He left as it was starting to install the OS + Dell apps. He left rather abruptly tbh. I should have taken a closer look before he left, but that's still no condition to leave a laptop in. The metal cover (backside) of the screen is actually bowing out; I hope it doesn't damage the screen.

I ha the exact same situation with my L501x, a Dell Technician came to insert the bluetooth that was left out of my system, he had never seen an XPS 15 before and I had to show him the online manual because I was scared at the way he was trying to pull my system apart without knowing exactly what he was doing. Installing the bluetooth module involved stripping down the entire machine including screen, keyboard, palm rest, and dismantling the base of the machine. I was left with a bent palm rest and a damaged screen bezel with a large scrape in it from a screwdriver.

I would email Michael Dell and bypass all of the people you have dealt with up to now. You should accept a fully working and non damaged brand new replacement system only. The "technicians" Dell use are sub contracted out and not actually Dell employees.

Does it void the warranty to change the HDD yourself?

No, it does not void the warranty.

But it does go void if you manged to break the laptop during the replacement process or somewhere in the future that act was the cause of failure.

I'm glad (well, you know what I mean) to hear I'm not alone in this. I'm not sure if emailing the man himself would get me anywhere, but I guess this is something I should really stick on Dell. Any advice as to a department/person to contact that might get me somewhere quickly? It depresses me that a simple HDD failure led to this.

Can anyone who used to have a StudioXPS comment on positives/negatives of the L502x? I am wondering mainly about the cooling (SXPS was atrocious, obviously, but I see the XPS 15 has a vent on the side and NOT behind the screen getting blocked), and the display. I realize it's not true RGB but it's somewhere in between the WLED and Full RGB right? Thanks.

it's just shy of the SXPS16's RGBLED screen in terms of color saturation, according to notebookcheck.

After dancing around for an hour or so with Dell support staff on the phone from somewhere in the Middle East who transferred me 4 times in under an hour (must be a record) I gave up and made a follow-up of my service # to an email address referenced in the email Dell service dept. sent me. Needless to say, it has about 11 pics attached and a lot of caps and bold words, not to mention being one of the longer emails I have ever written. I'm either getting a new replacement/full refund or I'm going to go to the nearest Dell repair center and set the laptop on fire in the lobby. Wish me luck.

I had gotten a monitor from the outlet once that had an entire row of pixels stuck on green. Took about 2 hours on the phone and half a dozen transfers for them to set up an RMA

Not a record, when I had a problem with my last laptop, I called into Dell in the US, who transferred me to Dell Canada (because their offices open earlier?), out to India, transferred five more times, then sent to a voice mail that promptly hung up on me because I reached another department that was closed for the day. All this in forty five minutes. :(

I did. First rep I called transferred me to small business and I knew this would just be a show so I hung up and called again and the second person told me I needed to pay so I flipped out because I was told that the disk would be included with the laptop, anyways she then transferred me to a customer service rep who took care of me

Disk already shipped and should be here tomorrow. I went ahead and wrote a email to the manager of the rep over the phone who helped me and basically thanked them and forwarded the email to them of the first rejection.

Anyways here is what I wrote to him after I received the email

    and this was his reply

even though it specifically states "Requests are limited to one (1) set of backup discs per system purchased."

Why did I fill out the form again?

Well I sure remember now why I built my computer after the disaster that was the asus g2s-b1...

You are only allowed one backup if you originally bought the discs with your order, and have lost or damaged them. If you didnt pay for the discs in your order, you will have to pay to get them now.

They must of stopped giving them out for free after a large volume of calls about it.

    Guess their tolerance grew thin.

Anyways you could of made your own recovery disk via the dell backup, which you should of created when you first turned on. Not sure if there is a difference due to that they allow options of what kind.

I know the user created HP Recovery Disk are the exact copy as their paid recovery disks.

A bit of an update. Without having to talk to Michael Dell (rather, Rashad. Didn't catch his last name), I will be getting a brand new unit in two weeks. From now on, I will do my own damned repair work.

For Sale: I have 2 brand new Push2TV Netgear PTV1000 wireless adapters. I want to offer these to fellow L502x people before I put them on ebay or elsewhere. One has never been opened, the other opened just for inspection. These use the"Intel Wireless Display" software and hardware on the L502x to wireless push your laptop screen image to any LCD or TV.

PM if interested and we can work out a good price shipped from Phoenix.

I know this isn't the place to mention this, but I'm not much for virtual rules.

Thanks for your words of wisdom before. The guy I talked with from Dell told me after viewing pictures I sent in that he had never seen a computer so damaged from a HDD repair. Makes you wonder if these technicians are actually "certified".

Well I took video but the lighting sucked so you can't see anything. I don't think I will redo it. Basically I used a flat head screwdriver to push the keyboard top out a little. From there I grabbed it and carefully lifed it up. Left side came out easier the the right. Never removed the connections. 4 screws to remove the drive, 4 to take off the mount on the side. screw it back in and once your done just make sure to push hard down on the top you just took off. Should snap in a bunch of times. Put the screw in and then the battery on the bottom and your done. I'm glad I didn't pay someone to possibly screw it up.

Dual band usage pretty much. Not much advantage in speed against a 1030 or 1000 unless an extra 8mbits is an improvement. No advantage in gaming :p.

Also, the PTV2000 is the one of those models that can do wireless display at 1080p. And I think they just recently have HDCP support (Bluray support) from the newer Intel Display Driver and the Intel WiDi 2.1. Both of these need to be updated in your system.

Dual-band! If you're living in an apartment building where there are 10-30 in-range 2.4GHz networks, the ability to run yours at 5GHz is nice...

After half a dozen calls yesterday and the day before, they "found" it and it was over-nighted. Overall I really like it, just hard to get used to the size compared to my 14in ASUS, and there are two small marks next to the mouse pad that wont come off. I think they are scratches.

has anybody tried to calibrate the screen in that lappy? I am using photoshop quite a lot and it seems like colour reproduction there is far better than in other aplications. I know that PS is using adobeRGB and it is a colour managed software (windows 7 - sRGB) so my pictures look alright in photoshop. But I want the same result in other apps. is that actually possible to have the same good colour reproduction in windows and in PS at the same time since they are using 2 different colour profiles - one adobeRGB and the other sRGB

Got my L502x this weekend and very pleased with it, but I'm wondering whether it is possible to access the numeric keypad keys with it. My old XPS M1530 let you do this, for example Fn+U for numeric keypad 4, Fn+Delete for numeric keypad break. However, L502 doesn't seem to have this capability.

Is there any way I can enter keys from a numeric keypad? If you're wondering why, I use several apps which have useful keyboard shortcuts involving keys on the numeric keypad.

Loving this thing now. Have music playing, Windows Live Messanger up, downloading my entire Steam library, printing from notepad, web browsing, and have monitoring programs up. No slow downs, been going for about 2 hours like this, and still have 1.5 hours left on the battery.

Wow after reading 124 pages didn't find the answer...would appreciate if someone who has the XPS 15 connected to 2 external monitors could tell me what the max resolution that can be pushed through the hdmi and mindisplayport. I'm hoping to run 2 monitors with at least 1920 x 1080 resolution. Thanks in advance.

I'll be honest, I didn't do a lot of searching to see if this has been asked before but there was no way I was going to sift through this entire thread. Does anyone else's XPS shut itself down when sleeping/hibernating? I close the lid and then when I come back to the computer a couple of hours later it is off. This happens when it is plugged in and when it is not plugged in. Any help and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

I've had a random shutdown happen one time after I put it to sleep. It wasn't anything to do with my power plan settings, though, and I don't allow hibernation. When I turned it back on, I had a warning that my computer was not shut down properly. I could never figure out what happened, even after poking around in the Event Viewer logs. Fortunately, it's never happened again.

    Hi All,

Last week I offered 2 Push2TV wireless adapters (PVT1000) to fellow L502x owners but only got one PM. So I put them on ebay. I hope they go to a Dell XPS 15 owner. The auction lists some good info about this technology.

This is the closest to what I am experiencing. I am getting either an error windows didn't shut down normally do you want to start in safe mode, reboot normally, etc.... or I get the resuming windows thing. This happens all the time though. Like 90 percent of the time when I shut my lid, within 2 hours it does this.

    Hey guys,

I'm a new member on these forums (nice to meet you guys) and due to [thread=584184]certain circumstances,[/thread] be a potentially new-owner of a Dell XPS 15 (L502) w/o an upgraded display panel.

I was able to track down the model and make of the 1080 RGBLED display, but how hard is it, exactly, to replace the laptop display? Has anyone tried this?

Webcam Help - Freezes on HD?

Does your webcam work when set to 1280 x 720 HD 2.64? Whenever I set mine to this HD resolution the entire app freezes and must be forcible closed.

I've read in some very old posts it should be in the C>Program Files>Dell. folder? Mine is installed in C>Program Files(x86) folder. If you have an OEM installation (not a clean install) can you please check to see where the Dell Webcam application is installed?

Here is the error screen that helps you shut it down:

My previous 2008 XPS 13 had an incredible image from the camera. This new webcam app/camera is very grainy compared to that.

That's very weird that it's happening so often... You could try configuring your computer to create a memory dump when it crashes, which may give clues to what's going wrong, but I don't know how well this would work, if at all, since the computer is sleeping when it crashes.

Rogo, I just recorded a test video for my first time, using that HD setting...no problems. It was a short video, though, only 10 seconds. Does the program crash upon selecting the HD setting, or during recording? My program is also installed in the Program Files (x86) folder, in case that's important to know (clean install).

How much are they selling it for, if you don't mind me asking?
