Thanks for the response. Yes, I am looking for how many monitors can be extended from the desktop.

It is good to know that DP uses Intel while HDMI uses nVidia. On my current 1645 there is no integrated graphics so everything goes through the ATI GPU.

I currently have 2 screens setup across 4 physical monitors. I am looking to extend that further with 3 extended screens across 4 physical monitors. However, if I do end up getting a replacement unit L502x, I wanted to see what my options were.

    Again, thanks for the response!

i had considered a USB->video adapter, but I wanted to try to stick to what cables we have available in the office (for cost reasons).

I had thought of hooking up a EVGA UV+ before, but I could never really get my ATI card to properly recognize it. The monitor hooked up to it never showed a resolution higher than 1024x768.

Again, these are all hypotheticals, as I have yet to receive word from Dell Tech Support if I'm getting a repalcemnt mobo for my 1645, or if they're replacing my unit with a 502x

How hot does the L502x get when used on your lap? I'm talking about mild use like browsing and video, rather than gaming.

I'll be running mine with Turbo disabled via power profiles for the most part, so I've no doubt that will help.

I think you mean Internet Explorer, and that is what I did, but I still have that same problem. I even tried Compatibility Mode and that still did not work. Disabling my firewall did not work either.

Try using google chrome, works for me. You don't need any service tag ids... I usually just click the link "select from all dell products" or something... then pick laptops, xps, l502x (xps 15) and it lets me download everything no problem.

Ok I've noticed something rather odd to me, but I was wondering if anyone else is having this same "symptom":

When I view an image or webpage that consists mostly of dark colors (i.e. a black background), it seems that the contrast or back-lighting of my screen dims or something. It's hard to explain, but when I switch from a black themed website to one like this site, I watch my screen brighten back up slowly. I've got the 1080p screen, don't know much about it otherwise...

I get that too, most noticeable when I switch tabs from a youtube video to a white webpage like reddit. Not sure what's going on... but it doesn't really affect me so I haven't looked into it.

I am not talking about driver downloads. I am talking about the My Dell Downloads site where I can download the paid software that came with my computer. I can log into my account and then click "register my system," but it never goes past that screen, but instead goes back to the original screen.

    Question:

My Left facing USB port just came loose and as I was putting a Flash drive in the port, the port popped into the laptop. Now the port is just laying inside the laptop casing and I cannot use it obviously. What can I do to fix this?

You can still probably get better battery life by going into the intel graphics control panel and under the power settings for on battery use balance but then look for "Power Conservation Features" and uncheck "Display Power Saving Technology". I'm not sure how this work along side of your normal windows power savings settings.

Right click on the shortcut/icon and under run with graphics processor it will list default card and an option to switch default or keep default and use card for this session.
Gesture control is on by default- check the quick start guide for a list.

Hello, i've already ask this question in the "teardown thread", but i think here is the better place.

I tore my l502x down and took Thermalright Chillfactor 3. After looping 3d6 3times, temps decreases for 4-5 C°.
    So i played bf3 and temps raised high up to 92°C (2670QM) and 87°C GT 540m (740/925).

Ok, this game is very demanding to the hardware, but that high? Is it normal for bf3 or too high? I played for 1,5 h. Maybe i'll change max. processor level to 99%. Should be enough for this "monster". Or i "do" it again :) and will take now AC MX4 for pasting. What do you guys think ?

    Btw, doesn't the forumsearch work?

    Hi Micmax!

I would change the max processor level to 99%, the impact should be minimal on the game as the GPU is the bottleneck.

I would also reccomend that you download and flash the modded GT 540M BIOS found over on this thread: (Thanks to Captain Kasar and all the crew :D )

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...modded-bioses-download-gpu-voltages-more.html

And download the 0.83/0.85v gpu mod, it should decrease your gpu temps to at least 80C or less and hence have an effect on CPU temp. (As the two share the same copper heat pipe)

    Direct Link:

    L502X_A09_540m_83_85.rar

It is also worth considering doing the re-re-paste (I think I can make out from your post  ) and using the Artic Cooling MX-4 instead. Because those temps seem a little too high, even in comparison to stock cooling.

    Cheers :)

PS: Thread forums search doesn't work for me when I last had a quick look at it.

My Dell L502x has taken a massive dive on performance. Firefox is running slow, desktop graphics are slow, Full HD movies are struggling to run and I can't seem to pinpoint what the issue is.

has anyone else experienced the same issue recently?

    Matix5, thanks for reply,
yes, Cpu and Gpu are sharing the same heatpipe/one small fan and imo this is the main reason for heat- and noiseproblems in all XPS. Ok, but a solution with two bigger heatpipes and two fans would make the XPS series much more expensive.
We all know, Dell wants to sell the expensive alienwares which have a much more complexe cooling. :)

In the meantime i've read some pasting reviews; Thermalright CF3 and MX4 are on the very same level. Maybe when i upgrade my screen to FHD i'll do the re-repaste.
I'll study these Bios-Mods. This seems to be an easy way decreasing temps for some C°.

Btw, there is a smaller chip under the i7 which is also covered by the end of the heatsink (pad, no paste). What chip is it?

When I go to this web page EAC Guides my processor use jumps to 95%-99%, so of course the fan kicks into high.

When that page loads, Java applet/plugin loads. Is Java so poory behaved that it monopolozies all processor power, or does this web page use particularly badly written Java code?

This happened to me, but it was the right usb/eSata combo port.
Opened a case with Dell on jan 23th. As it was not something in the script, they asked me to send some pictures. My usb port was sunk 5 to 6 milimeters into the notebook. 16 days later, with no answer whatsoever, and people telling me that the Analyst was too busy, I´ve got my answer. Misuse! They told me that the connector could not slide in, as it was soldered. After a long fight, and having to quote to Dell a few of the brazilian laws, they replaced the motherboard. The right usb/esata combo port is fixed in the motherboard. The other two usb 3.0 ports are in a separate module.

It has a metal case, that is soldered into the board. But inside of it, is a piece of abs plastic it seems, and this piece slided in. It seems to be fixed inside this metal case either by glue or pressure. As it slides in, it bend the metal connectors, L shaped, so it could cause a short circuit in the connector. In my opinion, thats a problem with the connector, a manufacturing problem. So if this happens to any of you, you know that you have the right to a replacement.

    Best regards,

    MaptaN

No Bitcoin plugin that I'm aware of, certainly never consciously installed it. If you mean in my browser, when I check "Manage add-ons" in Internet Explorer, there is no Bitcoin entry shown.

    There are two Java entries:

    Java Plug-in SSV Helper
    Java Plug-in 2 SSV Helper

My Wi-Fi card (Intel Centrino 1000) has lately been failing to remember Wi-Fi networks that it has previously connected to. For example, when I hook up to the local community college's network, I have to manually click on the network in order for it to connect (it is an open network, so I don't need a password). Then when I come home and connect to my home Wi-Fi network, I have to click on the network and then enter my password the first time I connect after being connected to the previous network.

Has anyone else had this problem? I have the latest drivers from Dell's site.

    Hey there Folks,
First of all.... what a great Forum!!

A couple of questions about my L502x I hope you can help me with...

    1. I seem to be having a problem ripping CD's using the Bluray Drive, the file that is saved has glitches and audio drop out! I have tried various different programs (audiograbber etc), bit rates, reinstalled drivers and updated Bios and drive firmware but problem persists. Although.... I can rip CD's using external DVD drive with no glitches what so ever!!! Laptop plays Blurays great with no probs, any ideas how to get rid of glitches?

    2. I want to fit a Hspa Wwan Pcie card to the laptop, solely for the GPS functions, unfortunetly this Laptop doesnt have the 2 sets of antenna's inside, just the wifi ones! Does the GPS part of the cards use the Antenna's , if so how hard is it to fit them? Which card is best?

    Ta very Much

I have installed the generic Intel Drivers (August Release). I think that they are only really of benefit if you actually play games on the IGP, I haven't noticed any change in anything so IMO it's up to you if you want to install them or not.

I am not sure about Intel's numbering scheme, as the 15.2.2.50 from Intel translates to being 8.15.10.2509 driver version  vs. latest Dell 8.15.10.2342 driver version.

If you are going to install the standard Intel drivers, first you need to remove the current Dell installed version. (Naturally, the display will go black ;) so you will need to restart by the power button)

Bleh, bothers me that I have the 540M inside but it uses the intel 3000 more often. (evidently while playing Killing Floor)
