I will likely be ordering tonight or by tomorrow the latest as well. The only thing I'm still torn on is the video card. I'm not sure if I should go the 9400 or 9500 route. I don't want to go for the 9400 and later regret it.

How likely is it that I will be able to push a CS rep to up the discount from 7% to 10%?

According to this your are NOT getting a Swedish keyboard (Qwertz). Probably just a typo from Dell, but watch out..

    Unless you don't want to?

Anyone heard of waxing glossy parts of the laptop like cover? Has anyone tried it ? Does it prevent fingerprints a little bit? What do you think about putting it on a palm rest of 1340. I think I'll be going nuts about fingerprints there.

Sounds pretty neat, but I can't really see it being too practical. Besides, I can't imagine working on Solidworks with a touchpad. I'd just get pissed. :D

Aw man. I didn't know that. I always thought they made the computers here in Nashville since we get a 747 from China every day with Dell parts. Apparently they're not parts but computers!! =( This is my third day in boxing and the Dell rep just called me and told me he expects it to ship Monday or Tuesday so I'm not counting on it coming before next week. That sucks.

Yup, just learned this stage takes 3-4 days on average. Mine has been in boxing since Wednesday. You can expect yours to come end of next week probably.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the layouts - would the keyboard be different keys or just different layout? The keys are easy to pull off and swap around, I just tried it on mine.

Don't count on it. Mine has been in "boxing" stage since Monday and yesterday my ESD was changed from 1/29 to 2/5. I ordered on 1/12...

While I've been waiting an extra long time for my order the LED upgrade I paid $125 for is now free...

I just called dell to try and get upgraded shipping for my order to make up for the delay but was told to go pound sand (would have to cancel my order and start a new one).
I'm really tempted to cancel my order and walk away at this point. I told them so on the phone but they didn't care.

Is that with a 64GB or 128GB drive? The model might be different for the newer 128GB drive.
What's the performance of RBX? Better than the 70MB/sec write, 90MB/sec read listed on samsung's web page for their current 128GB MLC drive?

    HI,
This is my first post though I've been reading all your posts. I'm really excited and the hour by hour update you guys take on your purchase kind of adds suspense, lol.
Well, I ordered mine on Jan 27 and it shows "In Production" online. However, when i called on the 800 number, it says mine is in boxing phase. I checked online again and its still In Production.

the inital reviews seem to be pretty promising - just have one gripe now...about fingerprints. Has anyone used transparent skins on laptops?

Can you guys test this feature and describe how it worked. Thanks!

Why worry about forgetting your password? Facial recognition security software lets you log onto your laptop with a simple scan of your face. It can automatically lock your laptop when you step away, and unlock it upon your return.

You have to enrol your biometric features with Vista first, I think.

When logging in to Vista, there's a webcam stream displayed on the login screen and you can simply stand in front of the laptop in view of the webcam, and it'll pattern match your face using facial recognition.

If it's a match, Vista logs in with your profile.

You don't have to use this, you can just type in your password like normal if you want.

I've used facial recognition in the past, and it works alright - However, it doesn't work very well in a dark room

also, a high res lifesize picture of whomever the facial recognition software is set up for can defeat it with ease.

Honestly, just use a password if you need serious security - but lets be honest, what do you have to protect? Likely nothing anyone else cares about.

Morover, if someone has access to your laptop for any extended period of time, they can just pull the hardrive, hook it up to another computer and not boot off of it, and totally defeat vista security - even if its encrypted, its a joke to defeat if you know whats up

    Hi guys,
I haven't hear many people talk about any heat issues. I've ordered for the 2.26 processor fearing higher-end processors may have heat issues. Are there any?

The CPUs all have a standard 25w TDP. So a slower CPU doesn't necessarily guarantee lower power usage or lower heat output.

Yeah it's sad. I was hoping to get it so I could play around with it before next week, but it looks like I won't get it until next week. I have exams too so I won't be able to post much about the computer until after and most people here will already have theirs probably by then!

Do you have to be a Dell preferred customer (basically have a Dell CC) to qualify for the gift card? I placed my order tonight and they wouldn't budge from the 7% discount. When I mentioned the gift card the CS rep claimed that unless I had an account with them it wasn't going to happen.

Can you use the gift card to extend your warranty? That would be the only thing that it's useful for at this point.

In the past, I never got the offers to extend the warranty until a month or so before the initial warranty was up. And, I believe the gift card has some for of expiration, like 60 days or something.

Not that I'm really answering your question, because I don't know.

The GC expired on Jan. 12 or something, so if you ordered then, you got it. Otherwise, you didn't. You would have needed to badger a dell rep to get it.

I just checked my order online and see that they have cancelled my original order placed on the 8th and placed a new one with the same specs, same price, however it is MISSING the $200 gift card that came with the original purchase. New ESD is 2/12!!?? This is absolutely rediculous! Anyone else who ordered from the original link have this problem?

I cant wait to call tomorrow morning and raise some hell!

Well I just called customer care and the rude lady told me that they can not offer me the gift card or any other form of compensation and the only reason for that is because that promo is not available at this time. That is the only answer she would give me for every question I had so naturally i wanted to reach through the phone and strangle her! No answer given as to why they cancelled my orig order! Unbelievable! When I ask for a supervisor she says there isnt one available?
I then called the sales team who told me that if the gift card was on my orig. order, then I will still receive it. He said I have the proof of my original order. Is this correct, or are they just blowing me off for another 6-8 weeks?

Can anyone explain to me who I need to speak to get this taken care of?

You should have an original receipt for your order that they emailed you. On on that email confirming your order, you should have the following line item:

$200 Promo Gift Card-Arrives in 6-8 wks, 90 Day Exp

Forward that on to the sales guy and they'd probably happily give it back to you. Though, I'm not sure why they couldn't just check your original order # to see your original invoice.

    I'll try that in a minute. ^^^^^^^

Okay, for those of you who wanted to know about running games:

    Performance:
I can run Half-Life 2 with everything on high.
I can run Left 4 Dead with everything on high, but I need to turn anti-aliasing off.
For a laugh I tried running GTA IV. It runs, but it's pretty unhappy about it, and I had to take a metphorical trip back to 1998.

This is in Windows 7 with the latest NVIDIA drivers, your mileage may vary.

    Temperature:
My idle temps are about 40C for the CPU, and about 54C for the graphics, on a 20C day.
Seems fairly reasonable for a compact laptop.

I'm not sure what the temps are after playing games for a while, as I only just got monitoring software. I can tell you it doesn't ever seem to overheat (it never underclocked), but the back corner where the screen covers the fan vent pretty quickly gets too hot to touch for more than a few seconds.

When other people get theirs I'd be interested in what their idle temperatures are.

OK, HDTune has been run, thanks drfelip. I don't think HDTune will let me test writing without the drive being blank, so I can't test that.

My read results are a little weird because it's jumping from ~80MB/s to ~150MB/s in different sections, so I'll post a screenshot as well. Something to do with caching maybe? I'm impressed by the access times though.

0 (or close to) latency is normal for SSDs, but I'm impressed by the speeds. Glad to see Dell didn't use OCZ or other low-end disks.

It didn't cost a huge amount more when I got it, then Dell (New Zealand) suddenly increased the price massively a couple of days after I ordered. I don't know whether they made a mistake originally, or they just decided they don't want to sell any more of them. :)

Also I noticed the CPU usage of "-1%." Using the hard drive is powering the CPU! ;)

After speaking with at least 6 different agents from sales and customer service, my problem is finally fixed. They had to cancel the order again and place a new one. I got them to upgrade the video card (even though I have no idea what that does), they are giving me a $150 Gift Card instead of the $200GC I had originally and free overnight shipping for the same price I paid before.

BTW, the $150 Gift Card promo is the new promo Dell is running in February and that is how they were able to give it to me.

So here is my new setup...However, I just realized they are including the 90 watt ac adapter, and not the 65 which it had previously...I guess this is due to the video card?...sucks but I guess we will see how big it really is when it gets here...

That is because I assumed that everyone would have read what our French friend had posted and understand the context behind the post. :) So I was using return policies in the US (which is what you referred to) as a precursor to the correction, which is that the return policy in France is 7 days.

It's important to make these distinctions for obvious reasons.

Has anyone tested how much the studio XPS 13 weighs with the SSD option and the LED screen? I'm willing to bet its a bit lighter than standard hard drive variant.

And wow, lots of glare in those German review videos....ouch....Hope its not that bad IRL...

Also, any issues with the speakers on the 1340 like there on the 1640? is the volume output of both speakers equal?
