im going with the 13xx screen size. Its better for games, and plus i dont really need the real estate. Not an avid photoshop or multimedia user for that matter.

I can't make up my mind on the resolution. If 1600x900 was available, I would get that. 1366x768 seems too low while 1920x1080 could cause more eye strain than normal.

For those of you who were into such things when the M1330 / M1530 were released, how long after their initial availability was it until the first 20%, 25%, or 30% off coupons were available?

It was about a year and a half when the first 25% off coupons showed up.

Within 4-5 months, if I remember correctly.

Do you have an EPP discount thru your school or work?

Those are 5% or less discounts. Dell is not stupid to give incredibly good deals on new/relatively new products with the 1st year they are out.

Bummer. Now, if the Adamo would hurry its way to retail - along with the Vaio z690 refresh - I could jump on something.

If you have the EPP you can combine your 7% discount with the Dell DPA 4% additional discount. ;)

That will also help, and you should be able to get the $200 promo gift card also...and if you finance Dell DPA the 4% on top of that. I did this with my EPP discount last year when I purchased my 1530 in January. ;)

I would like just gray plastic or brushed metal like the hinges. That would be nice...better than the wood or leather. But between those 2 I prefer leather...

For the Dell DPA accounts... do you automatically get 4%? Right now they have the 12 month 0% financing... so you could actually combine that with a student discount to get 11% off and 12 month 0% financing...? I just didn't see where it talked about the 4%...

Look at the discounts on the new Latitude Precision series.
And, adding a 200$ GC to the Studio XPS seems to me like a good deal.

It will show up in cart.
Dell advertised it as a 48 hour offer yesterday.

    I'm confused.

When I configure a 1640 [Germany], there's always an "integrated DVBT-TV Tuner and Antenna" on the confirmation page (before adding it to the basket).

I haven't heard anywhere that the 1640 has such a tuner built-in. (And frankly, I don't want it, but cannot take it out of the config anywhere.) Does anyone know anything about this?

I am dissapointed with Dell. Expensive laptops for the same components as the competition.

The studio line has basically the same components.

    What were we waiting for?

For the Dell DPA discount thru EPP Purchase, normally it is available at *checkout*.

    • If you don't have a Dell DPA and apply for one you should be able to get the 4%.
    • And, if you already have a Dell DPA, normally what you do is at checkout is ~ when your Dell / DPA account information pulls in you would want to change your method of payment to Credit Card.
    • Then, when it switches to the Credit Card payment method screen, you should be able to see the *Pay with Your Dell DPA and save an additional 4%*.
    • Whereas, you would change your method of payment to the Dell DPA ~ and it would add the 4% in at the continued checkout process.

(At that time when you switch from paying by CC to Dell DPA - you can either: Apply for the Dell DPA or Choose to Pay with Dell DPA). Whatever one is applicable for you.

***For some reason it's not switching and showing the 4% applicable DPA discount. So, what you want to do is to configure you order ~ and call the Dell EPP Customer Care number to place your order with a Rep. ***

Tell them at the end of your order, that you were going to pay by your Dell DPA to get the addtl 4%, but it's not availi' online. Tell them you are entitled to this, and to complete the sale, you would like them to add the additional 4% discount.

They may tell you it's only availi' online. Don't let them tell you this. Per the EPP setup, they are supposed to match Dell Home Customer deals. ;) If you have a Rep, unwilling to do this, simply say thanks but not thanks, disconnect the call ~ call back and try another Rep.

That may seem like an arduous task, but if you want that additional 4% savings, it's worth it & and you are entitled to it. Luckily for me, I have the same rep I deal with (and he will add it in at the end of the order).

For those without a Dell EPP, and ordering thru the Dell home channel ~ You can get the Dell DPA discount at checkout. You would do it the same way described above (switch to Credit Card payment). And, you would be entitled to an additional 3% discount by paying by Dell DPA. :D

I believe this deal is gone now. :( I tried several config's, and I couldn't get it to appear. However; you may have luck getting this by phone a Dell Rep directly vs. ordering online. And, sometimes you can get better deals this way! ;) Just have your final config' in front of you when you call them.

    I hope this helps! :D

    Cin ;) :)

Hmm, I guess the "Dell XPS" subforum should be renamed "Dell XPS and Studio XPS"? It would make it clear when more discussions on these Studio XPS laptops arise, because we currently have a "Dell XPS" subforum and a "Dell Inspiron and Studio" subforum -- the new laptops are Dell Studio XPS 16 and 13. So yeah...

How do you think 9500m 256MB Geforce in 1340 will perform?
    According to:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9500M-GS.8167.0.html

it scores around 4100points in 3dMark06. You think with proper drivers score would hit close to 5K? Which gives you a decent FPS in COD4 on small resolution. I'm absolutely in love with 1340 :) Need to sell my m860tu now :p :D

Good idea, or just create a Dell XPS Studio......Subforum. I think it would be easier on the eyes..and not a struggle to get thru.

That way not everything isn't merged into one *ever growing* thread like this.

Don't make the mistake in thinking the "9500m" is actually a 9500M GS or G.

It's quoted as the 9500M but infact it's actually a 9400M G and 9200M GS in Hybrid SLi.. I don't think the performance will quite be the same, although I reckon it'll be fairly close.

    Best wait for reviews imo.

Yes exactly, I think that probably bench will achieve something like 3000/3500 points in 3dmark 2006 thanks to the hybrid SLI, that's just a step behind a pure 9500GS and it also explain why they choose 9500m as name for this architecture. But obvioulsy it's better wait for a more deep review :radar:

Highly doubtful....i mean i wish it were true, and wish it would come true, but im not gettinh my hopes up. This to dell is a multimedia laptop and not a gaming one. they would not put a gpu that would compete with their gaming line including Alienwares.

Besides, with the heating problems this comp might have per the notebook.com review, i doubt they would proceed to add MORE heat to an already "hot" laptop.

You should get free shipping. The best thing to do is to config' your order and call Dell EPP directly and have them build it and apply *free shipping*. Let them know that you would like this in order to conclude the sale ;)

It should work. Shipping isn't usually a big deal with Dell EPP. It's always worked for me, if not offered.

    See above ^^^^ :D

No problem...I hope that it works for you.

And, it's good to see the thread moved into a different area of the Dell forum! :D

Like noverlap already explained, LCDs don't look good outside of their native resolution. So you have to seriously consider what resolution you want before you make a decision to buy. Now I have a feeling that eventually Dell will offer a 1600x900 option with the XPS 16. I just wish they would do that soon, along with a blu-ray writer.

So what exactly is "XPS" about these machines?

I've yet to see that mentioned anywhere... There is nothing in cutting edge, unique, or even great in terms of components.

Obviously there has been enough comments in this thread already about the resolution, choice (or lack thereof) in graphics cards, etc.

It seems they just watered down what the XPS line used to stand for :/

For me, the Studio line actually offers more value as well for what you pay and what you get in terms of components.

What exactly do you mean by 'dont look good'? Do you mean the aspect makes it look wrong or there are other problems? I'm with you on this one and feel the full 1080 is going to be too much (things too small) and the standard 720 not enough, ideally i'd much prefer a 15inch Studio XPS or a Studio 15 with a ATI 3650, I suppose in the worst case can just get the 1080p and ramp up the icon settings, and viewing %'s in firefox & office... :(
