    Just ordered XPS 13.
    Estimated shipping date: 1/30/2015.
Applied a $100.00 discount coupon. But after the Sales Tax, it really doesn't feel like a discount.

anyone notice how they're charging $50 for Mcafee and it can't be removed. Look at the order details in your order confirmation.

So c-net has a review posted here

    Dell XPS 13 (2015) review - Page 2 - CNET

And in this review (with the 3200x1800 screen) they claim their battery test got 7 hours. Now I understand manufacturer battery claims are never 100% accurate....but 12 vs 7 seems like a really big difference. Is this because of the kind of test they run and in "real world" use it's probably closer to 9, and the 1080p version is closer to 12? If so, I can live with that.

On dell's website they specify where they got their battery life numbers from. 40% screen brightness and a program that browses webpages.

Cnet's test is videos. Granted, the macbook air almost doubles the performance. I'll have my xps 13 on saturday hopefully. I'll let you guys know how it performs.

The air has a much lower res screen so I guess that helps longer battery life with video playback.

I'm hoping the 1080p model will get north of 10 hours with "normal" use and less than 50% brightness. If it does that, I'll be happy.

I just checked one out at the ms store, it's definitely nice. As others have said the keyboard and touch pad seemed to work very well, and I'm definitely a fan of the matte screen on the 1080p as opposed to glossy.

If the battery life holds up, I think I will be very happy.

I'll kind of be short and sweet. Really like the new XPS 13 looks, I already have the i7 4th gen Haswell (anyone looking to buy, complete care - 2016?) Just ordered the i7/512 SSD.
I do have a question, I am not familiar with the M.2 SSD that is installed. From quick google it looks like it may be faster than the MSATA? Anyone feel like providing some more insight? FYI - I know about SSDs just not familiar with M.2

Haven't been this excited about a Dell release in a long time now. So much so that I went to the Microsoft store just to check this out. It's a sweet machine. Took a look at the WEI score for a rough idea of its performance, I'll attach a pic for you guys to see. This is the i5 with 4GB RAM. Very nice display, not sure if Sharp's IGZO display is IPS or not, but viewing angle looks just as good as other IPS equipped laptops, helps too that it's a matte display. Very snappy performance. I tried to open all the apps on the task bar at once, but by the time I clicked the next one the first was already opened. Very snappy indeed. I think I am sold.

The only disappointment is that the touchpad has no controls on the desktop to do forward/backward on Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer. Two-finger scroll and zoom work however, and work *very* smoothly, being the first "precision touchpad" Windows laptop I'd tried. The back/forward gesture only works on full screen IE app. There is not Dell touchpad utility, and the mouse driver in device manager is the plain old generic one from 2006 which I suspect is why gesture control is not supported on the desktop.

Can anyone tell me if scaling down the ultra high resolution screen on this machine to 1080p still yields sharp images? Thanks!

Just when I thought I would never get another Dell...

Had a tough decision between the touch and non-touch model but figured I would go with the touch version. Just sucks that it is not shipping for another 2 and a half weeks..

math indicates it will lead to subpixel blending, which will always be less than ideal for sharpness. But given it's 3200x1800 it will scale perfectly to 1600x900. That's not terrible.

    Mine too!

Ordered last night, checked 24 hours later and it's in production.

Seeing as we're probably one of the few batches of customers, hopefully we'll get them quickly. From quick Googling, it seems like most people get their computers before the expected delivery dates marked on the website.

Read speed should be close to 1gb/sec as its like PCIe style. I just Googled Samsung's M.2 SSD and so it looks like around 450mb write (!28gb), 600gb write (256gb) and 800gb write (512gb) - top of my head remembering. Best way to start is start with major brand's M.2 SSD specs.

    Thanks for the input, gadget.

I think every previous users of XPS 13 (especially those of Cypress touchpad!) understand that the TRUE REAL MAJOR issue with XPS 13 models is touchpad being activated and randomly making clicks during typing.

Due the design DNA, touchpad is located on the center of the entire palm rest assembly, instead of under the keys "F" and "J" that "normal" computers have. Hence people had their right hand kind of hitting and registering clicks on the touchpad.

Also, I CANNOT TRUST CNET's review on XPS 13. Why? Besides just benchmarks, EVERY SINGLE details they put out were all white paper specs information that anyone with internet access could write about. Prices, general intel specs, etc. It was darn disappointing.

    We need real user info!

Well. It will be usable, but depends on how picky you are. Win 8 will simple scale better. If you have QHD+, honestly, you won't have much issues, especally with Win 10 supposed to scale in PERFECTION.

That said, what you want to do is match scaling 2:1. QHD+ display halved is 1600x900. So for "sharpness" 900p could scale better than 1080p.

    Why scale down?!

Does anyone have an opinion on the i5 vs i7? Is it worth the extra couple hundred buck or will the extra power eat up some of the battery life? I am really on the fence about which way to go. Spending the extra money is a non issue as long as there is a decent performance increase without really hurting the battery life. Thanks for the input!

Not a lot of different. It's not just processor, but i7 model price also has 256gb SSD. And the write speed is around 40% faster than 128gb base with i5 base price.

    So it's two things.

I would say that the difference in battery life will not be significant. The only difference between core i5-5200U and core i7-5500U is 3MB cache vs. 4MB cache, base frequency 2,2GHz vs 2,4GHz and turbo frequency 2,7GHz vs 3 GHz. Oh and the dynamic frequence of the GPU - 900 MHz vs 950 MHz. Source: ARK | Compare Intel® Products

If the difference in battery life was higher than 5% I would be surprised. On the other hand I would not expect that the performance difference will be too high either.

Size comparison. Toshiba Z835 on the bottom, then the Samsung 900X3B, then the dell xps 13. XPS is a little thicker but certainly feels like a 11" laptop rather than a 13" one.

    IMG_5606.JPG

    IMG_5607.JPG

    IMG_5608.JPG

Really like mine so far as a travel laptop. Keyboard is about 90% sized but is pretty good. Not as good as my samsung 9 but certainly better than 11" laptops I've used (Samsung 9 11, Asus X205). Screen is really nice with good looking colors. I have the FHD matte one and wouldn't go with the super high res one personally. Scaling isn't perfect with FHD so not sure how people manage with anything higher. Touchpad is okay but a tad sensitive for me (few settings available to tweak it too) but I'll probably get used to it soon. I am not blown away by the touchpad but it is reasonable. Lovely design and I haven't heard the fan yet but I haven't done much with it. Sd card sticks out maybe 1/3 of an inch.

In case anyone is wondering why I have 3 similar laptops - the Z835 is broken and the samsung 9 battery is going and it seems to heat up for some reason more than it used to!

Well FYI it is SMALLER than my other two 13" laptops so if it is full sized then they are both larger than full sized!! It even feels smaller though you quickly get used to it as it isn't that big of a difference.

See picture on the left hand side (I lined up the right side of the keyboard on each) you can see it is about 1/2 inch, maybe a 1/3 inch shorter lengthwise. Sorry about the poor quality but you get the idea. Probably more like 95% of the size or something.

Ah I see why you were confused!

The keys itself are full sized, but they shortened the keys to the way left and right. Because even with slightly shorted backspace, enter key, tab key, etc, usability is largely the same.

If you look at the keys like QWERTY, you should see that individual keys are the full size.

From left to right the area is smaller because they shortened the keys that are "long enough." It's not 92% sized keyboard like they used to slab on netbooks when QWERTY keys themselves were minisized

Can you just take a look into those "middle" keys?

I don't think that's what they mean when they say "full-sized keyboard". Generally, that means a traditional keyboard with number keypad and whatnot. But in this case, I'm guessing that they mean it has function and arrow keys. But reviewers are mentioning that the keyboard is smaller and takes some time to type on efficiently. It looks like they keys are a bit smaller. The Fn keys are tiny. See the Verge pics

    Dell's new XPS 13 has a stunning edge-to-edge display | The Verge

See this review, around the 6:00 mark
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHFeK_FFRoE

Maybe we can get someone to actually measure the width of the keys and space between the keys.

I think the "full size" definition pertains to the size of the individual QWERTY keys. It's no surprise that OEMs manipulate the "length" of keys to the way left or right (backspace, enter, shift, etc) to fit into the form factor.

The issue to distinguish rises due to netbooks we had that packed 92% sized keyboard. Those had QWERTY keys that were actually smaller. But in the case of this XPS, the QWERTY keys themselves are FULL SIZED, but the long keys are shortened.

The video also I think it referring to the small palm rest area due to small foot print.

I saw the comparison photos. They shortened the keys on the edges that are already long enough. But actual QWERTY keys are normal sized. I'm 99.999% sure of this.

Hence why they can call it "full" "sized" keyboard.

14mm keys with 4mm spacing roughly. Same as my samsung 900x3B. The other person is correct in that the right hand keys - backspace, enter etc are narrower to achieve a narrower footprint. They do not bother me as they are large enough. I am not technical so just said it was smaller because it was physically smaller on the whole. It is a smaller full sized keyboard.

I think I know why it takes a little getting used to for me anyway - the keys require a little more pressure to register than my samsing 900x3b and I am a light typer. Other users will probably not have that issue and for me I'll get used to it in a couple of weeks anyway.

The palm rest area is not really smaller than my samsung 9. About the same size.

Thanks jbrierley, yeah I thought that QWERTY (actual keys) were real full sized and they manipulated the already long anyways keys on far left and right to reach the right foot print. Shouldn't bother anyways with plenty of length to begin with. Thanks for confirming!

The keyboard is fine on the XPS13, says the professional typist :p Definitely superior to the MacBook Air as the best I could muster on my MBA is ~75 after 3 tries. No ThinkPad good, nothing is, but very good for an ultrabook.

Does anyone know if this has the coil whine that the previous model had (haswell)?

It was the keyboard that was omitting it. I sure hope they solved this for the 2015 model

Hi flatsix! I just checked the Dell Business site but I cannot find the high end configurations you are referring to. Am I missing something here? I believe that you can achieve the same TOP configuration in the home department by customizing the i7 model - adding 512GB SSD, Win8 pro and McAfee.

It has one spot for wifi from the mPCIe slot. It's occupied by the wireless card. You could try replacing it with a WWAN, but the BIOS may block it. Someone would have to try first. Then there's the issue with antennas which need to be able to transmit on the correct frequencies without frying the card. So, I would say probably not.
