It seems like I read many horror stories about Dell's tech support. However, I have had no problems with my Dell XPS 15 L502x, except for the fact that they forgot to give me a dongle that would allow me to connect a regular antenna to my computer (I have the TV tuner card). Therefore, I went to their chat support site and requested the dongle. Within thirty minutes, they agreed to ship one to me, no questions asked. I received it the next morning.

In addition, my grandpa purchased a Dell XPS L702x laptop, and it had several lines going across the screen. As a result, my grandpa called Dell, and they agreed to send over a technician with a replacement screen. He was a certified Dell technician and did seem to be knowledgeable in how to disassemble the laptop and replace the screen.

Hey guys, is there any solution to unpark the cores? I've tried editing the registry, but the resource monitor still shows four of my cores as parked.

    :(

This would cause your computer to use more power and create more heat when idle. There is no performance to be gained from doing this, and there is a possibility of losing performance as what you are trying to do may disable turbo boost.

Honestly I would just leave it like it is as they are doing what they were designed to do.

Hi guys, I am finally an owner of an 1502x! I am really enjoying the experience. I have no complaints as of yet besides the multitouch capabilities are a bit lacking (2 finger scrolling is not very smooth imo) but besides that the laptop is a beast. The speakers and screen are going to spoil me...I will never look another laptop the same again. Hopefully i will get some video games to test out the gaming abilities. :)

I've found that using the nVidia card for browsing makes the two finger scrolling slightly more responsive. Haven't yet tried to see how big the battery drain is then though...

Called Dell Support about my Game freezing issue. They told me it's normal for a laptop to crash during games. They told me that if I wanted to game, I should get a desktop. They also said I should shutdown my laptop after 2 hours of gaming to let it rest.

Kind of ridiculous imo. They're refusing to fix this problem.

Is $834 for an i5-2410m xps 15 with the 1080p screen and backlit keyboard a good deal or should I wait longer?

I think it's a pretty good deal. You save around 155 dollars if you were to configure on the base model. And i'm assuming you're in the US, there's a 75 dollar coupon for xps 15s. Which comes to a savings of about 230 dollars.

I ended up buying a refurbished one with all the same stuff + a blu-ray player,540m, and the 9cell battery for $800 with a 20% off. I hope nothing is wrong with it XD.

Also Q_Q I was so overjoyed to find a laptop with the specs I was looking for, that I forgot the 9 cell battery was fat. I'd rather have the 6 cell so that it is easier to fit into my backpack. Oh well not a deal breaker.

I am having a problem with playback on *some* 1080p mkv files ..played avatar 1080p 21gb mkv file using both km player and vlc player..Basically, during high motion scenes, the video gets stuttery,Even during slower motion scenes, there's some noticeable stutter in things like waves, of peoples' lip movement, etc. It seems to happen primarily with large mvks (>10GB), and I can't seem to fix it..

    Any ideas?

    my specs:
    core i7-2670qm,1080p b+rgled,8gb ram,1gb nvidia 525m

Tim93, there's a thread somewhere here that tells you how to unpark all cores.
It's said that doing so will reduce "micro-stuttering".
I followed the procedure, and now all eight "cores" are unparked. However, I can't say I noticed a big difference, although I never noticed the "micro-stuttering" prior to the change. I just got bored one night and gave it a try. I still get eight hours or so of web browsing, and no noticeable increase in heat.
If I find the old thread, I'll post it.

edit: I see you've already found it. Don't know why it's not working for you, and I can't remember exactly what I did.

It doesn't use modern ways to decode video. With Potplayer, or MPC. You can use DXVA which uses your Integrated Graphics to decode video.

I use the PowerDVD 9.6 app, plus the patch that came out a couple weeks ago, and enable the Nvidia GPU. Through the start menu you find PowerDVD and right click > Select Nvidia as the GPU. When the app opens we just minimize it so it never closes, always stays on the Nvidia GPU. You've probably already tried to force your other players to use the Nvidia GPU, that would be my only other suggestion. Oh, make sure non essential processes are shut off. All it takes is one weird app running in the background to ruin a car chase scene after aliens :)

New XPS 15 Owner here. So far it's running well but I have noticed something other owners have written about. The fan will come on and off (I'd say 5+ mins between each cycle) during light load activities (surfing the web for example). I was wondering if that is something that needs to be addressed or if it's just a matter of dealing with the occasional distraction.

    Thanks much

@computress. You can pretty much tweak that out using the built-in Windows 7 power settings. Just do a search on the forums for how to do it. It's there, somewhere.

I set my dpi to 125%, I've set it to 100% and used it like that for a week, now I turned it back to 125% and some icons in the taskbar look messed up, i'm 100% sure it wasn't like this before because only icons that weren't pinned to the taskbar looked messy, now all of them do pinned or not pinned, anyone knows of a solution to this?

I have searched this thread and I can't believe no one else thinks the lack of wake from keyboard or mouse support is a problem. This is a modern laptop and that is such a basic feature that I wouldn't even think to ask if a computer supports it nowadays. Why is no one else concerned with this?

Hmm, not sure, I've tried 125% and it feels like I'm wasting 1920x1080 resolution using it. 100% gives so much more area to work with.

Although 100% looks fine to me I find 125% better. But I found out what the problem was, in taskbar and start menu properties I had 'taskbar buttons: never combine' and this caused the distorted icons in 125%.

I have found the newest norton is an ok one for a paid service much much better than the previous years versions that used to hog memory.

Frankly I have had no problems using the Microsoft freeware (security essentials?) and downloading a malware trial if I notice any system data problems for really tricky bugs that are not defined by a regular anti virus.

I had Mcafee from dell as part of my package but found it missed some basic keylogging malware from time to time also so I dont highly recommend this one.

As far as Ad ware use Firefox and set up the add ons that block all that for the win. I also prefer using the custom browser because you can turn this on and off easier than a seperate program to control web browsing.

Yes in my case no memory problems, no temperature probs, no error reports other than a standard windows error that the nvidia driver stoped working, and the GPU when scanned seemed fine so long as it was not trying to run a game that used high cpu/gpu performance.

They (dell tech support) tried to tell me to just not use the GPU and turn it off when using those games because some games are not compatible. That is not a valid solution as the intel HD graphics will not play nearly as well and hundreds of others have no problems playing games on the same system using the GPU.

I had to escallate my repair issues several times over the phone before they finally agreed to offer repairs. Sadly it still did not fix the issue and now I am waiting for their repair depot to try to fix it after I mailed my laptop in to Dell repair depot.

I just received my xps 15 today. It is refurbished, but it's basically brand new. The 1080p screen is as great as you guys say. Guess you people really meant it : P.

Is there anything I should do on the new laptop? For example how would I know when it is using the 540m instead of the HD3000, and what is a good program to check the temperature of everything.

It also turns out the 9 cell battery is better than I imagined. I had one for a 14" laptop and it was like half the size of it. On this laptop you can barely tell it is there, and it is nice for your lap ! I'm very happy so far.

Of course the B+RGLED is grrrrreat! Was there ever any doubt? [IMG]

You can "whitelist" programs to use the GT 540M and also add a taskbar icon to show which programs are currently active from the nVidia control panel. I also use GPU Monitor Gadget once in awhile to show more in depth usage info.

I use HWMonitor for temp monitoring. My favorite so far.

I love how the 9 cell tilts it forward when on a flat surface and it's still comfortable in the lap as well.

I talked to them this morning. they ran some test and determined that all my hard ware was fine. I think they tested the intel graphics not the NVIDIA card.

Then he also tried to tell me not to play games, and told me about their gaming products. I stopped him before he could go on. So i played less then five minuets of Half-Life 2 over the screen shearing thing just to show him the freeze. It Froze of course.

Then he handed me over to a soft ware specialist and he downloaded, onto my laptop, SuperAniSpyware.

The three minute scan found over five hundred problems. then he tried to sell me their virus removal. I told no, and that i would call later.

So I ran an Avast full System scan that too about two hours and it did not find anything.

Hi, I intend on buying this laptop, and want to know of any common known issues with it before I do.

I've owned a Studio 1557 for a little under 2 years (specs are in my sig), and have had horrendous problems with it. Namely; chronic overheating and shutdowns, severe degradation in the stability and performance of the internal components, and battery duration has eroded to almost nil.

I've had the fan+heatsink assembly and motherboard replaced on 2-3 separate occasions, to no avail. After a couple of weeks, the overheating and performance degradation of the new components begins to set in, without fail. Basically, the Studio 1557 is faulty by design as far as I'm concerned.

So, naturally, before I place an order for the XPS 15, I would like confirmation that its build quality is up to the job, and that these issues have been identified and fixed by Dell.

For your information, the most processor and graphic-intensive applications I generally tend to run on my laptop are Blu-Ray movies and 1080p YouTube videos.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hey guys, just joined the forum for this thread :p

I've had my L502x for a few months now and think it's awesome. I bought for the screen as many others have done.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the SPDIF labelled audio jack. I've heard of some laptops having a jack that is also optical, is this the case with the L502x? I want to connect to my amp for SPDIF but it only has Coax or Toslink. I've used a mono 3.5mm jack to single RCA cable before in these sorts of connections but I'd also read sometimes laptops use a mini-toslink in a 3.5mm jack
