Hey all. I had the dell xps 15 9550 i5 quad core laptop for around 1.5 years already. I bought it off ebay New but a while back others said it might be refurbished or not because there was both a small 32gb hard drive and a 250gb ssd hard drive etc. Such that when you first use it, everything goes straight tot he 32gb hard drive and i had to go to computer shop for them to open it up and make the switch. But besides that, the laptop has been fine.
I just recently noticed that when i unplug the charger from it, the battery seems to go out really fast. Back then when i first got it, i think you could have gotten close to 2 hours on battery. But because i use lot of tabs and run programs that use lot of ram, it was more like 1.5 hours. So the thing is i almost always had it plugged in. Basically when im using this laptop, its 99.5 percent its plugged in unless i bring it to a table and then use it without a charger but thats very rare. Now it seems the battery when fully charged is only about 30 minute max. Thats what it shows but recently my computer turned off pretty quickly the moment i unplugged the charger, so its like 10 or 15 minutes only.
Do i need to replace the battery or not? The thing is im almost always using it plugged in an outlet. I dont really bring it around and use it unplugged. However, i obviously would prefer to have at least 1 hour unplugged. How much does it cost for a new battery and where should i buy it from? Would ebay be fine? I usually get replacement batteries for my old laptops on ebay if i could get it there. Because dell certain would charge a lot for it? Again, i use it plugged in most of the time but if i only get 15 minutes on battery, well that is very little. And this is very common with batteries wearing out after 1 year or 1.5 year right? Again i use this laptop a lot... its on basically at least 15 hours a day. And i always have it plugged in. I know if you are plugging it in always, its best to take the battery out but this laptop, the battery is internal so i didn't have this option. Thoughts/advice here? This laptop has functioned very well.

You should always try to buy top-tier batteries Directly from the manufacturer.
Less expensive batteries from third parties will generally be less durable and last less time. Also they might not be properly recognized by the sophisticated systems inside the 9550. You just do not know. You get what you pay for (best case scenario).
That said, these batteries are not so easy to find so you might not have a choice.
Since you have two storage drives you need the ~5x watt smaller battery. The big 90+ watt batteries will not fit. There are some posts from @GoNz0 noting if the 9560 batteries are compatable but I thnk he is only addressing the big 90+ watt jobs...
Finally, Dell recalled some 9550 batteries and offer free replacement if swollen or in recall batch I think. You might research that. Maybe only some of the big ones. -
I’ve got the FHD screen and just bought a 4K monitor. When I hook up this monitor, Monoprice 4K IPS monitor, and try and extend my desktop it gives me no option to change the resolution. It is locked at 1280x720. I have it hooked up with an HDMI cable. I don’t have a display port cable.
I know this has the Intel 530 internal graphics and the dedicated GTX 960M.
What do I need to do to change the external monitor resolution?
I do have a Dell TB16 dock coming, but in either case I want to use both the laptop screen @ 1920x1080 and the external monitor @ 3840x2160.
What the heck am I missing? Can’t be this difficult!Last edited: Mar 13, 2018 -
Weird, the HDMI output should support 4K though only at 30Hz.
-
Tell me about it.
I can plug the monitor into my desktop HDMI port, with the same cable that came with the monitor, and it immediately switched to 4K upon boot up.
Will the Intel HD 530 output 4K? How do I force it to only use the GTX 960M?
At the very least I should be able to get 1080p on the external monitor.Last edited: Mar 13, 2018 -
Well, called Dell “premium” support twice yesterday. Hung up in the first guy after he asked if my HDMI cable was installed correctly. Give me a break.
Called back later and got a new agent who remoted into my machine and uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them for the onboard and dedicated graphics cards. Still had resolution locked @ 1280x720. He says the graphics card needs replaced. So, I guess I’ll have them send a tech out to replace it or evaluate the machine onsite at my house. -
It should.
You can't, with NVidia Optimus the output is always from the iGPU while the discrete GPU only works as a graphical co-processor (recently, only high-end mobile workstations can do direct output from the dGPU).
You could try reinstalling both graphics drivers once again, removing old ones using DDU.pressing likes this. -
What is DDU?

Over the past 6 months or so, my XPS 9550 6300HQ is running much better thanks to improved drivers and OS. I have a relatively standard config (clean install with no Dell bloatware, max performance power options, all nVidia drivers, enabled c-states, etc.)
But...I am getting FANTASTIC DPC latency results with two tweaks (see image):
1- disable c-states in BIOS
2- uninstall nVidia drivers with DDU
- Disabling c-states forced CPU to 2.2GHz max (vs. 3.2GHz max for this CPU). Not an issue with my applications. But launching SpeedShift (via ThrottleStop) allowed 2.8GHz speeds with no change in latency results. Not quite sure what is going on under the hood to be frank. Thanks again @unclewebb
- I think the latency improvement is a combo of better recent drivers and "disabling c-states". I have tried these same tweaks in the past with no significant benefit. My huge (40GB) live music program is incredibly smooth running now at very low latencies.
- Not sure uninstalling nVidia drivers made any real-world improvement. Improved the LatencyMon picture a bit, interestingly.

Ok, this is beyond frustrating. Dell said the graphics card needed to be replaced. So, today a tech came out and replaced the entire motherboard. Same thing. When hooked to this Monoprice 27772 4K monitor the resolution is LOCKED @ 1280x720. Now Dell wants me to send in the laptop.
I have no other monitors I can hook up to this, as the 2 older monitors I have are DVI, and I have no DVI output or HDMI-DVI adapters.
I have a new 4K television and I hooked it up to it, and I get the same exact thing, resolution locked @ 1280x720.
However, I have (2) 1080p televisions, and when I hook up to them with the same HDMI cable, it comes up as 1920x1080 and I have the option to change the resolution to anything below 1080p. Based on this, I do not see the point in sending the laptop into Dell, as the laptop will output to these TVs at 1080p and below, not locked to 720p.
I do not have a displayport cable, but ordered one today and will be here Sunday. Doubt this will resolve anything, but worth a shot.
Does this make any sense? I am totally lost.
I just spent the past hour on the phone and they say I need to connect BOTH a HDMI cable AND a Displayport cable to my monitor or TV to get 4K. Does this make ANY sense? As I see it, the monitor is only going to accept input from a single input, but maybe I'm wrong.
This is crazy. -
Based on my experience from precision 5510, I would have guessed that HDMI is limited to 2K or 2.5K. If you want 4K or dual monitorers (linked) you need to use DisplayPort via USB-C.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
In some of the more recent monitors that support 8K, the display needs two DisplayPort 1.2 cables to get the full 8K image, as a single DisplayPort 1.2 cable cannot carry a full 8K image. That said, this shouldn't be any issue on a 4K monitor, and I doubt it would even work as the monitor probably needs to support dividing the screen into two portions (the Dell 8K monitor actually displays half the monitor with each cable). Even with HDMI 1.4, you should be able to get 4K 30 Hz with a single cable.
Ideally, you should try a different cable (like the one you mentioned arriving sunday) as well as trying a different computer with the same monitor. This doesn't sound like an issue with the laptop. -
EItherway you want a usb-c -> DisplayPort cable which support 4k @ 60hz (as 30hz is noticeable when moving a mouse).
FWIW I use: https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_displayport_cable AND I had to tell my monitor to use 1.2 DisplayPort mode as it defaults to 1.1
My monitor is a 39.5 inch running at 100% scaling so any lag is really noticeable (and these bigger panels are cheaper than the smaller ones!)pressing likes this. -
This monitor works perfectly fine when hooked up to my desktop with the same HDMI cable, but at 30Hz. It will let me change the resolution to anything below 4K.

I just ordered this cable from Amazon and paid for the 1-day shipping so it will be here tomorrow. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EXKDRAC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hopefully this is the solution.
What laptop do you have, and what is the model of your 39.5 monitor? Thanks -
Hey all. When i powered on my dell xps, i got the dell logo message. Then it didn't do anything and just stayed like that. Then i powered it off and then powered it back on and it turned on. I had this happen not that long ago and also had it happened today. Before this, i never had this happen before. Is this normal or not?
Also my battery as i menntioned is bad since it wears out very quickly when not charged. I had this laptop for over 1.5 years already though and 99 percent of the time, its plugged in.
Do i need to have this computer looked at, at a computer repair shop? Do i need to buy a new battery even though its going to be plugged in most of the time? The thing is without it being charged, it seems to get no more than 30 minutes max and that if i make it 50 percent battery etc. I noticed that when i unplug it, it would then turn off just after a few minutes. -
Where would i find these batteries? I saw ebay has them for around 60 dollars or so. -
Look on Dell's website. Try Dell chat. Try calling Dell several times. Sometimes Dell will sell them to customers but not always.
Expect all batteries from Amazon and eBay to be fake garbage that, in best case, will underperform._sem_ likes this. -
I bought batteries from this seller (China) on ebay: http://stores.ebay.de/bill981101?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
Dell original, cheap but slow shippment (at least to Thailand). -
The seller may claim they are "original" but given the unofficial Chinese source, you can assume they are NOT "original".
They may work fine, have reduced live, or not work at all, but you won't know until they arrive.Last edited: Mar 18, 2018 -
I have a dell xps 15 9550. I plug a 4 port usb hub into the usb port as i use wireless mouse, and use keyboard and thus need a lot of usb hubs. I never had an issue at all. Just recently i had to charge a poweradd... this is a piece that charges your iphone. Thus in order to charge the poweradd, you need to connect it to an outlet. I had thought you could charge it to a usb port on your laptop.. .first off can you do this or not? Well the thing was i wasn't even sure which cable to plug into it as when i used a cable to plug into it and then tried to plug into outlet, it didn't work. It felt like that was not the cable to connect to the poweradd as it didn't fit. But i tried anyway. I then decided to plug it into one of those port hubs , i only had one available. Well not only did it not work, i got a message power surge on hub port message and my 4 port hub immediately stopped working.
I unplugged the 4 port hub and then plugged it back in and it didn't work. After a while, i got message that the usb port didn't work and to click okay. Says device is not working properly. But after a while it does work. My issue now is everytime i turn on my laptop, i cannot use my wireless mouse or anything else connected to the 4 port hub because it doesn't work at first. However after you wait for a few minutes, it would have that same message of the device is not working properly. You wait a bit, then it doesn't work. Then finally it shows the same or similar message and now it works.
The thing is did i damage my usb port on my dell xps 15 9550 laptop? Or did i only damage the 4 port hub? Because if its the 4 port hub, i would just buy a new one. However, i think its the actual port? Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Did i damage my computer? How do i fix this issue? -
Also there are 2 usb ports on the laptop. I never used the one on the left side of it though. So if the right one got damaged, does that mean i could only use the one on the left? The left one is not convenient since its right next to the charger plug in. Also if my 4 port hub is damaged etc, do i risk damaging the other port on the left?
Also what happens if both usb ports no longer work on the laptop? Then how would you be able to use a laptop? Could a repair shop fix a usb port? -
UPDATE:
Got the USB-C to Displayport cable, and it immediately set the resolution @ 3840x2160. YES!
I also bought the TB16 dock and a Displayport to DIsplayport cable, and the dock works with both cables.
Now I can retire this old/loud desktop!
Thanks -
Sad fact is you let Dell butcher a perfectly good laptop before finding that out m8
Today's lesson, Dell phone support have the IQ of a 3 day old goldfish Y/N
Next time refuse letting one of the partially trained 3rd party techs have a go until you have covered all other options as this is the standard line of defence at Dell.
- Reinstall windows
- RDP to let them **** about with it even though they have no clue
- Send out a "tech" to replace the mainboard
- Send in the laptop for 6 weeks for them to replace the board a further 3 times then give up and send it back as unable to recreate the fault, you immediately recreate the fault and go ballistic at them on the phone.
- realise all along that old cable you were using was the problem and in hindsight would have been the 1st thing a decent tech would have asked you to try replacing

Last edited: Mar 18, 2018 -
Yes, unfortunately they did go to the extreme measure of motherboard replacement. But, before I went that route I came here to ask questions and if I should be able to get 4K over HDMI and basically what I found and was told was yes, but at 30Hz. But, infact, it doesn't appear the FHD 9550 can do 4K with HDMI at all.
This was a refurb laptop from the Dell website, so it could have already had the motherboard replaced prior to my purchase, but I bought it as a refurb at one of their 25% off sales(maybe it was more, can't remember).
After spending time on the phone 2 times for an hour each time with 2 different techs, after hanging up on the very first tech asking if my HDMI cable was installed correctly, you would think they would know the specs and requirements. But, they obviously don't know Jack ****.
Before the tech actually replaced the motherboard, I asked if he had a USB-C to Displayport cable, or even just a Displayport to Displayport cable to test(since I had the TB16 dock which would accept either cable), but he didn't.
Oh, well.....problem solved and now I can get on with life. -
It is known about 4k at 30hz but as others have said USB-C is the way to go if you need more.
-
I was LOCKED @ 1280x720 with HDMI.
-
I know I read it, end of the day I already said a decent tech would have asked 1st if you had tried a 2nd cable as it is the most basic (and cheapest) thing to try when it comes to computers, even the onsite guy should have asked that 1st as the twat would have been back out the door 5 minutes later and still been paid the same, and yes they carry random cables, well at least I had every one you could have needed for this exact reason.
You live and learn, I just hope you don't have any repercussions from the used board as Dell are crap at testing as you have probably already gathered, and the techs are paid a fixed fee so it's hit and run and home by 1pm. It's a lottery if the replacement boards even work. -
I can confirm that disabling the C-States in BIOS alone is enough to get your DPC results.
Now I thought that it is possible to do the same in Throttlestop, but that tool is oh so cryptic and unclear plus confusing. A Google search for 'Disable C-states in Throttle stop' throws links to lots of forum posts that say 'you can disable the C states with Throttlestop'. Yeah, sooo helpful. Nobody explains HOW that is done, especially with a newer version of TS.
So what is the exact setting in TS to do the same as in BIOS? Obviously that would be a nicer solution as you could turn them off and on whenever you want without rebooting. -
I think the easy way to disable c-states in the XPS 9550 is simply via the BIOS.
ThrottleStop has a bit of a learning curve becuase Intel is not forthcoming about features and because ThrottleStop covers a lot of CPUs.
ThrottleStop enables some convenient features for me on the XPS 9550:
- undervolt CPU core & cache (disabling c-states causes laptop to run hotter so this offsets some heat)
- Intel power balance to favor CPU performance over iGPU performance
- SpeedShift with EPP=0 allows CPU to hit higher turbo speeds (fortunate oversight by Dell in the BIOS!)
I boost package power limits via some other tricks posted elsewhere (ThrottleStop can not access all the registers)
EDIT - ThrottleStop enables some neat tricks in c-states with the "c1e box" & "c8 section" -
Does anyone know the answer to this? I did shut down and then started laptop over and there doesn't seem to be issues at the moment. But im worried if it would have issues like this later on etc.
-
It is very likely that something just didn't mesh between your particular cable and the HDMI output of your laptop. Sometimes stuff like that happens. It may have just been that the contacts between the cable and the socket in your laptop weren't a perfect fit. Even a bit of dust can cause all kinds of issues. That's why you always try a different cable first and test it on a different PC (like you did) to double check if it is truely a hardware-related issue.
-
I used the cable that was sent with the monitor, and 2 other cables I had at the house. I also have the TB16 docking station, so I connected that to the laptop using its USB-C connector and then used the same cables attached from the dock to the monitor and none would display.
It just doesn’t seem that the FHD version of this laptop is able to output to a 4K display over HDMI, even at the reduced 30 Hz. -
I called dell. I told them the dell xps 15 9550 i bought it was bought from ebay and not dell directly. They asked me what is my service tag number. When i looked at the bottom of my laptop, there is no sticker there like with my old laptops. I recalled there is always a sticker there for service tag. Im pretty sure i did not take it out last time when i got the laptop. Can others confirm there is no service tag sticked to it?
They tell me if its not there, i have to start my laptop, press f2 and look at the bios and there should be a place where it shows my service tag. Say it should be 5-7 characters. Can someone else confirm this is true or not? Also is that process easy? I did not want to press f2 when loading laptop as i dont want my laptop to have issues etc.
I was then told i have to give them that service tag... otherwise i cannot even order the battery.. is that true or not? I have never heard of anything like this? They then tell me it cost 81 dollars plus tax but shipping etc. They would not tell much how much total cost is but i assume its around 110 dollars or so then for the battery?
Then they told me if you give them service tag, they could check your battery to see if you are eligible for free battery replacement because there is a battery issue with this model. Is this true? I had googled this a while back and read dell is offering free battery replacement. The issue though is they said in order for this to work, you need to send your laptop to them, then they replace your battery and then put new battery and then send laptop back to you. I cannot do this since that would mean i would have no laptop. They said it would take at least 12-15 business days so obviously i would not do this. I said couldn't i send you the battery and then you send me the new battery and they said thats now how it works. If thats the case, who here would even get the free replacement battery since it requires you to send in your laptop and they have it for 2 weeks. That seem ridiculous.
What im shocked was the price is 81 dollars plus tax and shipping. I thought the battery would be a lot more. On ebay its around 62 dollars or so though. So wouldn't it make sense battery on ebay is probably legit as thats not that far off from the 81 dollar price tag from dell? I thought the battery was like 200 dollars or more etc. -
Also in addition to this, i read people talk about battery swelling and bulging. I have not opened my laptop up myself so could it already be swelling and bulging the battery? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this laptop physically when you look at it. But the battery definitely drains very quick now. Back then it use to be close to 2 hours, then 1.5 hour and then 1. I think right now i could get max 30 minutes if i make brightness 0 etc. But i think its more than 15 minutes max now because when its regular brightness, it went out in a few minutes when i unplugged it.
-
To see the service tag number, you need to flip open the small door that is on the bottom of the laptop.
If it is not there, you should be able to find it easily in the BIOS by following the instructions that they gave you (pressing f2 key repeatedly after turning the power on). It is completely safe to do that. Unless you start to randomly change BIOS settings, there is nothing that you can do to harm your computer. After you get the service tag number from the BIOS. just click on "exit", and the computer will re-boot as it normally would. -
Hi there thanks. I did not recall you could flip over that small door. It is a 7 digit/word number for the service tag right? Thats all they need?
Can others confirm here that after you give them the code, it would tell them if i would be eligible or not for the battery? But the most important thing is could you get the replacement battery without having to return the laptop? That is just ridiculous if you have to return the laptop and thus have no computer for 2 weeks etc. Surely they could send replacement to you and then you send the old one back? Then if they don't receive it back, they charge you for the new battery? Also does anyone know how long it takes to receive the new battery? Because i would have to receive it within 10 days max etc. The person on the phone said if you buy a new battery from them, it would be 81 dollars plus tax and shipping but take 3-5 business days. Does anyone know how long if they send the replacement one?
Also when i unplugged my charger even when i made brightness very low, i basically get 5 minute max before my laptop turns off. So that means my battery is thus no good anymore then right? Its basically 100 percent batter then after a few minute it shows 80 percent left and 12 minute letf etc. It basically shuts down within 10 min at the absolute max.
Also is it hard for you guys to take out this battery? Because im not a tech guy and dont want to damage my computer etc. So what i would prefer is they send me new battery. I then bring my laptop to a computer repair place and then they take out my old battery and put in new battery, then i return the old battery back.
Is it hard to do this? I also am not sure if i have the tools or not to do this. I know there aren't a lot of screws etc but again i don't want to risk damaging it.Last edited: Mar 19, 2018 -
The battery for the XPS 9550 that I had was eligible for the battery recall and replacement. They sent the replacement battery to me, and I installed it myself. Then, I had to return the old battery to them. They included a pre-paid shipping label.
-
lesz, how long was this ago? How long did take for you to receive the new battery? Because i have to get it pretty quick by say late next week. Do you recall how long it took? Also was it easy to take out and put new one in etc?
So you could only do this over the phone right? Thus i had asked them if i wanted to buy this battery online, i could not according to them. They said it had to be over the phone because they didn't have any in stock. -
I can't remember for sure, but I think it took about a week to 10 days for them to ship the replacement battery to me. This was done about 5 or 6 months ago.
In my case, I was notified by Dell via an email that the battery in my laptop was part of the recall and eligible for the free replacement. I just followed the instructions in the email to request the replacement, and I never talked with anyone on the phone.
It took about 5-10 minutes to replace the battery. You first have to remove the back cover of the laptop. You need a small Torx screwdriver to do that (and also a small Phillips head screwdriver). Once the back cover is removed, you will find that the battery is held in place by about a half dozen small screws. After removing the screws, all you have to do is to carefully disconnect the old battery, connect the replacement battery, put back the screws that hold the battery in place, and put the back cover back onto the laptop and replace the screws that hold it in place. -
Okay so i contacted dell again They asked me for service tag number and i gave it to them and i was told that my battery was not affected. They said first off my warranty expired in september 2017. I got the laptop around september 2016 and got it off ebay brand new etc.
They said this free replacement battery only affected certain users and not mine. They said it involved battery swelling. Did all of you had battery swelling? The thing is could there be battery swelling but you just don't know about it? Such as if you open it up? Because there certainly is no battery swelling. Anyone here not affected when you called with the service tag? Anyone here able to get this when your battery did not swell?
My battery drains very fast now. Like 5 minutes to 10 minutes at the absolute max. So that means this most likely is my battery then right? Thus my battery is no good?
They told me i could buy a new battery and its 81 dollars plus tax. They said shipping is free and its 5-7 days or business days, not sure. But they said it could even come faster. They said if you want expedited shipping, they do not have this option. Does anyone know if this is all true? Because someone else i spoke to said i could buy a new battery and have it fedex for 3-5 days and i have to pay for shipping. But this rep said i do not have to pay for shipping and i cannot even get expedited.
Would like input on this soon as i need a new battery pretty quickly. -
I did the exact same thing except Dell left me a voicemail rather than an email.
@Drew1, the battery recall information can be found here: https://www.dellproduct.com/. Enter in your service tag there to see if your laptop qualifies or not. If it does, you should have a choice to send your laptop in, or have them ship the battery to you and replace it yourself. The steps on how to replace the battery is on that site as well. -
Hi there. Well the thing is i already gave them my service tag information.
I get this message
No Bulletins Found
There were no active bulletins found affecting the products you entered.
That mean i have to buy a new battery then for my laptop right? Also does anyone know if there is option to get expedited shipping or not? First rep said its fedex and you get it 3-5 days but then one i spoke to now said its 5-7 business day for shipping but said it could come even sooner.. .said there was no option to get faster shipping. -
Kkay i would like input on this. So i spoke to tech support on this issue and transferred me to out of warranty to speak to someone else. That person i gave the my service tag and said i was not eligible for the free replacement battery because my tag number as no affected. They said i could buy a new battery for 81 dollar plus tax. They said shipping is 5-7 days and i could get it even faster like 2-3 days but there is no option for expedited etc. Thus it take 5-7 days.
I then called back but then spoke to sales. I told them my issue and said to buy the battery. They told me it wasn't in stock. They said because the laptop was out not that long, there is no replacement battery.
I then told them i spoke to out of warranty and was told i could buy it from them. They then transferred me to out of warranty and i spoke to another rep. I told them sales rep said i can't buy this battery because this replacement battery is not in stock. This person then tells me they will check. They said there is no new batteries for sale. But i could buy a reburbished battery for 81 dollars plus tax and said it take 2-3 day shipping. So this rep tells me only refurb battery is available and shipping is 2-3 day only. I said i spoke to someone earlier who was out of warranty rep and they said it was 5-7 day shipping and said i could buy it from them and they didnt even say to check stock etc.
So here, what is going on? Why am i getting different answers from different reps? I said so the rep that told me its 5-7 days is wrong then? He said yes.
He said he doesn't know where there would be new battery in stock for this laptop. He said it had to do with battery swelling issue as well.
So based on this, what should i do then? Should i buy the refurbished battery from them? So there really are no new battery replacement for this laptop? How could this be possible from dell? The only other option is ebay and they sell it for around 62 dollars. But is it better buying it from ebay or from dell because dell is REFURBISHED battery. They said warranty is 90 days. The other thing is i have to get this battery soon as i need it very quickly. Does anyone know if this battery was ever available for sale new? Because it seemed like they implied this battery was never available for sale brand new. Also i never heard of buying refurbished batteries... so this is something im surprised. Because aren't refurbished battery bad idea etc? Because on ebay, at least aren't those most likely new if they say its new and feedback from seller is good?
Anyone have tips on this? I have to either buy it pretty soon from them or ebay. -
Yes they're absolutely ridiculous for not stocking replacement batteries and it's a common problem last years, maybe because they're having issues with them. Also mailing batteries around became problematic.
Buying a refurb is silly because batteries last only 300 full cycles by certain Dell documentation (well depends on how much capacity drop one considers).
If you really need the battery and can't get a new one from them, see if you can get a compatible one from elsewhere for a reasonably lower price (avoid "genuines" "originals", counterfeiters tend to put more effort in cloning labels than battery quality). Otherwise wait until Dell gets some stock. -
Hi there thanks for that information. Yes buying refurb make zero sense. Im going to buy it online from a reputable ebay seller then.
Also how could they not have replacement batteries? Is it only because of this model having issues or something else? -
Hey all i ordered the battery replacement so it will take a bit to come here.
To anyone that has opened this laptop up to replace the battery, is it pretty simple or not? And i would first need certain tools right? I have certain screwdrivers etc but not sure about it as from looking at youtube video, it does seem simple but i dont want to risk damaging my laptop.
Anyone have tips on this? Also if i go to a computer repair shop to replace the battery for me, how much should they charge for this service? The thing is there are very few screws on this laptop so i figure this probably doesn't take more than say 5 minutes max? But of course i dont want to try and do anything myself etc. -
Drew1,
You seem like you're a great and very caring individual yet in my very humble and honest opinion and by your posts, you need to just calm down and not get so worried about "EVERYTHING", as I know these things (laptops) aren't that cheap unfortunately for many, yet you need to remember, they're put together electronics with things inside that will eventually will go bad and especially with ongoing use (wear & tear) and these are the things that you & others should be definitely considering when deciding whether to extend the manufactures warranty or not.
I personally don't know how anyone would spend this kind of money on something and not make sure it's covered for any needed repair, as even though like many great members are either well trained or extremely handy, there are still things in my opinion that are just easier to have the manufacturer repair or replace.
Don't get OCD over these things as they will eventually stop working like they once did and just like we ourselves unfortunately will as well
and do basic Internet searches for your questions, as there's endless information all over the Internet that can give you many of your answers including this great NotebookReview venue in their searchable threads.
FYI - Here's a link to your question on how to change the Battery in a Dell XPS 15 (9550) with the necessary needed tools as well (See below) and for the rest of you GREAT & Kind members/owners they even sell the easy stripped screws individually for $1.49 with a Ridiculous $5.00 Shipping charge, yet I guess if you need it and cannot get it then it's good.
Good Luck & Regards,

Bought the new battery on ebay. Went to a repair shop and they opened it only to find out i bought the wrong battery from ebay. How many different dell xps 15 9550 are there then? The battery they gave me was a very long battery. The battery in my xps 15 9550 was a bit more than half the full length.
Now i have to try to return the battery on ebay if i could. What is the exact name of this battery i need? Its dell xps 9550 and has 6300hq processor.
