2010 XPS Configurations and Delivery Dates Here

Seems like smaller laptops ship faster. I've ordered an Dell Inspiron m101z (for wife) from the right-most column - with dual AMD, max RAM and pink outfit - on 2010-09-20 and got it in my hands on 2010-09-29 whereas EDD originally stated 2010-10-06.

 

The reason mine shipped faster is possibly because I live in NZ.. smaller country = less orders? Dunno.. just a guess.

 

I will let you know when I get mine on or before the 12th of Nov.

I'll give you guys a much more in-depth review tomorrow, just trying to test everything on this machine.

For a brief overview, I really like it. She's a tad chunky, but the build quality is very good, it's solid. I definitely agree with chang-er; good speakers, but if you are picky on screen quality, I recommend passing up on it for now.

As for the screen, I may have something to fix this issue sometimes next week.

 

So the screen isn't that great? What about heat? Don't be afraid to put it through it's paces.

All the other Dells I have bought have only been in production for a day or two.

 

Because of a mistake by Dell I can't even track the order online. The only thing I know is that my laptop went in production yesterday but the EDD is the 9th December. Hopefully it arrives early. I mean one month for production and delivery???!!! I even ordered it 8 days ago.

 

i haven't been able to push it too much other than during the fresh install.. but it doesn't get hot at all.. cause most of the time its on the Intel HD vs the Nvidia 420M... but i bet those who get the quad core probably would feel it get warmer than my experience

And mine is still in production since 22th of October. I dropped them a call this Monday why it takes so long and all they could do is to switch my delivery from 4-7days to 1day (EDD from 18-11-2010 to 15-11-2010).
Anyway there's also a good stuff - it hasn't been canceled by mistake as it was with some guys here, phew.

 

wow could they not tell you what is holding it up?
I remember when I ordered my studio 1749 with 1080p screen that caused loads of deleys to the point where I cancelled the order. but it didnt ever go into production it just sat at the first stage and kept over running EDDs

 

All they could guess (they didn't even know for sure) that as I could have chosen some weird configuration - this will take long to assemble. I said that I changed only display, added backlit kb and bluetooth to base config. Answer was that anyway the parts could be coming from different states(!) so it takes time anyway <_<

 

Hopefully that won't happen to me. Ordered on 1/11 with upgraded screen and still showing as 'work in progress'.

I used to have an Inspiron 8200, and after some bad experience with a Gateway and a HP, decided to go for the XPS 15.

I ordered mine on Oct. 28, and went into production on Nov. 1st....and they will send it by mail on Nov. 19...and delivery date between Dec. 1 -7.
Really long production time, since I only upgraded screen and processor.

I am a bit angry, since my budget was $1.1k, and Dell´s sales representative (over chat) told me before buying that shipping cost included tax. So I upgraded from an i5-460 to a i5-560m. Final cost was $939 + $128 S/H or $1067.

Next week, I was called to confirm my personal and CC data, and I asked them if taxes were really included...which they replied it didn´t. So final cost will come around US $1.2k.

I can still afford it, but quite honestly I wouldn´t recommend again buying at Dell webpage.

 

I'll have to say that having to wait an entire month, potentially longer, from order to delivery has already really put me off buying a Dell again in the future, regardless of how happy I am with the machine when it eventually arrives.

It's not that I wasn't expecting it, I was aware that it'd be slow, but one week in to the long wait, pointlessly checking the order status, I'm wanting the machine now!

It's obvious that they don't give estimated delivery dates until after you order because they know that it'd put off a large percentage of customers...

 

Actually, on Dell.com they do give estimated delivery dates up front.

I think typical wait times for a mature product from Dell is 1 to 2 weeks max, but you have to keep in mind that this is a fresh product launch and that initial demand is going to be quite high and thus wait times are going to be long.

 

Yup, ordered on the 1st and today, 6th, it's still 'work in progress'. Not sure if the 1080p screen is slowing it down.

So has anyone who purchased the 15" XPS had theirs go into shipped status?
Or are we all stuck in "In Production" purgatory?

 

I have an inkling that Dell is overbooked with orders for replacements for faulty SXPS 16s.

, but think about it. XPS 15 is what SXPS 16 users get as a replacement... and the 14 and 17 are not delayed.

 

My XPS 17 just changed to shipped! UPS doesn't recognise the tracking number yet, but I'm guessing it will be here in two or three days (from previous experience).

Are any other 17s being shipped yet?

 

I would love to be a fly on the wall during the stockholder's meeting when the SXPS 16 and its losses are brought up.

 

I'm not so sure about that. The margins on laptops are usually insanely high, and the SXPS 16 was a very popular system. The amount you pay for it and the warranty probably covers four or five full replacements. More than likely, this is the reason why, at least previously, it took a LOT of problems and problems with technician visits before Dell consented to a replacement.

But, I had a visit from a technician, then an unrelated [very small] problem came up... and because of it my motherboard was mistakenly replaced after I explicitly told them NOT TO, and I get offered an XPS 15? Seems too easy. I would have just called the technician back before he mailed the mobo back to them and told him to put it back...

Two visits and then a replacement? That's really weird, even for Dell...

 

Wow, 4-5 replacements out of 1 laptop sold. If that was the case Dell would have the best business model in the world!

I can imagine margins are that high. there is a lot of competition in the IT sector, and I bet if you bought your dell at full price (ie no discount vouchers) I bet it would still be less than a 50% margin

 

Margins on laptops are not that high, at least at resellers. Know a guy at an electronic retailer, and on a $2400 Alienware laptop, the markup is less than $100. Don't know about on Dell's end, but I'm sure its not as much as you would think. Where they make their money is on accessories, and especially on service contracts.
