Dell Dropping XPS?

Story in the Wall Street Journal (Requires Subscription), was relayed on Engadget about Dell dropping the XPS line. The article supposedly only specifically comments on desktops, but it is unsure what will happen the the XPS laptops. Thoughts, comments, concerns?


Also, if anyone has a subscription to the WSJ and could give us anymore information that was not posted in the Engadget article, it would be greatly appreciated.

 

XPS laptops aren't going anywhere. All previous moves from Dell (removing dedicated video options from the Inspiron line) indicate a push towards XPS machines, not away from.

 

not true at all, xps is dell's top selling line. Don't believe in this stuff, rumors are bs

Look just how rumors and detractors try to find how to crash DELL's XPS line success and popularity. Wait and until you see their next move after this success story..

 

Probably that's one section earning them a lot of cash.

 

And killing their AW sales

Though its an understandable concern, I think this is a desktop move only.

 

The XPS desktop line might be plausible, but definitely not the XPS laptop line. I don't think either of them are going anyhow.

 

If they were to drop it, they would have done it a few months after the aquisition of alienware. XPS Laptops are not going anywhere.

 

This statement is taken from the article in todays online edition of the WSJ and will be in tomorrow's paper...

"Next month, Dell will begin phasing out four gaming systems in its XPS line of PCs, leaving the Alienware line that it acquired in 2006 as its sole offering to big-spending gamers... Mr. Lewis [recently named head of Dell's gaming-PC division] says getting the savings "took some time" after the acquisition. People familiar with the situation say it took Dell longer than expected to combine the two -- and Dell's XPS line ate into Alienware sales."

In a nutshell, the article says Dell will discontinue the XPS gaming systems as they turned out to be unproductive competition for there Alienware division.

 

I was about to start a new topic, asking what the next features Dell will make available to the Xps line or what ever they call it. I'm looking for a 15" with a video card(s) better than the 8600GT that is available now. Looking to buy in Sept/08, so what video card options are coming? So will it be called a 1530?

 

Computers are crazy business. I need a college laptop and I can already imagine me holding out till October to get one. Of course this story is for the desktops but it shows that theres some movement going on at Dell.

 

I think the only reason why the XPS Desktops aren't selling is because they're "Xtremely" overpriced. Solution: Lower the price tag.

Well seeing that the upcoming inspiron lineup from dell has some resemblance to the xps laptops they currently have, I believe they will be dropping the xps laptop too with the desktops

 

If you catch an XPS desktop deal you can get a ton for very little. There were a few deals involving 24 inch monitors and Q6600s for around $600 which is hard to beat. However, it is kind of silly to compete against your own products.

I still don't see the XPS laptops leaving. They aren't hardcore gaming machines so they don't compete against the Alienware series.

 

The people who are saying this isnt going to happen obviously didnt read the Wall Street Journal article. This is not some random blog giving off rumors, its the friggin' Wall Street Journal.

Dell is getting rid of 4 machines, NOT THE ENTIRE XPS LINE, to make room for Alienware machines to take their place

 

I guess it is time for YPS, XQS, or maybe XPT models anyway.

 

Can't beat XPS. What other good three letter letters can you come up with that could succeed XPS? Its pretty hard. XPS just has that professional feel to it.

I'm sure if the Alienwares' have got the same transferable & awesome Complete Care warranty as Dell's XPSs', they would have sold more Alienwares than they did...

 

I don't see that happening. Desktops maybe...not laptops.

 

Well, the article says Dell will drop 4 of the XPS machines, which works out to all three of the gaming desktops and the m1730. Makes sense, since the XPS m1330, m1530 and XPS One won't compete with the Alienware gaming rigs.

 

That and the XPS's will probably be refreshed this summer, if not by the end of this year. Its tough competition out there in the laptop world.

 

As long as AW starts offering an employee discount and the same warranty as its "mother company" DELL, I don't care what they call it. It will still be an XPS underneath right?

 

who would even care about the xps desktops, their overpriced, thier badly built, they even have a proprietary power supply- meaning if it breaks after warranty your pretty much screwed.

It's also unclear what will happen to is XPS line of laptops, since those are big sellers as well, but we'll all have to wait patiently for the bomb to drop before knowing for sure what Dell's cutting and what they're not.

Not end of story. 4 models are being dropped: The three gaming desktops and the m1730.

 

XPS 620, XPS 720, XPS 730.

Hmmm... let's see which other one competes with Alienware's offerings?

XPS 210? Nah.

Wait...

XPS 1730? Yep. With Alienware's M17x.

 

Ha so XPS computers will no longer be considered gaming machines... They might as well merge the remaining XPS laptops with the Inspiron line.

 

I really like the XPS 630. Where else can you get a Dell name and be able to overclock something?

Will there be an overclock PC from Dell?

 

I don't see XPS laptops going anywhere soon.

It's good time to buy XPS desktop from outlet it seems though.

720 tower w/ Quadcore, 8800 GTX SLI for 1400 bucks (no monitor included) seems like a pretty good deal to me.

 

Remember that the m1710 is still sold even the bigger brother has been around for quite some time now. Think about it this could be the 4th one.

 

just read it on engadget sad news since i dont like ailenware. I dont know if it applies to the laptop line tho.

great so now home users will have to spend an extra grand so they can have a stupid looking alien imprint on their desktops. this shows dell's greed. lol

 

Wow so dell is screwing up so badly lately. I guess they like pushing people over to the dark side (by dark side i mean apple).

Also to the person who said propriatary power supplies i have an xps 410 and from what i understand it can be replaced by a normal power supply.

 

Actually i think it will be the 210,420 ,720 and the 17 inch laptop.

They just came out with the 630 why get rid of it.

 

In the UK you can still get the M1710 new. But it's been unavailable new in the US since early January this year. It isn't currently available new in Canada either.

If anyone wants to read the Wall Street Journal article, it's in today's Wall Street Journal (Tuesday May 13, 2008) on pages. B1 and B2. I'd scan it, but I'd probably get in trouble with the moderators so I won't.

 

Hmmmm.... my take on this is that the new Dell Inspirons coming soon look like XPS laptops, so perhaps Dell's re-branding their XPS laptops to Inspirons and focusing on Alienware as the high-end laptop. Time will tell.

 

Dell is dropping only the more gaming-oriented XPS systems.

So... they'll be keeping the XPS systems that aren't specifically gaming-oriented.

 

Does that include the m1530? I was planning on waiting to get mine mid-summer, but if they intend to discontinue it...

 

i am going to go to michael dell and tell him that he is a (insert swearword) and kick him in the balls for being stupid. then ill cut the alienware computer line down.. hate that stupid alien head symbol. its a stupid symbol. they also weigh too much to even be called laptops. you might as well take your gmaing desktop and drag it to hell that drag an alienware to heaven.

210 is not a gaming desktop. It's in league with the XPS one and Inspiron desktops.

Recall the acrticle:

There are only 4 gaming units, denoted as gaming units by Dell: 3 are desktops. One is a notebook.

 

If they get rid of the XPS series laptop, I'm sure it will be replaced with a similarly themed line with a different label These XPS laptops are the best balance of performance and value for laptops out there.

 

Don't take my word for it, but I don't think it will include the m1530 because it's more of a mainstream laptop.
