Mine also gets considerably warm. I also do have the 7200rpm drive. I have not tried to play any games on it yet though.

 

Yea...it bothered me enough last night that I just stopped playing. I noticed I would take my palms off every few minutes and put them against myself to cool them down. I might just be picky when it comes to it, but eh. Not too thrilled. Might be a deal breaker for me. The only thing holding me from returning it is the screen....it is beautiful!!

Plus mine was clearly rushed when put together. I have a bump on the palm rest where it appears a screw was put in too far. One of the antenna's going to my broadband card is pinched and the wire is exposed and it looks like they took a grinder to the area near where they route the antennas....maybe the bottom did not fit right haha.

Or just use and wireless mouse, that's what I always do, hate those track pads with a passion, so much faster and easier with the bluetooth mouse lol

 

I use a wireless mouse. It sucks when typing or using the keyboard haha.

 

I am using a wireless mouse too. However, when I type now, my palms are not lying on the palm rest anymore. At least, I try to not to do that.

Well maybe u can look into getting one of those laptop stands where it raises it so that you can type better and wont always be resting your hands on the keyboard

All this talk about warm palmrests while surfing the web (etc) is a bummer for me. Ive been spoiled with my current laptop (VAIO TZ) in terms of quietness, no heat, ho vibrations, etc... BUT, i definitely need a more powerful system and more screen real estate.. ughh.

 

I figured I'd ask the experts here. Lookin at either an XPS M1530 or the Studio XPS 16 (1640). The lappy'll serve a dual-purpose entertainment/work machine. I pretty much only do World of Warcraft on it, gaming-wise. Work-wise I do a lot of coding/programming (in the form of Visual Studio) but I also need a machine that'll be able to handle multiple virtual machines (either MS Virtual Server or VMWare Workstaion) running. Not really one to watch movies on the laptop.

So, that being said, I'd love input on what machine. Below find the specs for the M1530 and the Studio XPS 1640. I've been leaning torwards the 16 because of the larger FSB with the matching DD3 RAM, but again, looking for opinions here.

I'm in a similar situation as you. I don't do a ton of gaming on my lappy, but I need some horsepower for virtual machines and router simulators. I just ordered a 1640. The DDR3 probably isn't going to make a noticeable performance difference. I picked the 1640 for style and the rgb led.

Hearing about the hot palm rests and knowing that I will be typing a lot on it for command line configuration...I hope I don't regret it.

 

ok i have the xps m1330 and i like the look of the new xps studio 13 is it worth buying. Will my xps m1330 battery work with the studio xps 13 pleasae advise

 

Ack... that doesn't sound good. If you can't leave your hands on the palm rest then mine will be going back. The palm rest on my 1720 never gets warm.

If you have cosmetic issues perhaps you have other problems that you can't see? It sounds like it wasn't put together right. If I were you I would either return this one or ask them to replace it with another.

 

guys.. but it sims that the hottest caracteristic of this note.. isn't important.. BUT ARE WE INSANE???

i'm waiting for the 1640 from august.. when the first picture come out.. well.. NOW.. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

Not only for the insane decision of dell to use a older 36xx ati video card.. but for those problem!! a note that you can't use because is hottest.. WHAT KIND OF NOTEBOOK IS?? if i need to use any external keyboard or mouse.. i got a desktop pc.. the laptop is made to use it wherever you want.. over the legs, on the bed, over the wc in the morning.. (lol)

How can use it if it's so hot?? and.. i try to think what's going on when summer come....

This and the warm palm rests might be a deal breaker for me. I can't stand Dell's huge power brick. I thought they moved away from it when I saw my friend's 1330 power adapter. I wonder if the palm rests will be hot with an SSD drive.

In other news, the wireless printer that came with my comp purchase for $25 just shipped last night and supposedly will be delivered today. It was next day air but it came from Nashville where I live so who knows. I didn't know FedEx delivers on Saturday. Craigslist, here I come!

 

The adapter that came with mine is not that big. I have used a XPS m1530 and a Studio 1537 before, and with the XPS, I had a "much bigger" power adapter than the Studio and Studio XPS adapters. This adapter is the same as the the one that comes with the Studio 1537. I am not too sure about the 1535.

 

It's my understanding that Dell has 3 power adapters: 65W (which is pretty easy to carry around), 90W (which is the one with the rope around the wires that's been in use for the past few years), and 135W (which looks huge and mimics the Xbox 360 one). Maybe I'm wrong and they scaled down their 90W supply significantly, but it looked the same from your picture. Do you think you can take a picture of just the adapter to get a sense of how big it is? That would be very helpful for those with the 1340 who move the computer around a lot. Thanks!!

I think you will find that both machines are going to do a great job gaming.
The 1530 is a good gaming machine. And, the 1640 would suffice as the same.

It depends on what you want in your spec's..adding to or deleting from what you listed above.

Also, pricing right now..you are going to get an awesome deal on the 1530! The 1640 is new, so if you can get a good Dell Rep on the phone ~ you may be able to work out a semi decent deal for yourself!

Been reading on here for the longest time...took a chance and ordered my 1340 the night it was released, and it still hasn't shipped! Looks like I'll have it by the end of this week..cant wait. I am wondering if it is my particular config that is slowing it down...

I'm wondering 2 things... It says I will be getting the 65W supply with my 1340.

a) Why are some people getting the 90W with this machine? Other than the 9500 (I chose to go with the 9400) GPU, nothing is different. The extra 9200 wouldn't draw that much power, would it?

b) Is there an after-market 65W supply that will work with this machine?

Has anyone received their 1340 yet??? I'm surprised there hasn't been any unboxing videos posted on youtube yet for either the 1340 or the 1640.

 

GAH Fedex moved my comp from Reno to Sacramento!!!!! Thats the wrong direction i used to get really fast service when they went straight from Reno to Phoenix (where i am). Now i am sure to not get it until Wed and i will be out of town on business....... amazingly just south of Sacramento.

This is like a keystone cop movie for those of us that remember them.

What was your ESD? If you check with the Dell Rep, they may be able to advise you of the exact status of where your lappy is in production.

Remember, the online order status ~ will usually differ from automated dial. And, if you contact the Dell Rep for order update, make sure to get a Case Number emailed to you with their contact information

Why do I get a feeling that Dell is profiling me and keeping my order 'in boxing' for the last 4 days!!!!! I wonder if it's anything to do with the base 720p screen that I ordered ;-).

LOOOOOL. That was a good one. You forgot to mention that the hard drive is also there in the power adaptor, how could you forget that very well known fact? LOOOOOL. The most stupid thing I have ever heard...

 

Mine was that way too. I noticed that the ones that shipped first were out hitting Memphis first in the shipping line where as mine that had 4 days in boxing and was ordered before many of those but mine hit Reno first so you may be in that production facility. My theory about the regular screen which i ordered did not pan out as others who ordered that had theirs shipped before me too so the manufacture point i think is why some are later than others

For those that have theirs does the glossy surface look like it will take a decal ok?

I'm thinking that it should as long as i find a good heat resistant 3m material. They have decal material that goes on semi trucks that should work ....might need some that is reflective to really pop near the trackpad

 

For those of you who have recieved your new Studio Xps', did you recieve it before the estimated ship date? Because mine is February 22, and I can't believe it would take a month, I don't think I'll be able to wait that long!

 

Aww, come on guys, performance mode doesn't even turn off when you unplug the AC adaptor if you're using it - that's not going to work! Maybe I should have added a few , I didn't mean to really fool anyone.

Anyway, it's good that orders are rolling out now. Good to see some comments from real users.

 

My xps 13 is supposed to ship Feb 20. I've been in production since the 19th. This is way to long to build a laptop..

I really really hope they overestimated the esd, and maybe i'll get it in the next week

Yeah, I'm fairly lazy, so the less Syllables and letters... the better.

 

I just ordered mine with a 9400m G + 9200M GS and it is coming with the 90w. The 9200M GS uses 13w on its own, so that is probably the largest difference.

The Dell rep I spoke to gave me a total of $325 off of list (including the $125 off that is advertised on the website). I was going to use the 10% EPP discount but she offered me this instead and so I came out a bit ahead ($40). Total cost was $1444 before tax for a SXPS 1340 with P9500 CPU, 4GB DDR3, 9500m GPU, 320GB HDD, Vista Ultimate, Bluetooth, and WLED screen.

 

I do a lot of network traffic and graphics simulations as well. The DDR3 was a deciding factor for me. The GPU was a disappointment but I can learn to live with it. The heat will be a bonus in the winter

 

Was thinking about skinning the Palm Rest of the SXPS to keep the fingerprints down and help protect against discoloration from use.

But now I don't Know if it would be a good idea with the possible Heat issue on the Palm Rest.

Has anyone here Skinned their Palm Rest on a "Hot" comp? If so were there any issues?

 

Thats what i was wondering i know that fleet graphic 3m material is good to 175 degrees and cycled heating either their 580 or 680 series but i do not know the heat ability of the "skin" market on the hot areas like the palm rests.

 

I imagine under volting would knock of a few degrees... but that shouldn't be required on a new computer.

I'm planning to use my XPS16 for frying eggs and possibly replace my "George Foreman" grill simply cos of smaller size and more heat capacity on the XPS .
