okay so the model that i got on ebay is

    4GVGH

This one is way too long.

The battery that i need is

    Type: RRCGW

This is about much shorter in length.

Can someone tell me what laptop model that dell xps 9550 battery received is then? So if someone has the xps 9550, they might have the longer or shorter battery? This is first time i bought laptop battery where it didn't fit. So this is a different xps 9550 model then? How many different models are there?

i mentioend that i called dell on this issue and people told me to call them and buy it directly from them. I was told they only sell refurbished batteries and i did not want to buy this. Who would buy a refurb battery? They had no new ones in stock. So only option is ebay or amazon. Amazon, there are no reviews for the batteries and they are not dell brands but brands i never heard of like the link i posted in my previous message.

I bought it from ebay only to find out the battery they sent is not compatible as its too long. So now i have to return it back and buy a new battery. But i have to make sure that battery is compatible etc. So i like to know from other dell xps 15 9550 owners, which battery do they have? Why are there 2 types of battery? The one i got is way too long and don't fit. The one that is inside when opened is like 70% in length etc.

    Hi MikeBravo,

If you're not in a rush for them just go to eBay and put "xps 15 9550 screws" in the search bar as they either come from the UK or China as I wouldn't give anyone $5 Shipping for just one screw. The UK sellers give you 12-T5's for $6.50 with Free Shipping.

    Hi Drew1,

You NEED to do RESEARCH, RESEARCH & RESEARCH before buying "ANYTHING" you're unsure of.

FYI - The XPS 15 9530, 9550 & 9560 came and comes with "different configurations" and you appear to have bought the 9550 configuration that came with (2) Hard Drives (32GB m.2 SSD + Standard 7200RPM) and that would yield you the "smaller" sized "56Whr" battery vs the BIGGER "84Whr" battery, which you apparently and wrongly purchased.

Take a good look at your original battery and READ what is written on it's casing. Now you will know what you need and need to buy.

In the end it's ultimately your call and of course what your wallet can afford. If you buy it directly from Dell yes it will more than likely be more then buying it from 2nd, 3rd and etc. sellers yet you also get the peace of mind, which you greatly NEED, to know if anything isn't right Dell will honor your purchase and make it right.

    Good Luck & Best Regards,
    SDeP58

Hi there. Well my old laptops, i would either get the battery from the manufacturer or ebay and i never had an issue since i just typed in name of my model. With the xps 15 9550, i know there are other model similar like 9530 and 9560 but since i typed in 9550, i figure that has to be it. I did not know there were few configurations for each. I did recall there were different model for different year for the 9550 but thats all. Also the prices on ebay look so similar so thats what i thought. Yes the hard drive you mentioned is exactly what i got.

Well i know now when the guy at the repair shop opened it up and said battery does not fit. The thing was i never opened the laptop myself as i don't want to risk doing any damage to it. Because i think, okay my model is dell xps 15 9550, just get that battery etc. I mean how many laptops are there where you type in the actual model, and there are several configurations where some are different batteries? Very few right?

I mentioned this already. I contacted dell on this issue. The first i spoke to said they had it brand new for like 81 dollars. This was someone in the warranty period rep. I then called back and called sales and said i wanted to buy it, only for them to tell me its not available which make no sense. Then i spoke to someone in extended warranty and told them i got 2 different answer from 2 different people. He checked and then told me its available but only refurbished battery for 81 dollars plus tax etc. I asked him, you telling me no new batteries... he said not in stock.

    Hi Drew1,

I think it's safe to say that you do know what usually happens when we ASSUME right? :)
Here's my saying, When in doubt check it out!!!

$81.00 for a new Dell Battery is a great price yet if it's for a refurbished one and I may be wrong here but I don't think Dell will warranty it for as long as a new one. If that is the case and they will only warranty it for 30 or 90 days then you would do just as good if not better buying them from a third party seller.

Below are 2 links I found for you as one is a computer parts online retailer who has the battery you need for $120.00 New with a 30 day money back guarantee and 1 year warranty and the other is an eBay seller who says his Dell batteries are Factory OEM New with a 30 day return policy and 90 day warranty for $88.88, which I think he must like the number 8. :-/
At any rate like I said, in the end the final decision is yours.

    Good Luck & Regards,

Here you go (See Links Below) Hey I'm a poet and I didn't even know it. :)

500pcs for $9.90 + Free shipping should get you what you need for all the needed screws inside the laptop and your family, friends and etc. too.
12pcs of the T5 M2 3mm Torx for the bottom cover, as I believe the Dell Precision 5510 is the same as the XPS 15 (9550) chassis and vice versa, for $5.99 + Frees shipping.

Well, it finally happened. I screwed up bad-----very bad.

After having upgraded the 256 GB PM951 in my machine, an i7 9550, to a speedier 512 GB Toshiba XG3, I set about to do the same with the second machine, a duplicate of mine by creating a system image, installing another Toshiba 512GB XG3, and restoring the system image of the old drive just like I did the first time. Of course, not only didn't it work, the restore kept on failing after first completing, but being unable to boot. The machine said that their was no drive installed. Then, upon replacing the old PM951 to get back safe, the machine wouldn't boot. All I get is a big blue screen saying that the machine needs repair. Even fresh installs wouldn't work on either the new XG3 or the old PM951. I even got out my old PM951 and the machine booted to it just fine, but I couldn't find a way to overwrite that drive that with the system image I am trying to restore. The machine kept telling me to boot from a repair disk, but with UEFI that of course wouldn't work. Returning to legacy boot did, but the machine refused to use the image saying that it was a UEFI image and I was working in BIOS.

Anyone have any suggestions----understanding that preserving the system image intact is essential.

    Thanks.

Are both machines set to AHCI or RAID (do they both match)?

Also you can probably boot from a Linux USB stick and still access your internal drive (which should at least confirm the files on the internal drive look ok).

When I began the image was from a the basic Dell Raid setting and the machine set the same way. The machine would not recognize the Toshiba drive. Experimenting, when I set the machine to AHCI the restoration proceeded, but when it finished the machine said that their was no drive there. Then I tried a fresh install, still in AHCI. Upon doing that, it found the drive and there were several partitions on it apparently left over from the guy I bought it from. I deleted then all and then proceeded, but the fresh install failed saying that it could find no drive.

I'm hoping I didn't fry both NVME drives though I always ground myself, disconnect the battery and push the power button for ten seconds to bleed off any juice.

The Linux stick is an idea. I guess I'd have to reconfigure to legacy boot, but maybe I at least can see if the drives are viable.

    Thanks for taking the time.

Try the trial of macrium reflect as that can restore to dissimilar hardware.

I wouldn't be panicking yet - it sounds like the install might be simply missing the correct driver or the default MS one is not working with this drive.

Thanks for the tip, Gonz. I didn't know that. What I have decided to do first based upon advice from Schoo2k is use an old Samsung 1 TB 840 EVO Sata SSD that I dug up and install the image on that. Then, one by one, I'm going to reinstalll each of the two NVMe drives and see if they come up in the drive management snap-in and then if I can access them to either format them or delete any corrupted partitions and then reinitialize. Then I'm going to change the restored image from Raid to AHCI (which I should have done long ago, but got too lazy) as the problem with installing the Toshiba NVME drive might be the drivers not agreeing with the Raid setting.

If that doesn't work then I'll try the Macrium Reflect straight up.

    Thanks again guys.

Why not secure erase the problem drives via the bios 1st? Just take out any good ones 1st.

Hi! I've had my Dell XPS 15 9550 for 14 months now and whilst I do love it, I've had some patience testing issues with it for the passed few months. It started in January this year, I started getting all types of BSOD's on start up and during use including NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM - SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO - KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR - DFS_FILE_SYSTEM - KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED - CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT - and errors on boot up suggesting a "hard drive is not installed." I had all sort of different error codes with no dump files being produced.

I'm a complete amateur with computer repairs as until I bought this laptop I'd been running Windows 7 or XP and have never had problems like this before (in fact my 10 year old Win7 Lenovo desktop has never failed me *touch wood). So I've done a hell of a lot reading up on stuff that I barely understand. I've ran CHKDSK, checked for updates with Windows Update, Dell website and Intel. I've ran numerous hardware diagnostic tests including the use of a USB Memtest86 diagnostic tool. No errors have become apparent. The problem eventually became so severe I got stuck in a start up repair loop and so I reinstalled Windows 10 with a bootable media device.

After reinstalling Windows 10 everything seemed pretty awesome again! I installed all the latest drivers, let Windows 10 do its thing and removed a fair bit of bloatware. Now, since reinstalling about 5 weeks ago I'm having seemingly different issues, and it's not something I've ever seen reported online.

The laptop wouldn't boot at all, kept going into start up repair. So I tried to do a boot repair as this is something that helped previously. Unfortunately command prompt stated that it "could not find specified path." In fact many of the commands suggested, such as /f /b /x (can't remember the exact command), would not run at all! So after some reading I thought maybe it's the SSD. Then I plugged my adaptor in and tried to start the computer up and low and behold it starts up every time I have the adaptor plugged in, but not when I try to boot on battery alone. There is nothing to indicate that the battery is faulty, it charges fully, and when I try to boot on battery alone the Dell logo loads up but is then followed by a black screen with the power light on and the keyboard illuminated. I've been using it for a few days now with the adaptor plugged in and receive no errors what so ever! However when I try to boot without the adaptor, same black screen result. I've used HD Tune Pro to test the hard drive but it comes up with no errors.

I have no idea what's causing these issues but would really like to get to the bottom of it. It seems to run fine now when plugged in with no BSOD's so far (though I've not yet done any heavy work), but it will not boot on battery. My battery health is apparently 86% and I hadn't noticed any shortage of battery life before this occurred.

I could really use some help!

P.S I have now discovered that if I unplug the adaptor whilst the laptop is running it crashes.

Thank you for your response GoNz0

    It's a Toshiba 256GB - THNSN5256GPUK NVMe

I recently updated the RST driver to the October 2017 version 15.9.0.1015.

I did attempt to install the OCZ driver but it doesn't seem to work.

Thanks anyway, but my efforts ended in tragedy. After imaging the 840 EVO and changing to AHCI, it booted fine. I installed the XG3 and in diskpart was able to remove four of the five parttions (not sure why it wouldn't boot) but Windows wouldn't let me remove the healthy efi partition owing to a conflict with the boot drive it said. Then, while creating a new system image, that failed. So, I removed the XG3 and then after that the machine wouldn't boot at all. In fact, with the NMVE out, it affected the BIOS such that only Windows Boot Manager showed up and the UEFI partition was gone. Put it back in and the UEFI partition returned in BIOS, but it still wouldn't boot nor could I reimage either drive.

So, its going back to Dell Hell which apparently is getting worse. Could only afford the depot shipment plan and the SOB's didn't even want to send me a box. Told me just to put in 'any old box'. Right! Then they can claim it got destroyed in shipment which would not be covered under warranty.

At least I got them to ship me a proper box.

Me and my Dell's. I'm a glutton for punishment.

Wow I just read your recent posts and I couldn't believe it as one minute your looking for case screws and the next one you unbelievably have no computer.

For whatever it's worth, as I know you were sending the unit back to the Dell Depot for repair yet I have the Toshiba XG3 in my 9550 and if there's anything you need me to check such as BIOS or whatever please let me know as I will be more than happy to do so.

You know at least some of what you are going through is remarkably similar to my ordeal trying to install a 512GB Toshiba XG3 in place of the standard PM951 such as booting up and hard drive not being found and then endless loops of system repair. I'd be curious about what the BIOS would show when it didn't boot on battery alone. In my case, the UEFI boot partition seemed to disappear when I took the XG3 out and just tried to boot from the SSD. I wonder if yours has the same issue.

You are so welcome and so right, as just being a computer novice, that in my opinion knows just enough to get by and more importantly not get taken, I just could never thank the GREAT members of the forum(s) for their expertise and especially their precious time and I'm just so truly grateful to notebookreview.com for making it all thankfully possible.

When I received my XPS 15 9550 as a replacement for my 9530 that could no longer be repaired, the invoice read it had a 512GB Samsung PM951 SSD and believe it or not I was very happy as I have always heard over & over again how Samsung was the best. When I checked the device manager it showed that it was in fact a Toshiba THNSN5512PU7, which I only later learned and through this grateful forum that it was an XG3 and a "statistical" better one then the PM951. Well STUPID me before knowing this demanded I get the PM951 instead of the XG3 from Dell and guess what they easily obliged.

Of course later finding out before it arrived that I would be much better off keeping what I already have in the XG3 I sent the PM951 back yet something now tells me that hearing what unfortunately happened to you would have more then likely happened to me yet I thankfully never attempted or made the swap.

I definitely agree with expert members like custom90gt, GoNz0, pressing and etc., that what I do on & with my computer e.g., email, Internet and photo-viewing I would never see or know the difference between them, yet I guess you thought otherwise and I hope it all gets sorted out for you.

    Good Luck & Regards,

Your issue is you are in RAID mode, google how to swap to AHCI then you can install the OCZ driver and the random BSOD's should stop.

So you didn't try the secure erase option in the BIOS?
I would give it a go before you send it to Hell.

I kinda thought I had in knocked when I was able to boot up into the Samsung 840 EVO. When the craziness started after taking out the XG3 and getting the blue screen errors I suspected that I had fried something. I just got the damn box so tomorrow I'll boot it up and try it one more time. Thanks again.

BTW, this is off topic, but does anyone have a good direct number to talk to Microsoft about an activation issue?

Hey all. So i bought the battery off ebay and got it. When i went to have it installed at a repair shop, the guy who is very good with computers had issues with it. First, he unscrewed everything and then took out the old battery and put in the new battery. Once he did that, he turned it on and it did not work and had this strange screen. He then went to bios i believe and noticed my hard drive was not recognized. Its an ssd. So it didn't work. He told me he never seen this message before ever and he is very smart with computers. He turned it off and restarted and did the bios thing and noticed it didn't recognize hard drive. That made no sense this my hard drive works as i used the computer before i brought it to him. He then took the ssd and put it in to his desktop computer like enclosure i believe to test if my hard drive is the issue. It did recognize it. So now im worried because if he takes out the new battery and put in the old battery in, it would show that not recognize hard drive. Well it doesn't show that message but it did not recognize it. Well he took out new battery and put old one in and had the same issues. So now he is confused because he never seen this ever. I said well does that mean my ssd is damaged... because well the last thing i want is for my computer to be damaged and ssd i could always replace it.

He then did a few settings to it and then took a look at the inside of the laptop. He said he doesn't notice anything wrong with it as he took it out the right way. He didn't even touch the hard drive and he said it cannot be hard drive since it recognized on his desktop computer.

So after this, he did some more testing and eventually he noticed when he did the bios thing, it did recognize the hard drive with the old laptop. But he was not going to turn it on as he would have to take it out and put the new battery in. When he put the new battery in, it did recognize it in the setting where you had to scroll down to see the hard drive. Then he powered it off. Then powered it on and it did start up. He said it might be something with the ribbon with the battery but again he does not know why the hard drive didn't recognize. Anyone here had this issue ever when replacing the laptop battery for this?

So now i have the new battery and its in laptop and its charging. Battery seems to be pretty decent.

Does anyone here have tips on how to use this battery with my laptop where i won't wear out the battery? The thing was i bought this laptop over 1.5 years ago or so. Also since this laptop is in an internal battery, i almost always have it plugged in even at 100%. I know with laptops, you are not suppose to do this. But the thing is this laptop is an internal battery. So if had external battery, i wouldn't even connect the battery to it since im using it plugged into outlet almost always. So with this new battery, do you all suggest use it while on battery until it hits a certain percentage? Then plug it back in? If so, what percentage? Because the thing is i use this quad core laptop like a desktop. I always connect it to the outlet. The main reason for this is because if i do not, then when im busy doing something, then say my battery is only 25 minutes, well i need much more time than that. Such as imagine a power outage. So anything like that happens, well i still have at least 1h 30m or maybe 2h with the laptop. The thing is when i use this laptop, i run programs which use a lot of memory and cpu and battery.

So based on this situation, can someone give me advice on how to use this laptop to preserve the battery the best? Because with the old battery, i had maybe 10 minute max before battery and computer turns off. Can someone tell me what settings i do in battery where i conserve battery? The one thing though is i need the brightness to be high or close to the max though. I notice in the bottom right corner, options are best battery, better battery, better performance and best battery. But are there certain settings where you make the battery better besides this? And should i just leave it unplugged and plug it back the moment it hit say 20%? Say once when it hits 100%, unplug it and rinse and repeat? The thing is when im busy on the laptop, i would have to be on it say 8 hours straight many times. So thats why i didn't want to unplug it and say if power outage happened, i only have 15 minutes instead of say 2 hours.

Also what is the battery life for you all when you use it? The thing is even when i got this laptop new, the battery never ever hit say 3 hours i believe. Every laptop i got ever, they advertise say 8 hour battery, its more like 3 or a bit more than that. The only way i could imagine someone even getting 5 hours on this is if everything is set to almost low brightness, you don't run any apps that take much memory and also do not play any video.

Would like input on all of this.

    Upgraded my XPS 15 9550 (4K, i5, 32GB RAM, 256GB, GTX 960M) with the new 97 Wh battery.

Illustration at "battery saver" mode, low brightness, Intel ETU at -0.200V for the CPU.

    batt.jpg

Running -0.200V 24/7. My 4K screen is a huge battery drain.
Need to lower brightness to get decent battery life.
My original battery was done after 1.5-2 years.

Tried the BIOS secure erase option this morning first thing. The BIOS doesn't recognize either drive. I am so screwed.

Oh dear, can you try holding the power button for 30 second until the battery light flashes then wait for it to reset the bios

So I'm confused. Since when does the bios secure erase option work on NVMe drives? AFAIK it only works with sata drives based on my experience with it.

Did you send the unit to the Dell Depot yet or are you still trying things on your end?

    Hi custom90gt,

I found the NBR thread that covers the exact question so I'll point you to it (See Below) as it's truly out of my realm & league.

Yeah like I thought. It doesn't work with NVMe drives, gotta use something else to erase it. I use acronis but that's just because I got it for free after rebate.

Just curious but what year dell xps 15 9550 is this? Also is this a quad core laptop? What processor does it use? And is your battery 3 cell or 6 cell? I got a dell xps 15 9550 laptop bought from 2016 and the battery is not that good and i got replacement. But i don't know how its even possible to get over say 3.5 hours on a quad core laptop. So i assume your is not quad core laptop? How many hours can you get when web browsing or youtubing etc?

Its in the box to go to Dell Hell. The other one now is acting up now----having strange issues with the audio and other things----and both System Restore and System Image fail every time I try which is particularly ominous, so I have to devote my time to that as it is my primary work machine. I've made an image using the trial version of Macrium as Gonz suggested, but I'm not sure what good that will do as I am not sure if its a software or hardware issue. Since I'm running the Toshiba XG3 like I tried to install in the other one, I don't know if that is the issue all of a sudden.

I'm trying to hang on until the new Spring Creator's Update comes out to see if that will install and correct things if its software. That worked for me with the Fall Creator's update on my old L502x. Also, I'm hoping Gonz will update his bloatware free .iso with the new update before I throw in the towel and redo the whole damn thing.

I know how you must feel right now yet don't put too much stock in the System Restore failing, as I had the same exact issue about a month ago when something got messed up in my Outlook and using the repair feature unfortunately wouldn't solve anything. I then figured I would use System Restore and no matter what available date I choose for whatever reason it would not work. I was forced to backup everything needed, hold down the Shift key while choosing Restart and wipe out all partitions and install windows from scratch.

At this moment I couldn't honestly tell you if System Restore will now work or not yet thankfully everything has been working flawlessly for me.

I'm sure one of the great GURU members will come aboard and offer up some sound advice yet all I can unfortunately do is share with you what I did and tell you don't lose too much sleep over this because although it's a biblical saying when you really think about it's definitely true which is, "This too shall pass"

@MikeBravo I don't think I will need to do another ISO as the last one had virtually every driver needed but I will try it and see if I need one, if I do I will stick it on my onedrive again.

As for secure erase, I was going off my 9560 where it does work, I thought it didn't but then spotted the way Dell word the instructions to run s-erase and I had not fully read it so I clicked cancel by accident :)

The following is quick synopsis and what I learned.

    Regards,
    SDeP58

    How battery works:

Lithium ion batteries, which are installed in almost all of the laptops and mobiles now a days have limited shelf life. Which means, whether or not you use the battery, its charge holding capacity will reduce as it gets old.

Also, the batteries have limited number of full charge cycles. That means, number of times you can discharge it completely and charge it back to full is limited. Exact number is unsure, however I have seen batteries to last as long as 2-2.5 years and to run out in as less as 1 year. Its mostly related to usage pattern.

    What degrades battery:

The main reason why battery life reduces can be categorized as under:
    • Lot of deep discharges (as low as 0-3%) to full 100% charge. This means 1 complete charge cycle.
    • High operating temperature.
    • Shelf life. As the battery becomes old it looses its capacity.
    How to charge:

There is no prescribed method to use modern day batteries. You will not notice much difference no matter how you use the battery of your laptop. However you can follow few good practices.
    • You can keep the adapter connected if you use your computer regularly and for resource intensive tasks. However, at times, use the system on battery and charge it when it reaches about 20-30%.
    • Use your laptop in ventilated and cool environments. It will keep the laptop as well as battery healthy.
    • If you are not going to use your laptop for long time, store it at about 40-50% charge.
    • If you feel that battery is not giving enough back up or charge percentage on Windows is incorrect, calibrate the battery. To calibrate, discharge the battery completely, then charge it to 100%. Use the system on battery normally till it discharges then charge it back. This will calibrate the battery.
    • Keep BIOS firmware up to date.

Hi there. Well what percentage of laptop batteries are internal vs external nowadays? Because it seems like at least 90% of batteries are internal now? And why do they do this? So it would be hard for the average person to just unplug and plug in the battery? Back then batteries were plug it in and out and easy. Why did they go with internal batteries?

Okay so for recharging batteries, you would suggest charge it to 100%. Then recharge it back whenever its at 20-30% right? And everytime it hits 100%, use it until 20-30%? So that is the best way to preserve battery? So if the battery is charged 100% and leave it plugged all day etc or even just leave it always plugged in, would this damage the battery much faster? I did this back then since without it full charged, i get maybe 1.5 hours or 2 hour max but then like under 1 hour. And in case of power outage, i don't want to have 15 minutes only as oppose to over 1 hour etc. But i guess i have to do with this if i want the battery to last? The thing is what i do... it does require resource intensive tasks. But if it doesn't then don't connect charger to it always? Is that what you mean?

When you say calibrate, you mean use it until it turns off itself? Then charge it to 100%. But you mean charge it and turn computer on right... then charge it to 100%? Thus you don't mean charge it while its not turned since you don't know when its 100%?

"Anyone? I want to make sure this new battery i got will last good"

OK now I know you will more than likely get insulted even though it's definitely not my intentions at all.

    1. This great grateful notebokreview.com venue is an outlet for many useful things and resources yet although it is thankfully FREE it really only asks a few things of its members and one of them is, "GIVE BACK WHEN YOU'RE HELPED" and that's as easy as one click of your mouse in a Reputation or Like, and definitely excluding me, I notice that you get so consumed in your issue(s) that you Take (Ask) & Take & Take yet you never GIVE BACK and believe me when I say, I cannot believe that I'm the only one that sees this. These grateful members are giving up their personal time to share and hopefully help so at least, GIVE BACK because it definitely goes a long way.

    2. "Anyone? I want to make sure this new battery i got will last good"
Do you know how many people would like GUARANTEES in life?
This is definitely off topic but I will share this, I lost the love of my life at the age of 36 to terminal breast cancer. My wife ate healthy, didn't smoke and led the text book clean life and guess what? She DIED.
Others have done the exact opposite and are still around. There are NO GUARANTEES in life except Death & Taxes and sometimes not in this order. You can do anything suggested, recommended and etc., yet YOU CAN'T CHANGE WHAT WILL BE. Don't anticipate everything and if it should at one point occur then you will deal with it at that time, as we all must. STOP worrying about what DIDN'T happen.

    3. Enjoy the things you gratefully have e.g., significant other, family, friends, co-workers, and the material things and STOP worrying what might be and how to preserve EVERYTHING. Take the words and chorus of the infamous song and listen to them LOUDLY & CLEARLY because they couldn't be said more TRUER about Life and that's,
    Que sera, sera
    Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
    Que sera, sera
    What will be, will be
