i am a little confused. The latest bios for the i7+5730 XPS16 is A12. Why is the modded bios based on A09?

    Thx

It is not. It is based on the A12 system BIOS, but it includes the 4670 video BIOS from A09, as it works better for 4670 users than the A12 video BIOS does (higher thermal limit). For the 5730, everything is A12.

So, all of the ones listed on the 1st post (copied below) are applicable to a 1645 with 5730?

    Mild overclock:
    1645_A12_unlocked_5730_725_900-4670_750_900_A09.zip

    Custom overclocks:

    1645_A12_unlocked_4670_a09_780_940.zip

uhh, i flashed the "A-10 1647 mild clock" perfectly, but it still has the gpu 84c throttle limit. can you use the a-07 bios with the same mild clocks cuz i know that that bios doesn't have a gpu throttle limit.

also, does the bios menu allow you to change the gpu temp limit or disable it?

I hadn't had anybody complain yet of GPU throttling with the 1647. If you're experiencing problems with a 4670, I can use the A07 vBIOS (the same as the 1645 A09) instead. That only applies to the 4670 though. Also, it does still have a limit, it was just raised to 95C instead of 84C.

I have yet to make any progress, and I have a lot going on this week so I'm short on time to play around with it. I might have to wait until a newer version of NiBiTor comes out that recognizes the BIOS. I'll check back in a week and let you know, but don't expect much before then, sorry. I just wanted to let you know in case you're still waiting.

    Hey Seeker,

I've been following this thread for a while now, thought i'd tell you that I really loved the way the whole thing was explained, made over-clocking reaallly easy!
    Thanks alot for that.

Right now i'm running Ocd at the Mild clocks, and was wondering if you could make one similar to yours, maybe 800/1000 with all the intermediate steps.

My temps never exceed 85C, I dono why, I was expecting them to soar waay above that, but guess it's a good thing :)

Also, I was wondering what kind of a performance boost does the overclock actually deliver in games?
personally I didn't noticed much difference in my games with the mild over-clock. Do you guys even over-clock for gaming? or just for the thrill?
I'd like to see my games run faster, thats all :)

Oh great, i'm new to the forum, and expected that info thing to come attached..
    well anyway I have a 5730.
So please try to make the Bios :)

    Thanks

    I've a few issues with 800/900mhz bios in cod4, only in cod4....
BC2, NFSHP, L4D2, LoL and black ops runs fine, but I've black screen when playing cod4 (after a few hours..)

Can you seeker made another bios for me? Like this...

    100 250 0.9
    100 250 0.9
    100 250 0.9
    100 250 0.9
    100 250 0.9
    100 250 0.9
    750 900 1.2

    Thank you very much :)

Okay I seriously do not know whats wrong. I have uninstalled CCC and ATI drivers numerous times and when I reinstall them I still cant launch CCC! I used driver sweeper and it still didnt work! I cant access my CCC but I can see from my power plan that Poweplay is on maximize performance. My GFX card for some reason does not like to run at the max clock sometimes and i get terrible FPS in games. Once i force it to run at 700-750/1000, my performance is great.

They will all work, but only the first one is overclocked for the 5730 (725/900). If you want other clocks, let me know.

    Here you go: 1647_A10_unlocked_4670_A07_750_900.zip

It should boost your FPS while gaming, but the mild OC is just that, mild. It should boost your FPS by around 10% or so, or say from 30 to 33 FPS, but results will vary by game. OCing shouldn't affect your temps too much, unless you overvolt, as long as you got a good chip and your heatsink/fan/paste was installed correctly, but it's different for everybody. If you want custom clocks, I need to know if you have a 1645 or 1647.

    I have a 1645 with a 5730.
A overclock similar to yours would be nice.
Im new to all this, so you can pick the right volatage (1.2v max i guess?)
And please include all the intermediate voltage steps so that
Catalyst can do it's thing. :)
Also, you mean the mild Oc should boost my fps by 3 or will a high oc do that?

I'll let you know if I see a difference with the new Oc once you upload it :)

I have yet to do any overvolting for anyone. The 5730 standard max is 1.1. I can give you 1.2, but I can't promise you how it would work. It should allow you to use higher clocks, but you'd have to make sure that your temps don't go too high.

When I was talking a 10% increase, I was talking the mild OC. The OC I use should give you around a 20% increase, depending on the application.

Have you done any testing?? I assume not based on your request. I'd hesitate to give you an OC this high if you haven't used software like AMD GPU Clock Tool to do testing beforehand.

What kind of testing do you mean?
I did Furmark bench test and tests for endurance.. temps don't exceed 84C
And even monitored the temp during long periods of gaming.
The AMD GPU Clock tool doesn't run on my system, it just says that the card isn't compatible (if i remember correctly).
you can leave the voltage at 1.1 if you think it's unsafe.
I'm just looking for a clock in the 800/1000 range.
And I think I could test the temps with a 1.2v, but don't wanna fry anything in the laptop lol.

I think there's a gpu throttle temp..i just realized..just ran a burn in test again to make sure ...and after about 5 mins of steady 84C, the temp (and frame rate 7 -> 3) dropped to 76, and after a few seconds climbed back up to 84C again..a few minutes later it happened again.
the temp graph looked like a wave rising to 84C for a few minutes and dropping to 76, then steadily rising again (repeating over and over!).

the benchmark tests on the other hand were relatively stable, though crappy.

    is that normal?

that is normal gpu throttling, however you can lock it in place to stop throttling using something like rivertuner or AMDgpu clocktool. But then this will most likely cause cpu throttling, which can be stpped using throttlestop

That's normal? My friend's Asus (ati 5870) goes to 94C lol
And for some reason, neither Riva tuner nor the amd clock tool work with my laptop. maybe I'll try again.
The Bios can't control Gpu throttling? Because I think there's a cpu throttle temp setting in the bios.

Well its normal gpu throttling for a sxps.

It would be wonderful if it didn't throttle at all.

Use rivatuner version 2.24c, and when installing click the check for updates thingy, worked for me as i had the same problem.

Oh you have to change the RiverTuner.cfg file in the rivertuner directory.

Add 9488h to the list where it says RV730 under [Gpu 1002]

Did what you said. But it still wont allow me to customize anything specific to the card. only monitor settings.
um..There's no point over-clocking any further if I can't stop the throttling right?

i'll just wait to see what Seeker has to say.

    Thanks :)

Okay so I figure you have a 4570 or something ?
I have a 5730, and my Gpu Id is different. I think I can get this to work.
But I guess I need to educate myself a bit more, because what if I over clock from riva tuner? Will it lock the gpu in
the new clocks constantly? also, if I disable throttling..will that be permanent (as long as riva tuner runs in the background)?

Oh whoops, no i had a 4670. Sorry i thought you had the same.
Um yea im not too sure how to do it for a 5730

EDIT: Apparantly this works for HD5730M
Download AMD GPU Clock Tool v0.9.26.0 For HD 5870 | techPowerUp

Or even better i think, instead of adding 9488h to RV730 in the rivatuner cfg file.
Add whatever it says where it says 1002-9488 (xxxx-yyyy) in your gpu-z

    4670sgupz.PNG

    (plus an h) to RV770

ie change the RiverTuner.cfg file in the rivertuner directory.

Add xxxxh to the list where it says RV770 under [Gpu yyyy]

EDIT: i think its still GPU 1002 but instead of 9488h in RV730, add 68C0 to RV770

just had to add 68C0h in the RV730 line.
    worked :)

okay now..um..can you tell me how to stop it from throttling ?

Just change the clocks a little bit in rivertuner.
open low-level system tweaks, and tick enable low-level hardware overclocking.
Move the scales across a lil bit (~10) and click accept/apply

but will that lock the gpu in MAX clocks permanently?
It'll kill my battery right? If i disconnect the charger obviously.
can I use this to check the stability of other clocks?

Yes for as long as you have rivertuner running, or till you reset the stock clocks. Yep you can slowly increase the clocks till you start getting artifacts in something like furmark

okay well for any clocks close to 800core and 1000mem the system is unstable.
No artifacts or such, but it just hangs and the screen goes blank. something like 780 and 950 seems stable enough. But I hope seeker can somehow disable the gpu throttling, as I don't wanna keep the card at max clocks at all times.

Okay I think I've done some testing...
So far 790 core and 960 mem was the highest stable furmark configuration.
I think this should be high enough, even the temp reached 90C (using rivatuner as suggested by Jkleiss)

So I was wondering if you could make one with max 790/960 (1.1v)? plus all the intermediate steps.
also if you could somehow stop the gpu from throttling at 84C, that'll be great.

Thanks again seeker, learnt alot from trying to get my games to work faster :p

seeker, your mild overclock works nicely. My 1645 with 5730 goes up to 64 degrees celsius under furmark so it seems there's headroom and I have not done the thermal paste mod yet. What do you suggest I try next? What's the next slightly less mild OC?

Remember to check under OCCT also even just for few mins. Not saying your cards are as bad as mine, but when Furmark was still fine OCCT was kicking 100s of errors.

I don't know if that has any impact.. Furmark/OCCT would be much heavier than games IMO so you might not see issues while gaming.

You're welcome. Thanks is given by clicking on the button that looks like old legal scales located in the bottom left of each post.

No problem. 90C is on the high side, but isn't dangerous, and you can probably get your temps down a bit by doing some of the things recommended in this thread, like removing the useless dust filter, or changing out the thermal paste.

For final testing, like error-id10t mentioned, use OCCT. It's error detection function is much better than using FurMark or 3DMark. Start at 790/960 and see if it gives you any errors. If you go 10min or so without any you are good. If you get some, start slowly turning down your memory clocks until you stop getting errors.

Unlike the 4670, there is no Dell vBIOS for the 5730 that has a thermal limit higher than 84C, and honestly, a 5730 (unlike the hotter 4670) shouldn't get that high. Like I mentioned above, try out some things to lower temps. If that doesn't work, I'll have to figure out how to manually change the thermal limit on the 5730. I could do it by comparing the 4670 A09 and A12 vBIOSes, and seeing what they changed, then applying the same to the 5730 BIOS. However, this will require time for testing, and I don't have any this week. I'll make you one with 790/960 for now, and then if you have OCCT errors, or can't get you temps under control, I'll revisit you sometime next weekend.

There really is no "next slightly less mild OC", as each chip is different. I'd suggest following some of the links in the first post, and reading the discussion that dhawansagar and JKleiss have had over the last few pages. Then download an overclocking tool like AMD GPU Clock Tool (works for me) or RivaTuner, and some stress testing programs, like OCCT, FurMark, Prime95, and 3DMark**, and get to testing. When you figure out what clocks you want, let me know.

    Thanks,
I just did the OCCT test, and after 8 mins, my cpu temps hit 93 or something, and it gave a error "cpu too hot"
I'll flash the bois and re check.

Make sure you're testing the GPU, not the CPU. The CPU will get too hot, but that's a known problem with the 1645, though it can be mitigated by some of the options I mentioned above.

Select the 3rd option, OCCT:GPU, and check the block for 'error checking'.

yeah you were right, I was testing the CPU.
Anyway, I flashed the BIOS, did a furmark burn in, the GPU did the usual throttling at 84C.
Then I did the OCCT check for the CPU again, and this time temps reached 84 only.
And finally I did the GPU OCCT, it ran perfectly for 15mins, with no errors and temps around 77C

So guess this works perfectly :)
    Thank you ! :D

The same phoenix BIOS tool will pack/unpack the XPS15 BIOS just as well as the 1645 one. However, the Nvidia vBIOS editing tool, NiBiTor, doesn't seem to want to recognize the vBIOS of the XPS14 (I haven't tried the 15 yet). I don't know if we might need to wait for a new version of NiBiTor, or if you'll have to mod the Nvidia BIOS manually (which I don't know how to do).

seeker, i installed the 790/960 A12 on my 5730 and it works fine.
Furmark brings it up to 72 degrees celsius though.
I will do the thermal paste mod tonight. I wonder if it makes sense to push it to 800/1000. Do you have a file with that?

    72C ? That's IT?
Well my card almost always reaches 80s when gaming and Always hits throttle temp (84) with furmark. I think it's a bit high, but maybe not high enough for me to do the thermal paste mod.
Also, what kind of scores are you getting with the furmark 720p bench?
I was getting something really low, like 680 or something, and I have a feeling that it's too low for the card.

Okay well a few mins after I wrote that, I played the Crysis 2 demo..and about 8mins into the game it started throttlign the gpu. :\
    annoying..was at 720p at gamer(lowest) @40fps and it just dropped to 22..
I'm not sure how much of a difference the removal of the dust filter and thermal paste will actually make though.

Today I received my Dell XPS 16 with the i7-720 processor.
I was completely disappointed about the constant fan noise.
It even blows when there's nothing turned on, or only when I"m browsing one webpage.
My previous laptop only makes this noise when doing a reboot and the bios is testing the fans, but this notebook is making noise all the time...
After searching for many hours I found this thread.
So if I understand correctly I can "safely" upgrade the bios with the "mod version" and configure the bios that the fan may only start when it enters a certain temperature... right?

If yes, what would be a good temperature setting?
And since I have 3 years warranty, will this give me any problems with Dell if they find out?

    Thank you,
    Dennis

Just an FYI that at least for me, the Port Multiplier option in the BIOS does not work. I cannot use a dual external hard disk dock and view both hard disks simultaneously over eSATA on the 1645. (on my desktop, it works fine).

using the Intel RST, i determined that the eSATA port is Port 5 (exactly as seeker_moc said). so going into the BIOS, i confirmed Port 5 is enabled and that all the other sub-options are also enabled. going back into Windows 7, I plugged in the hard drive dock with USB and saw both my external 2.5" 250GB and my new 3.5" 1TB drive. safely ejected both drives, then powered down the dock. unplugged USB, plugged in eSATA, Windows 7 only sees the hard disk in slot 0 of my dock.

I did the thermal paste and it hit 68 degrees with Furmark 720p. RIght afterwards though I got screen corruption. I had to reboot twice. I went back to the mild overclock bios for now. I am not sure if the corruption was because of the higher overclock or because of my opening up the lappy and messing around with the thermal paste.

Firstly, I have to apologize for unlocking unsupported options. I thought it should not visible if the chipset/hardware doesn't support the feature. According to wiki website (look in the " Intel PCH x5x, xx5x, 34x0 family" column):-
Too bad though. I was excited with the Port Multiplier options too. It turned out our chipset doesn't support it.

EDID: The accurate answer is PM55 & HM55 chipset doesn't support Port Multiplier.
