The Dell Studio XPS 1340 and 1640 are great notebooks, but the design is a nuisance.

This is supposed to be an entertainment notebook, however, I don't see why Dell continues to use glossy plastic in their designs. It attracts dirt, smudges and fingerprints and it is not practical.

When are they ever going to use matte plastic or have the notebook be completely made out of some sort of metal?

They should also make the notebook more customizable by offering more options for configurations.

Awesome! :D Remember, you can call and get your tracking number from the Rep. Otherwise, you should see it in the AM :D

The EPP...is Employer Purchase Plan...I think, you can get it in the UK as long as your employer provides it as a benefit. Most larger corporations have it.
    As, do schools/Uni's :D

EPP gives you additional savings on notebooks, etc. It's a separate site outside of Dell's home site.

You have to have an EPP access ID to get to the site for the savings. ;)

It's separate from the Dell Main site. :)

Many companies justify their glossy notebooks by claiming that they are "durable." It's like aluminum and magnesium alloy doesn't exist...This is the reason many business notebooks have a certain advantage in terms of build-quality and design.

I wouldn't mind paying more for a better design. But, what can you expect from Dell?

P.S. The RGB LED Display is a big improvement though, despite it being glossy and reflective...

Exactly. I think they purposely force people into buying glossy so that they look like crap in no time and people will want a new system again. Would it hurt them to simply add an option (that even costs more) for a matte system or carbon fiber or anything but gloss.

Dell seems to have significantly increased the price of the 1340 in Australia. It was AUD$2299 (US$1500) yesterday for an almost maxed out spec, now it's AUD$2680 (US$1750) for the same config.

The Australian store was a little too cheap for Dell, I guess. :(

Excellent news! I called and the lady at EPP gave me 10% off EPP discount (up from 7%) with 4% Dell Credit line discount PLUS $125 off. That made the 1340 purchase $1463 without tax. I'm in Nashville with 9.25% tax so the tax sucks but before tax it's good. She also gave me free shipping. It has P9500/LED/128 SSD/2500M/BT. She emailed me the quote. I wonder if I can negotiate some more haha. Is this deal worth going after or should I keep trying to negotiate?

By the way, EPP customers get 10% off on phone orders, which is how I got it, so make sure to try to get it.

At 9:17 p.m this evening, my 1640 arrived at the Fedex depot here in Orlando. Tomorrow will be a great day to play.

Anyways, I was just online reading the manual for this laptop. I didn't realize that they are offering a inboard TV tuner card. It says that it is an option. If anyone wants to check out the patches, manuals, removing and assembling... etc. for theirs, they can go to:

    Log on to your account.
    Click on your purchase ID
    Click on your order number
    Click on Invoices
This will bring up your receipt and your system service tag will be on the bottom.

Enter that in the Support Section of the website.

Haha thanks. It would make the computer $1260 before tax which is CHEAP for that configuration. I guess I'll just tell the person tomorrow that the lady was about to give me the $200 but then we got cut-off and I couldn't call back, which is true. Now I won't buy the laptop until I get that discount seeing as I could have gotten it!

Sorry, I just checked it out and it states "Regional Upgrade" so that may not be offered everywhere. It looks like we Americans may have to use the Hauppauge win-tv express card.

I've never used them, but I have been researching the different ones from the company named "Hauppauge". http://www.hauppauge.com/. They have all different types. Some even have DVR capabilities but I'm not sure how good that would be. I've heard that a standard DVR does alot better. I would just use it to watch HD ATSC content (over the air HD) at times.

It may work okay for me because I'm 3 miles from the T.V. towers.

I told the lady I have an item code for the certificate and that I wanted to use it. At first she couldn't find the actual item number in the system but after trying like 5 different places she eventually found it and said it was still active. I just hope I don't have to go through all that trouble again tomorrow or I will be mad. The item number can be found on page 209 I think. Good luck!
