Didn't want to open a new thread so am posting here. I am planning on the Dell Studio XPS 16 once the Radeon 4670 starts getting available in India. How much of a performance difference on an average will it make as compared to the 2 year old system in my sig.?

Well, I ordered a similar build a few weeks ago and my order was cancelled due to a miscommunication. I'm actually glad they cancelled the order because my other system only had the ATI 3670. So, I built a new configuration and sent it to them and asked if they could give me free shipping and a free printer since they inconvenienced me by cancelling my last order. They offered the v305 printer, and I said that if they could give me the wireless version than I would buy it. they agreed. I'm so glad they cancelled my other order.

Id say probably 1.5x-2x the performance maybe more, that vid card seems kinda weak. Just a guesstimate though.

Only twice the performance of a Go 7600!!! I was under the impression that the Radeon 4670 is much better than the 8600M GT which itself is atleast 1.5 times the power of the 7600.

    nope. go 7600 scores around 3000 in 3dmark05, 2000 in 3dmark06.
4670 scores about 3x-4x of this, closer to 4x.

Now that is the kind of performance I would gladly accept. 4 times will be a sweet spot. Of course I will check the scores and performance of the card here before placing an order.

OK here is some more truth to the HEAT related issue.

    I personally checked it ( SXPS 1640 - P8600, HD 3670, 3200 @ 7200, 4Gb DDr3, 5100Wlan, 768p screen, 6cell battery)

I went to the dealer (CROMA - JUHU, MUMBAI, INDIA).

I multi-tasked PowerDVD, Windows Media player 11, Nero show time, Crappy McAfee (thorough scanning), VLC player, Opened Word, Excel, Two instances of IE each running 4 tabs... ( each playing a separate video file.. )

I said to the representative over there that I heard a lot about heating issues with this laptop and I need to make a check..

    he said, " sure sir"

    And waited for 30 - 40 mins.

I was doubtful if he will allow me for such a long time..but he did..Good work dell..

In between he said. ' Sir this Laptop is running right since 10.30 in the morning till this time (7.35pm) and will be On till 9.30 pm, it certainly gets warmer than other(Inspiron 14, Studio 15, 17 etc) laptops over here, but its not that hot'

After about each 10 mins I kept touching the bottom of laptop.

    1st 10 min - nothing felt.

    2nd - a bit warmer.

    3rd - a bit more..

    4th - same.. like 3rd.

I wanted to wait for another couple of mins.. but I was able to see a bit "worried angry" face on the man who was entertaining me with his knowledge about studio XPS 16.

At the end I said, " Its not that much heat, for what it is hyped"

The person said, " exactly sir, it is just false rumor which is buzzing around.. so what would you like to get in your specs? " ( wow somehow he thought I would buy one :) )

I replied, " I'm sorry sir, but I have already booked mine from Dell US, as I'll be going for my higher studies there... (his reaction was like --'Ohh') "

and by the way when would India see 4670? "

(Seems surprised at first) he said, " usually, dell being the American company, it launch their product first over there.. even dell India got Studio XPS about 4 - 5 months after it was launched in US.. hopefully we will see it around in 2 months or so"

    I replied, " Thanks"

he replied, " You are welcome and Thank you for choosing Dell "

( i felt good...Dell really work after its customer service..didnt expected that in India . but its good )

Talk to you guys in a bit.

I got the laptop! It's a lot smaller than I remember. Oh and the Dell Touchpad drivers are screwed up. I can't click on the trackpad so in order for it to work, I had to get rid of the Dell software..go figure. I've got some photos coming soon as well as benchmarks.

Sure though my camera is a fairly old one and only takes 640x480 video. I'll see what does a better job, the digital camera or iPhone video recorder and use the best source. Benchmarks and videos probably won't come until at least 5 hours from now. I still have to finish downloading Windows RC7 and installing it. Then all the other software associated with it.

Wow I wasn't even aware this tool existed! I will overclock both GPU's to their maximum and report back with performance and temp comparisons tonight. BTW the DV7 runs cooler because it has a bigger AND thicker chasis compared to the SXPS 16 so I predict the DV7 may actually end up clocking higher. That would be pretty funny if this $870 laptop outruns my new $1600 one..actually it would make me a bit upset lol.

what?? are u sure? i thought i must have a job/university which has this option, and it just turned out that my employer doesn't have it, so apparently i'm sucking because of this, so i can't find a really appropriate offer.. so how does this work?
i noticed that i can access the page without a member id, but i was pretty sure, that if u want to order, u have to prove that u can participate..

Nope. Dell has never verified anything.

Again, the EPP section is a marketing strategy by Dell. That's it.

It is a way for Dell to advertise HEAVILY on company breakroom message boards throughout the country. The member program code is a way for Dell to track which company is advertising more than others.

I have even asked my EPP rep if anyone can order and they told me the same I am telling you.

The university section is the same as EPP (same website and 7% discount). However, they do verify with university email adresses.

It means they are having technical difficulties. I installed Windows 7 on the SXPS 16 and got all the drivers squared out. I'm backing up about 200 gigs of stuff from the HP to the external so I can start installing games, applications and what not to the SXPS 16. I love fresh Windows installs though, Win 7 boots in less than 30 seconds. Sorry no youtube videos tonight, maybe tomorrow once everything is setup.

If you are from Mumbai, head towards any CROMA outlet. Dell representatives are there. Place your order and yes "Bargain" . No I'm not kidding.

Ask for any discount. Free upgrades. Accessories etc

My friend wound up having Rs. 2000($40) + Dell travel mouse, from them.

    All the best.

Joker, this waiting thing sucks.. Make it fast..

Wow, nowadays my patience level has reduced. So many things to wait on.

So far it runs about the same as my previous SXPs 16 did. The southbridge makes the front of the laptop very warm but I wouldn't characterize it as hot. The true test will come tomorrow when I install games and benchmarks on it and see how it does.

Another thing possible is, I remember my friend quoting that the current Dell India offer are available till 13th July. After which new schemes will come.

But thing is only SXPS 16 customization is not processed. \m/

    You bet it.

I can totally understand the situation. "Beauty and Geek" difficult to go hand in hand

Saddest part is, I'm leaving in 3 -4 hours for a long journey drive out and wont be here till next 3 days atleast. :(

Joker, please atleast a pic of GPUZ of your SXPS1640.

Oh by the way the HP DV7's 4650 does NOT reach the 4670 clocks for me. It maxes out at 680/720 right now, I MIGHT be able to squeeze a bit more but again, the memory doesn't quite reach what the 4670 does although the core exceeds the 4670 specification. I'll push the SXPS's 4670 a bit tomorrow and see how far it goes.

Edit: Backup is complete! I'm going to start installing stuff on the SXPS 16 now.

Kool Thanks Joker... :( Though most of the things that I wanted to see are "Unknown" . Boy-o-Boy I'm so excited to see that 25.6 GB/s of Bandwidth.

    Notebookcheck.net for HD 4670

5 watt more consumption.. Will be exciting to see the effect on battery life
