I dont think that the 1340s and the 1640s are all that bad, GPU wise. They can play most games, but not at high specs and they will accomplish everyday tasks at great speeds. I do agree that for the premium price that you are paying for these things, they should have tossed in a better GPU instead of the ones they have. With the GPU they have in it right now, I would have expected them to charge around the previous generations price. I myself am going to wait to see if they toss in better GPUs in the coming months.

I thought I was the only one who was playing their backlog of older games! I am still playing Starcraft and Total Annihilation with my friends at LAN parties and over the internet. Its still great fun!

I still haven't gotten to Warcraft 3...and I bought the collector's edition at launch! :D

    That's how bad I am. I've got...umm...Jedi Outcast, Elite Force 2, etc...

I've got to figure out some fairly modern game to play on this right away when I get it, to test it out, make sure it's stable and what not.

I'm not sure what though. I'm thinking it needs to be at least Farcry 1, or a Doom 3 engine game. Hopefully Doom 3 engine would be new enough to put it through it's paces...(?)

I've been watching some videos on Youtube ppl playing on COD4 on 9400m on high settings. Studio 1340 packing 9400m sli with 9200m should deliver 2x as much performance as single 9400m which should let you play COD4 and others at 1024x800 with High settings which is more than enough for me as I will be playing next gen on consoles. This is alright for me, the only bad thing about 1340 is the battery life, the chinese review states that 6cell only gives around 2h20min of battery life which is horrible knowing that "Hybrid" should give you "greater" battery life :(

I canceled my order for the 1640, if its still in production you can cancel it, the GPU makes no sense to me, I would only buy it maxed out.

    I ordered the Alienware M17, Maxed :D

Well, mine's STILL in testing. It's been in testing since at least Friday. I assume that means I can't cancel, and I don't know that I'd want to.

I don't know. The GPU is my only issue. I don't know for 100% sure if I can get ATi's regular drivers working (I will NOT use 3rd party modded stuff), and of course it's low end :-/

I figure theoretically it'll hold me over until at least when there are some higher end systems available with LED backlighting.

Buy the Studio 15 with the 3450. THAT is low end. I have a X700. THAT is low end. You know I'm sayin'? ;)

Thanks! Well, darn. I don't know

I just don't know what else to get besides this 1640. Everything else is at best roughly equally as powerful, and I love that Dell includes real OS CDs so it's easy to install fresh, etc.

Wish they'd let it have a 9800 GPU, or even a 9700GTS. I'd be REALLY happy with this system if it was shipping with a 9700GTS! :)

Are you sure that it's a WLED screen AND a 2.0 Mpx camera? Because WLED screens come only with 1.3 Mpx cameras? Can you confirm that?

Actually i don't know. If you build a XPS 13 at DELL's webiste it says the same.. I don't care about the camera... It says WLED on my order and that's what i care about. Why it also says 2.0 Mpx on my order is strange..., the tech spec at dells website says 1.3 Mpx camera on WLED

I waited since August 2008 (when the original thread before this one appeared) for the new Studio XPS laptops to appear. The huge disappointment that was the ATI 3670 video card in the 1640 caused me to look elsewhere. I ended picking up the Gateway P-7805u from Best Buy as it was only $1150 and came with the Nvidia 9800m GTS 1GB DDR3. If you hurry you could still find one with the 1920x1200 screen (though alas not LED backlit). This computer would probably appeal to anybody that was looking towards the 1640 for gaming purposes.

If you buy a system and it goes on sale within your return period, would Dell give you the difference on a gift card? I image they would because you could return it for being 'unsatisfactory' and just buy again. Has anyone tried that?

Well, your only option now is to accept it and return it for a 15% stocking fee, not cheap  or keep it.

I loved everything about the 1640 except the CPU.

Just chatted with a Dell sales rep, and he confirmed that while the 9400M is built in, the 9200M is actually a removable card that can be replaced in the future. I will wait for some reviews to confirm that as well, and if it's true, it's great news!!!

If you are not interested in a dedicated card, you wouldn't select it as an option in the first place. Just go with the integrated 9400M and don't opt for 9500, and you can save about $100 and don't have to worry about selling the card on eBay. That's simple :)

But yes, it means that you can remove it and sell it, if you want to.

lol.. nvr mind, GPU is not even an option in the Canadian site...

I was hoping to be able to get integrated graphics by removing the GPU. But, the seems the only option is for discrete graphics (soldered in place) with the option of a second card (removable). Although, this means that Canadian buyers should be able to just pop in another card for SLI action.

Be careful, I have spoken with many reps and all but one of them so far has given conflicting and/or wrong advice.

FYI - there are no instructions in the service manual for replacing the graphics card. Not saying it cannot be done (I really hope it can!), but I haven't seen any evidence that it is possible.

I think you are confusing something. I am talking about Canadian site as well (and actually, it doesn't matter, all countries got the same options). But let me clarify. On the GPU page there are two options: 9400M and 9500M (for additional $110 CDN). When you select the default (9400M) you are getting an integrated nVidia 9400M card, which is built in into the chipset (since it is an nVidia chipset, not an Intel chipset). However, if you select the 9500M, they are adding an additional nVidia 9200M video card. In Hybrid SLI mode, those two cards (9400 + 9200) create a combination which nVidia calls 9500M (so, 9500Mm is not a real card, but rather a virtual name).

    I hope that helps.

Hello everyone. Good to see alot of talk about these new dells . I just ordered the XPS 16 maxed out. The video card is a big concern for everyone I can see but will it be swappable? I upgraded my Dell E1705 Video card easily, so hoping this could be an option down the road.

    hi everybody.....

if I would choose between the 13 and 15 i saw that:

the 13 has a better ram (ddr3 1mhz) and processor type (1066MHz compared to 800MHz) but the 15" has a better vga as what notebookcheck says ( http://www.notebookcheck.it/Schede-g...st.2875.0.html - the 8600m GT is at the 60° place and instead the 9500m is at the 64°)

so..do you think there's a lot of differrence between the 9500m of the studio xps 13" and the 8600m gt of the xps 15"?

would you reccommend to choose the 13 or the 15 as an overall performance ram-vga-processor?

    thanks!

I'm just curious if the 3670 will remain the best GPU option for the life of the XPS 16 model (like with the 8600M GT on the M1530) or if a 4xxx is in its future?

I would be a little pissed if a better GPU became available a few weeks after I got my unit.

I'm very curious about why these systems are available only with Vista 64 in the US and only with Vista 32 in the UK. Is there some mysterious incomptability that we don't know about or are they just inconsistent?

I'll just wait for that...and for Windows 7... what do u guys think??
