Appreciate the encouragement because my machine that's acting up contiues to have new issues such as all my default app settings resetting each time I reboot and man is that a pain. Since the Spring Creator's Update is only a few weeks away I'm just gritting my teeth and hoping it does the trick.

In the meantime, I have to solve the problem of the software for the other machine. Since there is now way to image the SSD outside of the machine, I don't believe there is any NVME to sata usb adapter, and I'm leery about putting it in my machine I'm not sure how I'm going to save it intact which I need to do.

Then there's the issue of the 512 GB XG3 which still has the efi system partition on it that I can't get rid of.

    Sigh.

Your ISO's and stuff is a blessing for us folks getting long in the tooth that don't have the same engergy to to take the long route so it is much appreciated.

    This XPS 15 9550 is from late 2015, I got it refurbished 6 months later. Quad core CPU i5-6300HQ. 11.4V 97Wh Genuine 6GTPY 5XJ28 battery for Dell XPS 15 9560 9550.

The XPS 15 9550 has power hungry components, like the 45 Watt CPU and the screen. Nothing can be done to get great battery life.

To improve battery life: Try undervolting the CPU with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. -0.150 to 0.200 V.
Battery saver mode and lower brightness.
Use laptop on battery to 20% then charge to 80-100.

Look at laptops with the new lower watt quad core CPUs, 15 watt, like i7-8550u. Something like the LG Gram has better battery life but no discrete graphics.

Maybe I get 6-7 hours on varied light usage, surfing and YouTube. Less with more intensive applications.

You know, I think I saw something like this and now that I think of it, nothing of note has occured to the machine except for Windows updates. Hmmm. I guess I'll create a restore point and give it a try. Thanks again.

Now if you can find a cheap external NVME to usb adapter you'll have achieved a hatrick.

No joy. My issue must be more extensive. Running that utility merely left me no default program at all.

So, I wait for the Spring Creator's Update in a few weeks and after that I guess I Gonz it.

If you sign up for the Windows Insider Program you can get a pre-release of it now. I wouldn't normally recommend this, but they are at the stage where they have removed the "build" watermark which typically means its 98% baked and very close to the final version (I have it running on my main 9550 currently).

Having said that I plan on doing a clean install once its released (with full drive wipe) as my hardware setup has changed a fair bit since the previous install.

What a shame with everyone going NVMe that someone still hasn't come up with a reasonable priced adapter so individuals can get their much needed data off their dead laptop.

Just make all these M.2 - USB adapters AHCI & NVMe compatiable at slow speed for the individuals that just want to retrieve their much needed data yet NO their forced to invest in this (See Below), which unbelievably seems to be their only external option other then the desktop pcie route.

I've been an insider since Win10 was in beta. I stopped when it was released. Its an idea, but not knowing what happened, the remaining 2% could make it worse. Appreciate your persistence, but I think I'm going to wait it out.

Does anybody else have trouble with their screens not turning on when resuming from sleep? The laptop is definitely powered on and working, but the screen isn't (4K) and similar with the keyboard?

It isn't possible to have the NVMe protocol at any speed over USB, hence the only thing supporting it is thunderbolt.

I used to be all over the beta insider releases but stuff just didn't work well until it was officially released and software developers release the updates to work with it. Only thing I will do is create the ISO once I know it has gone RTM and give it a try within a few days of release.

My spare 1tb NVMe M.2 SSD has also collected dust waiting for a sensibly priced enclosure that will work any brand

I'd still like to create a system image of the Samsung 840 EVO SSD that I was trying to use to redo the Toshiba XG3 NVMe without putting it back in either of my 9550's. Macrium won't do it-----at least I couldn't figure it out. I read something about the latest editions of Acronis TrueImage being able to. Anyone know for sure?

Hey all. So whenever my laptop turns on, i would sometimes get the message device is not working properly on a certain usb port. Many times i would get that message either early on when i start laptop or later on just suddenly later on anytime Its the 3rd hub on the 4 port usb hub and it was the one that i tried to plug in the iphone recharger in etc which you not suppose to because it takes a lot of power. The other ports seem to work fine. But when i press the button to turn the 3rd usb port off and then power it back on, usually it works. I know this because i always have a usb flash drive stuck to the 3rd port etc.

I want to know, is there any chance the 3rd usb port could cause any damage to my laptop? For example i noticed that my dell xps 15 9550 laptop seems to sometimes not load when i start it up where i have to power it on again. Or it does load up but it takes a very long time to load. Back then it didn't have this issue. But when i plugged the iphone charger into it, i already seem to have that problem already.

But is there a chance that this 4 port usb where the 3rd port is somewhat not functioning correctly, is there any chance it could damage the laptop or not? The thing is im thinking only stick a the usb stick into that 3rd port and do not put anything else in that port? The files in that usb flash drive is there whenever i check it. But im wondering if i should buy a new 4 port usb because of this? Or is this not necessary at all? Again, my main concern is could this usb hub potentionally damage my laptop since its always connected to it since i need the ports for my mouse, keyboard, usb flash drive etc.

Also has anyone here had their dell xps 15 9550 take a very long time to start up or it either not start up and you have to power it off and power it on again? I had this happen maybe 2 months ago where you turn it on and have to power off and power on again. I had to do this a few times only. But almost everytime it seems whenever i power it on, it takes a very long time to start up. I have a ssd and i do not know why it takes a while to start up. Thats not that big of a deal but that is a bit concerning.

Latest News on Dells 9570 and 2-in-1

"Some of our expectations regarding the XPS 15 9570 such as the upgraded CPU and GPU and full speed Thunderbolt 3 have indeed been met while others such as the awkward webcam placement and incorporation of new design aesthetics do not appear to be addressed."

"The Dell XPS 15 9570 will be available in May 2018 at a starting price of US$999."

After reading all the information on Dell's upcoming 9570 refresh and 2-in-1 and seeing that there's really nothing there for me I decided to call them up and yes 3 separate times, with unbelievably getting 3 separate quotes on a warranty extension, and finally getting one for $218.00 for a 2 year On site warranty with a $50 coupon until 8/2018 as well.

At this point I really have no need for their $50 coupon and I wanted them to keep the coupon and take the $50 off the price yet unfortunately it was a "no can do." :(

I was just hanging out and waiting to see if they were in fact going to use a 5K display on their refresh yet as others have mentioned time and time again that 4K is even overkill on a 15" display, which I personally disagree with, as I really like the 4K on my 9550 and the great detailed graphics it produces, yet on the other hand, I do believe 5K on a 15" display is in reality and on Windows is and would be a bit too much.

I've been very lucky, fortunate or whatever with my 9550 getting the Toshiba XG3 NVMe SSD instead of the Samsung PM951, which was what was listed in the configuration, and thankfully I have had absolutely no issues at all with the unit so I'll just keep what I got and check out what others got coming. ;)

Just seen Dell's released a Thunderbolt firmware update (4.26.11.001, A08). Testing before and after installing the update it's finally fixed the HDMI port after the last Thunderbolt firmware broke it.

How did you do that udate? It fails on my 9550, complaining about not detecting the latest Thunderbolt Controler driver installed. Which is not true, I have the last one from 10/2017, and when I retry installing it only offers 'Remove ' as option.

Did Dell forget to upload a newer TB driver?

This is a very difficult yet easy question to try and answer depending on a few questions first.

    1. Did you verify that your modem/router is in fact active and showing the necessary indicator lights and your service is not down? If it does not problem solved. If it does move on to question 2.
    2. Did you try to access the WiFi through another device e.g., cell phone, tablet etc.?
    3. If you can connect via another device did you check in your right task-bar to see if your Wifi icon, usually next to the battery icon, is active with no yellow or red indicators?

I didn't get that message when updating mine... I'm on version 16.3.61.275 A03 which says last updated 30/Nov. Maybe try downloading it again? If it still doesn't work maybe remove it, restart, and try installing again?

Hey all. I turned on my windows 10 xps 15 9550 laptop right now. I got the message i cannot sign into my account and now everything looks like its reset. Most of my programs are not showing up on desktop. Like imagine i have like 30 something applications on desktop, there are like 12 or so.

Can someone tell me how to fix this? I do not have a password on my laptop for startup.

There is nothing show up in my downloads or documents. I'm freaking out right now.
