So Is the Studio XPS 13 a higher or lower quality product than the XPS M1330? because they are direct competitors.
I would imagine that DELL will have an overload of returned unwanated XPS M1330's from recent buyers seeing this news about the new Studio XPS 13.
So if anyone is looking or a very slightly used XPS M1330 I would imagine DELL's Outlet page for refurbished Laptops will be well stocked. -
I would say Studio XPS 13 is the higher quality product than the XPS M1330. On the slides, they stated about high quality.
Who really knows though, until buyers get to test it out. -
based on price I think you are right, now if I can see some specs on the Studio Xps 16 so I can send back my 1737 with in my 21 days.
I want DDR3 and NVIDIA graphics -
-
Confirmed DDR3 on the Studio XPS 1640.

This also confirms I am sending back my now 6 day old Studio 1737 (otherwise excellent) now outdated laptop on Monday. Phew thankyou 21 day holiday return policy.
This is the fastest any laptop has been made obsolete in history. -

im surprised dell ultimately went with nvidia but still we dont know nothing
with the Nvidia Fiasco that dell had to go through i thought they would have looked at ATI instead hmm who knows.....come on dell 4670 in the 13" and 4850 in the 16"
Another observation is there seems to be alot of air holes in the bottom of this notebook and its bigger something interesting is definitely in there... -
still shocked on the Studio XPS 13 Adamo
Studio XPS 13
Screen Size: 13.3" LED
Starting Weight: 4.85 lbs (2.19 kg)
Starting Price: $1,406 +Tax
no thanks
I still have hope DELL can justify this because the 13 Adamo uses the newest Nvidia Ion chipset.
and the Studio XPS 1640 used GDDR3 RAM for GRaphics and uses Nvidia's new 40nm die process. Which would give it a serious battery life boost.
over the current 55nm ATI chpsets -
That's not the Adamo....
-
If they have ddr3 on Studio XPS 16 then hopefully it will be same with Studio XPS 13.
-
-
No pictures of the Adamo have come out yet.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/20/dell-malaysia-nabs-a-studio-14-laptop-before-the-rest-of-us/
Dell Malaysia Studio 14 looks nice DELL has gone laptop crazy. (or decided to repackage the Inspiron E1405 with newer components) and a Fancy Studio design on the back.
Note to self: never buy another laptop ever again in either November or especially December.
DEll now has a Studio 13,14,15,16, and 17 I will patiently hold my breath for the Studio 18 by Valentines Day 09
and don't forget the nice little Mini 9 and 12 -
The thing that sucks about the Studio 14 is that it uses the old chipset and CPUs. Why bother Dell? What are they thinking?
-
-
With a down-turning economy DELL is responding by releasing Higher priced laptops?
and poorly positioned products? Seriously a Studio 14 ? whats the Demographic?
people who can't afford a Studio XPS 13, or a Studio 15?
do some market research. Or are they just pumping out cheap stuff and try to flood the market.
HP, Lenovo, and Acer are gonna eat DELL's Lunch
So DELL is making a play for higher tier with Apple'esqe Studio XPS line (with an emphasis on fit and finish) those are Dell's words.
They are playing it all wrong. Pretty soon what will keep them alive is the Business sector and Government. -
Unlike Apple, Dell has lower cost options. Is there a point to your rant?
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
actually what dell is doing is smart they are offering niche products(adamo) Gaming/mulimedia computer(Xps studio) and cheap produts(Inspiron, Studio series) they fill every single need for the consumer
-
Number 2 in the most popular laptops is Sony Z. -
Oh the Adamo is supposed to be thinner than Apple's Air just read up on that. How Dell wants to have an iconic product which gains world wide headlines. Kinda like how the MacBook Air made everyone say WOW!.
I seriously hope Dell keeps trying to sell Laptops and not try and sell me a "lifestyle" -
Dell sells a lot of laptops, they aren't putting all their eggs in one basket.
-
Yeah I have so Overlooked the Sony's having recently used a TT and Z series at a store in my Downtown area, all I can say is wow. Fit and finish are tight, better than apple or at least equal to. No flex at all and sturdy no creaks. Feels like it could survive, more than a few drops onto hard surfaces.
where as my 1737 while well built doesn't feel like it could survive a drop onto my soft bed or even carpeted floor without flying into several pieces. -
where did you read that it's thinner than the macbook air? That'd be pretty hard to do seeing how macbook air is so thin that it can't even put any ports on there. I think they wanted a macbook air killer, kind of like the Lenovo X301 and the VooDoo one (btw, x301 is one of my favorite laptops, it's just perfect)
-
Now that I think about it he said it being thinner than the MacBook Air, then my assumption that it would be based on Nvidia's new Ion chipset would be right on point.
Heck if its using Nvidia's Ion that would be huge news right there. -

I have a question for those who have dell laptops with capacitive sensor media buttons. Since they are replacing regular buttons, I just want to know something.
If your laptop has an capacitive sensor button for wifi (on/off); 1) Does it work with software or without, meaning if you install whatever os, will it still be functional? 2) If for example you have wifi on or off, does it stay that way whenever you turn the laptop on/off or do you have to turn it on/off every time?
I ask this because most of us want dell to put a switchable button for the dual graphics instead of switching in windows and since there's only 2 visual buttons/switch from the pictures (one being power).
Thanks! -
sony has a switchable button thats why they can average 6 to 8 hour battery.
If I'm on battery I'd switch to onboard graphics, If I'm plugged in I would max out the Nvidia GPU with a flip of a switch
But it should be a physical switch like the WiFi switch. -
It would be great if it the new dell has the a button/switch like the sony, since it would be much more reliable then software. -
2. It stays that way even if you turn your computer off, you don't need to re-enable or re-disable it. -
What laptop do you have that you have to press Fn+F2 to toggle it on or off. Have you installed another windows to see if it works?
It's very interesting actually. I believe even if you don't install any software, the drivers are already installed/preloaded for Fn+ functions. That's why if anyone reloads their laptop with a fresh copy, the Fn+ doesn't work until you install the software/drivers.
Yet since you say it stays that way if you toggle it on/off when you shutdown/start laptop, then it also acts as a normal mechanic switch unless it just stores it in memory.
LOL, I am confusing my self but I hope you/anyone can get what I am trying to say and find out. -
At this moment i have:
Acer TravelMate 2480
Dell Latitude D630
Dell Latitude C640
Dell Inspiron 8600
Dell XPS m1330
Since you asked about that, i specifically described Inspiron 8600, which uses Fn+F2 to toggle WiFi on and off. Formatted the hard drive, installed Windows, of course installed drivers for WiFi. Other than that, no special software installed, and no software is running on the background or sitting in the system tray to support that functionality. That's purely drivers. -
The only thing about driver based functions like capacitive sensor button or Fn+F2 when it comes to wifi/hybrid graphics is that I don't think it completely turns it off/on. For example if you have laptop with a wifi switch, when you switch it off, I THINK it completely turns it off (power) and that's why it won't ever transmit anything even while booting up. I would guess same with hybrid graphics like sony z line.
Where as with driver based, I don't think that it completely turns off wifi even if you toggle it off with Fn+f2, i don't know if it might still transmit signal while booting or etc.
That and the fact that it's driver/os dependent.
That's what I am trying to find out and get educated, that's why with all the questions. -
I have an Inspiron 8600c, needs an upgrade, that's why I'm here, and the Fn+F2 button always works, be it Windows XP, Linux or even in BIOS.
-
At 5am before I was going to sleep, I was still thinking about this LOL. I think it depends how they implement it.
If integrate the Fn+/capacitive sensor function through the bios, it should work no matter what os you install and you SHOULDN'T install any drivers for fn functions (just wifi). However there are laptops where you need to install manufacture drivers in order to make the fn+ work in fresh installs, I don't like it that way.
I am also doubting my opinion about the driver based not being able to fully shut power, I just thought about how windows/os turns off the computer without actually pressing the power button/switch again.
So technically if they do it right, when you toggle Fn+ or the new senor buttons it should actually turn it off without just disabling it. So who knows though, I am just confused lol.
After doing so many searches though, I did came across one thread/post in another section where the post stated that with the capacitive sensor button (not fn+), he HAD to WAIT till windows loaded until he turned wifi off. That is exactly what I don't like, and all this mess I am trying to find out. -
@sonny
Why are you even worried about that? Are you turning it on and off so often that you need special mechanism for that? -
It started from there. -
LOL already have problems with the bios before it's released, now that's pro
-
Yeah that's not good. Hopefully it's not good number of patches, but who knows. It didn't mentions xps studio 13, hopefully that means it's not effected.
-
That's not a problem, just an annoyance.
Besides:
1. BIOS can be easily updated - just download the next revision;
2. The computer is not even released yet - stop panicking!. -
I found some of the new Dell Studio XPS 13 pictures!
I can not put a link of the site because I newbie, but found this on engadet -
it's not a big differnece betwen the actual studio line.
-
Bet it looks even better in red!
(NO I am not addicted to red...I just like the color on the lappys)
A really pretty *slate* like blue color, would be sweet!

So how much longer do you guys think we'll have to wait? I mean it was suppose to be November, then they briefly added to the website.
I am hoping some time next week -
...I would say just after the first of the year!
Just because of how things have been playing out!

-
It looks good though. Hopefully it gets released next month with lots of upgrade options. -
Very sleek, sophisticated design i'll be looking at the 16inch version of this aswell the hp hdx16 when i look to upgrade next year hopefully it uses a nvidia gpu.
-
I think the new studio's will use Ati Graphics and I hope they do so because even the 9 Nvidia series have overheating problems.
Dell Studio XPS 1340/1640 now available for purchase on Dell's site !!!
