I have used this system for like thrice without battery for about 4 hours each time...and the battery shows a wear level of 3% in mere 10 days...some light on this issue too would help...
    Thanks...

Try downloading ThrottleStop livinsaint. It will display all temps, and you can also force the CPU multiplier. It's actually quite handy if you feel like boosting the speed and forcing TurboBoost on - it gave me a few extra FPS on some CPU intensive games. Or, alternatively, you can force it to reduce the multiplier so it only runs at like 900 MHz. Saves battery power. These can all be saved to profiles and changed on the fly.

Unfortunately it doesn't have the best display options. If you want to monitor temps you have to either hover over the program in the taskbar, or open her up.

I don't know if it's "normal" but it looks terrible in the picture. Everyone on here routinely advises people NOT to get the 1366x768 screen. It's apparently low end, even for low end.

Sometimes you get what you pay for :/

you cant see your gpu because optimus is using the intel one, run it while using the nvidia gpu and it'll show up.

Ouch... you're asking way too much of any 720p display let alone the questionable quality of the XPS 15's. I'd try to swap for one of the 1080p B+RGLED displays... especially for someone coming from an SXPS16 with RGBLED. Almost everything else would be a downgrade, but the B+RGLED of the XPS 15 fills the bill nicely as the colors are just as vivid, the blacks are blacker and the whites are MUCH whiter. Overall I think the XPS 15's 1080p is a decent upgrade from the SXPS16's.

Hmmm ThrottleStop will show the GPU temp while exclusively using the Intel chip...

But Sam I used this very program (version 1.16) with the same CPU GPU combination...and it used to work...its just after I installed the 1.18 (latest) version that I started facing this issue...
With any other program I am just a bit susceptible..cause the ease and clear interface with CPUID is really nice...so..?

Ah I gotcha. I thought you meant GPU temps aren't available regardless of the monitoring program.

hmm, strange, well you can either use a different program or go back to 1.16 i guess..
I do like CPUID aswell as its even got ram temps on it!

    Hello friends,

I am new here (This is my first post). I had ordered a dell xps 15 L502x with core i7 2670 QM, but I am still not able to find that processor on the intel website.

Can anybody provide me a link to the processor specifications. I wrote to the intel customer care and support but they seemed to be unaware of this processor and now I had a feeling that dell is selling the overclocked core i7 2630 QM.

Nowhere on the US Dell site do I see 2670QM as an option for CPU. Are you sure this is what you ordered?

    Yes I am sure.

It is listed as core i7 2670QM 2.20 Ghz with turbo boost up to 3.1 Ghz

You can check it at dell.co.in

There must be something on the Intel website (found nothing). These are available from around 6th September here (i guess, maybe earlier).

I had never seen an intel product available in india first then the rest of world. This is a odd thing.

So, this is a good thing I guess. The price of my laptop is around $20 (1000 INR) less than that of August plus I am getting a processor comparable with Core i7 2720QM.

Thanks! But is is odd that this is available only in india. (without any information on intel website)

Yes...it works perfectly well with the 1.16 version of CPUID...thats so strange..a newer version is incompatible with the latest technology and an older version is still compatible...
Is it so? or am I missing something...?

I was wondering if anyone who uses thier XPS 15 R2 for gaming has had the same experience I had.

My system has i7 2720 mobile intel chipset, the Nvidia 540m video card, 8gb of ram and the standard 640gb hard drive.

I have had system lock ups and poor performance issues with playing games WOW, RIFT, and Starcraft 2 for months. From what I have read in these forums and others the rig I have should be able to play these games at medium settings with few problems.

I first called up dell tech support when I bought the laptop a few months ago and was told sorry buddy your programs are the issue not the system as all the self diag memory checks temp checks etc are running normal.

So after months checking with the video game companies sending error logs to them etc they all are saying its an unknown video card related error thats causing my lock ups and slow fps performace.

So I called dell back 2 days ago and this was the response they gave me... They stated oh yes we know about some games having problems with the Optimus technology on your video card but we can fix this by updating some settings... The rep then remoted in and wanted to force all my games to play on the Intell HD graphics processor vs. using the video card I paid good money for!

I mean that cant be an acceptable resolution in my opinion.

Has anyone else had crashing/performance issues with the optimus run nividia cards? I think Dell is blowing smoke that I should just "not use" the Nvidia card. That is a horrible solution as the intergrated graphics while not bad are easily going to lose alot of performance and FPS from using a dedicated graphics card.

I am going to call back tonight and see if I cant get a supervisor or something to force a 3rd party tech to look at my system because I cant see paying for a system with a video card then not being able to use it for its intended function.

Any advice or others who have had similar responses from dell or issues with thier laptop?

I have Purchased the dell XPS 15 l502x one month back. It has 720p (1366x768) resolution. I want to change or upgrade the display with 1920x1080 B+RG LED resolution through DELL INDIA. I have asked the dell rep. but he was uncleared about this thing. Can it be possible to upgrade the Display.......???

Create a new 'high performance' power plan and disable turbo boost (set all processor management settings to 99%) and see if that helps for you, also you won't need turbo boost for games, games will run fine without it and less heat for your laptop.

Thanks I will try that out. I am willing to try anything at this point and have not played with any of the power settings. So far I have not had any real heat issues just the games crashing my entire laptop or running at super slow FPS for the resources my system has available.

If the hardware checks all come back good and I even tried a clean reinstall of windows 7, complete hard drive reformat, and step by step driver reinstallation yet the problem persists does anyone agree that replacing the motherboard/built in video card is the only thing left for me to try to get dell to do?

I actually am working overtime this saturday so have not tried the power setting advice but I will tonight. One thing I can tell you is just search these forums or other forums talking about this dell model. You can find tons of owners stating you should be able to run games on the video card with no problems and thousands of customers are doing so and actively posting postive results.

Dont accept thier advice to just "not use the video card" as a fix. I will be calling them back to lobby for a replacement motherboard/video card (since they are sodered together) at dells expense if updating the power settings does not fix the problem.

Great!! I've spent the past two months looking for a solution to this problem. First it was just one game then another, until it just started affecting every game I have.

My biggest gripe is that dell has been very unhelpful with this. Every thing on this laptop works great, and i was very satisfied with it until my games started freezing

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed I just adjusted my power settings, but i haven't had a chance to test it out

Good airflow? With the 6 cell battery the back end does not sit up as high, so airflow is reduced. Also while running on battery and using the stock "Dell" power plan, under process performance management/system cooling policy/ On battery is set to passive.

I am cautiously optimistic I just got around to making a custom power plan and throttled the CPU max unplugged and plugged in to 99% CPU usage and so far no crashes. I only tested it around 1.5 hours but that is 30 mins longer than any previous sessions playing games on my L502X with no major slowdowns or crashes.

Went on task bar used more power options > Create a power plan > High performance > Create > then go back into it click Change advance settings > Processor power management. I updated both battery and plugged in max settings to no higher than 99% as suggested.

So far so good I will test it further before I am convinced its really going to work since for months diff drivers and settings have never fixed it but so far so good.

But I am with you very disappointed with Dell tech support from saying nothing is wrong to just saying do not use the video card its pretty pathetic. Power settings who knew hopefully this will stick and work long term!

Ok cool, i just did the same with the high performance plan. i haven't gone to the bios to turn off the turbo boost, but i was able to play for about an hour, with out any problems. I still need to play some more to make sure everything is ok.

I hope the problem dose not persist. I have just heard some horror stories about folks who had to send their PC's to be fixed, and came back worse

What did he lie about? Can you post your specs and let us know what he said he was giving you? The build date is pretty recent so thats a plus. Not sure what yr asking about the hard drive.
Congrats on your purchase though! These laptops rock! I've had no problems with mine but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Bummer,
I watched two 1-hr netfix vids, a full movie using powerdvd, and about a couple hrs browsing internet while testing my 9 cell power duration.

But if you buy a 9 cell, you'll then have mega time on both batteries!

try adjusting yr power optionds if you havn't already.

On Battery Saver or Balanced, if my resolution is at the lowest point (still really bright) i get at least 6-7 hours. I think that is great out of a higher end performing laptop.

I also had problems but my resolution ended up causing more issues. Thank god I have a back up laptop to use thought not as nice as my L502x.

I still was having lock ups although the system was lasting longer by throttling the power settings it still ended up with crashes.

So after hours arguing with tech support they agreed to overnight a new motherboard/video card to me. Well the "technitian" came in yesterday did a pretty swift replacement and everything seemed ok and passed his idiotic checks so he left. I sit down with my lap top and the first thing I try is to see the settings on my replaced nvidia card...

"Error no Nvidia hardware can be detected" ... they put in a different motherboard with a TOTALLY deffective or incorrectly installed card. So frustrating sorry to take up so much of the owners lounge forum posts with this stuff when most of us and myself included love this laptop but man I need it working.

I am going to Fedex it back to dells repair Depot and pray they can fix it without giving me to bad of parts but its been a frustrating week dealing with tech support.

Hi all, I just got my Dell XPS 15 L502x a couple weeks ago (Sept 2011), and I've been kind of frustrated with it.
When I first got my computer, it used to start up and load the login screen fairly quickly. Even after certain Windows Updates, it was okay. However, there seems to be one particular Windows Update after which my computer kinda hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen at boot up, and takes a particularly long time to load the login screen (usually after the login screen loads, everything is normal)

I've removed all the programs that I don't want or need through the control panel. I've removed McAfee and installed Ad-Aware, and Avast Antivirus (the free versions).

I'm not really that technologically knowledgeable, so if there is any information you need from me to be able to tell me more about my problem just let me know!
