to install QuickSet for that, which I'll do soon. The fan is kind of blocked by the screen as noted earlier. Some hot air comes up in front of the screen (which is better than going nowhere). It seems a bit silly but you'd assume they must have noticed that in the design stage.

The optical makes a horrible clacking noise when I insert a disc but then everything works fine, and the disc is fine, so . Does anyone else get that?

It's glossy but It's not really getting fingerprint marks. Do you guys have super greasy fingers?

People wanted to know what brand of SSD it'd be. It's a Samsung RBX.

    Software:
I did a clean install of Win 7. It installed some NVidia drivers automatically through windows update, but there was no Hybrid SLi. The 9200m had no drivers and the 9400m showed as a generic card. Device manager showed a lot of motherboard components had no drivers.

I installed the motherboard drivers off the Dell driver CD (thanks for still supplying CDs Dell!), and the latest Nvidia drivers from their site (they provide notebook drivers now, finally). Now the motherboard was fine and the 9200m had drivers, but the 9400m still showed as generic and there was no hybrid SLI.

SO, I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and installed the ones off the Dell CD. Now everything is working properly - I have hybrid SLI etc. There's one "Unknown Component" left in Device Manager that I can't work out though - it's not bluetooth, wi-fi or infra-red.

Unknown component might be the card reader? Insert some memory cards and see if it works. Or the web cam, try it too.

Congrats on your system! Tell us more, please:
    - Is the keyboard comfortable to type?
    - Do the keys wobble like in the video?

The guy I have been talking to gave me a great deal even though the prices in Australia have gone up about $500.
All the specs as of yesterday plus an extra year of warranty plus the 'specially designed' studio xps sleeve for $2164. (AUD)
    I am so happy!
    Delivery within 7-10 working days.
    PM me for details.

    To anyone installing Windows 7:

There's a known issue with Windows 7, that it corrupts MP3 files when you try to play them. Microsoft released a patch for that. Make sure you install the patch before you attempt to access/play your MP3 files on Windows 7, if you don't wanna ruin your music collection. You've been warned, guys!

I think my unknown device is the eSATA port, considering everything works except eSATA. Nothing on the Dell CD for it, except the main motherboard drivers which I've installed. Hmm.

Edit for more content: There's already a new BIOS version out on Dell's site.

I just want mine shipped before Monday because supposedly Nashville might get a huge snowstorm (9+ inches) on Monday and Tuesday, which will bring business to a screeching halt in the city, including the Dell production plant. Nashville is not equipped for such a huge snowstorm...3-4 inches, yes...but not 9 inches. At least we get to play in the snow!

Hollywood, if you still did not get it, people are reacting to these statements of yours: first, mistaking the resolution for something lower; next calling it "pittyful"; and finally, saying that it's a joke:

Obviously being an IT person for a decade does not make you aware that 1280x800 is a perfectly normal (and common) resolution for a 13" screen. This resolution is not pitiful nor a joke.

I went down to the local Dell Kiosk here in Melbourne (also to escape the 43C heat here) and they had the Studio XPS 1340 there.

It feels and looks great. The keyboard feels fine, and the WLED LCD is very vibrant and sharp compared to the standard LCDs.

I'll try to see if I can get a better deal on this laptop and wriggle out of the recent price increase... but for some reason the board won't let me send PMs. :(

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention, yes the touchpad is multi-touch. Gestures seemed to work out-of-the-box for the display model I played around with. I zoomed in/out while using internet explorer using gestures, and while cool I'm not sure if it's all that useful. :p

On a side note, it sounds like orders are shipping before the ESD, any truth to that? I live 20 miles north of nashville, TN - is that where the 1340 is being built?

If so, , wish they would just let me pick it up at the factory.

I live close to you!! Mine is in boxing...I should just pick it up. I don't care about the box anyway...clutter! And since when does boxing take longer than building and testing the computer?! How's about that big storm next week? =)

The box is important, because in case you decide to send it back, you must send it in that box. :) Of course, boxing doesn't take that long, normally a couple of minutes, it's just that status message stays that way longer that it is in real.

I agree, in a web browser it's not too useful, but say in a 3D CAD program you can't even imagine how useful it is :)
