wait a second, are we SURE the motherboard is on backorder or is it really just the 3GB GPU that is part of the motherboard and a rep just got confused. Nowhere in this link does it mention motherboard specific issues.

Find a Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Server, Printer, Software, Service, Monitor or TV at Dell.

I was told awhile ago (April 5th) the only part holding up my laptop was the 640GB harddrive. I even posted to such in this thread. Yesterday he told me the motherboard/graphics card (550m) had been the reason for the delay since 'March 29th'. I ordered on March 18th.

but this is still leaves open my question. when some are being told the motherboard is delayed, is it really just the 550m 3gb GPU that is delayed or is it the actual motherboard. meaning, if you have the 1gb will there be no delay?

The video card is on/integrated to the board. So therefore both would be delayed.

    Longer delays...

    Video Card
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics 11 days
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with TV Tuner 11 days
    Hard Drive
    1.28TB (2 x 640GB 7200 RPM HDD) 21 days
640GB 7200 RPM SATA HDD with 256GB SSD Dual Drive 1 days

However, the build time has been reduced to 9 days...

I am about to cancel if it goes up one more time.

I ordered the 550m though and thats whats suppose to be holding up my laptop. So why isn't that listed as being delayed?

I heard back from their Resolution department today. The story she gave me is that they are now completely backordered on 500gb and 640gb 7200RPM hard drives, and they don't know when they will be back in stock. Additionally, there are "issues with the the motherboard" for certain XPS 17" configurations and that mine was affected. She couldn't elaborate on what that meant or what the time impact would be on my order.

At this point, they're offering to let me cancel my order, but I don't have any better options. I plan to watch for deals and cancel as soon as I find something.

Am thinking about canceling my order. Was looking at the following laptop:

    Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV10x for $1199.00.

Same processor, memory, harddrive. Has Wimax (no biggie) and 3D which I didn't order with my XPS 17.

Cons: Lower resolution as 15.6 and not 17"; 540m and not 550m?; No JBL 2.1 audio though does have Harmon Kardon?; 6 Cell battery and not 9 cell

    Any thoughts?

Things are getting a bit better, or even worse, depending on how you look at it:

Build time went down one day to 8 days (from 15 or so a week before), and the video card delay went down by 1 day to 10 days. However the 640 GB HD delay has hit 22 days :/

    Video Card
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics 10 days
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with TV Tuner 10 days
    Hard Drive
    1.28TB (2 x 640GB 7200 RPM HDD) 22 days
640GB 7200 RPM SATA HDD with 256GB SSD Dual Drive 2 days

Got email today that my order has been delay.
    Order date: 3/31
    EDD: 4/22
    Now: 5/2
I had feeling my order would be delay after I place my order and came across this site.

You should read the HP forums here, specifically threads on their Pavilion dv6t, dv7t, which are direct competitors for the XPS line.

On Dell's website, my order status says "Ship Complete". Does that mean it is on its way or shipping is actually complete and the laptop has been delivered to some other address?

Wow...this is interesting and ironic. I placed an order for a AW m17xR2 on outlet around 1PM today. So a few hours go by and during my next break I refresh the order for the XPS since I was going to call and cancel the XPS.

Sure enough, its in "Finalizing Production," which from my understand will ship any moment now :D Plus the AW just shipped...LOL... :/

So now since I have two coming to me - which one do I pick?...LOL

This goes to show everyone - patience is a virtue...now like I said, I need to figure out which one to send back. The AW is nice and has a nice build quality, however the XPS is the same, but flexes in a few areas. Both will have warranty with complete care.

Damn, I was hoping you had the 640gb hard drive. I've been begging them to let me swap it out for the 500gb, but they won't do it without cancelling the order and placing a new one. I had over $400 in discount coupons that have all expired, so I would pay around $200 more for a lesser laptop if I re-ordered today with the available coupons.

    That stinks :(

It was the second day of my original order, now cancelled, that I realized the 640 GB drives were going to be on back order (was only a 3 day backlog at the time). So I cancelled the order and placed it again with the 2x 500GB drives.

I received a call today that my order entered the build sub-stage. According to the rep, the 640gb drives are back in stock. This seems to be supported by at least a couple of people in other Order Progress threads reporting systems with 640gb drives being shipped overnight last night.

    Here's to hoping.

Ha, I just cancelled my order today with the 640 GB drive and reordered it with the 2x 500GB drives. The difference in price was minimal for the extra drive ~$25 and I wanted the extra space. That cut the EDD by ~ a week. I think they have more of the 500 GB drives. But you never with these estimated dates as can been seen by this thread.

Well, my glasses just shipped and they should be here by Saturday or so (Fedex Home). So now I just have to wait for the XPS, which is still in "Finalizing Production" or "Ship Complete" - whatever those mean....

In the meantime, the AW M17xR2 came and damn, this thing is huge. The build quality is pretty nice and all that horsepower isn't bad either. This is one difficult decision to make :/

Well, I looked ay my order and its still "Finalizing Production", however I looked up my order number in FedEx reference tracking (old trick I learned) and I see its there, but it hasn't been picked up.

Interestingly enough though, it says its being shipped from NJ so I should get it within a day...

I am a total newbie to these forums, and to anything non-Apple in general (please don't hold that against me - what can I say, I'm a sucker).

Saw the Dell XPS 17 on a great deal, it looked alright, and I ordered it on April 1. Of course, I just received my first "updated" EDD (also known as "delays"). My question is: has anyone ordered on April 1 with my configuration (see below) and received their computer yet? I'm thinking my "updated" date is because of the TV tuner graphics card and the 640 GB HD, both which have had significant delays in the past month.

I wish I would have contacted a rep right after I ordered it, because Dell's legendary home division customer service pretty much just reads from the screen when I call. ("Yes, your order is scheduled on or before April 21. There may be delays in shipping. Yada, yada...")

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I ordered your exact same configuration (except 6gb RAM instead of 8) on April 4th. Mine has not shipped yet. I've gotten several different answers, though one rep did tell me that my order began building on April 20th and will ship out on Monday or Tuesday. As I'm finding out, they're prone to inventing answers to get you off the phone, so I don't know whether there's any truth.

As best I can tell, it has been the 640gb hard drive holding things up. Several reps have told me that they are now in stock, and I've seen a couple of people in the XPS 15 order progress thread reporting that their orders w/ that drive have shipped in the past few days. So I'm fairly optimistic my order will ship by early next week.

I don't think 2 extra gigs of RAM should warrant a delay in my order...

TV, thanks for the link! But alas: "IN PRODUCTION."

I can't believe that someone who ordered on 4/4 got it today! While that's good for him/her, it's really starting to suck to be me.

When you get yours, TV, could you give us a full report? And thank you very much for helping out a newbie.

No problem. I'm a newbie too.

I wonder if mine was shipped sooner because they "expedited" it. You may want to try calling to complain about the wait time and ask them to expedite your order. Also, you should be able to get your shipping upgraded to Next Day at this point. They upgraded my shipping without hesitation once the original estimated ship date had passed.

Well, my glasses finally came, however no XPS yet. I do have a tracking number, but it's going no where fast:

    "Shipment information sent to FedEx"

Been like that since the 20th :(

I made a little unboxing video of the glasses at least - its not perfect by any means, but it gets the point across.

I haven't gotten a tracking number yet. I'm guessing FedEx doesn't pickup on weekends. They're about 12 hours ahead, so hopefully we'll see some movement overnight tomorrow night. I'm guessing I won't receive mine by Monday, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Tuesday.

Just curious, did anyone ever get a tracking number and nothing happened with it? Then Dell couldn't find the package so they built you a new machine...

I guess I am getting paranoid with all these orders going directly to the "Shipped" stage from "Finalizing Production" pretty quickly :/

Mine shows "Ship Complete" on the purchase summary page, but shows "Finalizing Production" on the Order Details page. I'm guessing that means they've boxed it up but FedEx hasn't picked it up yet.

I've been lurking the thread since I ordered on 4/14, and it just updated to "Ship Complete" on one page and "Finalizing Production" on another. I was curious and wanted to see what the phone status would say, and it said it was shipped on April 28th (lol).

Awesome! You and I have been waiting forever. I ordered a day after you. I wonder if we will get it some time next week?

Anyone else have a tracking number? It could be found by either calling, or by looking up your order number in the reference field @ fedex.

Those who have it, where does it say it being shipped from? I am in NJ and mine apparently is being shipped from NJ. I asked a EPP rep about this and he said that we have ship centers in a number of states. Granted he could mean fedex, but who knows.

No way mine is going to be here tomorrow...but I didn't think it would.

Besides a number of people have had orders in for a while and still have no computer
