    well said dude
Entering password is far more better than giving away 20$

i think it should be free of cost
which as far as i remember was free in some laptops ;)

    It's true, but don't panic!

It will run in dual channel mode for the first 2GB of RAM on both sticks, and will be a little slower on the remaining 2GB. This will be slower by only 5% or something.

    For more knowledge, look here.

Can anyone share any insight into how long it usually takes Dell to release coupons on new models or how often they release coupons the XPS models at all?

I see entries for both the L502 and the L702, but I can't access either of them. How are you grabbing them?

All else being equal, a 17" panel regardless of 3d will use more power than a 15.6" panel. Not much, but still more. Meaning it's quite possible we will see slightly better numbers on the L502X than AT achieved when they tested a sandy bridge 2820QM with a 17" LCD panel.

Does the XPS 15 have SATA 3.0 so we actually benefit from the performance gains of the new 6 GB/s Vertex 3's?

    Because after reading this:

    OCZ's Vertex 3: Second-Generation SandForce For The Masses : Meet OCZ?s Vertex 3

the 3 GB/s version doesn't really seem worth it.

    Here r my specs:

    i7-2720QM
    8 GB ram
    640 HD
    geforce GT 540M 2gb
    1080p
    Bluray read DVD write
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 & Bluetooth 3.0
    backlit keyboard
    6 cell battery
    1 year basic plan warranty

    total $1553 w/tax

    what you guys think??
is the 8gb ram really necessary or 6 gb is enough??
reason I picked 8 gb is because of dual channel, like someone mentioned earlier it's gonna be slower with 6 gb? can someone explain this please? thanks

    Looks good.
since 6GB has one 4GB DIMM and one 2GB DIMM, it will run dual-channel for the first 4GB (2GB on each) For the remaining 2GB it will run in single-channel mode.

Dell Chat confirmed that the L502x only supports sata II for me. I think we need a more informed and technically oriented representative providing an answer to this question. I hope your right, as I'm looking at the 256GB Vertex 3 or C400 as soon as they come out, but not if I'll never see close to that kind of bandwidth in this laptop.

EDIT: I just looked at the specs. Dell states the L502x ships w/ the intel HM67 chipset. Intel states the HM67 provides support for sata III on internal hard drives and sata II for external. This doesn't mean that dell has to configure the laptop this way and provide support for sata III though. I'm just crossing my fingers it does.

Um... Not going Dell this generation but you know you can haggle with Dell right? Just call them up and ask for a discount, then after they think its settled you can always add EPP on top too. Should be able to get an extra $100 off that way.

That said, I wonder if I can get them to warranty replace my m1530 with a newer machine. I'm going to try to get at least a few replacements out of them before my warranty expires since the machine is running hot and the fingerprint reader no longer works and my hard disk clicks...

Yeah SATA II = SATA 3.0 Gbps SATA III = 6.0 Gbps. So you'd need SATA III to take advantage of the Vertex 3. Not that a Vertex 3 on a SATA II connection would be a slouch, it'd still be a firebreather.

Call and ask. You might even manage to get a discount for not canceling the order if you appear concerned enough about the time it is taking.

Mine was "In Production" right away.

But according to the Order Status descriptions, "Order Processing includes time to process payment. Approval times vary based on the designated form of payment."

So there could be an issue with your payment method.

I just called tech spt, and was told the L502 does support SATA 3 (and that the L702 with 3D screen does support Nvidia Optimus technology, unlike the alienware M17X R3 with the 3D 120Hz screen.)

The tech spt lady didn't know the brand or model of the SSD offered for the L502.

That doesn't make sense, re: 3D screen. Any screen has to be 120 Hz to be a 3D screen. From the Dell blog http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...etails-on-new-xps-15-and-xps-17-laptops.aspx:

"The i7 version now supports Optimus, unless configured with the optional 3D FHD panel on the XPS 17– this uses the discrete GPU full time "

    how does this sound:
    2720QM
    2GB 540M
    6GB memory
    750GB hdd
    1080 panel
    read BD, write CD/DVD
    backlit kb
    6 cell battery
    3 year basic service plan
    $1533.69

    couple questions:
8gb memory worth it? should i upgrade to advanced service plan or will basic cover most what I need? i've had an e1705 (upgrade time, seriously) for a little over 4 years now and never had a spill/bump/lcd damage etc. my understanding is those are what the advanced service plan is for?

    Over here the prices are
    i5 (2.3 to 2.9 GHz) + 766p + GT 540M about USD1090
3 Years XPS Warranty would need a further USD200
    B+RGLED would need USD140
i7-2630QM would need USD65 (no matter, I probably prefer 2 core)

Once again, no high end dual core - i7-2620 - over here (we did not have the i5-560M, only the i5-480M for the old XPS 15). Another good reason why I shouldn't buy this.

In the United States is the pricing similar (website too laggy for me to load at work)? Is the quad i7 a price upgrade from the stock dual i7?

In contrast, my i5-460 (2.53 to 2.8 GHz) + RGBLED + HD 5730 + 3 Yrs XPS Warranty was USD 1125 with the cheapest bag there was.

I ordered myL502 through AAFES, which doesn't offer NBD shipping. When I was calling about the SATA II or SATA III support for the HD, the Customer Care rep offered to send me the OS discs I asked for, and also upgraded me to NBD shipping, withour me even asking. I think they feel bad about the one-month delay from ordering to recieving. (yeah, right)

There's now a $100 off EPP coupon and the L502X is now up on the EPP site (see banner in upper right corner). Brings it down by another $100.

It's now available for pre-ordering in Malaysia. For some reason it's called XPS 15 MLK here.

2820QM is replaced by 2630QM, and the duo core 2620M is replaced by an i5-2410M. 2720QM is available but the upgrade cost to it is simply unbelievable.

So I changed my mind to go for the 2630QM, the same processor the cheaper 15" MacBook Pro is using. Shouldn't be much of a difference right?

Also, they don't give the graphics option of the GT 525M and the GT 540M, just the GT 540M. I'm just a casual gamer, so I was actually still considering between the two, but now I don't have a choice.

Although if given a choice, which one should I pick?

If you select the higher end setup, you will not have the option to pick. This makes sense, because you should want the GT 540M, even if only for lasting a little longer down the road with technology.

Random question on tracking order status on the Dell website, since I haven't ordered from them before: My order status currently reads "In Production," but when I click the "Purchase ID" link, there's no information that shows up under "Order Description", "PO Number", etc. I placed the order on 2/22. Should there be information under those fields?

There won't be anything under "P.O. Number", as you supply that to them for instances of when a business purchases something and needs a reference number to go by. Under "order description", mine says "XPS 15" and that's it. I ordered mine the same day you did.
