That's why Dell has the Alienware line for gaming. XPS line is for people that chose build quality, sound quality, and a premium monitor over everything else. The GT540m does it's job, but it's not really the best for gaming. Lower the Res, and put the settings to medium however and it'll be commendable in some of the newer games out there. I've seen people playing crysis on the GT540m and it actually does a lot better than I thought it would.

Only reason I'm considering the XPS 15 is due to the build quality, superior monitor over every laptop out there, and the best sounding laptop speakers in the world. That alone makes it worth the price tag in my opinion. It's pretty cool that you could spend $700 for the basic XPS 15 IMO and have a laptop that has the best sounding speakers over any other laptop out there. Not to mention Dell service is far superior than Asus, Clevo, or any other brand. If you get the XPS 15, you have to get the rgbled monitor however. The new i5 is actually good enough for pretty much anything...so for only around $800, you got the JBL speakers, and a RGB led monitor? That's a bargain!

read everyone saying it goes into production after few days, does it look weird in my case?

i am a traveler here in us and if i dont receive my laptop by 5-4, i dont want to cancel my flight! :(

*Update* - Mine was delivered today as stated by FedEx. I looked on my box to see my 'build' date and it was on April 11th, 2 days after my initial order.

So far so good with the new machine. And yes... the 1080p screen is beautiful. Puts all of my other LCD's to shame.

For those in Canada (specifically Toronto): I ordered my XPS 15 on March 30 (it was basically April 1st, I ordered around 11:30 PM on the 31st). It arrived at my door on April 8th. I was surprised by how fast it arrived but I ain't complaining :D

    12/04/2011 around midday order
    18/04/2011 in production

EDD is still showing as 13/05 though :( I can't imagine it taking nearly a month to put it together and test...

    Fingers crossed!

Order Date: 4/12/2011 (just after midnight)
Was "In Production" the next day, 4/13.
Orders summary page showed, "Delivery Preparation" as of 4/13 night.
Checked FedEx by searching by reference with the order number and zip code and shipping information was already sent as of at least 4/14 morning! Subscribed to FedEx email notification.
Got notice from FedEx Friday night, 4/15, that package was tendered to FedEx.
Saturday, 4/16 morning attempted delivery, but to my office, so no one was there!
I'm expecting to get it on Monday, 4/18!

Much better than my original EDD of 5/16...

    My wait is almost over...

    04/08/11 - Ordered
    04/09/11 - In Production
    04/14/11 - Delivery Preparation
    04/17/11 - Shipped
    04/19/11 - Anticipated Delivery Date :)

When I ordered, my EDD was 05/05/11. Dell is giving me overnight shipping even though I paid for standard, seven day. According to Fedex's website, it received the shipping information on 04/15/11, but it does not have the laptop yet.

Ah, mine won't come until Tuesday. They shipped it via FedEx Home Delivery, which only runs Tue-Sat (hence the delivery attempt on Saturday, I guess). Regardless, the Tues morning order to Saturday delivery attempt was pretty impressive.

BTW, I chose the standard shipping (7 day or whatever?) and the delivery attempt was 1-day. It depends on how close you are to where Dell hands it off to FedEx. I'm in the Los Angeles area. I didn't think Dell had a facility here, but somehow FedEx received it locally.

Ordered XPS L502 on Tuesday April 12th, EDD was 5/13. Progress as of yesterday shows shipped with actual delivery date of 4/20. Still can't get tracking information from FedEx.
Anyone else think that Dell should give out a more accurate delivery date?
I can see people not ordering from Dell because they believe it will take over a month to get their new computer when in all actuality it only takes 1-2 weeks. I understand the fact they want to make sure and give out a date they can beat but they could also say it will probably take less than 2 weeks but it may take as long as 4-5 weeks depending on the components ordered.

Hi everybody, I wanted to get everybody's opinion of whether or not they think this is a good deal:

    XPS 15
    i7 - 2630 qm
    Nvdia GeForce 525m
    6 GB Ram
    750 HD
    Blu-Ray / DVD
    Backlit Keyboard
    1080p B+RGLED FHD Screen
    3 Year Basic Warranty
    9-Cell Battery

    For $1,282.70.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. But most importantly, I wanted to know whether or not people think it is worth it to pay an extra $100 for the 540m. Other than watching DVDs / Blu-Rays, I suppose the most demanding game I play is Heroes of Might and Magic and other RPGs. Thanks!

This has to be bogus. I just called the 800 Order Status line to see if I could find out what "sub-stage" my order was in since it has been "In Production" for a long time on their Order Status web page. I was told that my order most likely will be delayed because of a defect found in the particular i7 CPU in my build (i7-2720QM) and that i7 CPU is being recalled. If I changed my order to one of the i5 processors it would ship right away. I said ok and hung up because this was the first I had heard of any sort of problem with this processor and did not believe this person knew what he was talking about. Any one of you heard of any shortages or problems with the i7-2720QM?
    Thanks

In India, I got almost same configuration (With 3 year complete warranty cover, 500GB HDD, 4GB Ram) laptop way too expensive.

It cost about Rs.76000! Thats almost $1689 (@Rs.45/USD)

Great deal! Get your hands on it! It's reasonable!

I just configured it and got $1,199.99 before tax. That's without the recovery DVD (which I recommend getting). Try adding these coupons:

    $70 off coupon code: 932N$0ZCCHWZB9 (Expires April 28, 2011)
    Free Shipping Coupon Code: HLSKSR06S9ZG0F

Personally I don't game on PC much, so the 525m is just fine for me.

Thanks so much for yours and anand9184's help on this! The $1,282 was actually after tax, the final walk out of the door price. My base model was around that much. But, I took the plunge this morning and ordered. Now, I guess I can officially join this thread, my expected delivery date is 5/5, but I'm hoping to be lucky like some people on this forum and receive it earlier.. Hope springs eternal!

Mine was $1260 with tax. Ours are pretty similar, see my sig for my setup. I ordered mine on Sunday night and have EDD of 5/5 too. Hopefully it will be sooner :). I just called earlier today to see if I could cancel my extended warranty (I have 2 years) and they took $60 bucks off if I kept it! I sounds like this is a pretty common practice, worth a try if you want some more discount.

He he, thanks for the great advice, but I think I'm done. This is my second SB laptop this year, I originally got the new refreshed HP dv7qt (after numerous delays and telephone complaints), but returned it last week when I wasn't satisfied with it. So to say I'm a little Customer Service wary is putting it mildly, if I never have to talk to a CSR again, I'll be happy.

Original order 13/4, was told 35d for delivery; CS would not accept less than 30d so I cancelled. Sales offered new discount code that did not work, and would not help, managed to find own code & better offer so saved $200 on the first order a week later - no thanks to Dell!

New order date: 20/4, with delivery now forecast for 13/5 - only 23d - go figure? Dell were absolutely useless in helping with any issues, if it wasn't for the fact that I want a custom-built English keybaord machine in Switzerland for less than $1K, I would not order from them, or if the Macbook Pro were $500 less... :)

PS: Spec includes a Studio Design top, so that may delay things?

The studio design may indeed delay your computer, unfortunately. Someone on one of these threads wrote recently that his computer was delayed for a long time. I think he said that it had been two months and that the computer hadn't arrived yet, but I'm not positive.

This company sells laptop skins and lets you design your own: Skinit.com: Phone Skins, Laptop Skins, iPod Skins, Gaming Skins: Personalization on Demand.

They have skins for each model computer. There is one for the L501X but not the L502X ( Dell Laptop Computer Skins - Laptop Skins - Dell XPS Laptop Computer Skins - Skin It). I'm not sure whether the 501X and 502X have the same dimensions. The screen is the same, so they might. You could check both manuals on Dell's website.

Anyway, my wife created her own skin and it shipped quickly. It fits her Inspiron perfectly, and it looks sharp. I believe it was much cheaper than Dell's design, but Dell's design is surely higher qualty.
