Are new models supposed to come out in the near future? Do we know what they have in store for us?
The 1640 looks good, but the res (and 16:9 ratio) and a few other minor issues bug me.

I hope soon though!
And, I'm sure we will be seeing some nice models!
Cin -
Is it just wishful thinking? Or do you have some kind of source on this? Im not bashing, I honestly want to know, because if not, then it would just make people wait for nothing. -
Well, we should be seeing Core i7 mobile (or, whatever they are going to call it) and the new chipsets.. out by summer.
-
Cin -
-
Hehe, well thats true. There WILL be new models - some day.
But seeing as Dell just release 2 models and have revealed the adamo i highly doubt they will release something new for a while.
Remember we had rumors of the 1340, 1640 for months before this release.

Edit: also, what he said ^^ -
aaah the joy of being so patient...

Soooo Core i7 in January 2010

Any1 ordered 1340 yet? When is it suppose to arrive ?
make sure to share it with us
-
i have one in production. supposed to ship the 27th
-
And, congrat's on your order! Please keep us advised as to when it ships and when you receive it!
Cin -
Maybe I'll go for the LG P310, but if the 1340 gets a built-in BluRay I'll definitely go Dell. I'll wait for a few weeks before I decide. -
Mine is supposed to ship on the 27th, too.

Uhm i just noticed (while pricing out my dream studio xps 1640
) that the only gpu option available is the ATI Mobility RADEON® M86XT, i was under the assumption that the 3670 was available. What is this new gpu, atleast i havent heard of it, and how does it compare?
-
Yeah, I mean since I waited to see what came out in CES as well before buying, I was dissappointed.
I think my reaction is more common than uncommon, even among Dell fans I know.
My husband has a Dell laptop (older Inspiron) and it has been great! But I'm neither a fanboy or hater of Dell...or any company.
I evaluate products on their specs and merit...and never buy just 'because' a vendor I like makes it. This industry changes weekly
The wierd thing is that I monitor a lot of tech news, more from the marketing side then from purely tech side, and there has been barely a whisper compared to other laptop/desktop mfg's regarding this 'new' release from Dell.
And I think that is mostly because there is nothing innovative or spectacular about it other than it is a new release...and that is where my dissappointment is. Dell's new ultralight (forget the name always) is a potentially different story...
When you compare what you are getting vs. what you can get that performs better, has better components, is about 30% cheaper, won awards, and is battletested, it's hard to want to buy this other than to scratch an itch because you have been waiting.
The HP I bought isn't my dream laptop either but the price was so incredible, I can save the rest and use it to get an i7 when they come out
The price on the XPS' are great too right now but I wanted Montevino-based laptop and anything but an 8xxx graphics card.
I'm guessing if Dell does continue the true XPS line and come out with something innovative again, it will probably be an i7 XPS series at the end of the year. -

M86XT is the codename for the 3670.

Speaking of marketing, how come Dell took off their splash add on the main US landing page at dell.com for the 'new' XPS Studio line.
In fact, if not for a tiny banner in the top left of the Laptop landing page itself, I wouldn't notice they even had something new to offer.
I wonder why they removed the marketing draw for this... -
I was just taking a look at LG P310 13.3" laptop that will supposedly be equipped with 9600m GT. It isn't released yet and there hasn't been much info about it since november, do you think they will manage to fit it into 13.3" laptop? I would see some serious heat issues over there...
9600m GT gets some amazing scores in 3dMark06 scoring around 6000points. I hate LG's look personaly I'm in love with 1340 but the GPU... What do u all think? If 1340 is able to score close to 5k in 3Dmark06 I will be satified > -
No. I would think rather a 3300 - 3500 effort.

When I was looking at the Studio XPS 13, I noticed that there are only dell wireless cards available...no intel
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini-Card
Dell Wireless 1515 802.11n Half Mini-Card
Which card is better? -

Is anyone else confused about why the Studio XPS 13" is almost 5lbs? I was ready to pull the trigger on this laptop, but I can't believe it's so heavy. My previous laptop was a Sony SZ so I was originally looking at the Z series...
-
Any chance Dell would offer Windows 7 (upon release) for free if you purchased Vista Ultimate with your new premium laptop?
-
Cin -
The XPS M1330 was 3.97 lbs or thereabout, if I remember correctly. The note on that measurement said it was with a four-cell battery.
The Studio XPS 13 is with a six-cell. So that's part of the weight, albeit a sliver, I would imagine. The rest of it, I don't know. I'm sure it's got better cooling as a result of the weight increase, but I'm not sure how I feel about five pounds in a 13" formfactor.
Sony z590 refresh, let's go. -
-
This is really hard. I keep struggling between the Studio XPS 13" or a Z-590. The Dell is much cheaper of course, but I loved how light-weight my SZ was when traveling or just around campus when I was in school.... :\
-
Thats are a hard choice.. Im a Dell and Sony fan. So ya... LOL
I would wait for Adamo and then decide. Adamo vs Z should be a good one. -
Have their been any more in-depth reviews?
-
I added the suggestion of Windows 7 for free or discounted price on ideastrom for people who buy vista after a certain date.

Make sure you vote yea or nay on it. -

But I guess this is a bit off topic... -
I will be sure to check it out.

How impressive is the RGB screen? I know that it can use 100% of the colors instead of 80% but is that a really noticeable difference? I could look up a picture of one but I think it would look like a regular led screen when displayed on a regular led screen.
I know it's subjective, but how much better on a scale of 1 - 10 is it?
1- "Oh my god that is so impressive I'm going to go out and buy twenty of them and say a prayer of thanks to every god that has every existed and send a very long (hand written) thank-you note to everyone alive."
5- Something that would be nice to have to watch a movie or to slightly improve gaming color and makes your interesting desktop come alive with unreal colors.
10- I thought it was another way for manufactures to gain $250 for something else that made no improvement. -
Before I pull the trigger on a 1640 I need to know this-has anyone installed ATi's reference drivers WITHOUT resorting to third party mods or the like-done it through device manager.
And if so, does everything work okay-particularly Blu Ray and games?
-
Hmmm....appears the $200 GC offer has disappeared like a winter ghost!!! I saw it when I had the XPS 16" in my cart at work......
Maybe it was a lure to get people in.......odians..... -
-
-
If you going to order, you can always call and place your order with your *saved cart* and see if the Rep will still give it to you.

Even before the public beta, the rumor was late 2009 - early 2010. -
I must say that these look quite nice, actually. Not my type of nice to pull me away from my Alienware, but kudos to Dell for making a pretty classy machine. Though the major dealbreaker was the fact that it had an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. I know that chip heats up faster than Gordon Ramsay blowing his top, running a kitchen full of incompetent chefs and being swamped with orders. I have personal experience with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 in the Gateway M-152XL, and compared to my current laptop, that was shocking. The fans ran full blast after 10 minutes of being on Vista. After around 30 minutes, the palmrests were a nasty mess of dried sweat since the palmrests got extremely HOT and when my hands sweated, it immediately dried into this salty white residue. I didn't really measure the temperature, but it was definitely hot enough to not want to put your finger on it for more than 1-2 seconds, but I got used to it after a while. I sincerely hope that Dell has put in an EFFECTIVE cooling system (yes, I'm looking at you, Gateway) to cope with the extra heat that this chip spits out.

I'm tempted to just order a XPS 1340 despite the lack of reviews and see how it is, if the weight's as bad as I'm thinking, etc.
Thirty day return policy, yes? Way back when, I had an M1330 but returned it due to the voltage regulation noise (the "whine" so many of us hated) - just couldn't stand it. Speaking of which, do you suppose the Montevina platform in these new XPSs will have that same issue? -
-
Cin. -
Is 115 F (46.1 C) really that hot? On another thread it says a laptop cpu should max at 85 C. Almost twice the Studio XPS 16's hottest spot.
(Perhaps undervolting would help a bit as well)
Am I missing something? -
No it's not. Thats perfectly fine.
-
Another stupid question: The coupons for Dell i currently have (10 % off, EUR 50 off, EUR 75 off) all don't work when configuring an XPS 16.
That's on purpose, right? I cannot find anywhere where it says "Savings don't apply to the new Studio XPS models" but since the coupons refuse to work, it must be written somewhere, no? Or am I doing something wrong?
Dell Studio XPS 1340/1640 now available for purchase on Dell's site !!!
