Hohlraum, so the 500gb hhd is also on back order? And if I don't receive an email from Dell regarding a delay, does that mean my order is on track?

 

Apple does the same thing when it comes voiding your warranty if you install your own RAM, despite their much-vaunted and praised warranties and customer service. I think everyone does that. I know my dad has that experience with Apple specifically, where he tried to get his laptop fixed a couple years ago, and after he sent it in they found the third-party RAM and sent it back, saying that he had to remove any third-party components before reporting problems. Apparently if there are *any* third party components the original company can just say those are the cause of whatever technical issue you're having. Sucks, but makes some sense.

All the horror stories on here, and my issues in general with Dell, are a HUGE reason why I canceled with them. In addition to discovering that their default graphics card on the XPS 15 was utterly inadequate and worthless for the strength of the system they were selling. I'm so glad I bought an Asus instead. Especially since I had ordered a 500GB HD as well - odds are I was never going to get it, judging by your experience Hohlraum!

The funny thing, the business division for Dell has a *really excellent* reputation. My father deals with them, and sings their praises constantly. I personally talked to the Dell business rep he deals with, who was an amazingly nice and intelligent guy. He apologized to me profusely for how awful the consumer division was - apparently, the business guys at Dell consider the entire consumer division, especially the CSRs, to be an absolute joke. He was just embarrassed that they gave the company he worked for such a bad reputation.

 

I actually only went with the 6gb and one less hard drive. I also got close to $400 off because they were having a better deal at the time. I just hope I get all four slots.

 

Interesting that you can order an Alienware M17x 3D with i7 2820QM processors, 16 gig of RAM, GTX 460M graphics card and 2X 750GB 7200 harddrives today and have an EDD of 11 May, with no indication of delay on any of the components. Is an Alienware machine that different from an XPS17 that it would not have the same problems with 16 gig of RAM?

However the build time decreased to 10 days...

For the 640 GB HDs, thats like a month behind since it excludes weekends.

 

Dell won't say a word to you until your EDD comes and the machine is not ready to ship. They will continue to extend it by 1 week every week indefinitely.

 

Yes they are different systems. I don't know if Alienware systems are built in the same locations as Dell systems or not.

I think I'm just going to wait until the summer to get a new system. Looks like Intel is already getting ready to release a new chipset (not CPU) in the next 2 months.

 

I normally tell everyone to buy Dell. Never again. I'll just have them go with HP. I'm also going to investigate HP heavily next time we get ready to replace all our datacenter machines as well. HP directly supports the Linux distro we use where Dell does not.

See my previous post. My original EDD was like 4/7/11 but then it got moved to 4/21/11. Just received a shipping notice email last night for it. Still nothing on my laptop.

 

What a joke!!! was e-mailed my one year service plan last night. the effective date is 3-20-11 (the day i ordered it!!!) my EDD for the laptop is still 5-4-11!!! how can you call it a 12 month service agreement when the first sixty days you will not have the laptop, of course assuming my EDD does not get pushed further!

 

It did from this morning, however the lower build time could mean one of two things...

1) Everyone is cancelling their orders.
2) They, meaning Dell, put more people on staff to handle the extra load.

Either way, we don't know. My account rep took a look at my order and saw no issues, so its just parts delay at this point. Granted I just place my order on the 11th, but still - I hope we get all of ours soon.

 

strange, I tried configuring another xps 17 and when i switched from the 550m to the 555m, it reduced the build time by 5 days from 5/4/2011 to 4/29/2011.

 

And so it is done. Canceled.

FYI, CSR mentioned that the Motherboard is back-ordered now as well. ETA 4/21.

 

One thing I did notice when doing the options now (verify if the price changed any) - the 640GB HD opinion has been removed and left only with 2x 640 GB.

 

So was there any attempt to change your mind, or any sign of caring at all? So what are you going to do now? I have been learning from your experiences! I have started perusing the Alienware M17 page to see if that might be an alternative, and it sounds just like a mirror of here...EDDs getting pushed back into May and people cancelling their orders. Do you think Mr Dell might catch on to this, or are they so big league now that they don't give a flying fig about the individual customers who made them who they are???

I'm going to wait until the G74 from ASUS comes out in a couple/three months.

It also mentions that the delay time excludes weekends. So 20 days really means a month.

 

I saw that too...so either wait or get something else...I dunno.

After reading this thread, it appears to be a hit or miss in regards to shipment dates.

I wonder what are the chances of getting mine in time, even though there is currently a 10 working day waiting period for the GT555.

I ordered it 4/11 with a EDD of 5/10. So that was around 4 days ago, give or take a few hours.

Went to this forum and was reading about people complaining that they had to wait sometimes up to 10 days to get their new PCs!!! They have a pretty neat thread about Which Laptop Should I Buy where you can give the general specs you want, and some pretty savvy guys make suggestions about which brands and models may be best suited to your needs. Already posted my desires in the hope of getting an alternative to Dell. After already waiting for 7 weeks since ordering my XPS17, I can not see any reason why I am still waiting another 6 weeks for the same delivery date as somebody who orders one today. I guess my original order was non-existent for the first 7 weeks, and I guess Dell does not care about prioritizing based on ordering date...beware recent orderers!

 

It seems as though the 555m is only delayed for xps17 3D systems and not the regular xps17. Are the 555m and the 555m with optimus different pieces of hardware?

 

Interesting, I didn't see that before. They could be two different part numbers and they underestimated the demand for the 3D version. However, as others pointed out, it could be a RAM issue with the main board itself and they are trying to address it.

 

Well its been a few days since this thread was active, so I was wondering how is everyone's order? Mine is still "In Production" since 4/11/2011 - so 6 days or so ago.

 

Mine has been "in production" since march 19, and I still have an EDD of may 4. Only 17 more days I believe.

Well I topped everything out except for the ram, 6 gb, so that may be the reason why it is taking so long.

 

Mine has been "In Production" since April 4. EDD still April 26.

However, if I spec out a new system with the same specs, the EDD is May 27th. I talked to a sales rep to find out why that would take so long, and he said it was due to a 1-month backorder on the 640GB 7200RPM SATA drives. I asked him if this would affect existing in progress orders, and he didn't know, but did confirm that they are completely out of stock on that drive.

 

This better not delay mine; I will be mad. I've been waiting forever; however, when I talked to my sales rep he said I was only holding on my ram and graphics card, but that was like two weeks ago when he told me that. I'm going to call tomorrow and ask where it is at because it should be in the build stage by now seeing how I have only 2 weeks tell it should ships out.

 

How do you get assigned a rep who can provide that kind of information? When I call, I get someone in India who puts me on hold for 5 minutes and then reads, word-for-word, the same information I can see on my Order Status page.

 

Well when I ordered mine, I called and talk to a rep that specialize in the xps system. So everytime I have a question, I call him and he helps out alot.

 

Ordered 3/18. Still shows "In Production". EDD is 5/3 (because they gave me next day shipping ) otherwise it would still be 5/5. Seriously considering canceling on Monday (would be the 30 day mark).

 

Well, luckily for me I cancelled the order and replace it when there was a 3 days wait on the 640 GB. Other than that, my 3D XPS 17 is pretty spec'd out, but only with 6GB of RAM as well.

My rep told me to contact him Monday and he will let me know how everything is going. Also, to be on the safe side, I contacted our corporate sales contact, and he looked at the order too for me.

Too bad they can't just send all the pieces to you and you could put it together yourself.

The screwed up thing is that the delays are in business days....

So 10 business days is two weeks, but when I ordered it wasn't a two week delay, only 3 day delay. So does that mean I'm in the 3 day category, or 10 day...?

 

yeah i thought about canceling, but i didn't want to take the chance of them getting my order and if there was a delay, they may possibly delay the newer one and not the older one; however, by the look of all the post it is all about luck not a "first come first serve basis." i am just going to wait it out tell my EDD and hope Dell does not let me down (first time ordering from dell by the way.)

About your question, realistically you should be in the 3 day category, but like i said it doesn't look that way. hopefully well get our by our EDD. That is all I'm asking.

A rep from dell called today. Basically told me they're still experiencing delays but its not the harddrive causing the delay but the motherboard. Thats a new one since I was told the only thing holding up my laptop was the harddrive. They're so full of bull its maddening.

I honestly think I will have my baby before I get the laptop... I even told the rep this over email and he said "well, you can watch your other baby via the order status page"... odd and spooky at the same time

On another note, if I don't get the laptop by the time the baby is born, I will cancel it and get something else. For all I know it will come in two months from now and heck, maybe it will even be cheaper cause of other sales and etc.

Actually, something did change. They removed the stand-alone 640gb 7200rpm drive altogether. It's not even an option on the ordering page any longer. After emailing [email protected], I got a call back from corporate today and they confirmed the part is completely out of stock. They're investigating whether they can change my order without having to cancel it and place a new one. This is really getting aggravating.

 

I was told you couldn't, that is why when I saw the delay for the 640 GB HDs hit 3 days I cancelled my order and went for the 2x 500GB. Now the darn motherboard is on back order for 2 weeks, so I dunno what to do.

The new Alienware systems are about to hit, but I could be in the same boat as before.

 

Mine arrived on the 10th April with 2 x 640 GB disks, 3d Glasses, Blu-Ray drive & 6Gb Ram. Mine was ordered on the 30th of March as an upgrade and was shipped from China. I must of got mine just before the disk shortage.

So they don't ship from TN/TX like they used to anymore, or are you talking about where it was built?
