    Hello everyone

I have updated the BIOS and Graphic Card to A 06 but it still freezes sometimes. What should I do? Is this problem going to be solved by Dell or is it a permanent problem of XPS 13's hardware?

    Thank you

    Onur

My computer used to freeze very often but only when used in a semi idle mode (browsing and reading webpages). It never froze during high loads (gaming for instance). For me the new bios completely solved the freezing so I think it was a fan algorithm problem that allowed the computer to overheat (the fan is on all the time now, but it doesn't bother me at all). You should also try the trick that other people used. When the computer freezes, shut it down, remove the battery, and press the power button for 30 seconds or so. If that doesn't work either maybe it's best to just return it imo.
The studio xps 13 really is a lovely machine now that the freezing issue is gone.

My computer has the built in graphics card because I do not play any games.
I would say if you are not doing anything graphic intensive to just buy this laptop with the build in graphics.. I have never had any freezing problems.. and now that my cpu is undervolted, my laptop runs a lot cooler.

;) I got the 9500M hybrid sli card but TBH i don't think it really gives much of a boost in graphics performance:/ Also, unless the program or game you're running can take advantage of SLI graphics, it won't help at all.

I run mine with hybrid disabled most of the time. It keeps the heat down ;)

I have 9500m but I do agree it is pretty useless. Most of the older games that work perfect on this machine run BETTER with just integrated graphics because they have no sli profiles. If I were to buy a new laptop now I would chose just integrated graphics. The added 9200GS is pretty useless because the games that can use sli run very slow anyway. As it is it's just an added weight as you can just disable it with no other downside.

My windows 7 64 bit ust died on me.. I was using it and all of the sudden it was giving me like 2 minute delays to open anything on my desktop. I rebooted and again.. same thing.. slow opening firefox or anything on my desktop.. I am back to using vista 64bit.. Windows 7 is really not worth using.. vista is faster I think

Has any one try installing a SXPS 1640 BD dvd in the 13" model I know the 1640 is a 12.7mm drive and the 1340 is a 9.5 but in the M1330 for exemple you could just scrap the bottom and fit a m1530 bd in it can this be done on the 1340?

    Thanks.

I installed windows 7 rc1 32 bit the day it came out on my 1340 with no problems since. I was web browsing and streaming music from Pandora this morning and it just froze. The CPU usage wasn't even 100% when it happens. i restart it and it freezes after about a minute. I'm reinstalling it now, i didn't even have anything installed on it except Firefox and Office 07. I really like windows 7 it seems faster than vista. I hope it was just a one time issue.

May I remind you that windows 7 rc is still a release candidate that microsoft is testing with people willing to take the risk to endure a few bugs.
ex: tomorrow they will deliver fake updates via windows update just totest the windows uodate solution on a large scale.

so your bug can be related to a lot of variables. i am writing this memo for windows 7 rc 64bits, so far so good.

If you have the SLI configuration you better just wait until Dell or nVidia release drivers for the 1340 and Windows 7.

You can still use the Vista drivers from Dell with no issues. It's trying to use the newer, Windows 7-specific drivers that causes problems.

My windows 7 64bit freezes up for no reason also.. Back to using Vista 64 which I think is just as fast as win 7 64bit.

By the way, I went to smartsource.dell.com to download the extra software for my 1340 like Face Recognition and Webcam software etc.. and when I try to have it scan and register my system, it gives me an application error so I went and chatted with Dell Tech Support and they connected to my PC and saw the problem.
They sent me software via Overnight shipment the next day .. tons of cd's 1. face recognition 2. webcam 3. Roxio 4. Vista Home Premium 64bit install 5. Powerdvd 6. Drivers

All of those cd's that I did not get with my refurb system when they sent it to me! =D

Just got my XPS 1340 and so far its great :)

I would like to be sure that it is exactly what I ordered.

Its easy to check if they installed the right cpu/ram etc. But how can I tell the difference between the LED screen and the standard screen. (I ordered it with the LED screen)?

I spoke with dell and to order the LED screen it would cost $450. My system is refurbished so that is the reason why I wasn't able to get LED screen.

I found it on ebay for $250 with free shipping. Is it worth spending that much money just to upgrade to the LED?

I know some people have been wanting to change the way Hybrid SLI switch works.. If you don't like changing via the power profile method then I've found a new way.

    1. Uninstall your current nVidia Display Drivers from the control panel (remember on the display drivers!) and restart your system.

    2. Install DOX's hybrid graphics drivers from the following link:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23698

    3. Restart your system.

    4. Install DOX's 185.68 drivers from the following link:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23676

    5. Finally restart your system once more.
And you should end up with something like the following:

Note this will stop you from being able to change SLI mode via power profiles.

That's a nice thing to do if you don't like having to have Hybrid Sli on when you're on High Performance. However this doesn't bug me because I use mine on Balanced practically all the time ;)

Got my hands on a refurbished one P8600, 4 GB ram 320gb 7200rpm HD, WLED! screen and the usual standard feature for $690 shipped! but my hard drive (seagate momentus 7200.3 with DE17 firmware) has a strange sound when being moved around at an angle. Sort like a buzzing, whining sound. But the HD is otherwise quiet enough when sitting still or being moved slowly.
Dell told me its a bad hard drive and they are shipping me a new one, but I'm not sure if it's broke or is it the free fall sensor reigning in the reader when I move it fast at an angle thinking the laptop is dropping to prevent damage. Anyone's 13 have this noise or input?

The slot load dvd in the 1340 is a piece of crap.. I burned a music cd .. only 40mb and it failed.. the buffer only shows at 97% .. my older laptop showed always 99-100%
Makes strange noises and sucks bad

I was able to burn one successfully.. but it just sucks

    24x speed... I think..
It's one of those things where you set it to burn then you leave the room and let it burn.. You should not have to think about it
or worry about it failing to burn a music cd.. no matter what speed it is set to

I should be receiving my SXPS 1340 next week and I was wondering:

Does the latest Win 7 x64 work well with the Studio XPS 13?

Has anyone tried this and is hybrid sli working correctly?

Would you recommend Win 7 for using general programs such as office, photoshop, utorrent etc.?

Also the best way to make a separate partition to install win 7 without losing any dell partitions (if any)?

    Thanks

I returned my refurbished system since it already seems like it has issue with the hard drive and it seems it had fitment issues around the LCD.

Instead I ordered another refurbished system with the following...

So for $237 more I got the LED screen and faster processor. I couldn't find any coupon to use with the outlet store for the replacement system.

Did I get a descent deal?

hi all, i bought my 1340 3 weeks ago (best buy), and i am still experiencing troubles. i updated bios to a06, yesterday i re-installed vista (home premium) for 2nd time (i formatted the partition before installing the system) because of slowing down. i fugured out, that one cpu suddenly goes to 100% and second balancing between 50-100% also. but suddenly. there's no reason for it. for example, in the middle of some movie i am watching. unfortunately, it happened again. i hate this. has (or had) somebody similar troubles?
i already read that there are troubles also with win 7.
what should i do? some recommendations please? :(
i love this notebook, it is really fast when wista works. ...or is there any way to get my money i paid for vista back? i am really thinking about switching to linux...
    thank you...

I'd say for $1,000, its a great deal, considering its got the 6MB Cache processor, LED, 9500M, and best of all the 128GB SSD. Vista Ultimate is meh...not much special about it, but there are a few perks. Install Windows 7 and you're set to go with a SUPER FAST 1340.

How's new window 7 for gaming? I heard about window 7, but do they have all the drivers for xps 13? If yes, are they stable?

Thanks :) but mine is scratch & dent refurb, so hope it comes with great condition.

Windows 7 is fine for gaming.

There's not one thing that hasn't worked in Win7 for me, so anytime anybody asks about gaming, performance, crashes, drivers, etc, I can tell them that IT WORKS.

The reason Win7 works fine with everything that did on Vista is because its built as an improvement on Vista, Microsoft didn't redesign the kernel and other things deep in the OS that causes incompatibilities.

Well, my Studio XPS 13 was delivered today. I fell in love with it.

We are about to break up though. The DVD drive is terrible on this thing. And my 55 minute support chat with Dell hasn't done much to improve the relationship. I told the agent that the drive wasn't reading 95% of the discs, either professionally pressed or content that I burned. It also took Vista 2 and a half hours to reinstall to a freshly formatted drive. A whole lot of grinding, crunching, and spinning on the drive's part.

So I opened up Support Chat. The tech was... well, let's put it this way. Her responses included...

    - "let's check regedit"
    - "Your disc must be broken"
    - "You are missing an installation file to use the DVD drive to copy files"
    - "I don't see any problem with the drive" (this one came after she remoted in and saw it crash during a basic copy/paste)

It took almost an hour to get her to send a tech out.

Ugh. And on the first night of using the machine, too. :(

Oh, and for the record, this is using the HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GS20N drive
