    Yep, true.

I wanted to know if others here have also had similar screen issues lately, or is it just me ?

Also, is there a way to tell which batch does a specific 9550 belong to, just by looking at the Dell sticker outside ? Or possibly the manufacturing date ?

That is helpful, however it still requires opening the laptop to identify the screen installed. If there was a way I can identify a (possibly) bad laptop by just looking at the Dell numbers mentioned on the box, I can simply ask Best Buy people to bring me a different piece. Would make life easier for me and them, and also speed up the process.

Don't think you read my post. I'm asking if there's a way to filter out bad laptops WITHOUT opening them up. That is, filter out the bad laptops by just seeing what their manufacturing date or batch number is, etc.

Speak clearly then you get clear answers. 'Open the laptop' means disassemble the housing. You seem to mean opening the laptop's box or packaging. That's not what you wrote.

Well to be fair, if he could open the laptop then he'd be able to check the screen immediately.

Oops, had just woke up squinting at my phone!
No, Dell do not offer up enough information on the packaging for us to tell, it is random on the panel's
Known bad batches isn't something they seem to be able to cope with, considering I had 2 laptops a month apart that had the identical tooling fault in the form of a blob under the panel just goes to show they employ blind testers in quality control or the 1st one would never have got through nevermind another, who knows how many hundreds were shipped with the same fault in that time!

No need to be a dick, that's my job round here!

It is crap that it is a lottery on panel quality :(

    1. Create Windows 10 installer with thumbdrive
    2. Remove both 1TB HDD + 32GB cache and replace it with a Samsung 850 m.2 or 950 NVMe
    3. Install Windows 10
    Will it work?

Sure. XPS 15? Remember that m.2 is the physical connector. It's not the speed.

Yup! Is there a need to change to ACHI mode in the bios before installing Windows 10 again?

What happens to laptops which you return for any reason ? Does Dell repackage them as brand new and try to sell them again ?

I can't imagine how many people must have returned their XPS 9550's because of this screen color issue.

I did that with the Samsung 850 m.2. There is a slight bit of tweaking for the 950 I think but several people have it running here well so search the posts.

For clean W10 install, GonZ0's ISO includes Windows and key drivers packaged for easy install. The ISO link is at the signatures of his posts. You can also find his instructions on a post.

If you like pain, you can do a clean W10 on your own (like I did). But it takes a bit of extra work (took me like 40 hours) and I needed to find a way to resolve some disc errors; see my posts for the errors and a work-around correction that is not guaranteed to work for others.

    Hy guys!
Could please suggest me a site where the SSD upgrade is perfectly described?
I've got just one SSD, without the additional SSD SATA storage drive. I found one called
"How to Upgrade Your Dell XPS 13's SSD"
I don't post the name of the site.

Thanks for all of the advice. I tried to force TRIM and it appears it is already running. Not sure what else to try, but I guess this drive is still a lot faster than my old HDD...

hi i recently picked up a dell xps 9550 on ebay for £360 which was quite the bargain in my eyes the spec was the 4k touch screen,i7 6700hq,960m nvidia and 16gb ram now the only thing not included was the hard drive as it was a returns company which were selling the item, the laptop is absolutly fantastic however i have an issue were it will only charge when the laptop has fully turned off if i have the laptop on it starts to charge then stops and the led light blinks to let me know this also that it is stopping and starting, i have tried 2 different chargers now and also various settings regarding the charging in the bios any ideas folks thanks

Hey guys, I've been searching around trying to find anyone running into a similar situation as I am.
When I play any streaming videos on any browser (tested on Chrome and Edge), video plays fine but if I attempt to skip forward, it would just get stuck loading.

I've tried disabling fastboot, multiple restarts/shutdowns. Any ideas on how to fix or anyone facing the same issue?

Hey i dont normally post but thought i would i would help with some info here.
    I have the XPS15, 4K, 512, i7, 16GB from MS.

BIOS: I had issues with 1.2.10, 1.2.0 is the best one out yet i believe, silent fans for the most part and working.
    1.2.10 had:
    * Fan on more than needed
    * Temp issues
    * Brightness flicker

SSD: I dont have GREAT performance, but the best combo i could get was:
    * ACHI
    * Samsung NVMe drivers

    Screen:
My first screen had red tinting, 2nd scree had red tinting and i could see the lines and dots of the touch panel, 3rd screen, i have a slight blue tint but i cant complain.
Also has a bit of a "backlight bleed" on the top left corner, but i dont want to risk getting a worse screen.

My current model is the same posted here, except that AIDA64 does not show the Monitor Name for me, but the rest was the same.
    Hope this helps

Does anyone have a good method to rollback to the previous BIOS, 01.02.00, or a download link? Upgraded to the latest, 01.02.10, without checking, and forgot to keep a copy of the stable BIOS. The flickering/removal of the lowest brightness level on my 4k screen has significantly worsened my experience. Thanks

I sent in an email to premium phone support (yeah I know but it is part of the premium support deal) on the 5th and as I had no answer I sent a rather rude and frank email yesterday telling a manager to call. I got a very english speaking manager on the phone last night who of course wanted to send a tech to rip the laptop apart and bodge in a replacement motherboard. Naturally I refused pointing out my qualifications and diagnostic steps.

He tried to tell me I was the only one with this problem so after I stopped laughing at him I pointed out this thread existed after being told he saw nothing on the Dell forums (I gave my reasons why the Dell forums are a joke) and said I would request everyone here who fell foul of the latest BIOS to email [email protected] explaining the situation regardless of the level of cover they have.
    So please do that :)

Hey guys I have the following issue: I have been playing Overwatch for a while. Everything works well and after re-pasting and undervolting, the GPU remains below <86 degrees celcius and the CPU below <75 degrees Celsius. Despite these low temperatures, after roughly ~ 30 minutes, the CPU starts to throttle to 1GHZ even though the temperatures do not warrant throttling at all.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

    Cheers!

    Gagvan,

What software are you using to undervolt? If it is XTU then I noticed a bug that caused the CPU to power throttle at ~80*C. Deleting XTU and using ThrottleStop solved that issue for me. You can not run XTU and ThrottleStop at the same time!

You can search my post for more details.

Alternatively, as GonZ0 noted, that could be the insides cooking and your laptop trying to save itself by throttling. . .

What BIOS are you running ? I noticed worst temp management on 1.2.10 than 1.2

I also have throttling in OV, i dont konw what to do tbh, i used to game DOTA and other games and never had this much throttling, lately is getting worse.

my message never appeared. I was saying that hammering it with overwatch for that long has probably heated up other parts of the laptop causing it to throttle, it isn't just the CPU/GPU that will throttle it.

    Hi!

I'll be getting my i7/512GB/FHD/84Whr XPS 15 soon. I've been reading this post and seen many people have some problems with drivers, mainly sound/ssd/bios.

Could you recommend me some steps to take when I get my laptop to improve the performance and reduce the chances of something going wrong?

    Thanks!

Click the link in my sig and go from there.

Of course see how it is 1st as Dell can be quite good at installing an up to date image.

[EDIT: Scratch the TB15 working well... after testing the 9550's HDMI port, I plugged the monitor back into the TB15's HDMI port, and the restarting began again. Still, it is DEFINITELY more stable than it was previously... it worked fine for three days! I have a return and refund scheduled for the TB15... looks like I will take advantage of it and wait for the rumored hardware revision.]

    -----

Just wanted to drop a note here to say that after installing all the new updates, firmware, drivers, etc. from late June and early July, ALL of the problems I was having with the 9550 and the TB15 have been resolved!!!

    - My laptop now properly wakes my Dell U2415 monitor from sleep over the built in HDMI port in the 9550.
    - The TB15 has been rock solid for 3 days now! Right after installing all the dock updates, the TB15 was shutting down and restarting every 5 minutes. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and I have had no further issues. Right now, I'm only using the HDMI port and the USB 3.0 port on the rear... both are rock solid!

I don't doubt that others are having issues with the new BIOS version, but I personally haven't had any issues.

Are you sure it is a hardware failure?

I would check the threads on speaker drivers here as there are issues around the software. Perhaps reinstall the drivers, then as a last case open the laptop and make sure the speaker wires are properly seated, not frayed, etc. Use a DMM to make sure that power is getting to the speaker terminals.

If that does not work, I would go to dell.com and chat for parts. Alternatively, periodically check:

Picked up a XPS 15 9550 again. Decided I didn't need my desktop anymore since I'm going back to school.

Got the model with the 4K screen. Compared to the FHD panel, the colours look much nicer and the ghosting isn't as severe as I remember. Most games scale perfectly fine at 1080p.

Updated to the latest BIOS and have no issues at all.

Spacebar seems a tad mushy compared to the XPS 13 9350 that I currently have on hand (but am trying to sell).

Anyone know if the FHD model with the 3 cell battery lasts just as long as the UHD model with the 6 cell? I've been only using the laptop at home since I'm not going back to school for another month and a half.

I read that if you disable the touch screen, it extends the battery life? Has anyone timed this yet? I currently have it disabled.
