I agree!! I want 1340 coupons =(. So, my friend uses the 1330 and I used it during lunch for a bit and I don't know...I don't like it much. The keyboard is not cushioned from the screen so there were marks on the screen. Also, the touchpad felt a little small and the keyboard was too far in. Just seemed the palm rests were a little too big. Looking at the styling of the 1330 and 1340, the 1340 looks a lot nicer--at least from the pictures of the 1340 since no one has seen it in person yet! The 1330 WAS fast though so the speed was not an issue and it was very light which is also nice. I'm leaning toward the 1340 now haha. =(

I'd go with the 320GB 7200RPM for now and maybe with the release of Windows 7 pop in a intel SSD. Hopefully prices will drop soon.

This is my exact plan, I just wish my order would get to boxing.

I was wondering if it's worth getting the 128GB SSD or the 320GB 7200 RPM?

Will the SSD be faster than the 320 in read time (for OS, programs, & boot time)?

I'm not concerned about battery life or heat as it will be a desktop replacement.

    Thanks!

If it were me, I would get the 320GB 7200RPM. You can upgrade to a SSD later when the prices drop. You would save yourself some money in the long run.

From what I hear, dont know if its true though, the SSD that Dell is offering is slower than the 320GB 7200RPM hard drive. How much, I dont know.

Those enquiring about the $200 Dell GC offer....that was a lure for the early adopters (I'm sure there are plenty here :) , incl me) and it paid off, I think.

From what the CSR told me, that offer was valid for 48-72 hours upon the XPS 13/16 release.

When I called Dell, I had just missed that but after a lengthy 30 min talk, I was given a $140 instant discount AND a $100 GC as well :D .

I've watched quite a few videos of PPL playing games like COD4, Bioshock or HL2 on it with almost high settings on 1280x900. HL2 seems to run stupidly fast on 9400m, COD4 is good as well, thats all I need. I won't be playing any upcoming games on PC I'll use console for that. As long as I can play the above and BF2 as well as BF2142 its awesome for me! (I'm only talking about 9400m cause I'm not sure how sli would perform [ you showed that it doesnt give much improvement] but maybe NBF will release some good drivers allowing to score 3k or more in 3dmark06. Thx

Hm, how did you convince them haha? Were those discounts in addition to others like EPP/Dell credit line or are those not able to be stacked with instant discounts and gift cards? I get 11% off online with 1340 but if I don't get that on the phone and I'd have to convince them to give me the money off, it might not be worth it to do it on the phone. I think I do get 10% off with EPP on the phone though. Do you think I can get even more discounts on the phone?

In that case l would order it with 320 GB 7200rpm and replace it with an SSD in half a year (or a year) or so... For now an SSD is faster than 5400rpm drives, but still slower than 7200rpm drives.

I have been doing some research for you and I think they have a read time above a 5400 RPM, but not nearly the same read times as a 7200RPM, but the write times are a bit slower.

The new intel SSDs though, on the other hand, are just as fast as a 7200RPM in read and write. Some sites have said even faster.

The 128gb Samsung SSD in the SXPS are 90/70MBs read/write; with 0 access times and no issues with fragmented files.

Hmm, i'm not so sure about that, it depends on the manufactor.
I did some heavy research about this and ordered ssd. If 256 GD SSD was available i would order that without any questions, but i'm upgrading in a couple of months or when windows 7 is released.
Samsung 128 GB are faster than the 7200gb hdd. The 256GB SSD are twice as faster than the 128GB (and also a little faster than Intels x25)

Why are you saying that 7200rpm drives is faster than Samsung SSD that Dell is offering? Are you sure about that? IMO SSD is faster..

Can anyone tell me is it worth getting a:

    Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo P9500 ( 2.53GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1067MHz FSB)

    for extra £100 ?

How does 2.53 compare to 2.4Ghz 3MB Cache ? Does it improve a lot in gaming (fps) and everyday tasks ( in what %).

I will also be getting 7200rpm 320Gb hard drive if that makes a difference with different CPUs. Cheers

Hmm, so it seems that the intel x-25m is the SSD to get. Am I the only one a little bit wary of the limited number of memory writes per memory block? I understand that 5 years is quite a long time for a laptop hard drive, but still. It says it will last that long for the typical user, but anyone who reads these forums isnt a typical user. The Intel X-25m, according to the site, writes at over 250mbs a second. Wont that affect the life of the SSD dramatically?

Just an off question, but if SLC is supposed to be so much better than MLC, why is the Intel x-25m using MLC? Dont get me wrong, its still the SSD to beat, but when you are paying that much for a SSD, why not get the best tech in it that allows for the most amount of writes possible?

I mentioned the typical stuff going on right now with the bad economy and the maximum I could actually afford on my Dell DPA card and that this is my second XPS purchase from Dell and blah, blah blah :D ..I also missed the GC deal only by 2 days so they 'let me in' after some persuasion. The additional 3% discount was already on their website (for using the DPA card) so I pushed for that and they honored that as well.

It's a phone call and u've got nothing to lose (maybe 30 mins of your time but that's it).

People ordering 1340 what CPU did you go for and why ???

    2.4Ghz 3Mb or
    2.5Ghz 6mb

    I can't make up my mind :(

Also is 2.5Ghz more power hungry ?

Any idea if Intel plans to release capacities of the Intel X-25M, larger than 80GB? I understand that is a decent amount of space, but I would love to have something like a 256GB capacity like the current SSD dell is offering on the XPS line. Of course, the more capacity I can get the better. I want enough space to keep my most important stuff with me at all times.

    Guys,

Dell is offering $125 off automatically to EPP members for the XPS Studio 13 if you order online. My discount is now about $307 total ordering online with this discount plus the 11% EPP discount. The config is the P9500/128 gig SSD/LED/9500M one and I will pay $1500 before tax and shipping. You think I should jump on it? I'm about to click submit if no one objects!

2.5GHz is not *more* power hungry, both chips are 25W and 2.4 vs 2.5 is not a significant difference. 3MB of chache should be enough, but if you do lots of audio/video editing, encoding, or otherwise put load on CPU, and if you have money, then get the P9500 or in the future P9600 (which Dell does not offer yet) :)

This discount definitely helped tip me over to the 1340 haha since I'll be paying just slightly more for this than the 1330. I just hope it's a good computer. I've had some issues with Dell in the past which is why I've had an HP but I think the company has hopefully gotten better in the meantime! Any other opinions on the price before I submit?

Still in the boxing stage, but I was just wondering if there were any tweaks or other things I could do once I got my shiny new laptop to make it hum a little swifter? I know that all dells come with ridiculous bloatware, and I'm going to go with that idea whenever my sxps arrives, and vista is somewhat difficult, from what I've seen.

I dunno about that. I would define "ridiculous bloatware" as a Sony Vaio.

Once upon a time, when I CTO'd my XPS M1330, I just elected to keep MS Works and security software off the laptop at the time of the order. There wasn't a whole hell of a lot of detritus pre-installed, unless I'm forgetting a whole lot of things.

At least not in comparison to what it could've been.

First of all, I think you confused something -- "ridiculous bloatware" is on Sony, not Dell. And besides, Sony will charge you $50 if you want a "clean" system, without their <strike>soft</strike>blotware installed. Now that's ridiculous!!!
But anyways, the first thing you always do when you buy a new computer is reinstall the operating system yourself. So, reformat the drive, repartition it if needed, and then reinstall the OS. It solves the mentioned "blotware" problem, if you are afraid of it.

My VAIO did come with a ton of bloatware, nothing, that couldnt be removed or taken care of... if youre doing a clean install anyways, then it doesnt really matter how much bloatware there is since its all going to be wiped.

The SXPS16 doesnt have a no-bloatware option on the Canadian site.

Every manufacturer pre-installs their software as a way to promote themselves, and i don't blame them for that. But charging $50 for a no-bloatware system makes users mad.
I always do a clean reinstall, since simply disabling or even uninstalling their crap doesn't always help. Besides, before a clean reinstall I also repartition my drive, so I have a C: drive for the system, D: for documents, etc. That way I can better handle defragmentation, etc. and the system works much better/faster. I can always reformat/reinstall my system without having to move my documents to other drives (even though I do backups anyways). So, only uninstalling or using Msconfig to disable stuff is not enough for me.

I'm having second thoughts about ordering =(. I'm wondering if I should just keep using the tablet I have and suck it up despite its slowness because it is small and light. I kind of want to wait to see Adamo or Windows 7 so I don't have to deal with Vista. I have the beta for Windows 7 so I suppose I can use it instead of Vista but I don't know...it's definitely a good deal with the discounts but without any solid reviews it might be a bust.

I understand...I like the 1340..but am holding out for the Adamo 13. But looks like thats gonna be a bit before it's finally released, now. :(

I say go with what your heart is telling you to do. :D

It's too bad there are not any user reviews out on the 1340 yet :(

Thanks for the support Cin, I am impatient and add to that i didnt get some of the deals mentioned here because i forgot to look here before ordering. So most likely i will be out of town on business next week when it arrives  Im prob more upset with me then the process of waiting.

I will be happy when it arrives. I should go put a new leaked version of OS on my Blackberry Storm and burn my frustrations there.

but wouldn't a more basic system ship faster, as it is easier to assemble?

No worries! ;) I think we all start to get somewhat impatient whilst waiting on our laptop's to arrive..It's normal.

And, if you are seeing others are receving their's and you ordered before..it just adds to the frustration ;) It's cool..Soon, you will receive it ~ just think of it that way.

    Cin ;) :)
