Uhhh nice... I didnt know that. Thanks for the advice... I will do that as soon as Studio XPS 1640 is available in Puerto Rico.

Another question...which one do u recomend me??? Studio Xps 13 or 16...

    This is my problem...

I like ATI cards but since the 3670 is old now because there's the 4670. And I like the Hybrid Sly in the studio xps 13...but is too little.

Other thing is that I would like that the Studio XPS 16 comes with the P9500 because is fast but dont consume that much energy like the T9500.

But the things that make me stick with the 1640 instead of 1340 is the:

    1. Bluray
    2. I need the best resolution to work with photos and see Bluray
    3. Nice Audio

    What should I do?

Thanks for checking, that was helpful. I need a new laptop and I like the 1640, but am a little nervous about glossy screens in general after playing with a few models at Best Buy. As someone else in the forum so eloquently put it, I don't want to spend the day looking at myself. I don't know how to reasonably quantify this, but any first impressions on glare from those who become proud owners of their 1640s this week would be great. Thanks!

Is the BD option on the 1640 worth it to future proof your laptop? I'm not really into paying more money for a movie just for a clearer picture but I'm thinking that other things, such as games, will start to move to BD.
It it considered a good upgrade to help future-proof?

In my opinion, no. By the time that happens you will have at least another notebook or two.

Games won't be released on Blu-ray discs in the foreseeable future (if at all). If that's your only concern, you don't need it then. But if you want to watch movies, sure, get the Blu-ray drive too.

I agree. The likely hood that you will see blu ray discs used for games any time soon, is close to nill. While they may hold massive amounts of data, not too many people are willing to drop $200+ on a blu ray ROM for their computer, not when DVDroms are dirt cheap, even the best models. As a PC gamer myself, it doesnt bother me when a game ships on several DVDs.

I can see why the GFX is a worry. If u look at HP's in the same price range (pr even lower with coupons), there are already throwing the 9600's which I'd take in a heartbeat over the 3650.

I got a good deal on my XPS16 (plus the Dell giftcard will be used for a camera) but if I can't get much of my casual gaming out of the 3650, I'll probably end up returning it. My other alternative was the HDX18 which might be too big but I'll probably end up going with that if the XPS doesn't cut it for me.

Can't believe Dell went with a lower end GFX card for a 2009 premium model.

Yeah. I'd have gotten one of those if not for the florescent light. WAY better GPU, plus it's Nvidia, and it's even cheaper. But...one of my requirements is LED lighting :(

Well, I apparently am. At least I have you guys here to complain to if I hate it ;) You'd better stick around! :p

Yeah, did I say CPU? I mean GPU. Actually I really want a quad core, but realistically... But still, a 9800 class GPU shouldn't be that big of a deal, considering how cheap some of the laptops with them are!

Even if you could take it out and have the laptop still work, who would buy it?

There's no difference in performance between that RAM, as the faster stuff would have worse latency. ANd there's a HUGE difference between those GPUs. The 1340 doesn't have a 9500. It's really got an integrated 9400 and a 9200 in SLI. Under the best conditions it can't match an 8600GT. But why not look at the 1640? I'd rather have an Nvidia GPU, but other than that, the 1640's newer and actually was a lot cheaper for me.

Personally I'd never consider a computer (or whatever) without Blu Ray, but at this point that's 90% for TV/movies. I mean, if you like TV/film at all, you're going to want Blu Ray in as many places as you can get it. The upgrade's cheap too.

I would love to see a BD movie on the RGBLED 1080p screen.. but, i cant really justify the upgrade when already have a PS3 hooked up to my very nice TV.

Come on... the 3670 is faster than those DDR2 Ge9600 in hp laptops...

We're not talking about DDR2 3650 like the ones Dell put in studio 17 series. Those 3650 roughly score 3000 points @ 3Dmark06.

    We're talking about DDR3 3670, scoring 4800 @ 3Dmark06 (see NBR review). As I said before, better than DDR2 Ge9600, and 400 points below average DDR3 Ge9600.

'Guess that Dell had so many problems with 8600 that they didn't want to go on with nvidia and 9600 chip for their new baby (see Macbook Pro problems with 9600 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1767221&tstart=0, plus The inquirer articles about the cracking bump not resolved in 9600 chips http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer...e-macbook-pros-have-nvidia-bad-bump-material).
I was disappointed not to found ATI 4xxx in xps 16, but btw, 3670 should be just fine for me, and with all the previous 8600 mess, I'm happy Dell chose to go the ATI way.

Does anyone know when the ATI 4000 series is due out? Is it way off or just a couple months off?

Also, does anyone know how the 128GB SSD that comes with the XPS 16 performs?

It only took an extra week or so for them to be available in New Zealand and Australia though. I guess they're just targeting certain markets.

I was just about to purchase the studio xps 13 on the Canadian Dell website which i have been eyeing for the past month. I go to configure the laptop and when i get to the graphics option there is NO option for the 9500M!!!

What gives??? There is only one option the 9400M and nothing else. I checked yesterday and there was for sure still the option for the 9500M. I understand the 9500M is infact the hybrid sli option which is still btw stated on the studio xps 13 information page. What is going on?? I have been eyeing this laptop for a month and when i finally decide to buy it this happens?? I checked the US dell website and the 9500M option is still there. What happened to the Canadian site?

Anyone notice this yet and happen to know why?

No they didn't. On the US site, they just changed one of the base configurations to include an LED screen by default. You can still deselect it if you want.

Any chance that the 3670 will be replaced by a Series 4 later this year? That would make the 16 a pretty awesome piece of equipment.

    I found a review on XPS 16 (computershopper.com/laptops/reviews/dell-studio-xps-16)

    Here's little about the GPU

"The ATI GPU helped the XPS 16 deliver a score of 5,243 on Futuremark's 3DMark06 (at 1,024x768 resolution) and a Futuremark 3DMark Vantage score of 1,252 on the Performance preset, which blow other mainstream systems out of the water but are below average for desktop replacements, which include high-end gaming rigs. In real-world use, however, you should get at least some gaming enjoyment out of the machine. We saw a decent 29 frames per second (fps) on F.E.A.R. at 1,400x1,050 resolution, though we had to drop back to 1,280x800 on the more demanding Company of Heroes test to get a playable 31.3fps."

More info would have been good :-/ Like is that in Direct X 10? If so, a bit over 30fps at a reasonable resolution is maybe not too terrible. Not impressive, but not worthless.

That's interesting. In Germany, not too far from the UK ;), the xps 16 comes with Windows Vista 64 only...

    Betriebssystem
Original Windows Vista® Ultimate x64 Edition
Original Windows Vista® Home Premium x64 Edition

But then again, it says the same thing on dell.co.uk's website:

    Operating System
Genuine Windows Vista® Ultimate x64 Edition
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium x64 Edition

Where did you find the 32 bit system?

They did just double the price of the 128GB SSD option on the Studio XPS 13, on the New Zealand site though. I know because I ordered one the other day and that drive costs about $400NZ ($213US) more now. Could be a mistake, but I'm glad I ordered already. It's ridiculously espensive now.

the main problem is that I will use the new notebook also for 3d graphics...and a lot people told me that ati has several problems with programs such as maya or xsi slowing dow a lot the usage even if you got the latest drivers

so I'm not 100% sure that the 1640 would be the best thing for me :(

The main question would be the interface of the graphics card. If its like the Studio 15, with an MXM slot, its easily upgradable when the Series 4 cards are available. If its like the Inspiron 1520, which has a special slot, not MXM compatible, its up to Dell.

Or it could be soldered into the motherboard as the XPS 1530.

You're right, I hadn't looked at the 'tech specs' page that tells you that, but something's not right because it says you can get 8GB RAM, which it doesn't actually let you configure. I'd only noticed the 'configure' pages which don't say 64-bit (neither do they say 32-bit, but elsewhere Dell seem to take absence of a specification to mean the 32-bit version) so my mistake there. I also assumed this was why they don't let you specify more than 4GB RAM in the UK.

Mine's been in 'testing' since Friday? Thursday? (Does that mean it was on fire that whole time? :D  ) But I just called (why isn't this available on the web?) and it's in boxing now! Maybe yours really is sitting there waiting for us late comers :D

On the 1640, will the 512MB vid card be powerful enough to play upcoming games like Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 from blizzard (or even a semi-older game like Supreme Commander)? I have seen some probable system requirements and seem like it will, but wanted a second (or third) opinion.

These are the only PC games coming out in the future that I have any desire to play :D

As a side note, has anyone tried playing Starcraft and Total Annihilation on a Vista or Windows 7 beta machine? How did it turn out?

WORD OF WARNING IF YOU ORDERED DELL 1640 with RGBled LCD screen.

You may want to check your order on the Dell site.

My story: On Jan. 9th, I placed my order for the 1640 and went with the $250 RGBled LCD screen. They sent me an email confirmation of the order that I had placed and it was correct. It showed the upgraded screen.

On Mon. Jan. 12th, I copy and pasted my Dell order to a friend. That's when I noticed that my Dell order on the website stated WLED LCD not RGBled screen. And they still charged me the $250 premium.

On Jan. 12th I called Dell and they told me that the only thing they could do is to cancel my order and re-submit a new order.

So, It is now in production and I have a ESD of 1/29.

    Thraak

p.s. I just heard that Leo Laporte also ordered this swanky leather laptop.:GEEK:

update on studio xps 13 on Canadian Dell website

The 9500M option is still missing on the studio xps 13 on the Canadian website, so today I called them up and the representative told me the 9500m is not listed on the site anymore but he doesn't know why. He said he could manually add the 9500M (hybrid sli) to my order after i ordered it. So I followed his instructions and he indeed added the 9500M to my order. Yay! Here's hoping I receive the studio xps with the hybrid sli.

    Awesome news for you! :D

Once you the email stating it's shipped your pretty much *good to go*~! You can even call Customer Care at that time to get the tracking number, if it's not availi' yet on the site! :D

    Weird,

Dell US had a $75 instant savings this morning and suddenly it is gone.

Still no word on the P9600 CPU.

It will be more than enough for SC2 and DB3. Blizzard has a development policy that their releases must work for the mass. They are not in the business to wow you with the latest and greatest shader work. They're in the business to wow you with gameplay.
