That's the first one I've seen with the back-lit keyboard on. Sweet.

Cheers Pal,
And yeah it’s a lot for me too but I haven’t bought a laptop in 7 years and I need one, the right one of course…
Thanks again -
Just got this from my rep:
"I was able to find out some information regarding the Studio XPS 13. The resolution is 1280x800, I was unable to find the aspect ratio, it weighs 4.85 lbs, and it has 2 USB ports. I was also unable to get any information regarding the blu-ray option on the 13.
Don't worry about the nearly 5 lbs. though. Another rep I spoke to said, "That means it's sturdy".
-
No prob's....
You will know when you have found the right deal, and be *relaxed* after you have ordered.
Good luck...let us know how it works if you do it by phone!

Any of you guys know what the battery life is on this machine?
-
considering its only a 6 cell battery, and depending on the CPU Core 2 Duo you pick its will either use 25 watts or 35 Watts, of juice
the Graphics card uses 30 watts which is the ATI 3670
and the DDR3 RAM uses 1.5 volts
maybe 2 to 3 hours -
So, tell us how you really feel about 16:9.
Why the utter disdain? But a 16:10 is perfectly acceptable? What's the big diff.?

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
16x9 screens have less vertical space, so while ideal for movies, means more scrolling up and down in docs and browsing the web. -
Ugh that MBP 17" makes these notebook pale in comparison when it comes to battery life. You can't beat the price per spec this system has though which is why I've decided to go with it. Plus I'm getting a copy of AVID Media Composer. AVID>>>>>FCS2, which was the only reason I was getting a Mac. Thanks anyway Ice Cold.

Can anybody comment on the optional Graphics card for the Studio XPS 1340?
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M - 256MB
What’s it like for games? What sort of games?
Cheers
T -
As soon as 1340 gets a Blu-ray option, 9-cell battery, and is available in white or red color, i'm buying it...
-
LOL from CNET:
"While we're still pretty unsure of what Dell was up to when it combined its midrange Studio and high-end XPS laptop lines into the new (wait for it...) Studio XPS line...
Graphics are limited to an ATI Mobility RADEON M86XT chip..."
It is true. I guess if you are a fan of Dell, you'll find the good in this (or you are ok with web browsing, etc.) but I guess if you are looking for an XPS level machine, you are dissappointed.
Cali Dell rep said they had no plans to refresh the XPS line! I was surprised he didn't say "I don't know..."
I think they need to save Alienware hence the long delay in releasing this and pushing people that way. -
That's what i want to know! I am disappointed that it's not 9500MG at least.
-
So the weight thrown around for the 1340 is 4.6lbs, what about the 1640? I saw an unofficial ridiculous 6.6lbs mentioned. An average of +1lb is added when you compared this to the last generation.
-
+1 major bummer
btw 4.85 to be exact for the 13. Frickin' brick!! -
I posted earlier a link which said that the 1340 weighs 4.9 lbs (=2.22 Kg).
-
Note sure on material, but the 1340 starts at 2.2kg (4.8 lbs). You can buy one now. Link here. The weight is what's keeping me from buying.
-
Previous gen (m1330) was 1.8 kg (about 400 gram difference), but i suppose 1340 is ok too, i hope it's more solid.
-
That's only 3.96lbs. Now we're looking at 4.88lbs - almost +1lb
-
Yeah...that might make a difference to me. I would love for some of the B&M stores, etc ~ to get ahold of these. So, you can play with them a bit.
That will happen down the line, also!
Cin
-
Wow
Well, maybe their delay was trying to figure out how to add more weight?
-
Or maybe they are rock solid. What is with the additional weight? Where does it come from? Does a edge to edge glass display literally mean real 'glass'?
-
Come on. Why all the hating on 16:9?
What's wrong with it? Sure, you lose 100 or so pixels vertically but you gain an extra inch, surely that makes up for it. Oh wow, you have to scroll down a tiny bit more but you gain more space to multitask.
Get used to it, it's the future. Sony's complete line up is now almost all 16:9 and every major manufacturer has released a 16:9 laptop. -
No hate for 16:9 here. But I wouldn't buy it just for the 16:9. It's just a marketing gimmick to go with the whole HD marketing hype.
-
so does this mean desktop displays will finally adopt 16:9?
from 17" 16:10 to a 16.4" 16:9 display you are losing .6" of an inch thats alot on a Laptop.
However having a Studio 17 I am pretty bitter about the 1640 since The same Configuration as my 1737 cost the same, but it has Better Specs DDR3 RAM and a much better graphics card. And a 7200RPM HDD where as I only got 5400, plus you get a $200 Gift card to boot.
I would raise hell with DELL but they have decided not to bill me for some reason. So I am not gonna say anything.
Maybe it was a glitch in the system but its been over 30 days since I ordered and not a single bill.
They do have my correct address since I have gotten a catalog and a promo flyer since my order. when I log into my DELL account is shows no recent orders.
Funny because when I bought my PSP, I got the Bill immediately.
I'll just consider my 1737 my 2008 gift from DELL. -
It's just every thread about the new SXPS' has involved the same people saying 16:9 makes you lose space.
@Ice Cold, you're not losing .6", you're gaining 1.4" from 15". The 16:9 equivalent of 17in is 18.4in as the two have the same amount of horizontal pixels.
1280 by 800 -- 1366 by 768
1440 by 900 -- 1600 by 900
1920 by 1200 -- 1920 by 1080 -
A question I'd pose is what is the vertical view of a 14" laptop? What is the vertical view of a 15.4" laptop? What is the vertical view of a 16", 16:9 laptop?
Joe -
Vertical View? What?
-
Plus, it makes the perfect aspect ratio for useing your high def widescreen TV as an external montor.
-
Good luck with that!
Your gonna need it!
-
Precisely
My 8930G works like like a charm at native res over HDMI with my 52" Bravia XBR.
-
What do you mean, could it be they gifted me a system?
I suspect they are doing it on purpose since DFS and CIT Bank are know to be shady.
since my order qualified for 9 months no interest, what they are doing is not sending me a bill in time, so I get hit with a late fee and therefore it forfeits, the No interest.
stranger things have happened. Its also weird because my DELL account shows no orders even when I search for the last 90 days.
My PSP ordered long ago does show up. -
So, now that I've got some fellow 16:9'ers, an observation and a question.
1. The new 13" does not look 16:9 to me, how bout' you?
2. Are there comparable 13" w/ 16:9 that you know of besides the Vaio Z? -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Well I have a 15.4" 16:10 laptop with a resolution of 1680x1050.
This is a 16.4" 16:9 laptop with a resolution of 1366x768.
Whoopdy-doo a bigger screen with less resolution!
You are losing a TON of real estate. It makes no sense. The reason manufacturers are all going this way is streamlining their processes. It has nothing to do with what the market actually needs or wants. -
I cannot find the price in Canada can someone please find me the Canadian version of that website please!
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
MSI X-Slim 320 netbook, has a 13.4" 16x9 screen. -
And what is that GPU on the XPS M1640?
-
I do not mind the new 16 inch screens 16:9, just don;t try with media hype and advertising that its somehow better than a 17 inch screen with 16:10. Just because it happens to be 16:9.
I seriously don't even see the need or benefit to watching a Bluray movie in 1080p on 17 inch or 16 inch TN laptop screen. -
Sorry, I meant what is the vertical measurement, in inches, of monitor viewing space for each of those configurations?
For instance, does a 14" traditional screen have 8" of vertical viewing? Does a 15.4" traditional screen have 9" of vertical viewing? And then what does a 16" in 16 by 9 offer in vertical viewing?
I'm trying to put the lost vertical real estate in context....is it the equivalent of using a 14" laptop with a wider screen?
Joe -
Please someone help me find it in Canada!
-
This way, I can buy Blu Ray movies to watch while I'm at work and still be able to watch them again, at home, on my PS3 and 52" Bravia XBR
-
nice, I got the same LCD.
-
Thats why (thanks to this site) when I saw the most viewed laptop was the DV5T, I looked into it, read about the awards it won, etc. etc. and given the specs and price, unless I got royalty payments from Dell, this new 'refresh' makes no sense to me.
At all.
When CNET questions why they dd it (and they always love everything any big vendor does), you know there are problems.
I bet anything the long delay was in trying to figure out if to scrap this or if there is a niche for it still...because groundbreaking or innovative...these two laptops are not. -
That's Dell's fault. Not every 16.4in has a 1366 by 768, only the low-end ones. And not every 15.4in has a 1650 by 1050 screen. you can't blame the aspect ratio when it's the manufacturer's fault.
-
I have to say that they look awesome, and price is great, and spec. is good. One of few dell laptops that I like (others are m4400 and m6400)
-
The Studio XPS 1340 isnt 16:9, it's 16:10.
It is an ATI HD3670 -
anyone, anyone???
-
1. Read the thread before posting
2. These are not yet officially available on any of Dell's websites, even US.
