It's the Adama that will take 2 months. We still don't have a date for the XPS. It could be any time. Even tomorrow.

Dell normally announces new products on their web site on Monday (I mean that flash area with 3-4 slides). I expect to see XPS 13 announced this coming Monday on US site, and in a week on Canadian site. And available for pre-order. Yeeeeeah!

XPS 1340 (4.85 lbs / 2.19 kg) vs XPS 1330 (3.97 lbs / 1.8 kg). That's a 0.87 lb / 395 g increase! Guys, what do you think adds to that weight? Video card? More metal in chassis? Better battery (9-cell) in base configuration? Something else?

I have had a chat with a sale sep. and this is the answer:

"Marco, looks like its been mislabeled but it should be the XPS 1530" (referring to the Xps Studio 13)

It sounds pretty strange to me
The spec are COMPLETELY different and the price too, for this reason I think that it IS the real Xps Studio 13 and if I am right it will be out very soon, I think within a week ;)

So what are the new rumored Specs on the new.

XPS Studio 16. Is this why the current XPS 15 line has been removed from DELL's website.

I have until the 28th to send back my 1737

I can't wait until we get the full specs. It's true that it has dedicated/internal graphics right? I want to know what card they got in it, hopefully it's powerful enough.

That's a good question and if that weight listed is accurate, that's going to be a sore spot for a lot of people. Carbon fiber would have been this notebook's friend. Well, maybe not your wallet's friend, but anyway it's too heavy.

On second thought, maybe heat won't be a problem this time, so maybe it's worth it.

If the increase in thickness is for a sturdier frame and better heat managment, it's definitely worth it!

If they can cram in at least a 9500M GS, I'll be a very happy man! A 9600M GT would be ideal though!

Well I found that Dell will intruduce Studio XPS in CES 2009. If u know spanis then you can understand this completely. I will translate the most important part of it.

    here's the link:

    http://www.xataka.com/2008/12/19-dell-studio-xps-13-inminente

    The site says:

"Además del Dell Adamo, la empresa americana presentará para el CES 2009, salvo sorpresa , su esperado Dell Studio XPS 13, que según su plan de ruta tendría que haber salido al mercado en noviembre."

    English:

In addition to the Dell Adamo, the American company Dell will present in CES 2009, the waited Dell Studio XPS 13, that should be out at november.

    The site says:

"Ya conocíamos que llevaría un teclado iluminado, teclas multimedia táctiles (capacitivas) y que los materiales serían de primera."

    English:

We already know that will have backlid keyboard, multimedia tactile key and premium materials.

No. Since the specs aren't released yet, nothing has been set in stone, esp. the kind of graphics card that'd be used. But I see the 9600M GT as a must, at least for the 16, and it's hard to find a ATI counterpart for that particular card.

So IMO unless Dell prefers ATI cards of lesser performance such as the HD2600, which would be illogical, we'll most likely see nVidia cards on the Studio XPS.

Yeah I would prefer a nvidia card as well. I think they will put a GT card on the 16 easily, it would be too good if it's on the 13. Who knows though, anything is possible until we get the specs, maybe that's one reason for the added weight.

If it has a nice graphics card, I have finally found my new laptop. Switchable graphics, back lit keyboard, hdmi.

I wish manufactures would have buttons to switch between discrete/internal rather then through software, but I won't complain. Hopefully we could enable/disable it via software in xp if we wanted to.

So the Studio XPS is replacing the Studio line or the XPS line or both ?

I am Happy with my Studio 17 but if 30 days from now they have announced a 16 inch Studio XPS with better graphics and DDR3 RAM, I don't know what I'll do.

IF they are indeed phasing out the current XPS line, then yes the new STudio XPS line will have a level up better GPU graphics card either from ATI or NVIDIA regardless of which it will be significantly better than the current ATI 3650, But below the High End XPS offerings.

Studio XPS= XPS Light or XPS Lite

Do you really trust windows to do anything right? especially, switching between the video devices? If you've ever had to deal with windows' stupid alt-tab/resolution changing and directX device reset you wouldn't want windows to touch anything that complicated. Give me a hardware switch. Thank you very much.

I have a question for you guys. I am not computer savy like you guys and I don't need all the fancy stuff the new line will have.

I want to buy a XPS 1530, and like some people mentioned, the Dell website they did not list it, they listed the new Studio XPS. So I was wondering if you guys have any idea if they will just stop selling the m1530 or will they try to get rid of all of them and maybe at a very good price?

I just don't want to miss out on it because by the look of it the new stuff is going to be really expensive! And I want a 15 inch screen.

Well that's exactly why I want it to have a switch bad. With a hardware switch, it won't matter what os we are using. I am hoping they will go the sony z route but more likely the ibm software route.

i think with my known fortune telling skills (i'm just kidding) i can tell you that the studio xps 13 won't have a powerful graphics card because Dell has NEVER been the pioneer of bringing power to a smaller form factor. Instead, it will be a hybrid with 9400 GT and maybe the 9400 chip from the macbooks.

It is also heavier because this isn't an XPS laptop people. Even with all the overheating, everybody fell for the sexiness and the thinness. This is more like a studio, look at all the angles and edges. This laptop is huge and with that it has better heat dissipation, but like the studio laptop we have currently, I have a hard time believing Dell will bring powerful electronics to the small form factor.

As far the graphics card for the XPS 16, the options are fairly limited.

Jayson's slide showed us it was going to use hybrid SLI, so according to nvidia's page, they have to be a 9000 series cards.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybridsli_notebook.html

The integrated will pretty much have to be 9100M G, 9400M G (macbook), or new nvidia chip (not likely). Unfortunately, nvidia does not list 9400M G on the site.

It is most likely the 9400M G, it is known that five vendors have signed onto the 9400M G.
    http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/23/geforce-9400m-to-hit-notebooks-from-five-major-vendors-mock-int/

We know two of them, Apple and Sony. So there are still three unknown vendors, but one is likely Dell due to the aforementioned Hybrid SLI on Jayson's slide.

On the dedicated side, one can eliminate cards on the high and low end.

Scratch the 9800M GTX, GT, and GTS for competing with Alienware. Take this with a grain of salt though, the current XPS M1730 when fully upgradged competes with the Alienware m17x. However, the price on the 16 would have to be around USD$1800+ since the card cost a lot. Additionally, this would mean the XPS 16 is an MXM compliant since those cards only come in MXM modules.

Scratch the 9800M GS and 9650M GT, only used by Asus.

    On the low end:
Scratch 9200M GS, 9300M GS, 9500M G, 9600M GS, as being less powerful than current xps m1530. The 9600M GS would be more powerful with GDDR3, but the difference is marginal at best.

Scratch the 9650M GS, only used by Acer. These lower clocked cards in general 9800M Gs, 9650M GS, generally only used by the taiwanese manufacturers.

This leaves the 9600M GT, 9700M GT and GTS. The 9700M GT is only used by Acer and Asus, so I consider it less likely, but I can't really justify it.

The 9700M GTS is used by Toshiba and Asus, so it possible, the 9600M GT is very likely as it is the successor to the 8600M GT. Additionally, the 9600M GT has a very high inventory and manufacturing capacity, so it is very likely.

There is one last possibility I have to mention.
Nvidia has been doing a renaming as seen here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=332792

It is possible Dell could used the 9600M GT renamed to GT 130M.

There is also a hole where the enthusiast card could go. It could be a new card announced for the xps 16, I consider this extremely unlikely. Dell has never partnered with nvidia for completely new cards.

what are the possible exact screen sizes that the studio xps 16 can have? i haven't been keeping up with laptops lately so the only sizes i know of beyond 15 are 15.4" 15.6" and 17". does the name "studio xps 16" imply exactly 16 or is it possible for a 16.1, etc?

Do you think the GPU will be better? I hope it is but if they removed the XPS line because of competition with Alienware (even though dell denied it) then I don't see them putting a better card in the Studio XPS 16.
(but I really hope they do!)

16" in 16:9 aspect. Like Sony FW, HP HDX16 and Acer 6930.

I thought it was 16.4 but HP turns out to be 16.0".

    Probably 1366*768 and 1920*1080 resolutions.

It looks like the black shiny material used on the palmrest and lid are the same as the material used on the mini9 and 12. I am worried about this material being prone to smudges and fingerprints. Does anybody have any experience with the mini 9 & 12? Do the fingerprint easy?

It would be cool if they offer some type of customization to the apperance. Like your choice of wood or leather, and different colors. How long did it take for dell to offer different color options on the current XPS series?
