I recently bought a 1340 and am attempting to downgrade to Windows XP. I've run into a problem with installing video drivers for my Geforce 9400m. It appears that the computer isn't seeing the video card at all, as nvidia's own driver install program claims that there is no video card present. Device manager sees a driverless "VGA Adapter" but can not identify the card either.
I've installed the chipset drivers, which worked successfully as far as I can tell. I also don't have any better luck with older drivers from nvidia, so now I'm wondering if this is some kind of common issue with this laptop.
Does anyone have any ideas?

update:
Tech came out. repalced the dvd burner. For a while it was better. When I was transfering files (from cds) it sometimes would stop but the computer did not lock up. Bare in mind that the same cd''s that froze in this computer did not freeze on my desktop
I figured oh well maybe they are issueing a bad quality dvd burner and so on. Today I gave it a test after reinstalling all the drivers from the site, and updating the dvd burner (like I did with the old one) Guess what we got a lock up
Dam it (to make matters worse when I was on the phone with dell on call the unit was acting ok.) I was ready to throw this thing into the garbage. But I'm going to go to someones house who knows how to talk to these people and try to either get a repalcement computer or have them change the board. If that don't work well I blew a $1000.00 Other than that I love this computer but hey. -
If you had a technician like I got today then you'll be just fine as he had a hard time figuring out what he was doing. Spent almost all of his time on the phone with a REAL technician pointing the way lol

Hey guys, what are the remaining "issues" with the 1340, a lot of the threads about the 1340 are from a while ago (February) so its difficult to tell if updates have fixed problems.
Please correct me if I'm wrong;
So far it looks to me like the updated BIOS has fixed the heat issue somewhat. Is the fan loud?
The dpc latency issue has not been fixed but may be fixed soon. (1640 was fixed).
Occasional freezing *shrug* from what I can tell.
I'm going to be buying soon, and I've pretty much ruled out the sxps13 due to being buggy. If this is not the case I'd be very happy to reconsider. It looks like an awesome laptop, but I would hate to go through the pain and heartache some people have posted about. I apologize for not researching more thoroughly. Thank you very much for your help. -
The bottom will still get pretty warm...the bottom is cover is metal, metal conducts heat better than plastic so more heat will be transfered from the heat pipes and components to the case. Most state it runs cooler with newer BIOS, but don't expect a miracle. No matter what, it's a 13" notebook with powerful hardware. There weren't actual temperature problems with the components, just more heat got through the case and made it uncomfortable to put on your lap.
No clue on the latency issue
Freezing seems to have been helped with A06 BIOS and cured with A07.
I don't have a 1340 (yet, it's on it's way to me) but I research things like this as much as I can before I purchase. -
-
This laptop scares me. Why do you break out hearts DELL?!?!
-
Lot's of peep's use external monitors!A 24" is a very good size!
What one are you looking at? Dell has some good deals on external monitors right now!
Not overkill at all w/what you want to do!

I am currently eyeing on a Samsung T240HD which is a PC monitor/TV combo. I want to get 1920x1200 PC native resolution and not 1080p (1920x1080). I know Dell also has several good deals on monitors, but unfortunately they don't build many HDMI monitors...

Has annyone been able to find a decent driver for the 9500m GE yet?
because the latest driver from DOX is for 64bit only and i got 32bit.
Does annyone even know if the current driver from Nvidia the
(179,82) is optimal for these 2 cards?
because i kinda wanna play CoD4 on 1280x800
without having tht choppy FPS rate.
Thanks in advance. -
Considering buying a 1340 soon. Will probably go for:
2.66Ghz
4Gb
256GB SSD
Vista 64
Sensible? Will be doing general work, audio production (lots of VSTi and plugins), audio processing and will be travelling around with it a lot, hence the 13" screen. I will use an external 19" when at home with it. I also like the idea of trying a SSD now the capacity is realistic and the price is lower.
I will probably have to build a docking station for it - a box with a usb hub inside, and a load of wires taped together for audio, vga, usb and firewire I can whack in when its at my desk. -
I don't understand all the freezing problems! I still have my Dell Vista install and it has never once locked up! I DO have the DPC latency though.

Hey guys, how r u doing?
I need a quick help. A friend of mine is comming from the us and he's going to bring a notebook for my brother (witch is only 10! ). The thing is that he's comming on sunday, so i think that buying online is not an option.
I just checked best buy, and the have a 1340 with the 9400m... Is this very different from the other one that dell offers? Is this a good card? What kind of games will my brother be able to play? Can this computer play 1080p movies?
Overall, how do you guys like the machine? I know that it is very chiep (only $899)... Is it worth it? Very hot?
Tks in advance!
ps.: the best buy link > http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9150624&type=product&id=1218036666917 Is the screen on it a led one?
Forget to ask, and the batterie life?? Ah, and it does not come with a bluetooh adapter, right? Can I put one myself later? -
IMO the 9500 is not really any good. I tested crysis on hybrid sli and then just the 9400G. When on hybrid, crysis would run at the same framerate as the 9400, however hybrid would make the game stutter like every 3 seconds... Also hybrid made another game I tested stutter.
So forget about the 9500
The 9400 does handle games quite well considering it's a 13" notebook.
Mine ran crysis at ~20-30FPS on lowest settings.
The screen in the BB model is LCD versus the more expensive LED.
Both screens are 1280x800...800P
I find my 1340 to be a very nice 13" laptop. The base is nice and sturdy+it looks good. The backlit keyboard is very nice. And I like the slot loading dvd drive also. The battery give about 2 hrs on a 6cell, I don't know about the 9cell.
With the 9400M and P8600 CPU, it should run decently cool. Just remember to update to the A07 bios from dell.com/support because it speeds up the fan to make things run cooler.
Good luck if you decide pull the trigger ---------> -
I think I'll go for the computer... $899 is very nice price for a dell. Theres still one question that i have: can this computer play 1080p movies? I mean, I know it does not have the screen to do so, but if i conect it to a tv with hdmi will the movie lag? (I'm asking because my roomate got a mac that can play 720p movies, but when it comes to 1080p mkv files, it lags...)
Im also getting a wireless router.. This one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...oduct&id=1209772398404#tabbed-customerreviews
The wireless card is a dell one, right? Is it good? Any one using in n mode? -
how can i find out the FPS on games i am playing on this laptop. thnx

Ok guys, really need your help. I posted about this last week, but I'm on the verge of returning my M1340 since my 21 days will be coming up on Friday. I'm having problems with my internet speed, and I'm thinking its the hardware. I have a M1210 and when testing speed (SpeedNet, Speakeasy, etc.), my M1210 running XP (fresh copy) consistently is double the download speed of my M1340, and this is thru both a LAN and wireless connection. Weird thing is that upload and latency is the same on both machines, only download is suffering by half on the M1340. I've tried a lot of troubleshooting already:
-Fresh install of Vista Ultimate
-Fresh install of Windows 7
-Most updated drivers install (via Dell web)
-No Firewall installed (Vista firewall disabled)
-Bypass Linksys router, direct connect to dsl modem (w/different cables)
-One by one removal of components while testing LAN line (RAM, Bluetooth card, wireless card)
-Messing w/netsh command lines (toggling Autotunning, Chimney, RSS)
All the above still shows the M1340 with half download speed as my M1210. This makes downloading files and loading web pages irritatingly slow compared to my M1210. Does anybody have any ideas? I'm so clueless on why it's like that and am out of ideas. If I can't solve this by tonight, it's going back to Dell (I tried Dell support, but sorry to say, they are of no help). PLEASE HELP! -
Has anyone tried to play Empire total War on the 9400m. if so, on what details and what sort of fps are you getting. thnx

Hey guys, I have been thinking so much about buying this Laptop. I have been looking for a 12-13'' powerful Laptop with graphics and performance, that was still light enough to take with me on the road.
I love the design and features of this machine. I have never had a DELL, but people have told me these horrible things about DELL, their customer service and so on...
My other major concern about this Laptop, is the heat issue. My previous 15'' Laptop(Zepto) downlclocked itself with its 8600m GT 512 DDR2... But so many Laptops had problems with that card, but it just sucked so bad. I don't want to purchase an expenssive laptop again that downclocks itself because of heat like the 8600m GT did.
Other laptops I thought about; Asus N10(uses Atom, not powerful enough); Macbook(I need a fully Windows based system), Sony Vaio Z(Incredible expenssive), Asus F6V and LG P310(both not in my country).
Do you guys think I should go with this machine. Is there many Dell fans out there enjoying the machine and having no problems?
On notebookcheck it has gotten some favorable reviews from review sites; http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Studio-XPS-13-Series.15839.0.html
I just don't know if I dare to jump in. I don't mind heat. I understand that it's part of powerful hardware in small machine, but I just don't wanna be concerned with the machine burning down. -
Do you guys think I should go with this machine. Is there many Dell fans out there enjoying the machine and having no problems?
Hey buddy i bought this machine with base model specs and i have had no problems at all. I have had no problems with heat, not one BSOD or any wireless issues.
I would recommend just getting the 9400m as this could help with some heat issues and performance increases with the 9500 are minor.
Best laptop i have ever owed.
pull the trigger -
Re: luffytubby
The components themselves are not getting too hot. There's a few with overheating notebooks but very few. Most are stating that the components are operating at normal temperatures. I believe the bottom of the case is metal so it's going to conduct more heat from the components and heat pipes than most laptops that have a plastic bottom panel. -
So guys I finally bit the bullet last Friday and made an order for a Studio XPS 13 with the following specs:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 3MB Cache)
- 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- 4GB Dual-channel 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
- 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 9500M-GE with Hybrid SLI(R) Technology
- 6-Cell (56WHr) Li-Ion Primary Battery
This was a stock configuration (was the model up from the entry model @ $1999AUD - price including $100 cash off; came to $1799 w/ 10% discount code).
I ordered on Friday night (29-06-2009) and my order was accepted, payment authorized and build started on 01-06-2009. I checked my order and the estimated delivery date is slated for 24-06-2009! Is this correct or is the huge time-frame so that they ensure to delivery before this date?
For those owners in Australia, how long did it take for you to get your Studio XPS 13 delivered? 4 weeks is a LONG time in my opinion.
EDIT: NVM, found the thread on the order status. Cheers. -
It has a single HDMI port, D-Sub, 2xUSB, and can tilt 90 deg. And yes it does have a native resolution of 1920x1200 which works well with ATI3870 video.
Model L246WP-BN and I've been very happy with mine.

Hi guys, for those who have windows 7, you guys might want to change back to vista after the RC expired. According to microsoft, they will give free update for the people who have vista. However it will happen in october 22 so you guys might want to wait a little bit.
-
My brand new Studio XPS 13 arrived yesterday.
Well spec'd (256Gb SSD, 6Gb RAM) etc etc.
But we have some major problems Heuston.
Machines wobbles like crazy. Its VERY uneven and gets WORSE when you install the optional 9-cell battery.
Screen is totally WARPED. Yeah I couldn't believe this one. Pretty serious quality control problem. The top edge of the screen on the right hand side is all scratched dented slightly somehow, but when you close the screen, only the left-hand side touches the rubber stopper! Because the screen is warped, the right-hand side sits up about 5mm off the rubber stopper and you can see plain as day that the screen is totally bent out of shape.
Anyway, I emailed them pics and detailed descriptions of the faults/damage last night. Awaiting the official response from DELL as to what's happening.
But its certainly a major inconvenience for me and a sign of something serious going wrong with quality control. -
Yikes, that's worrisome to me, c9806103. I hope I don't run into the same issues when I receive mine!
Btw, what was the turn around time like for your order? -
-
So looks like Dell actually fulfilled my request to take my order as priority and now my estimated ship date has changed from 24-June to 11-June. This is great news. Thanks Dell! Hopefully this doesn't mean that they cut corners during the QC stages.

Dell Studio XPS 1340 is a disapointament, firt off all the the RIDICULOUS air compartment that is closed when you open the monitor (it has 4 and at least 2 stay closed) so the HOT air goes up right into the monitor, left speaker and left side of the keyboard so in 30 minutes all that part is VERY HOT, as well the buttom of the laptop. All this is almost in IDLE mode, just surfing the web and email, if i stress the machine with a game or other heavy application than its better to call the fireman. What kind of control quality and conception from the DELL Engeneering was made? The answer is NONE. I've tried many laptops from LG, HP, TOSHIBA with the same and better specifications and i don't get burned in my hands or legs, so there is no excuse other than bad conception. I already tried other 1340 and its the same, its a general problem. The cooling system of the 1340 its very basic, one very thin heatsink and a independent cooler but i think its enought to refresh the CPU/Chipset/GFX, maybe not. The main problem is the heat passing through the chassi, if i wanted a computer to use in my desk i would prefer buying a desktop computer instead. My monitor was a Samsung (SEC5441) but there was a problem of "flickering" so they changed it and the motherboars as well, for my surprise new monitor was a LG (LGD0145) i suppose it was better since LG/Philips has the better S-IPS Panels than the Samsung S-PVA, but i was wrong, LG has a weird color gamut specially light blues, dark reds and WHITES (too strong) specially when mixed with other colors, you lost definition specially in small objects, like icons, taskbar, letters. It seems a 6-Bit panel.
You can see that and more here:
LG LGD0145 | Samsung SEC5441
========================
Look specially to 12,13,14... (RED) in both pictures and 18 (ALL COLORS) are WHITE compared to Samsung panel.
http://img269.imageshack.us/i/24219540.jpg/ | http://img200.imageshack.us/my.php?image=61636742.jpg
Same here but closer, look to the lines (ALL COLORS) until 18. Very low definition you cannot distinguish the colors from the lines in LG panel.
http://img192.imageshack.us/my.php?image=32724702.jpg | http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7787/28347940.jpg
Once more 16,17 and 18 colours.

There's a Toshiba panel too, anyone? -

Can anyone confirm if the touchpad has multitouch? Notebookcheck.net are saying that it has but Hothardware say that it doesn't.
-
I does. You can use it to zoom in and out of pictures and other windows, including web pages.

Hi guys it's me again. I'm still having eh same problem. I've also done some other troubleshooting steps and came up with a Cause:
Update after the guy installed a new burner it didn't improove the sitcation. I called Dell wanting a new board however when watching my system it didn't freeze.
I've been trouble shooting more things.
The only time it worked (coping and pasting data from burner) was in safe mode. I then took it to normal mode and disabled the video driver (9400m g) and that worked also. (now we are getting somewhere.) I also tried disabling every single service and startup item and that worked also. But in my mind I would like to keep vista 64. It would make sense now that the freezing issue did not happen when dell was logged into me because when you log in the video goes into safe mode.
THINGS I DID TO TROUBLE SHOOT.
I found the chipset driver mcp79 it was for allianware but hey a chipset is a chipset I installed I installed it it did not work.
Uninstalled and reinstalled update to video driver no go.
Then I put the orningal intel storage drivers (as oppose to the nvidiea driver that didn't work.
I also tried to take areao off and put the settings on windows standad for display properites NO go.
(The only thing that worked was when I disabled the video driver, went into safe mode, or disabled every single service and start up item.
Now the fact that it works fine when I copy a disk in roxio makes me think it's a vista 64 problem. or nvidia problem. I am now going to put on vista 32 (giving up 2 gig's of ram) I"ll report back later.
Can this by anyway be a hardware issue with the video card or is it totally software related. -
Hi, i'm new here but i've been reading this forum for a while now.
i just got this as a college laptop. I ordered mine off dell.com with the 25% off.
2.66ghz CPU
9500M NVIDIA GPU
4gb RAM
320gb hard drive
I just received my studio xps 13, and i love it. no problems at all. very fast, mobile, does get hot but every laptop gets hot. got external monitor hooked up + speakers + mouse. wifi is great, overall awesome laptop. small, powerful, great.
i've got some questions:
does the "Alerts" section in dell support center look for drivers for all your hardware?
send me a PM if you are contemplating on buying this laptop, i can give you some advice. i've been researching laptops 24/7 for the last 3 months. -
Well it's me againAnyway I put on vista 32 and all is working no freeze ups and no on. But I almost ran into another problem of which I almost threw this laptop on the floor. the 1515 wireless drivers. They are not sensitive to singnal even if they are close and constantly drop singnal. Well I went on to a forum and got these drivers and they work great
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15297
This is the dell fourm link that connected me to the link on top
http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19260956.aspx
Anyway how do I feel well l finally releived. But I'm still angry that I had to go though all of this crap to get the laptop working. I've been a Dell man since 1995 and I must say there quality is not there anymore. But anyway I got a powerhouse laptop for less than a grand so something good came out of this and I'm sure now I will enjoy it thanks guys -
does anyone else hate all the fingerprints? i own a vinyl cutter and cut some covers out of clear plastic for the really finger print prone areas (large plastic area on the outer lid and both parts of the palm rest left and right side). i had some leftover material from an old job its clear plastic that resists finger prints. i have enough material for a few more covers if anyone interested? let me know if there is any interest and i can post some pics.

I could send you some money if I like the pics you're about to post...

Is this model really this bad?! Oh dear...... I work in a place where we only use Dell and I'm shocked! I'm planning on getting one of these, going to have a look at one today; not to buy, just a look. Will look for some of the issues mentioned here, such as heat, fingerprints, etc.
Really really want one.... look soooo nice! If not one of these, my next thought was a macbook; similar specs, etc. -
I own both the xps m1210 and m1330. I am going to sell the m1210 and debating whether to keep the m1330 or upgrade to the 1340. My warranty for m1330 is about to expire in about 70 days and to be honest, I am scared to keep it when the warranty expires, since I already had the motherboard replaced twice with the gpu problem. Even though I am doing the copper mod, i would hate for it to die when I no longer have warranty. So now i am debating whether to extend my warranty or upgrade to 1340.
I love the metal palm area for the 1330 and have a huge dislike for fingerprints. I really want the backlit keyboard and new components, however you guys make it seem pretty horrible.
So will it be worth it to upgrade? Please advise -
Went and had a look at one a little while ago.... as well as a mackbook....
XPS...
Liked the smallness
Like screen definition (was led version I think, brighter than cath lights)
Didn't like the keyboard....for anyone who had a spectrum, they're shaped a little like that (some people like it, I didn't). Key press is too slack with little bounce back
Didn't like how much the screen went down to the bottom of the laptop base, which left a bigger gap at the top of the screen
Saw the vent and it was partly covered, although it didn't seem that warm, despite it being in a shop swtiched on all day every day.
Mackbook...
Beter keyboard, more bounce back and feels more solid
More space for hands
New trackpad/1 button combo (really liked this all laptops should have it)
Screen could be a bit clearer, but is about the same as the dell, but centraly placed
Not sure what else to note down about them both. Macbook looks better, and I fear that Dell has let themselves down with the XPS.I work in a Dell covered job; just bought some of the E5500 ranger; man they're the business! But the XPS doesn't look no where near as good as these and I think Dell could to more about the styling of the XPS 1340.
Either way... still sort of undecided. Gonna find out about Bootcamp and Mac to see if that will work.... I didn't find the Mac interface particuarly good or bad really either.
Seems like I've been enlightened....
Let me know if anythings different... -
1.If you are going to get this laptop and use it the way it came out of the box for me it's was stable execpt for coping cd's to the hard drive. What happened was it froze. Most people don't do that. I do it because of slipstraming and mounting.
If you want to rid that issue you must put on Vista 32 bit but be aware there are other problems which I worked out. The driver for the 1515 wireless card that dell has on there site is no good you must download the drivers from the manufacture website.
Another supprise that came up was the fact the web cam didn't work. I was on the phone with tech support and he couldn't figure out the problem. I did. It worked on Yahoo and aol but not on there own software that was made by creative. after a lot of research I downloaded somthng called many cams and it worked.
As far as the heat issue with mine I'm fine. When I first borught it was was real hot but since I updated the Bios it's fine now.
Conclusion: This laptop has a lot of software problems and for some I guess some heat problems. I would only recomend this laptop if you are in the industry in troubleshooting computers and your congnative ablilites are better are better than tech support.
I'd look around on the website and read the reviews first before choosing a laptop. i chose this even though it had negative reviews I also wanted a bargain for 899.00 at best buy and I kind of knew there must be fixes. Well after a week It's all fixed and I'm happy. I just would like my 64 bit back for speed but that I"m sure will come with windows 7
My last word Dell should be ashamed of it's self for selling this to the public -
I got my 1340 in yesterday. So far, no problems. I reformatted it this morning and installed all the latest drivers. I don't think the heat is bad at all, the metal piece around the exhaust that goes up to the speaker gets hot but other than that I think the bottom is fairly cool. No stability problems at all. Fingerprints do show up but that's true with all shiny plastics. Seems Dell has fixed the problems.
