Don't really understand why people are saying that the 1640 is not a gaming laptop, with my below spec's, it should play anything at maxed settings, even with the 3670 512 video.

My 512MB NVIDIA Quadro FX 2500M on the 900K did.

    I maxed it out :D

I'm seriously checking out the 1640 but seem to be stuck in the same boat as a few people - I want a mid level screen resolution! Has anyone who has chatted up the Dell reps asked whether a 1600X900 screen is in the pipeline? And if so when?

Not for me, though I am used to carrying around a chunky 15.4 inch lappy, so anything is lighter than what I have now (except a 17in desktop replacement that is... :D ) I am seriously looking forward to when they start adding more customization options to the 1640 and the 1340.

I am in the market for a new laptop, but was planning on waiting till Windows 7 came out and maybe the mobile i7 chips to increase the power of a laptop I want to buy. Though I doubt Dell will be in any rush to put either of these on a laptop when they are released though.

you can get a much better gaming laptop for $3500.
i consider you will be using it for games as you got a maxed out one, right?

why not get a 17" alienware, m1730(wait for revise?, if thrs one), sager, gateway. and you could get it cheaper. i mean they iinclude dual 3870's and dual 9800gt's which are. they get 14000ish on 3dmark compared to 4000-5000.

Mine was like $1414ish or something, before tax and shipping, and that was with Blu Ray and a 2.53ghz/6MB CPU.

I mean I wish the GPU was a lot better. I'd pay hundreds more gladly for a 9800 class thing, or even a 9700GTS.

I didn't get an extra warranty though, as I sort of don't trust Dell anymore to honor it, and I guess I'll just hope for the best.

I honestly don't mind the Leather on the back. Won't wear any worse then plastic in my opinion. Plus as the rest of the lappy appears to be a fingerprint magnet, gives a place to hang onto without going all CSI on it with prints.

Could have done without it, but that it is there, doesn't bother me.

Plus, it goes with my Leather Chapps :twitchy:

Anyone ordering 1340 as a desktop replacement laptop? I mean plugging it into external display and doing some 1024x800 High Settings gaming ? I mean I have M860TU with 9800GTS which is really powerful however I realized I don't do as much PC gaming anymore (more 360, PS3). I just want to have portable powerful system (1340 packs powerful CPU and RAM as well as OK GPU) where I could still do some COD4 and similar system hungry games . Anyone with the same point of view?

I asked a Dell rep a couple of days ago and he said yes. I asked him when & he said he doesn't exactly know, but it would be in the "coming weeks". Now that could be next month or May. It makes sense that Dell would eventually offer screen resolutions that Sony & HP offer on their own 16" models. I also asked about the Blu-ray writer & 9-cell battery and he said "same story as the screen".

I wasn't thinking of asking about a matte screen option, but according to plasma, a matte option is available on Dell's Australian site. He thought it was a mistake. Maybe not...

I will be ordering 1340 as a desktop replacement that I plan to connect to an external monitor. But i'm buying it for work, not gaming, it would be ridiculous, it's not a gaming notebook at all.

    No SSD?

And btw, the 2500M is a lot better than the 3670. And you won't be maxing out modern games with the 3670 unless you scale down the resolution.

Can someone please receive one of these so we can end all this guessing about the GPU? Come on Dell :)

    This is what I'm considering:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 6MB Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista(R) Ultimate 64 bit SP1 Edition (English)
    6GB (1x4GB/1x2GB) 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Dell(TM) Backlit Keyboard with Touchpad (English)
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
    128GB Solid State Hard Drive
    Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
Hardware Maintenance 2-year XPS Premier Service with 1-year CompleteCover
    Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card
    Dell(TM) Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module
    16 " 1080p Full HD WUXGA (1920x1080) Anti-Glare RGBLED Display with 2.0MP webcam
    XPS-NB Handling & Insurance Charges(Australia)
Standard Delivery: Delivery 9am-5pm - Monday to Friday (excl. public holidays)

Total: $2781 USD (I know, the AU store is very cheap)

Yes, only gaming. The Alienware M17 seems to be the biggest winner maxed out at $4600.

The Dell seems very interesting as an all purpose notebook.,not sure I need both :)

Of course, the 2500M is based on the 7900M GTX, which I believe is faster than the 3670.

Most of the times Workstation cards are faster than their GeForce counterparts anyways.

    Look: 2500M is a 256bit 512MB GDDR3 GPU. The 3670 is only 128bit. that's a big difference.

Plasma - Sounds like you're close to taking the plunge with the 1640. If you do, could you drop us a note about whether the Anti-Glare RGBLED Display is a real option or an error on the AU Dell web? Thanks!

Yes, It may appear to be a waste of money at the maxed out version, however, for us buying one at the $1500-1800 (Taxes in) range, it is a steal. Decent game playability, form factor and included features, IMO.

I am with you - the 1340 is a mobile powerhouse. I can get by with less graphics power as the games I play aren't that demanding (COD4, The Witcher, NWN2, etc), and for everyday use it will be a screamer. I am going to add an Intel X-25M HDD and clean intall Vista when I get it which should make it a bit quicker as well.

Maybe there will be a "wood trim" option later, like the first pictures we saw in august.

I personally don't care about the leather.. but i'll hope one can upgrade/change it later if the leather begins to look ugly  :)

does anybody have a review for the 1340?

anyways, I think dell has done a good job with the design, but I still can't believe that they failed on the weight. I am very disappointed because this is supposed to be dell's top-of-the-line and they can't even get the weight down. Come on dell, even an inspiron 13's weight is near your 1340's !!!

i sent a message to a guy who works for dell on another forum the other day about the screen and this is the response.

The RGB LED screen (when you go in to customize it says 16 " 1080p Full HD WUXGA (1920x1080) Anti-Glare RGBLED Display with 2.0MP webcam [Included in Price]

yet on the info page it says has the only option being Edge-to-edge Glossy 16 inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p)...
which one is it? is there a matte (anti-glare type) display as this is what i am after...

    his response:

With the screen there is no matte finish screen. It only comes in the glossy finish.

so appears to be an error from what has been said
    cheers
    Greg

I posted this a while back ago. Other than this crude translation, there doesn't seem to be any in English reviews yet. I tried quite a few combinations of the Studio XPS 1340 name, and nothing came up except for this one and links to various Chinese forum posts about it.

Actually, the upcoming Adamo is their new top of the line, for 13 inchers anyways. But, i agree that close to 5 lbs is prob. too heavy for a high-end 13 incher in 2009... its packing a lot of hardware though and seems well built.

The Studio 15 was delivered to my house in exactly 1 week.

I am currently using a 6-year old Inspiron 1100. I order the Studio 15 2 days before the Studio XPS 16 came out. I received my Studio 15 exactly 1 week later (configured! wow!)

Needless to say, I immediately returned the Studio 15 and order the 16. I was hoping I'd get it in 1 week. But apparently, judging by this board...that won't happen! Hopefully I get it soon...can't wait to see someone unbox it.

Is the graphics card soldered to the motherboard on the 16, or is it like the older Inspirons were, and changeable?

Someone mentioned about their system shipping soon if they didn't cancel it... CAN you cancel it after it's already in testing or whatever? I thought you could only cancel if it was prior to it being built?

You're not going to be happy with it. I mean the 3670 in the 1640 is barely passable. The 1340's GPUs are just bad. I mean if you need a 13" notebook, but...

Well, I'm sure not getting a 1640 for the GPU :D

I don't know, I have such a 'weird' set of requirements I'm having to majorly compromise on the GPU. Other than that the 1640 seems perfect for me, and hopefully...well I have a big backlog of older games anyway (of course ATi's drivers tend to break older stuff from my experience)...umm...well hopefully this isn't a mistake.
