Yep the x1 carbon i5 4GB 128GB QHD comes in at £1509.99 which is IMO insane! Now worried Dell will stuff the UK too and do something terrible like no 1080p option or the base price £1000+ etc. Would be a pain to have it shipped over from the US if they mess UK options around.

Just placed my order for a high end configuration i7 and 512gb ssd. Expected shipping date is Feb 2nd. For anyone who ordered recently did it really take 2 weeks to ship?

I'm hoping the uk site is not quite set-up properly as at the moment there are non customizable options, the i7-5600U is only available with a 256gb drive and there is no option for windows 8.1 pro.
On the plus side its appears to be about £500 less than the X1 carbon. I'd like to see a detailed review with benchmarks to compare the 2.

Just ordered the top £1,254.00 model.

Have to say thats a very good price considering the top us model is $1599 and that has a 256gb ssd vs uk 512. And like you say the X1 is vastly more expensive.

Think dell have a winner on there hands here.

EDIT: Poo just realised the middle one has a faster processor...

I have just checked the Dell site for the Netherlands and am dissapointed to see they only have the i7 model with touch :-(

I was so happy to see they had a matte screen model which will also have a longer battery life
I checked the UK and German site and it is exactly the same : only the high level model

Hope they will also sell the "lower" level i5 with matte screen or else I will have to look out for another ultrabook or fly to the US to get me one there :)

I just changed with dell agent and they said you can get the i7 5600 with the 512 hard drive so might be worth calling local sell to see if they can configure it differently.

I just ordered mine the Microsoft Store. It's the i5 with the 4GB of RAM. I know the RAM is a huge issue for some. But being realistic about how I will use this machine, it will be more than enough.
So if you think you can get away with that configuration...Use the Microsoft Store education discount for 10% off. Doesn't require any special verification of any kind. You can also text MSSTORE to 295-02 to get an additional 5% discount. This brought my subtotal down to $768 from $899 before taxes and expedited shipping.

I Just wish they had those kind of deals in the uk. I am just waiting for my new credit card and some detailed reviews comparing the xps and the X1, given the lenovo is about £400 more with a smaller hard drive it woudl have to have some significant performance benefits or issues with the dell fan noise or how hot it gets.

If I had the option of 4GB ram I'd take it, people seem to still base ram requirements on older operating systems where you really need more every couple of years but at the moment Microsoft have been getting more efficient with ram leading to the last two iterations of Windows needing less ram than their predecessors. My desktop seemed underspecced with 8GB ram when I bought it (hex core i7) but despite pushing it hard with video encoding and photo work, it's never ran out of ram so I've not bothered upgrading it. I'm not claiming no-one needs 8GB ram but I do disagree with claims that 4GB is too low to even consider and 8GB is the bare minimum.

I'm really split what to do with the XPS 13, if it had the i5 and 1080p option here I'd have ordered one right now but I'm not fussed about paying a premium for the i7 for the little performance it gives and I don't want the higher resolution screen either given it brings little in the way of benefits and plenty of downsides.

I phoned and spoke to multiple people (as I had to add things and change payment details) and there was no way I could configure anything, prebuilt or nothing.

At least unlike many other ultrabooks, the SSD slot seems fairly easy to access and replace the drive so if you want to upgrade further down the line it shouldn't be an issue.

That's s pain I guess the chat agent got it wrong or was confused that I also wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1 pro. I can't understand why the would not offer a prebuilt model with the top specs.

My conversation with UK sales :)

    3:04:34 PM Customer Initial Question/Comment: . XPS 13
3:04:40 PM System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell Chat
3:04:40 PM System Connected with Krity Ranjan
    3:04:52 PM Krity Ranjan
Welcome to Dell Chat Sales , This is Krity , your online chat sales advisor, Hope
    you are doing well.
There are a few instances where chats get disconnected ,just in case this
happens Can I have your contact number to get back to you or alternatively
please come back with my name.
3:04:52 PM Krity Ranjan Hi there
3:05:14 PM Krity Ranjan How may I help you today?
    3:05:49 PM Customer hi
3:05:54 PM Customer im looking at the xps 13
3:06:14 PM Customer on your page it says it has an optional touch display
3:06:36 PM Customer where is the option to not have a touch display?
    3:08:05 PM Krity Ranjan
The machine comes with a touch screen, the reason it says optional is
beacuse if you do not need touch display, you can deactivate it.
    3:08:20 PM Customer no
3:08:24 PM Customer that is not what it means
3:08:32 PM Customer as your specifications clearly say
3:08:40 PM Customer the weight is different with a non touch display
3:08:55 PM Customer and it also says the optional FHD non touch display
3:08:59 PM Customer on the description page
3:09:25 PM Customer so im looking for that laptop
3:09:27 PM Customer where is it?
    3:09:42 PM Krity Ranjan
The reason it gives different weight for touch and nontouch display because if
you do not need touch diplay, and you deactivate it then the weight of the
    machine also reduces.
3:10:02 PM Customer are you serious?
3:10:30 PM Customer disabling the touch display will not physically reduce the weight of the machine
3:10:30 PM Krity Ranjan Yes, there is a slight variation in the weight of the machine.
3:12:05 PM Customer are you actually being serious?
3:12:18 PM Customer the weight of the machine will not reduce when you disable the touch display
3:12:33 PM Customer thats a scientific impossibility
3:13:27 PM Krity Ranjan Yes, there is a slight change in weight which is negligible.
    3:14:18 PM Customer
are you actually saying that when you disable the touch display via software it
reduces the physical weight of the machine at the same time?
    3:14:52 PM Krity Ranjan Yes,
3:15:40 PM Customer wow dell have managed to produce a scientific miracle
    3:16:20 PM Customer
you do understand that its impossible to reduce the physical weight of the
laptop via a software change don't you?
3:16:47 PM Krity Ranjan Unfortunately, yes it is
3:17:23 PM Customer i'm not sure whether to laugh or cry
3:17:27 PM Krity Ranjan the change is weight is not substanial enough
3:17:52 PM Krity Ranjan Sorry for the confusion. Can I arrange a callback for you?
3:18:09 PM Customer there's no confusion on my part
3:18:19 PM Customer i think you are very confused about this though

I think Krity is correct here.

If the touch functionality is activated, electric charge will be sent to the screen to support this functionality. Thus, electrons will start flowing and therefore gain speed. This gain in speed will cause their
relativistic mass to increase, due to the Lorentz factor. Overall, the laptop will then seem to be heavier to the user, but as Krity says, this would be negligible.

4GB is absolutely not enough for anything. Windows/Browsers will use half that in a heart beat. For the cost you are paying the fact it's only 4GB is ridiculous.

What an awful attitude towards a rep that is just doing her job. It's common knowledge that touch variants for laptops are heavier than their non-touch counterparts because the panels are physically heavier and thicker.

Well I believe OP knows about that. The issue is that the rep is talking - misleading - about the same hardware of which touchscreen feature can be turned on and off, thereby changing the weight of the same machine via software. While I agree that awharton could be a little bit nicer, I also understand the frustration when a tech rep seems to know jack about a new model which they should have been better trained.

I never asked about the weight of the laptop. I asked about the availability of the non touch variant as it clearly states on the website that this is optional. I was simply asking whereabouts on the website this model was as I wanted to order it. Some basic customer service training and product knowledge would completely avoid such a scenario occurring.

I actually found awharton to be nice and have a sense of humour.

    Gets me every time!

This is not about training, this is about common sense. I would think that the rep was trying to trick me into buying a more expensive model and that would be make very NOT nice.

Yeah lol. Every time I chat them it is pretty bad. Same with Microsoft. Now I am not an a-hole and wouldn't continue to exploit someone that clearly is on another planet, probably dealing with language barriers. If anything he should be talking that way to someone at Dell Corporate and ask them why they continue to get by with that stuff.
