In general yes, but in Sony Z it's not that easy. It needs to be completely opened up and keyboard removed.

Well thats the good thing with Dell, atleast the XPS1330/1550 :) 4 screws, pops out thats it ^^
I am really looking forward to the Studio 13... I did not have much luck with my M1330. The Studio 13 HAS to better in many ways...

Well keyboard doesn't look bad. I like the style. But what I'm wondering is about the speakers, they don't look of good quality. Just 2 speakers in the side of the keyboard makes me wonder how they'll sound.

I like the sub woofer on my Inspiron 9300.

Yes, it's possible to replace, but I don't wanna do that. A year ago I upgraded my Inspiron 8600, replaced the 32 MB video card (GeForce 5200 GO) with a 128 MB Quadro FX1000; replaced the 512 MB RAM stick with 2 sticks 1 GB each, hard drive, etc. Back then it was a 3 year old system (4+ as of today) and the $300-350 upgrade was better than buying a new notebook.
But just think about this: why would I want to buy a brand new system with a 5400rpm HDD and then buy another 7200rpm HDD and replace it, and then trying to sell that slower HDD? As if I got nothing else to do. :) That's just totally defeats the purpose of buying a new system, IMHO.

Dell Belgium newsletter (translated): "Biggest XPS Sale ever!" for the XPS M1530 and M1330. I hope this means we're getting the new Studio XPS line soon (seeing as they are apparently dumping their XPS lines with these prices)

Because in many cases, buying a second hard drive is cheaper then upgrading with computer manufacturer. And you get to keep the original drive - for backup purposes or resale, whatever you fancy.

Not to mention that many people actually prefer a 5400 rpm minute drive. It's cheaper, it's less noisy and it strains the battery less.

Yeah, sometimes it's worth it to wait for CES. I'm waiting for the XPS 16 in particular, but I'm a little worried that my expectations are too high which are basically hoping for a model better than the M1530.

XPS 1640 what we can be sure of Monteviniea chipset Core 2 Duo.

DDR3 RAM because I saw it for sale already on DELL's site for the Studio XPS 1640.

it will look alot similar to a Studio 17 just with different back of the screen. Same Hinge design.

The only thing up for debate is will it be ATI or NVIDIA powered.

My guess is some typed of NVIDIA GDDR3 512 graphics card, Not Super gaming, Alineware class, but above the Studio 17's ATI 3650.

My money would be on nVidia for the 16, most likely the 9600M GT. Because for ATI cards, unless Dell is opting for a power horse like the HD3850 (which would be too good to be true), anything below that like the HD2600 or the HD3650 won't compare to the 9600M GT in terms of performance.

Maybe they'll get their hands on the new 46** or 48** ATi series.
There is an 15.4" MSI laptop that has the 4650 card wich is supposed to be released in the beginning of the new year...

my money is on 9600M GT or 9700M GT/S at most, they wont want to take sales away from there XPS M1730 which i take it will get a refresh at some point.

I was all set to buy a Studio 15 when I found this forum and thread. After reading the whole thing, it sounds like the XPS Studio 16 has everything I'm looking for (maybe too much!) but I have one possibly dumb question (remember, I'm a newbie :) )
Will the 16" be 16:9 aspect ratio? I will be using my new lapper almost exclusively to surf the net and watch blu ray movies so 16:9 and 1080p are a must. Thanx in advance.

So far the scattered leaked information has hinted towards a 16:9 aspect ratio.
And also that so far 16.4" laptops have been with a 16:9 screen. (Sony Vaio FW, Acer 6930/6935 series, can't remeber any more...)

Yeah the whole point of the 16" form factor in the first place was because of the 16:9 acpect ratio. It would be pointless and very stupid for the Studio XPS 16 to not come in 16:9.

If you can wait until CES January 8-11 we should know a lot more by then if it isn't released by then. Expect a release next month.

Do you think I should wait for it, my biggest buying point is the GPU do you think I will be disapointed? If the ATi 4670 comes out on it with GDDR4 I will be happy, if the 4870 comes out I am going to go crazy.

gddr4 on a studio xps now way, maybe an xps or gaming.

But I have confirmed the system RAM is DDR3, the GPU ram will probably be GDDR3 as well

It's up to you. Can you wait? Do you need a notebook within the next month? When they do come out you should anticipate that it may take up to an additional month before you get it after you order.

Lease - not really ... however, you can sign up for a Dell Credit Card thru Dell Financial Services (DFS) and get no interest financing for 1 year and then payoff your purchase in Jan 2010 ... essentially a One year lease ;)

Yeah I am pretty sure the 9600GT is going to be in there. But in reality what other choice do I have anyway? Especially now that the Canadian dollar is so low in value, or else my choice would be unanimous, with something from Xoitic pc.

I doubt these will be announced at CES at all. I checked the official CES website, no mention of a Dell pavilion at all. I think Dell will simply announce them on their website pretty soon (a week, two weeks?).
Most likely they will be available for purchase immediately after they appear.

In theory yes. In reality Dell Mini 9 has a mediocre LED screen that isn't any brighter than the CCFL found on Mini 12. Nor is the contrast any better.

I don't care about 16" at all~! I can get a good desktop much cheaper and more powerful for that money. And gaming on a notebook is not comfortable anyways. Plus, the whole point of a notebook is to be (relatively) light and very portable. Or am I missing something?

Happy New Year! (still waiting for it here in western hemisphere).

Of course desktop is much more powerful at the same price, however there are people that do need to carry his computer around, yet want to do gaming.

I am a Hong Kong student studying for the university in Australia, and I do bring my laptop back when I go back for holiday.

    I care about the 16", a lot.

Remember there are supply only if there are demand, when you do not care about something, there are always people do.
