    Looks really sexy.
16:9 laptop is absolutely pointless imo.
Too bad about the graphics card.

If style is your highest priority this would do it for ya. Otherwise go buy an HP or Asus with better graphics and 16:10 screen for a bit less, or a Sager for a bit more. I can see these being very popular in corporate environments because of the style. Maybe that's the angle Dell is going for?

I think alot of people are knocking this offering because it's Dell and they haven't introduced anything truly revolutionary.

But for me, this is perfect. It's a 16" in a lightweight frame (probably come to weigh around 6 pounds) with an awesome-offered screen resolution.

For the 16" per dell's website...

Both screens offered are LED, usually an upgrade or not yet offered on many (like the DV5t IIRC). Actually, it lists the upgrade as a 1920x1080 RGB LED

DDR3 ram at 1+ghz, 4gigs minimum offered, standard 320 gig HDD at 7200 rpms, standard good video card with plenty of ram....yeah, it's not the best video card out there. But it's a pretty good one for a mid-size laptop IMHO.

    Standard Penryn P-series P8400 processor.

    Intel wireless.

This is essentially for $1200 with a $200 dell gift card included? Seems pretty good to me.

P.s. I've been building 15.4" from Sony, HP, Dell, and Sager for the past 2 months, and for the price this offers better than anyone I've seen as a complete package for this price. The only thing close is the Gateway P-7811/7805u and that's a 17" and is alot heavier.

So let's assume that Blu-Ray will not be offered in the 13" model. I know some are saying it will, but if it is'nt, does anyone know of a comparable 13" or 14"model that does offer blu-ray and high-res screen besides the Vaio Z?

edit: IIRC HP does as well. Anyone else?

    Hi ya Cincess!

Ya I am pretty sure that's what this machine is going to do. Maybe business class notebooks aren't selling as well these days? I know our company bought a few hundred Vostros late 2008 as opposed to the Latitudes they used to supply to us. So they we were obviously more interested in a lower cost business class notebook. But then I don't get the 16:9 thing? To me it's just moronic. Even for an entertainment notebook. I sure hope the world moves on from 16:9 notebooks soon, I am really tired of them.

I think you should re-check the pricing after you build it to that spec... $1200 lololol.

Uhm I can get an HP DV5 for $1100 CDN with almost same specs and better graphics. I can get a Sony FW for about $1200 CDN, again very similar specs with an HD 3450 (IIRC). And Sager will obviously be more costly but you get way more options and obviously way better graphics.

I spec'd out a modest 1640 (P8600, everything else stock) and it was over $1600 USD.

Herro! :D I understand...I can totally see upper management getting the 1340's. But not the 1640's (though nice looking) ;)

I think after a few weeks and the hoopla dies down a bit, we will see some further changes, and price cuts...etc. :D

  Gulp! Almost $2K for a 1340?? That's alot of money. You can get a lot more in a laptop for what you have built, and for the price your spending. That price is way too high. You could build a 1330, and get so much more for that! ;)

Does it even include the $200 Gift Card promo, that the 1640 has??

And, at that price, it only includes a 2 year warranty vs. 3....
I just noticed it doesnt even include the webcam.. :(

    I would reconfig.. ;)

I'm not sure how you're getting those prices. I'm seeing $1249 for an upgrade to P8600 and everything else stock (4GB RAM, 320GB 7200RPM, 3670 512MB) minus a $200 gift card. Seems pretty reasonable.

Maybe you should recheck the pricing?

Hold on there, skipper. As Cin mentioned, that configuration is very much overpriced. Try give Dell a call and see if you can renegotiate the price and if they can throw in a few extras for you.

    I guess so.......

I just checked my Dell EPP site..both are not availi' on there yet.

So, for those that have Dell EPP availi' to them. To get your EPP applicable discounts, you will have to call EPP Sales Directly...and have them build & complete the order for you...I just found out! ;)

And, remember if you pay with your Dell EPP...you should be able to save an additional 4% off your purchase. Also, be sure to check with your rep if the 12 months interest free financing on Dell DPA is available. :D

I just priced out a studio xps 1340 for $1774 without tax.

    What's the difference between Intel's 9500 processor and Intel's 9600 processor. The 1640 offers the 9600 while the 1340 doesn't.

Does anyone know if the 128 GB SSD drive is from Samsung? Too bad Dell doesn't offer the faster SSD drives from Intel.

The 13 inch laptop looks nice, but it weights way too much at over 4.5 lbs. Isn't Dell supposed to release a lighter weight Adamo laptop? I would definitely buy one if it had similar specs to the studio xps.

Question, what other choice do I have for a 15,4' minimum laptop with bluray and a full HD screen?

    Currently i'm considering:
-Studio 15, quite cheap with 8400/4Go/320Go/ATI/CCFL1920x1080, less than 1000€ with some options (like custom color, backlight keyboard...). Price with some discount and with 4 years warranty on site: <1000€
-Studio 1640, with the RGBLED screen, default options + bluray, price to be defined, but will surely be >1300€ I think.

The XPS1530 is not really an option, the bluray burner being very expensive and the difference with the Studio 15 being not big enough to justify the price difference (especially with the Studio 1640 featuring a RGBLED display...).

I have big difficulties to find other 15 or 16 with a WUXGA screen. So if you have some advices...

Where is the $200 promo gift card in your config? At least that would bring down the price (sort of) a bit.

There is no set date for the Adamo release..There is a thread, I will find it and link it here.
Here is some discussion on the Adamo:

Forgot to mention the promo card -- Dell will send you a promo card in 6 to 8 weeks. So guess that helps a bit -- though you will probably have to spend something $500 to use it -- at least that was the case 4 years ago. Guess it would help purchasing a 24 inch LCD widescreen monitor!

Wow did everyone who bought a 1737 a few weeks ago get screwed it!!!.

    Ouch.

Also the Graphics card debate is settled its significantly better than the ATI 3650.

    http://products.amd.com/pt-br/Mobil...f7=&f8=&f9=&f10=&f11=&f12=&f13=&f14=&f15=True

Basically its a ATI 3670, with 512MB DDR3 RAM and a very fast clock speed GPU at 680mhz vs. the ATI 3650 is only clocked at 450mhz.

And the RAM is 800mhz vs 500mhz on the 3650. It should be a nice Gaming machine.

Yeah...When I purchased my 1530 shortly after they were released last year, I received the $200 Gift Promo Card...It was nice to have.

But, waiting that full 8 weeks wasn't fun at all :(

Oh, the deals are really sweet right now on the LCD WS monitors! :D

Do you have EPP, at all? That can help with the pricing a bit.

I wonder how soon some coupon codes will be released...I imagine w/in the next few weeks.

Of course it won't be an Intel SSD. It's all marketing.
When the average end-user sees the config page, they will be like OMG SSD, and not know about the major problems they have. The Intel one would cost too much, and people will bash Dell for overpricing....

$200 isn't very cheap, that's probably the real life amount you would pay.

Well 3670 sounds alright. Ram speed is not as significant but yes it helps too. All in all maybe this machine is ok but I am so totally put off with the 16:9 thing I doubt I'd ever buy one. If they came out with a 16:10 version I'd be more likely to not look elsewhere.

    1. How did the person who found the configuration pages for these 2 laptops? I can't find them from Dell's homepage/rest of website anywhere.

    2. Does anyone know how long Dell offers the $200 gift card after they put the laptop up for sale?

I'm surprised there is no 9 cell battery available. They should've made these available. They worked well with the 1330/1530's....

Who know's next week, you could very well see additional batt' options.

I can't decide what to do. This DELL 1640 is nice my configuration comes out equal to what I paid for my 1737 $1350 ish

    with a T9400 CPU 2.53ghz 6MB Cache 1066 FSB.

But the 1640 is so much better because of

4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a significantly better Graphics card. 512MB DDR3 vs what I got for the same price

    256MB DDR2.

    Its just not fair.

Is it 21 days from when you place your order or 21 days from when you get your machine delivered? Plus there a $200 gift card which I didn't get.

what does means "edge to edge"?

the xps 1640 it´s a little bigger but just the space between the end of the keyboard and the End.

Will they have Remote control as the 1530?

I do have EPP. When I bought my last computer from Dell awhile back, I noticed it was actually cheaper to buy a computer on the consumer site when Dell had promotions versus the business site with an employee discount. Maybe that's changed over the years though.

Techbargains.com has it listed, that's how I found out.

I'm willing to bet Dell will offer a high capacity 6 cell or 9-cell battery within a month....this thing isn't even listed on their main website yet, so I'm sure more options will be added soon. I just hope they keep this minimum config at the same or better price point.

A 320 gig 7200 RPM HDD, 4 gigs of DDR3 ram, and a pretty hot 512mb Vid card in a mid-size laptop probably around 6-6.5 pounds for $1200? Where else?

EPP has some great advantages! ;)

You may want to print your config.

Then, call Dell EPP, tell them the 1340/1640 is not on the EPP site..BUT you want to purchase today. And per EPP wording on the site, they will make a better deal then the Consumer site. ;)

And, remember that in addn' to the 7% (or what you may have), there's the 4% DPA EPP, if you use that.

If you get the right EPP Rep, you can get a good deal.

I have worked with a great EPP Rep, on my last 2 recent purchases. PM me for further info, if you'd like :D

    Cin ;) :)

Yeah, I knew they wouldn't offer something like that -- but it would be nice if Dell gave consumers the option to purchase either the Samsung or Intel SSD drives at maybe a slight premium to actual cost to them. It would be nice if the computer companies would credit you with the cost of their basic HDD too towards your upgrade, which I have a feeling many haven't done in the past.

Yeah, I agree $200 isn't very cheap considering they probably are implicitly charging you something like $200 for the base HDD, but it's much better than what they charged in the past.

It's using old hardware though, even if it is still more powerful than most systems. It should have an LED backlight, the faster FSB, a quad core option, and Geforce 9800 class GPU.

Thx Cin -- i'll drop you a message if I wind up deciding to purchase a new Dell laptop! Don't think the 1340 is going to work for me though as i'm looking for something lighter. Guess I'll have to wait to see the specs for the Adamo whenever that is released.

Take your Config...call and speak with an actual Dell Rep..tell them your willing to purchase, but are hesitating because there is no free shipping.

Let them know you will finalize the purchase, if they can get you free shipping. This has worked for me in the past ;) Several times.

I just ordered a 37" TV and got next day free shipping on it :D, Same with my Mini 9, and..my 1530 ;)

Having received my 1737 on 12/15 I am a bit upset about this. Its a few days past the 21 days I wonder if they will work with me.

especially since the 1640 has better specs than my 1737 for the same price.

    not sure what to do.

    I would reconfig.. ;)

    Cin ;) :)[/QUOTE]

Yes it’s a lot, breaks down like this….

    Base - $1,199

    + Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB $50 = $1,249
    + Microsoft Works Plus 2008 $79 = $1,328
    + An extra year In-Home Service, Parts + Labor $199 = $1,527
    + Edge-to-Edge 13.3" HD WXGA Slim WLED LCD with 1.3 Megapixel $125 = $1,652
    + NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M - 256MB $100 = $1,752
    + Dell Wirless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR) $20 = $1,772

    + Shipping & Handling $25.00
    + Tax $148.26
    + State Environmental Fee $16.00

    = $1,961.26

I am NOT including the $200 Promo Dell Gift Card Card
Do you really think you would get somewhere with the price on the phone?

It's like the new HP's which have a glass covering over the lcd screen which makes the whole screen look like glass.
