I don't know how they treat you out of warranty. Worth a shot since they overnight the adapters and the Michael Dell email group will call you within a day.

    Update:
Had a reply from Dell who gave me the link for the BIOS A14 update, (same as the one I had already downloaded), told to just follow the onscreen instructions, but guess what, same thing happened.
    Really not impressed with this.

Hm.. I am on the Dell chat right now and the rep says that they cannot send me a 130w adapter as it is only for the 1645/1647.

    WOW!
Just brought it back from the dead, using wincris! back to vsn A11.
For some reason I couldn't get it to work before, (maybe because I was using a 4G USB stick), but tried with a 2G and it worked, however it take me a while to realise that when it says the "end" key it really did mean the end key, (as the website was translated from vietnames, I thought they meant the power button LOL)

Updated BIOS, shipped a used 130w power supply, throttle stop and cpu-z show multiplier dropping down to 8 and 6x after a few min of gaming..

Multiplier dropping is normal behavior when the processor is not at 100% load. Most games alone don't put or keep the CPU at full load.

Use prime95 using the short option to ensure the processor is under full load.

A quick update from me, got a call from a Dell rep in reply to the email I sent. They are sending me a 130w power supply. If it fixes the issue I will be able to purchase the extended warranty (which I will). If the adapter does not correct the issue then it is the motherboard or battery and I would have to repair those out of pocket before I can purchase the warranty (which I will not).

Anyway just giving props to Dell for excellent CS for an issue that should be a recall...

I see the normal dropping when not under load, that's fine. It's doing it with prime95 and a game running or just a game running.

Dell is trying hard to avoid this issue. 130w supply and bios did not fix the problem here's what they are saying now... 1640/1645 and 1647 are not gaming machines.

Wow! That really is a canned response lol. That is exactly word for word what they told me.

Funny how Dell marketing seems to think differently on the matter.

So, after contacting Dell about the failed BIOS udate, again, (didn't tell them that I brought it back to life), I received an email from them:
I can take a special permission to send an onsite engineer as a onetime exception to resolve the issue, however the Bios update issue will remain unresolved in that situation. Therefore I will arrange for the system to be collected for repair. Please provide me with the following information in your reply so that we can close the issue at the earliest.
So it seems that this time, (if I send it off to them), they will endeavour to update the BIOS for me?
    Any thoughts?

    Ok, another update.
Getting my laptop ready to send back to Dell, they had said that my hard drive may get reformatted, so not wanting to lose anything, I decided to put in a spare drive that I had and put a basic install of windows on it, no drivers, no quickset, no programs, then ran the BIOS A14 update, in order to brick it.
To my surprise the update worked!
So there must be something in one of the programs or drivers or quickset that is interfering with the update, so I suggest anybody else in the same situation as me to try reformatting and reinstalling windows before updating your BIOS

Just curious. Did you have all of the latest drivers installed when you tried to update your bios? The reason I ask is because I did not have any problems updating the bios but I also had my computer completely updated to the latest versions of all of their drivers and downloadable software.

Also what AV program are you using? That may have something to do with it as well.

treyedean, on the failed attempt, my system had the most up to date drivers, as per the dell site, running McAfee AV, (as it came with the laptop), however I had shut it down prior to updating, but on my last, successful go, I didn't load in any drivers at all.

Practically, I did not see the drop in performance as I did before, but the slow dropping of the multi kind of concerned me. The new system is running the i7-620m with the 130W adapter.

    Thanks for all the help,

    Todd

Your log doesn't look like throttling, it looks like idle, then full load @04/17/10 08:13:57, then back to idle @04/17/10 08:27:51. I didn't see throttling in between.

You might try running whatever tools you are going to use for load testing first (have them create the full load), then launch throttle stop and log it for a few minutes. Close throttle stop then end your load test programs. That way your log will only cover when the system was at full load. If you see any big deviations from 19-20 multiplier you might have throttling.

I disagree peppe1. The log shows this new CPU throttling like a SOB.

The multiplier keeps dropping to nice even values. 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 ,12, 11, 10, 9 and then when the multiplier can't go any lower, it starts using clock modulation to slow things down further internally. This new replacement laptop is not running at the Intel designed speed.

SxualVnilla: A 9 times multiplier combined with 25% clock modulation gets you a CPU that is competitive with a Pentium II 266 MHz CPU. Is that what you paid for? Of course not.

Time to call Dell and tell them that you're not impressed by this dog.

Make sure you are running the latest bios.

The default multiplier for a Core i7-620 is 20.0 times. When both cores are fully loaded there is no reason for it to be any less than this unless Dell is deliberately throttling it. The 20 multiplier is the minimum full load multiplier. With turbo boost it can go higher than this but when loaded it should never go lower.

The C0% starts to drop when clock modulation is being used. This shows that internally the CPU is not running at 100% anymore. It's not able to perform at its full potential when it is being limited like this. The 9 multiplier means that it is running at 45% of the speed it should be working at and 25% clock modulation brings that down to barely 10% of its rated performance. Is it going to take a class action lawsuit before Dell stops shipping defective laptops like this?

Here's a Dell D830 I tested on the weekend. It's able to run Furmark + Prime95 Small FFTs at full speed without any throttling so why can't Dell's new laptops run this same load?

I havent run throttlstop or anything on my new computer, the 1647. I hate to say this but Ive only got throttling when I use these synthetic tests to make it throttle. I havent noticed any slow down but then again I dont game. I think throttling in the XPS will exist to a degree no matter what you do, or what model you get..Its just the nature of the beast..Im happy I got a free upgrade out of it 7 months after owning it...

Im sure if I ran some tests it would throttle too Unclewebb..But at this point what can I do? I already got a replacement worth $800 more than my original build...And Ive been told I cant get a refund..All I can do is be happy that I got a 47 outta a 40..Unless you suggest I sell it? But there is no other laptop out that I really like..

It's very disappointing that Dell continues to sell laptops that severely throttle and run at way less than their rated performance level.

Most throttling only happens when you are stressing both the CPU and GPU at the same time. If a laptop throttles down to 10% of its rated performance during a Prime95+Furmark synthetic test then you can be pretty much guaranteed that during a demanding game, it will also throttle.

tenknics: If you're not a gamer then it is likely that your laptop is able to run at full speed. If you're happy with your laptop that's great but I doubt SxualVnilla is going to be very happy knowing that this new laptop throttles just as badly as his last laptop.

With a 130 watt adapter, I'd be running ThrottleStop full time to help maximize performance and reduce the amount of throttling while gaming.

Our original builds were probably also different. You dont just get a replacement with whatever you want, its based on the performance/parts of your original config. In my case the only "upgrade" i got was 8gigs of ram instead of 4.

Every case is different and unique because of the amount of misinformation the all the different dell reps have. You can talk to two different dells reps about throttling and replacements and they would contradict each other..Only thing I can say is just be happy if you got a replacement that is equivalent (its better, you got an i5) or better than your original purchase. ;)

I'd like to upgrade my wife's 1640 bios to A14 but the comments about bricking the laptop has me worried. Is there a rhyme or reason behind which laptops get bricked and which don't? She doesn't push her laptop to the extreme but I want it to run at it's best.

I can't tell you to not worry, but really, I wouldn't worry. On my original 1640 that I got back in early August, Iv updated the bios 3-4 times. And everytime around the launch of the bios, someone's XPS gets bricked, or a small group at the very most. And everytime I've had the smoothest of bios updates without a hint of something going wrong. This is just the nature of the beast and part of the margin of error/defectives I guess you would say, when it comes to bios updates and electronics. It can happen, but its a very small percentage.

There should be a return label packaged with the replacement. At least thats what dell assums happens. My replacement didn't come with one and my rep assumed it did. I was proactive and let him know and he offered me a choice. I chose the one where he emailed me a UPS shipping label and I just went to the local UPS store, printed it out and shipped it there, its all free. The other option is to arrange for a pickup, when the UPS/FEDEX come to your house and pick it up. I chose the former because I like to do things on my own time, not others.

I didnt care to keep my replacement, tho I have seen others not be as proactive as me (if they didnt get a label) and wait till they are contacted by dell. Some have kept it for weeks until Dell contacted them. I just didnt want to risk further charges because I have a Dell Preferred Account linked to the purchase.

    Hi Guys,

Well, Dell is finally trying to help me out. I am being offered a replacement system whose specs I am attaching here.

    New System Config (Main) -

Dell Studio XPS 1645 Laptop -
-15.6 " Edge to Edge Full High Definition (1080p) Display with TrueLife(TM)
    -Intel(R) Core(TM ) I7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    -4GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
    -ATI Mobility RADEON(R) HD 4670 - 1GB 1
    -Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card
    -500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    -Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth
-9-cell (85WHr) Lithium Ion Primary Battery
-90W AC Adapter (Could this be an issue?)

Rest is standard 1645 configuration. Please let me know if this is OK and (hopefully) would be devoid of the 1640 issues!

My 1640 config is in the signature below...

    Thanks,
    C

This will be an issue if you want to get the most out of your i7. I got the XPS 1645 (near identical specs to the one you listed) a month ago with a 90w adapter, and called to get the 130w adapter. The Dell support person told me that the 130w has become the standard adapter for the laptop, and that my order status showed that I was supposed to receive the 130w adapter. My order status information I received didn't list any adapter on it. Dell shipped me the 130w adapter, and I got it the next day.

My shipping label came through the mail about a week after the replacement arrived. I got the boxes back out the replacements came in and packed the old laptop back in that box, removed or blacked out any old labels, taped it up and put the new fedex label on it. Dropped the box off at a local fedex store and they took care of the rest.

I didn't even get a return receipt with mine when I got it. I had to call back in again to get a return label.

Yeah I thought about that afier I read an artice about someone that got a call from the return collection specialists. I think I might just save them some time and send both my current and replacements ones at hte same time and see what happens. (that's called sarcasm)

Umm...its the same exact config you already have except you have a better CPU..What other input do you need than that? Better cpu = win

    Hi Tenknics,

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Just one thing... Would this configuration be liable to suffer from over-heating and/or CPU throttling? Is there any specific combination / configuration which is a better performer (read less heat/throttling) than the current one DELL is offering as replacement?

I just don't want to go through the same headache all over again.

    Thanks again,

    C

The XPS 1645 throttles a lot less with the most recent bios and an updated 130 watt power supply. The problem can then become heat and you can run into GPU throttling while gaming with the same end results; slow and sluggish performance. For gaming, the XPS 1647 seems like a better choice.

I just got my 1647 yesterday. It replaced my 1640. I have not had much time to really put it to the test but it is much, much cooler so far. My 1640 would get hot just doing normal stuff, web, email and the like. I am much happier with my 1647 so far...

Would anyone be kind enough to summarize what this is about and what the resolution is?

I have not checked in for a while and it's simply not reasonable to read through hundreds of posts to catch up.

It would be nice to have a sticky post for this too.

    Thanks in advance.

    Just got my SXPS today. It's got a 2.66GHz T9550, 6GB DDR3, and the HD4670.

I'm trying to undervolt the CPU with RMClock and IntelBurnTest... and I'm running into some insane temps. IBT makes my CPU hit 87C under load with only 1.1625v.

Has anyone else tried undervolting the T-series Penryn chips? Could save me some time if I had an idea of the lower voltage limit for the full 2.66GHz.

I've followed this thread for quite some time and am happy to say that I have managed to stop throttling by using throttlestop. I've decreased my vid to 1.00v and it works like a charm. I can finally enjoy gaming with no annoying slowdowns in the middle of a battle.

    Thank you unclewebb for throttlestop.

btw, im using a 90w adapter.

Funny thing happened today morning. My friends and I were gaming and there was a power cut. We continued gaming for about half an hour after with no power after which i noticed the status light on the sides of the laptop were blinking in an odd way. Two orange flashes followed by a white flash. Any idea what this means ?

Gaming while using ThrottleStop on battery power might draw current from your battery faster than Dell intended. For this reason, I don't recommend using TS while on battery power.

If you call Dell and complain about throttling issues you might get them to send you out a 130 watt adapter. When you talk to them you need to be persistent and let them know that you know exactly what's going on. They will argue and disagree but keep asking to have the matter escalated to someone higher up that is well aware of Dell's throttling laptop issues. The 130 watt PA-4E doesn't get nearly as hot and is worth upgrading to for that reason alone if you can get one for free. It will also allow your battery to charge up faster when you're using your laptop.

The game became unplayable of course, it isn't the first time I encounter this problem, latest bios, drivers up to date, blah blah blah.

Already called Dell several times :
    - They told me that the problem is known but hasn't been solved yet and that they would get back to me within 3 days with a solution...they didn't.
    - They told me to run a full system diagnosis - which gave nothing
    - A technician connected to my laptop through DellConnect and told me there was no issue and tried to convice me that it was normal, that the 1640 is not meant for gaming and I should have bought an Alienware => LOL
    - They told me that the problem has only be solved on 1645 and 1647. So I asked for a 1647, but they told me it wasn't an option.

Maybe I wasn't pushing it enough because I wasn't 100% sure that the extreme lag I was experiencing was due to throttling (I suspected it but people on another forum told me throttling was very unlikely with only a P8600), but now the log is pretty obvious. And I guess this thread wouldn't be 85 pages long if that problem didn't exist.

Any advice on what to tell them so I can get a replacement ?
I saw that mailing [email protected] has been succesful for some of you ? What did you tell him ?

An effective multiplier of 3.00 combined with chipset clock modulation at 37.5% has your CPU performing at about 10% of its rated speed. If you can't play a game on this laptop then why did Dell charge you extra for an ATI 4670 GPU?

This is a defective product. Dell knows it and you know it and the ThrottleStop log file is evidence that clearly proves it. Now you have to waste your time escalating your complaint and getting Dell to offer you a suitable replacement with similar rated specs to what you paid for without the severe performance throttling that you are presently seeing. An XPS 1647 with a Dual Core at a similar speed would make for an adequate replacement. You've had to put up with your defective XPS 1640 for long enough without a proper fix or any indication that they are even going to bother to fix this. Time for a replacement. Don't take no for an answer.

    Okay. I'm gonna make one last call next monday asking directly for a replacement => 1647 with i5 (can I ask for a i7 620M ? ^^)
If they still wouldn't give me what I ask for, i'll try mailing [email protected]

I called again...it seems I won't be getting anything this way, and still no fix for my issue...they keep asking me to run tests I already ran, or non sense like trying with only one memory module (?!!!?)...sigh

    I'm gonna try [email protected]
I was thinking about sending him the following. I am not a native english speaker so could you tell me if this is appropriate ?

NB : The config is exactly the same as what I do have, except for the processor, I only have a C2D 2.4GHz but I thought I might push it for a i7 for all the time and money I've been wasting by calling them... (if they only give me a non-throttling i5 i'll be fine too). And it's not like if I was asking for a SSD + 8Gb RAM
