Dell XPS L501x LCD Display Swap

How many people have successfully installed one of the 1080p screens in their XPS L501xs?

 

Are the instructions and/or screens/cables exactly the same for the L502x?

 

Almost 5 persons including me. You can see the details in the same thread.

 

I think the number is even higher... 5 people were actively posting but I think the number can go up as high as 10, maybe more.

You'll find all the info you need in this thread, believe me. I did my swap early this week and it was all thanks to this community. One of the members even sent me a ribbon cable that was impossible to find here where I live (Colombia). Thanks so much FPetersonIII !!

By the way... I'm almost sure you won't regret from doing the swap. I thought that the final result, aside from the resolution increment, was going to be more subjective than something else. But I put some definitely non-techie users to compare my Samsung 26'' TN-LCD with my B156HW01 V7 and they didn't have to think for more than 0.5 seconds which one was better. I'm not overstating... I swear !

 

I just received my V.4 today and finished installing.
All I can say is... WOW... I thought my 23" desktop monitor looked good.

I actually have 1x FHD cable left in stock if anybody out there is still desperate for one. You can get it through the site. I don't know if I will have any more of these in again after this, unless I get enough people asking me as I have to get them produced as a bespoke order.

Hi Mart,

You can try emailing the various eBay sellers individually to ask them if they have the B156HW01 V4 screen in stock but you have to make sure you tell them that you don't want a compatible model.

Alternatively, if I can get 4 people who say they want one, I will order some more in. I also have another customer who I wasn't able to satisfy from the last round of screens as the suppliers sent me 1x cracked screen (grr!) so he may also want one still.

Can we get 2 more people who are interested?????

Would you need the cable too then Mart??

Hi Mart,

If you are getting the L501x then the cable will most likely not be suitable for the full-HD screen (I think there are 4 connectors missing so it can only output in 720p). You will need to check the cable yourself to confirm this but the sticker on the cable should say 'LVD6 cable FHD'. If it says this, you DO NOT need another cable. If it is not the LVD6 cable FHD then you will need the full-HD cable for the screen to work.

The price of the B156HW01 V4 screen will be between £110-£120 (delivered) depending how many people want one...I have to pay volumetric shipping charges so the price comes down the more screens we include in the order.

If you need the cable as well, I do a bundle for £140. This is really good value as Dell UK were asking £70 just for the cable alone (although I don't think you can get hold of the cable anymore in the EU due to it being discontinued).

This is the genuine B156HW01 V4 of course and not a crappy LG alternative and the cables are from the same factory that Dell buy from, so you won't be sent a cheap alternative.

Just a heads up, I replaced my screen and used a new HD cable, it booted up fine but the screen showed some weird colors and a vertical blue line in the middle of the screen, a quick trip to Dell to update the graphics card drivers fixed it, good luck!

For those of you who ordered the B156HW01 v4 from twscreens.com, do you recall about how long it took to get a response from Helen?

 

She doesn't sell the V4... it's the V7 (glossy) that she sells.

If she doesn't answer in 24 hrs, resend the email. She also has MSN: chiang_helen (at) hotmail.com. I added her to my contact list and she accepted, though I didn't had to talk that way.

I've just changed my screen for the B156HW01 v4 and all I can say is wow, it's just amazing and the matt finish almost completely eliminates reflection. The colour reproduction is fantastic and puts my Vaio 1080p display to shame.

Have to say a big thanks the [email protected] (Barlow00) for what can only be described as amazing service. Removed all of the hassle and then some from sorting this out

Definitely worth it. You won't have to deal with ebay sellers and their misleading "compatible" screen BS or iffy service from Chinese distributors.

about two or three days to response me, but then all was very fast, when she have noticed for the wire transfer the screen was in Spain (my home) in two days, about 8-10 days all the process.

Yeah....I do them both for £140 + P&P if you are not in the UK (£15 EU/£20 ROW).

I have 3 more cables on the way from Taiwan and this is definitely the last 3 cables I will be getting as even the factory won't produce them anymore for me and Dell UK/EU are all out!!!

As for the screens, I can order 5 this week if I get two more interested parties and I will have them within 7 days so can ship next week (assuming the cables arrive by then).

Does anyone know of any suppliers selling the matte screen still? I've got the cash for this upgrade now, and can't find what I really want. I already bought the cable, I figured those might be hard to come by later

I bought it from Dell US Parts a while ago.

Are people having trouble getting the cables still? My company is an authorized Dell reseller, if everyone is having trouble getting these cables I could see if I could get some through my reseller channel.

DONT buy from laptopscreens.com. Stinkin site says "Our company distributes genuine B156HW01 V.4 laptop screens of the unsurpassed quality". Sent me a POS LG screen :lp156wf1 (tl) (f3)

 

Yeah, I have had similar issues with them in the past too. These days, I just go directly to Taiwan for the panels.

On my 5th dell rep. This one happily sold me the cable for 11 bucks (12 bucks shipped!) after the others all told me it can not be sold. I was tempted to buy about 10 of em and resell em on ebay since they are $35 a pop on there lol.

I'll try to get in touch with Dell UK and maybe they will sell me one but apparently the item is oos in UK/EU.

 

I wouldn't count on it. They have to have some way to fix warranty repairs. Display ribbon cables are a common wear item. I've replaced a few for people in my day. "OMG my screen looks all funky!" is it cracked? nope? its ribbon cable!

 

I'm having a heck of a time tracking a screen down now. Laptopscreen agreed to refund me but now I can't find a real one to buy anywhere lol. I know they should cost about 120 in the US but am willing to pay a "little" extra since they are hard to find. Mythlogic said they have some but they want just a bit less than dell.

 

just spent 30 min on the phone with Dell parts

they couldn't find the 0V73D3 part, seems it is V73D3 now. (no zero)

price was $12 and $7 shipping, they wouldn't give me a deal on shipping.

I ordered a L502x, and the matte B156HW01 V.4

total for XPS 15 and new screen came out to $950 or so including taxes, I had a barebones configuration with bluetooth and back lit keyboard added. Tried to get the guy to knock off a little but all he did was try to upsell me.

I'll let you all know how it all goes with the L502x in a few weeks when I get everything

 

Just replaced the screen using the instructions from here and Dell.

The quality is amazing, so much better than the old 720p panel!

Can you, please, provide a few screenshots from your new setup? i did order B156HW01 V.4 screen from ebay and fullhd cable from kuzotronic and it should arrive in 2-3 weeks period... i'll post my results, for sure
