    Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the help. Dell Webcam freezes as soon as I select the HD setting. There's one more thing. In many of the forums people talk about Dell Webcam v2.00.39 but I only see in 2.00.35 in "Dell My Downloads" and that's the version I have installed. Nowhere on any of Dell sites is a version ..39 available. Can you check your version please? Hit the ? mark in the upperright and select About..

I have version 2.00.35, too...I have no idea what could be causing your program to freeze, but, if I think of anything, I'll let you know.

Ok I figured it out, it was quite easy actually. Uncle google helped me out lol
    However...
I just ordered myself a new Spyder 3 Elite with v4 of their software which apparently is capable of calibrating LED displays quite well. I noticed that icc profile (for which you can find the link in the first post in this thread) has been created using Spyder2Express which, from what Ive heard, is not working properly with LED backlight displays. I can imagine it has been tweaked after calibration so obviously it still gives better result than with factory settings applied. However I am hoping that it will give me some better outcome if Ill use a newest version of this tool. Ive read on some forums that only pro and elite version will calibrate LED display properly. I mean well you cant expect miracles but since I am doing a lot of work with photography and graphic design - I personally must be as close to perfection as possible. Considering this budget it is a good start I think :) If anybody interested I will post a new icc profile made by spyder 3 elite to download.

I am able to do 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 on miniDP and HDMI simultaneously.

Edit: Not only that i can even use the laptop's internal display at the same time. So i have three 1080p panels being driven at the same time.

They may have sent you the wrong screen.

For one thing, can you easily see the individual pixels? When running at 1366x768, do the pixels seem to line up with the image or is there any blur?

I have the GT540M and I cannot find a way of getting anti-aliasing to work in Batman Arkham Asylum, in the settings menu it says 'nvidia 80000+ required' and wont let me change the option. I'm almost certain it has something to do with optimus, but I'm not sure exactly what, as I have the dedicated card set to run in the game and in the launcher where the settings are set.

Has anyone come across this problem and solved it?

Also I've downloaded the colour profile from the beginning of the thread, but I'm unsure of how to install/set it, can anyone help there?

    Thanks, Lloyd.

I think you were trying to figure out how to install the ICC color profile that's attached to the 1st post of this thread. There's a few ways.

    1) After you download the file to a folder, just right click and select "Install"... or

    2) Type "Color Management" in the Start>Search area. Open up the panel and see below.

    3) Right click your desktop and select "Screen Resolution". Select Avanced Settings > Color Managemet Tab > Color Management

    MANUAL INSTALLATION OF ICC PROFILE
Make sure your "Generic PnP Monitor" is selected in the dropdown
Check the "Use My Settings" box (this will allow you to add a ICC profile)
Go down below and select "Add"
Select the "Browse" option in the lower left.
Find you ICC file and then click OK. Make sure's it your default profile. You are done.
You can go back to the original profile be deselcting the "Use My Settings" checkbox.

    Hey everyone,

I am now using my brand new L502X which got delivered this morning, I have noticed a few changes with the keyboard function compared to L501X, also I noticed the new one is slightly heavier then the old one. But overall I am happy with the system.

    Dell Webcam Question:
Do you have 35 or 39?
    v2.00.35 or version 2.00.39

I need some Dell Webcam help. Which version do you have installed on you L502X? Click the help icon (?) in the upper right of the app to find out.

My app freezes whenever I select the HD camera resolution at 720 H.264. I then discovered the two slightly different versions. Dell "My Downloads" only offers v35 and is from August 2010. There is some mention of v39 but can only find this on generic download websites. I have no idea what the difference might be between the two. I'm also curious if your app is in the Program Files or Program Files(x86) folder.

Thank you very much! that was what I was looking for. Just a side note I think I changed some of the settings in the 'Advanced' tab in Color Management when trying to get the profile to work, particularly the first two options under the 'Windows Color System Defaults' title, what settings should be selected here?

    Thanks, Lloyd.

    Dell Webcam Software Bug:
    ISSSUE RESOLVED

I figured this out. I have my screen set to display at 125% so I can read things easier. Dell Webcam software will only operate in the 1280 x 720 HD H.264 resolution if it has the ability to show the entire video frame in the window. If the application is re-sized in a way where the full video of 1280x720 can't be displayed in the window, it freezes the application. In this case, the application must be "Maximized" so the full video frame can be viewed.

Most wil have their screen resolution set to 100% and won't experience this issue. In this case, the Dell Webcam software will open the application in a size that's large enough to fully display the 1280 x 720 video inside the framed window.

This Dell Webcam version 2.00 doesn't seem to have the feature of recording video when it senses motion. What a great security tool that is no more. This app seems worse than the previous version - unless you need dozens of effects. It's also very grainy.

You can assign a color profile to virtually anything. Assing it to the display, a different ICC profile for your printer, another one for a remote LCD, etc. Just go into Color Management and click on the tabs. It willl become very clear how it works. Think of a color profile as being assinged to "devices" instead of applications or desktops. I believe those who use PhotoShop and similar assign the profiles to specific jobs or images, not so much the entire application. Google will give you much info on this subject.

Is this a big deal? What is better matte or glossy?

Just to offer some help to others trying to get the calibrated profiles to work, it's a possibility that if the profile is still not loading even after everything in color management has been set-up properly, there is a software conflict preventing this from loading. Going into 'msconfig' (search in start menu) and disabling 'NVIDIA Hotkey Service' under the start-up tab and rebooting has solved this problem on two of my laptops. Once I did this the calibrated profile simply loaded as windows was loading up (you actually see the colors change).

    Lloyd.

P.S I'm deciding between the L502x and the L702x. The 17" has a GT 555m (up to ~50% better performance in games then the GT 540m) and actually runs a little cooler/quicker (both have the same i7 cpu), it also has that extra bay for an SSD future upgrade, but the 15" has that beautiful screen, deeper bass, better speaker positioning, optimus (better battery life) and slimmer, lighter profile (no 9 cell sticking out).

I'm just not sure which features I'm going to miss more when i send one back. This will be replacing my desktop, but I've never had a laptop before so I've little experience to help decide.

    Any opinions?

As I promised a couple of days ago, here is a link to a new profile which I have created using spyder3elite with version 4 of their software. Please note that previously I was using a profile which you can find in the first post! Previous one was created with spyder2express which did not support wide gamut screens. This one apparently has, and here are my first conclusions (comparing to spyder2express profile):
--> saturation and contrast changed slightly - however in combination with my epson paper profiles it gives more accurate result when printing
--> skin tones improved hell a lot! no doubt about that!
--> highlight and shadow details - visible improvement
--> black and whites - here I have noticed the BIGGEST difference, my back and white photos are actually looking black and white, not sort of blue-ish which was a nasty pain when it comes to printing photos.

    Now important information:
I have calibrated my screen using High ambient light level as the environment I am currently in is really bright (lots of windows and lots of light!). So I set my brightness to almost max (about 90%). If you are working in dimmed environment then I can create another profile with brightness set to 120 instead of 200.
Please whoever will use this profile, could you kindly get back here and share with your opinions. Here is the link:
File name: spyder3elite502x.7z File size: 1.85 KB

Right click on the desktop, select Nvidia Control Panel and then "Manage 3D settings". The first tab you'll see is for Global Settings. I have mine set on Auto-select, which it comes up with as default.

Now select the "Program Settings" tab and you'll be able to choose the programs in the drop-down list that Nvidia recognizes, and choose in the drop-down list below that which GPU you want to use.

You can also right-click on an application's or game's icon, select the "Run with Graphics Processor" and choose in that list.

    Good luck!

00lloyd, if you're using your notebook as a desktop replacement, why not go with the 702? They both have Optimus, which for a DTR isn't that big a deal as it will be plugged in most of the time.

And I'd check the L702 forums about the screen quality and sound quality. I don't know if the 702 is worse than the 502. I do know my 502 is a fantastic computer. I've had absolutely no issues with it, and I've torn it apart to replace the HDD with an SDD and repaste the CPU and GPU.

I had ordered the new Alienware M17X R3, but changed it to the L502 because I wanted to ba able to travel with it. I feel the L502 is the perfect blend of performance and portability.

Can't wait to hear what people think. I personally have my screen set at about 45% brightness right now, and sometimes lower than that, so I'd really appreciate the lower light profile. I wonder how different it would be? Anyway, thanks for doing this.

    I LOST BRIGHTNESS???

Wow, we did a clean install on this L502X and now have lost that intense brightness we all have with the 1080p RGB screens. Even at maximum it now doesn't come close to previous brightness levels. Any ideas? We used all the latest drivers and the A05 Bios.

Just to clarify, the Function key brightness controls change the power to the LED's, similar to the "Backlighting" setting on a LCD TV. Changing the brightness/contrast level in a software color profile (Intel or Nvidia) is something completely different. Something appears to have changed the power level to the LED's. Either way, none of these settings have been touched.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It would seem this is a "Power Options" setting but we can't see anythign wrong.

Tried the profile. The first few seconds gave me a " WTH is going on" thought because I had gotten used to the OP's profile. Switching back and forth between the OP's and this profile with pictures and videos samples, I'm leaning more toward the OP's color profile. Going to give a little more time before deciding which I like more.

Thank you to everyone who posted and contributed. This forum especially the dell XPS sub forum is very kind and accommodating.

You know, I feel like a complete dunce, but I follow the steps to change the color profile-- I make sure the monitor is selected, make sure it's using my settings, I make the new profile my default-- and nothing changes. It looks exactly the same.

    Try that:
    1. Type colour management via Start/Search, "colour management" window will open
    2. go to the tab advanced and click Change system defaults button in the bottom left corner (must have admin rights), "colour management defaults" window will open
    3. now again go to advanced tab and untick the box "use windows display calibration"
    4. now close that window and go back to the window mentioned in step2 ("colour management")and untick the same box there (same tab "advanced").
    5. now go back to the first tab "devices" and tick the box "use my settings for this device", this will enable "Add" button. Make sure you have selected your monitor from the drop down list!
    6. Your new profile should appear in the "Profiles associated with this device" list. Select your profile and click "set as default profile" button
    7. Now you should be done.

Also make sure that your graphics driver is not "trying" to control colours. If you got nVidia then right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA control panel. Go to display --> adjust desktop colour settings and select "other applications control colour settings".

Please note that you may not see the EXTREME difference at the first place, especially if you are just messing around the desktop. If you want to see the difference it makes, then before you start loading your new profile, open up some photo in some colour managed software and as soon as you load your profile watch how the picture changes. In case when YOUR PROFILE HAS BEEN LOADED CORRECTLY and you still can't see any difference then that means you shouldn't bother calibrating your screen cause you simply don't need it.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions and good luck!

I would be interested in the lower ambient light spyder3elite color profile.
I usually work at 50% brightness. I am having difficulty evaluating the profile posted (created at 90%) as it appears to reduce contrast at 50% (or brightness?) significantly. Thank you for your post!
