Well let's say you RMA your laptop. The whole thing is not faulty. Dell will just cycle the known good parts back into service. Wear and tear doesn't mean much when the only wear is on half-cent injection-molded plastic pieces you can pump out by the thousands if you chose. I just can't see them losing much money from even a system as faulty as this-- though as I've said before, the margins on the SXPS16 were probably terrible compared to other laptops.

Though "full replacements" is an exaggeration. I got a bit ahead of myself when I said that. More like, "four or five visits from a technician carrying spare parts"!

And those spare parts are simply the parts that were taken out for replacement on someone elses machine. I have actually received a part that was in my machine a second time as a replacement part. That was hilarious and immediate grounds for a full replacement, which I got without much hassle.

That was so funny. The part was diagnosed as faulty by Dell Tech Support, and therefore replaced. The replacement part was also diagnosed faulty, and got replaced by the original part (which I could recognise as that specific part).

I think most of Dells cost when dealing with parts replacements are Tech Support wages, Shipping the parts around (but probably huge deal with UPS, so costs will be relatively low), and the external tech. As Wages are a fixed cost, I think they don't spend too much on these service calls.

I was pissed when I found out that my motherboard was replaced. My old 5730 overclocked like a CHAMP. This one refuses to budge 5MHz.

But that's not the problem. The problem is that all the ports on one side of the laptop do not work. Including the headphone jacks, which are stuck and won't let the speakers play.

On top of this, my bluetooth light is on. Which is disconcerting, because I don't have bluetooth.

    It also bsods intermittently.

Dell has contracts with tech support companies. They don't pay the technicians personally as far as I know.

Ouch, that sucks, but I think everyone is stuck with the same deal.

I am barely finishing first week of "in Production" status, and I wish they add a little gift for the wait/anger we are going though right now..

    You lucky .......
Mine has been in production for over a week. But at least that means they have 1080p screens in stock, that was my worry, when I ordered a studio 17 with B+RG screen I waited 3 months before deciding to cancel the order

hmm, funny thing is my edd is on 18/11 and date of order was at 1 am, 28/10 (+10.30,adelaide). However, the good thing is yours are already shipped!

ops my bad, i thought you are from australia as well!

well, in my delivery status, i found 'order received', 'work in progress', 'manufacturing build complete', 'ship from factory', 'arrive in australia', 'with local carrier' and 'delivered'. In my opinion, the status 'work in progress' means they dont have the parts and waiting for it to start the manufacturing process!!! or they simply dont care to update the status before shipping from the factory!
[because in shipping details the date shown is 2nd of nov! for the other stuffs that i ordered at the same time were already received and they actually changed the status to delivered after 1 day.]

Yeah work in progress means they are waiting for parts, or are waitingfor a slot in production.

I have moved past work in progress a week ago, for the last week I have been stuck in production. Normally on Dells I order I am only in production for a couple of days.

I wonder if Dell "works" on their products in the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), I guess not. Mine's still on "Work in Progress" since last thursday, I guess it's gonna take a bit longer still as I've seen people here who had it on that status for more than a week, can't wait though!! :D

    It's arrived in cologne:

Dell's system is down so everyone's order status (at least in the UK) will show as 'temporary unavailable'. I called Dell earlier and they weren't even able to access their own systems. Told me to try again tomorrow.

I called the sales associate that placed my order on 10/22 to ask if he could upgrade my shipping to 1 day since it's taking so long... he did and said it should be shipping this week (I'm in the US, waiting for the 15").

My xps15 is a replacement for SXPS and is listed as a system hardware configuration. There is no info on EDD and dell chat is useless. Does this mean it will come quicker than if I ordered normally? Do I get some type of priority?

hunter i am also getting a replacement laptop.. previously had an sxps16 and they are replacing it with a studio xps 17 - my order will be placed tomorrow becuase my previous config had a blu ray writer and they don't offer that on this model so they are offering 2 or 4 gz of ram upgrade in stead.

see previous config in my signature... Dell said they will rush my order and total turn around time is 2-3 weeks ( i think thats actually normal)

Ditto, status changed to shipped today and my XPS 15 is due to be delivered on the 10th. The UPS tracker says it is currently on its way out of Shanghai :)

My colleague's Mac Air had the same, and so has my Dell - I suspect this isnt a real movement, but an electronic check or transaction prior to actual shipping.

On my log it went to 'departure' from Shanghai shortly after this entry.
