Phil, my studio 1555 was maunfactured in China and I am UK based. Not sure if the studio xps and studio are manufactured in the same plant though

All studio XPS that are sold in europe are made in Poland AFAIK. That being said, you can be 99% sure that the screens are not made in poland but somewhere in china or taiwan and they come from more than 1 supplier.

I think it was assembled in Poland though. Manufacturing of the barebone probably happens in China.

I would actually be very interested in knowing/seeing something more about this...

As much as someone may advice to take the RGBLED anyway, I would honestly take a WLED if that makes me save 310€. It would be a sharp and 1080p display anyway. I care for my display in a notebook, but not every price is fine to me and 310€ to have some brighter colors are really too much.

That said, the different size really makes me wonder, as it could look odd...

Actually I don't think the little black borders between the screen and the housing will be such a pain in the *ss after all :p

I went to a Apple Premium Reseller and saw that the MBP's and iMacs had more space between the screen itself an its surrounding than my previous XPS 16 with 16" RGBLED.
And it didn't bother me at all :)

But I'm still angsious to see some pics of the 15.6" WLED screen :p

But could you please make a close up of the screen? So we can take a better look at the borders of the screen ;)

    I agree with Base909.

Really many thanks, but this picture just shows that the difference isn't huge (as I thought). Still some more details would be precious to have... I hope newhit will post more.

    @Noesis
In my opinion it's actually worse than I thought :p
But maybe that's because I've used the 16" RGBLED in real life.

Can't wait for the better pictures :)

In my opinion, having that black border around the entire screen eliminates the distraction caused by having the black-to-aluminum transition right along the image, which I had issues with when looking at the 16" model in the store.

Still not very clear. Overall it looks fine. But I wonder at this point if doesn't make more sense to order a simple Studio 15 with the very same display. The chassis would be less cool and the GPU less powerful, but the rest is pretty much the same and it's less expensive... Mmm...

Studio is the budget option. Build quality on the XPS 16 is supposed to be better.

I had a Studio 15 and it had quite a lot of keyboard flex.

    *With Phil*

And that much more expensive is the XPS 16 not. Remember you also get a standard 1 year premium in-home support by default.

Overall a XPS 16 is maybe 250 euro more expensive. But you get a lot in return for that.
The RGBLED on the other hand, is not worth the extra 310 euro's in my opinion ;)

At least... :p To be 100% sure I'll need to wait at my new XPS 16 :)

    Rep +

It's fine despite the noticeable gap.
Hmm but I wanted to make sure, the space gap left from using a 15.6" instead of using a 16", is it covered by the black border of the edge to edge plastic cover or is it just dark empty space that we see?
Hope my question is not too confusing. lol

Yeah it definitely appears to be more black plastic (same stuff that's above the aluminum on the outer edge) and not just black "screen space."

Could you check the Hardware Ids?
I wonder who is supplying the 15.6 inch screen.

    16 inch WLED/RGBLED = Samsung

The 15.6" 1080p screens are LG and AUO. AUO being the better one, I read.

    AUO better then LG-Philips ????

i have been using both Samsung (SEC), AU Optronics (AUO) and LG-Philips (LP) and LG-Philips make often best screen.

LG makes great screens and they make terrible screens, so do Samsung and AUO. It's different for every screen. In this case, the 15.6" 1080p screens that Dell uses for Studio 1555, the AUO is said to be better than the LG.

However it is uncertain that Dell is using the exact same screens for the SXPS 16. It seem logical though.

Between 16.0" and 15.6", it looks like 15.6" will be the standard for 15.4" replacement.

Other laptop manufacturers also switching from 16.0" to 15.6".
    For example Acer.

We can expect new 2010 Studio XPS 16 will be smaller size (and lighter) with 15.6" screen.

..and will it be renamed to Studio XPS 15.4? :D
it's okay that this is the new standard, but once a laptop is designed for 16", putting 15.6" screen in it is kind of stupid imho

lol that comment was kind of stupid imho... its not like they are going from a 16 to a 13.. it's 0.4 of an inch... less than 0.2 of an inch on each side.. the hair on ur knuckles is probably longer

Here in Denmark the XPS 16 can be ordered with 3 LCD's:

    16" RGBLED 1080p (add 400$/281€ ;)
    15.6" RGBLED 1080p (add 14$/10€ ;)
    15.6" WLCD 720p (add 0$)

I just ordered the 15.6" RBGLED yesterday.

Edit: just saw that I'm not the only one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=411326.

yea i see where the mistake lie now. They got a Red leather 15.6" WLED 1080P and a Black leather 15.6" RGBLED 1080P. Guss its supposed to be Black Leather WLED aswell just so you can choose colour of your laptop, also expalin the 0,- price diffrence

thanks for those pictures of the new 15.6 dell xps studio, but i got a simple question. regards to the space that 15.6 has to compensate the extra .2in on each side. you guys said they had to put some black plastic to cover that up. and looking back at newhit screenshots , it looks like 15.6 side borders increase, but now it kinda look more uniformly proportional than the 16in side borders. idk if im seeing this right. did the extra border make xps 16 look better with 15.6 or bad? http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=37298&d=1250262928 i think dell wont include 15.6in as option on xps 16 if it looks bad.

can anyone make a picture of 16 and 15.6 dell xps studio side by side? so that i can see how they look and end my qualms which one to buy. ive already purchased 15.6 and its in production, but ill return or cancel if any of you tell me the design of 15.6 is not good.

update: ive seen this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...4&Category=177&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=2 and its pictures. it seems its not bad as ive thought. the red is kinda look better when its open because its sticking out the red edge which is making it more unique, but sad to say, dell doesnt offer red with non-leather (glossy).

My XPS with 15.6'' screen arrived 3 days ago. I have a friend with 16'' screen. Both look good. The 15.6'' looks more balanced due to extra borders (by extra i mean the borders are wider, there are no discernable plastic part "additions", the borders are flush with the screen as they should be). The 16'' screen extends all the way to the hinges so the design is a little weirder than the 15.6'' but it's still very pleasant. Imo the laptop looks nicer with the 15.6'' screen but ofcourse if function comes first, get a 16'' because it is a hair bigger :)

now with A10 BIOS i have really great RGB colours.

when i compare my top notch True life LG-Philps to my SEC5448 RGB i see major difference
(the image is of course razor sharp in the reality. just the camera flash who makes it a bit dizzy)

(this are with stock settings, have later on push down the saturation with maybe 10-15%)

...I'm on a crossroad now with choosing the right for me screen size and resolution. Could anybody be so kind and advise me on the following: what's the best screen's "size-resolution" ration for a daily work, mainly with texts (word processing, reading articles online) and for the second place - multimedia (movies, photos, graphic design)?

As far as I understand, Dell offers now the following sizes/resolutions:

    15.6" at 1600x900
    15.6" at 1920x1080
    16" at 1366x768
    16" at 1920x1080

I'm confused a lot, since: both 15.6" and 16" at 1920x1080 (as it seems to me) produce extremely small-sized interface/icons/text on the screen, making it hard to read for a long time; while resolution 16" at 1366x768, on the contrary, seems to be extremely low (like 1280x800 at 15.4").

It looks that 15.6" at 1600x900 is the optimum for me, even though it's extremely hard to find such resolution on market (i'm looking for refurbished/previously ordered new items on eBay). What you think?

    Any comments/suggestions are highly appreciated!

    Hi guys,

I would love to buy new Studio XPS 16, but unfortunately I cannot afford the "full-cream" version. I found this one with the lovely white top, http://www.mironet.cz/dell-studio-x...x1080--hdmi-vip-64bit-tv--2-roky-nbd+dp97539/ , it has, according to the description, 15,6'' screen, fullHD... What I'm wondering about is, whether it has LED or not, it's not written in the description - is DELL doing non LED LCDs in the XPS 16 series?

And please let me know, what do you think about the "refurbished" laptops - are they really worth the money or is it too risky to pay for it? ( personally I thought it was too risky, but I have no experience with it)

    Thanks

I currently have a stupid 15.6" 1600x900. Look at the sides of the screen, where there is that silver bit with 2 screws. If there is a space between the screen itself and that silver bit, then it's 15.6". Otherwise, 16". Getting my RGBLED tmr!!

great, I contacted the technical support in that shop and the display is WLED... Now I have to decide between a brand new one and refurbished one :)

I'm a little bit afraid of the refurbished one, because of the bad luck I have in last few weeks/months - my laptop broke down two months after warranty... my car was robbed, so I had to buy new radio, which worked 2 hours and died.. I sent it to service and got it back today and was told, that the radio works great... It maybe does, but not in my car :)) .. and this is not all, don't want to bother you with this stuff :) so that's why I am afraid of refurbished laptops ;)

I presume that both the AUO and LG screens are TN (for the info coming from the Dell 1555)? Is the premium RGBLED screen still a TN?

Does anyone make laptops with 15+ inch IPS or AAFS / AAFS+ screens?
