    That sucks Ely.

I'm half tempted to contact UPS and ask them why it seems to have stopped in Poland. I don't have an Exception error in the delivery status bar, so it should be in transit, but there's no way it takes 6+ hours to go from Poland to Germany when you consider that it went from Korea-Kazakhstan in 6 hours and Kazakhstan-Poland in 6 hours as well, less even I think. Something, somewhere, even if it's just paperwork, has gone wrong.

Yep, it's trying to leave Poland again. Just got another update saying that it departed Poland an hour ago or so. Tomorrow, maybe, if we're lucky.

i decided to register here after finding this thread from a search result. Ive ordered a XPS15 too. It departed on the 16th Due To Arrive Today . it departure scaned in poland at 23:55pm local time, last night. Just now i got a second departure scan from poland at 21:13 local time, and just now an arrival scan in germany at 23:10 local time!Looks like its finally moving. me and you must be running in the same containers. I wonder why it took a whole day to leave poland...

I think you're in the same container as myself and Ely, as we both have the exact same order progress you have.

I have no idea why it got bogged down in Poland either. I initially thought that it was five to midnight and even though it was processed it wouldn't be moved until the morning, but that doesn't seem to have been it.

At a guess, I'd say it was scanned late last night, the container wasn't going to be moved until the morning, but the system had updated the container as sent (because of the departure scan) and it was only towards the end of the day (just now) that they realized their error?

Pure guesswork, but that's all I've got.

So far so good. Everything seems to be setting up correctly. I have noticed that the processor usage has occasionally spiked since I turned it on for the first time, and the fan has turned on briefly for that. I think I spotted a trick with adjusting the processor power settings that will "fix" that, if its even a problem. I'm just running the Performance rating thing there now, and the fan definitely came on for that, but the laptop has remained cool and the noise is a lot quieter than my current M1530.

Its quite likely we'll be waiting till 7pm or so. Looking at their site they hate certain delivers that need to be done before 9am others before 3am and the rest just 'by end of day' if only i knew that dell were tried the cheap delivery, i would hate asked to pay more so i could get it first thing in the morning. Our packages are sat in the vans for the entire day. All the priority packages hate been delivered, now its just everything else is being dropped off

Hey guys, to all the 6-cell battery owners on here, what sort of battery life do you guys see with the i5 and i7? I'm thinking of buying this for school and as a pc at home, and in the interest of keeping the weight down I'm considering a 6-cell battery, but I'm worried about terrible battery life with a 6-cell (I know it's a big powerful lappy, but still I'd rather not have to plug in every two hours atleast)

Why'd you skip the 1080p screen? That's the most important upgrade.

The 1366x768 screen will have terrible image quality unless you get lucky and get one of the not-as-common non-AUO-brand 1366x768 screens. Plus 1366x768 is a mediocre resolution for a screen as large as 15.6 inches, because you'll find that 12.5-inch laptops all use the same resolution.

The 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is one of the best laptop screens available right now, and you really shouldn't have spent money on this laptop just to skip this upgrade, it's not worth it. Higher resolution means more stuff fits onscreen, and it's also got much deeper black levels so the image doesn't look as washed out, and it's got better color reproduction than almost any other laptop screen you can get for the price.

I've seen a few XPS 15's around campus so far, some with 720p and some with 1080p, and I can actually notice the difference in image quality between the 720p and 1080p screens from 7 feet away, it's that big of a difference. Then the difference becomes even more evident when I notice how huge the 720p screen makes text, icons, and UI elements look, and how little vertical height in a web page fits onscreen, compared to the 1080p screen.

Here's some pictures of the 720p screen: http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...oes-l502x-need-full-hd-cable.html#post7483123

You got the GT 540M GPU, a small 12% increase in performance, but you skipped the screen upgrade that affects everything you do? And the power of an i7-2630QM is wasted when all of it ends up coming through a poor-quality ultra-low-res 1366x768 screen.

My advice: cancel your order, if at all possible, then re-order with the screen upgrade. Sacrifice the GPU or the CPU if you have to, but you should not buy this laptop with the 720p screen.

To tell you the truth, I'm more of a performance person than visual. I have a 720p 19inch screen for my desktop and that's clear enough for me. I would upgrade but, I'd rather use the 150$ somewhere else, I had a 1000 spending cap also.

it's not pixel density that results in clarity. your 19" screen probably has good contrast, good viewing angles, and probably doesn't have any image griddiness. Bad contrast, bad viewing angles, and image griddiness are all issues the XPS 15's 720p screen has.

Well if you'd rather save money, why did you spend money on the quad core processor and the GT 540M GPU and not the 1080p screen? It still doesn't make sense to get another upgrade instead of the 1080p screen.

If you have enough money for the 1080p screen, and enough money for more upgrades:
    - Get the 1080p screen upgrade
    - Only get other upgrades that make a difference for you

If you only have enough money for the 1080p screen, or another upgrade:
    - Get the 1080p screen and skip the other upgrade

If you don't have enough money for the 1080p screen, and can't fit it into your budget at all:
    - You're probably better off getting a different laptop, the 720p screen in the XPS 15 is known to be worse than other 720p screens.

Actually to tell you the truuth I don't know how that happened, I didn't even click upgrade, and if u notice, it didnt charge me an extra 100$ either, there is a link I saw before that I think is the same price with the 540 included. Weird but free?? Or maybe special.

Anyways, I would of liked the better screen but it's too late now. How bad could the 768 one be?? Hopefully I get the better one u said ;D
Also my dad paid for it, and he already said I spent too much, I wish I could get 1080p but I would have to do it myself somehow, my dad would never let me spend more......

Ahh now I researched it and I want 1080p but my dad wouldn't let me :(

    I just got my XPS 15 :)
Woah, it's really heavy and the fan didn't stop blowing air when I installed Windows, quite noisy.
I'll post my review when Windows 7 and the drivers are installed

If you get the order number, you can call in and cancel the order yourself. Then tell him it was cancelled, and re-order using the canada base configuration starting at $699 + $150 for the screen = $849

EDIT: if the i7 and 540M upgrades were already selected, you probably selected one of the higher-price base models. Somewhere on the site, that's the only base model it leads you to, but here you can find all the base models:
    http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-l502x/pd

Like I said, the first one with an i3 and a 525M costs $699 then $849 once you add the 1920x1080 display. Add an i5 and it's $949, but for light or non-CPU-intensive gaming (not starcraft 2) this won't really matter too much.

Just tell your dad you found a better deal for $849 for the same computer, but with "much better specs", and that the order needs to be called in and cancelled ASAP.

Thanks for the help but I thought all night and decided not to change it, I am a hardcore gamer, I beta yet a whole bunch of games for people and play system heavy games, I just wish there was a coupon for like 200$ off haha. Thanks anyways

My brother just bought a vostro but 14" screen 720p, looks great to me. I don't really need high colour and viewing angles because I can connect it to my tv

Final plan: just see how the screen is, if it sucks I return it and get 1080p

    Hi all,

I Wish I had found this forum before I bought my system today...after seeing some of the discounts here I don't know if I got a "good" system or not or if I could have done much better. Part of the problem is I don't know how to read the Dell spec sheet they emailed me. Can someone point me to a link explaining the items listed and please give me an opinion if I could have gotten a better deal. I bought this on the outlet store.

Thanks and here is the confirmation email.

@fakelogin - I would say so. It came out to 999 USD for the promotion (included Microsoft Office, the blacklit keyboard, 9 cell battery and Blu-ray drive) they're doing in the US. I added the 1080p screen which came out to 1,149 and then added a 100 USD off coupon. So it came out to 1,049 USD without taxes and shipping. :]

I got a good deal on mine, too. I got the xbox and the laptop (student deal) for $1,272.02 with taxes, for some reason the laptop wasn't actually free, just had a good discount on it... The laptop itself came to $1,095.59(with taxes, $1,033.56 without) with a discount from dell and with reduced functionality Microsoft Office (gonna buy that later). I'm STILL waiting on the laptop!

So what's everyone's shipping times look like? It seems the I7 takes longer to ship than the I5's, based on what I've read.

I ordered my XPS 15 w/ I5 2nd gen on Thur 9/22, with next day ship. It's been In Production since 9/23, no change yet. Hoping to get it this week before I leave town!

How's everyone else looking, and what processor did you order with?

That's what I went with. We'll see how it looks. I was on a budget, so couldn't really spend more. I kept it factory except for the free upgrade to 6GB memory

@m1_1x i heard that screen is one of worst ones according to people on this forum so i opted to get 1080p screen because i heard it is arguably the best screen on laptop currently.
@amojeba I ordered the i7 on the 20th. It's still in production, with an EDD of 9/30

Did yours go into production right away (next day) ? That's what my I5 did, it was "in production" by the next morning.
Ordered on 9/22, with an EDD of 10/4. But I really want it this week b/c I'll be out of town all next week. Gimmie my new toy already! :D

Don't get the 1366x768 screen. Buying the laptop with anything other than the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is a waste of money, because the screen makes more of a difference than any other upgrade.

The point of buying the XPS 15 IS the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display, and if you're not getting this screen then you shouldn't be buying this laptop.

Yah you can see the blue screen of death a lot more clearly lol. Obviously I disagree with your statement. While it's clearly a better screen, saying it makes more of a difference than any other upgrade doesn't make sense.

Performance and stability first, and aesthetic second. The real tragedy is getting this (or any) laptop with less than 6 gb of memory. Now that's a waste of money, b/c the computer won't function to its full potential. Obviously getting the screen too is a nice bonus. But if you had to choose, why would you sacrifice the performance just for a better resolution? That's like getting a Red Ferrari with a VW bug engine in it. Sure it looks nice, but it can't do squat performance-wise.

When it comes to the XPS 15, edit is right. The B+RGLED display IS the most important upgrade on this laptop. There really isn't that much of a performance/durability difference between the other hardware upgrades. Without the 1080p display, and aside from the outstanding audio, you can get a laptop with a better lower res display elsewhere, usually for cheaper.

1366x768 to 1920x1080 display: It's not just a pretty picture, it makes a HUGE difference by offering more room to work on-screen (which vastly improves multi-tasking), better viewing angles, and more accurate photo/video editing, etc... Can be upgraded later, but a major PITA.

RAM: Config with minimum amount from Dell and add more/better RAM for less $$$.

CPU: Not that big of a deal with SNB's, unless a quad core is needed specifically.

GPU - 525M to 540M: Not that big of a difference in performance (less than 11% IIRC). 525M oc's to 540 speeds easily/safely.

HDD: Aftermarket HDD's makes this upgrade moot. Kind of a small PITA to swap though it'll end up costing less per GB usually.

ODD: No need for Blu-ray if no 1080p display. Moot.

    Backlit keyboard: Pretty

    Internal TV tuner: Cool

    9 cell battery: useful sometimes.

WiFi: Get cheapest from Dell and swap later if desired.
