Running those normal programs should get you 2.5-3 hours of battery life depending on your settings...aka backlight and such. The computer is very light, lighter than the sxps 13 it replaced. The computer is very sturdy and when taxed, the processor can handle most loads. I've played games on it but the video card is not the best, so if you want to game on the pc this may not be the one for you.

Like everyone else, Dell has offered to replace my M1330 after plenty of issues (5 motherboard replacements, 2 screen replacements, 1 hard drive failure).

Has Dell offered anyone else a full refund? I'm getting tempted, but I've been satisfied with Dell's service (for the most part) these past two years.

I'm having my XPS m1330 being replaced with a Studio 1457. It seems like all of you are receiving a Studio 1458. Do you guys know any differences? The only information I can get on a Studio 1457 is that it contains a Core i7 processor....

    http://dell4laptops.blogspot.com/2009/11/dell-studio-1457-laptop-product.html

I can't confirm any of this. Anyone comment on the differences between 1457 and 1458?

sorry i forgot to mention the heat. I had the xps 1340 prior to this, and it ran a lot hotter than the 1458. It runs very cool compared to that. Hope that helps any.

How did you guys get Dell to exchange your m1330? Did you just ask for one? I'm on my way to a third mobo replacement. The laptop is acting kinda weird. Last time, I sent them an email through xps support and a tech came and replaced the mobo. This time do I just insist it be replaced for a 1457?

I had power issues with mine. When I plugged my laptop into power, the laptop CPU would reach 100% and the computer would freeze. However, when I unplugged my laptop, the laptop would run normally without freezing on battery. I also had buzzing noises that came with my power adapter. I replaced the power adapter 3 times in the past week, and had 2 motherboard replacements. None of which solved the issue. I had to ask them politely to replace my system. At first, they wanted me to send my laptop in to the depot to have a full system checkup, but I couldn't do that since I am in college and do not have a spare laptop to use. After a while, they agreed to replace my laptop.

    Hope this helps!

Make sure you be persistent, but do not be rude or impolite to the CSR.

I would think a jump from an xps m1330 to a studio 14 jump is better than a studio xps 13 to a studio 14. I would preferably argue for a Alienware m15x or a Studio XPS 16. You didn't get as big of a leap as I did. Honestly, the Studio xps 13 looks better than the studio 14. If I were you, I'd try to argue for an alienware or a studio xps 16.

Ya i know its a downgrade but really i need a smaller laptop, not looking for 15 or 16 inch laptops, looking for a 13-14 in laptop, the specs are outstanding compared to my studio xps 13 dont u think? I priced out the same system and its 1600 on dells website, plus its new and my studio xps is refurb and i purchased it a year ago for 751 including tax and shipping from their outlet. what do you guys think?

the specs look good...its up to you whether u would prefer a core i7 or a core i5...core i5 saves more battery life, but core i7 is a better game performer....other specs look good....like how you got a better gfx than i did :D ...maybe try to argue for a backlit keyboard? haha

So my girlfriend has been having gpu issues lately on her 1330.

I've shown her the 1458 series and she doesn't seem to care for the look. If it comes to a system replacement, should I push for a m11x? I don't think this would be a stretch, as the 11x is actually comparable in price. The only other alternative for her is to wait until the 13 series refresh comes out. Which might be a few months.

Prior to this she's had 2 mobo replacements, then a system replacement, then a mobo replacement.

I can be quite persuasive, so if m11x is a possiblity, I'm sure I can angle for it. I just don't know if waiting for a 13 refresh is really the best way to go, as she loves her 1330.

Hey guys a question regarding warranty.

I bought the M1330 from Best Buy in November 2008, I had a mild keyboard issue in January 2010 and the CSR told me that my warranty was up in February 2010.

Now it therefore seems like Dell only gave me an additional three months on the warranty.

What exactly is the warranty position on Dell laptops? Isnt it supposed to be a full year extended warranty on all the M1330s with the defective NVIDIA 8400GS card?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Indeed your warranty for all practical purposes is expired as far as dell in concerned.
Yet you will be covered for one additional year on the main system/motherboard if the GPU fails, keep in mind this only covers the Nvidia gpu not the integrated intel model.
And only for the failure of the GPU, nothing else.

Ok thanks for the clarification cyber16, so that means if my GPU fails I send it back to Dell and it will be replaced. Is there any chance of me getting a complete laptop replacement though?

Im guessing if the GPU failed 3 times then a replacement would be possible. However, im wondering if a replacement with less than that figure is also possible.

u guys know how long it takes for the system to ship? I am getting worried since online, when I tried to configure my laptop with the same specs, the HD 4530 card and the Core i7 processor aren't compatible with each other. I also found some forums online saying that they have video issues because of the combination of the two. I don't want the replacement laptop having these same issues...

Anyone know if it is possible for me to change that? I don't want to call and having risk them cancelling the system replacement and issuing me a refurbed laptop.

where are you looking? what i do is go do dell.com, mouse over "For Home", click on "Laptops and Minis". Mouse over "Laptops & Netbooks", and then under "Studio and Studio XPS Laptops" the first thing to click on is "Studio 14".

I guess someone else had same issue earlier. http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19321591.aspx

I can see only 12 products under studio laptops. What I did: dell.com>mouse over home> laptop and minis> check studio laptops

yeah, I see studio 14 .. when i select shop before making other selections. so, its still there.

I was going to get a XPS1340(the XPS13 is sold in sweden) as a replacement for my 1330 that pretty much burns up whenever I try to do something on it(top GPU temp was 99C). I asked to get a LED display on it which wasn't going to be a problem.
I noticed I couldn't customize it with a LED ini the swedish shop and sent a e-mail to them asking them about the LED and saying that if the LED was a problem I could consider moving to a smaller screen such as the m11x.

I was told that the system with the LED had already been accepted and that was what I was getting. I did however get a mail some days ago telling me that the LED-screen wasn't avalible for the XPS13 so instead I'm getting the Alienware m11x and I am supposed to be getting some info on the specifications shortly(probably after easter though).

Just wanted to share and all in all I am very happy with the Dell support even though it has taken quite alot of time(first mail was sent to them around december) but this computer works for browsing etc. as long as i keep it elevated :)

    UPDATE:
Just got the specs. I'm getting the SU4100, 4 gigs of ram and a 500gig 7200rpm Hard-Drive- My old XPS had the T8300 2.4ghz, 4gigs of RAM and a 400GB 5400rpm HDD and was bought at the start of fall 2008

Congrats, but dude they should AT LEAST give you the SU7300 processor. The dual core in your XPS still even beats that processor. I would really advise you to call them and ask for that (even if they have to reorder it), because that's ridiculous that they'd give you the lower one.

Well. I thought about trying to get the other processor but since I am already getting a bigger HDD, better RAM and a much better GPU and there is almost no difference between the 2 processors and I need a working laptop soon I'll just go with it and hope to get a somewhat faster delivery. Especially since they will be away and not answering mail during the easter holiday

And since the new computer costs more to purchase form the Dell-store than the 1330 did when I bought it more than 1½ year ago I am more than happy with the replacement.

    No... it's great in REALITY:
    http://consumerist.com/tag/small-claims-court/
    http://consumerist.com/2008/01/suing-big-companies-in-small-claims-court-is-fun-and-easy.html

and here's a good Dell one:
    http://www.in.gov/judiciary/opinions/pdf/02230701cld.pdf

    :D

Small claims is hugely common place, you won't find it on traditional legal search tools (e.g. lexisnexis) for that very reason.

A small update/question on my replacement. I was told that my replacement order was to be placed right before the supporters took the holiday off. When do you guys/gals think I could expect a confirmation from the assembly-department?

I am pretty unhappy as it is with the amount of time it has taken with this whole replacement deal. My first contact with them regarding this errand was taken at the start of the year and it is now more than 3 months in. Would it make any difference if i pointed that out to them?

Has anyone had to replace their M1330 via Dell Complete Care for accidental damage? If so how do they determine the replacement laptop (1330 vs studio xps vs studio 14) and how long does it usually take? Thanks

For those that are getting replacements, how many failures did you have, and who did you contact to get replacements? I have had nonstop heat issues for 2 years and gave gaming completely on my M1330 after my first gpu failure. I had put it on a cooling pad all the time and havent had a fail since. Im getting mobo replaced again this friday since my warranty is expiring soon and needed to make use of it by a new mobo. I had to baby this machine since I bought it, and couldnt use the gpu on how I intended, so do I have a case for a replacement?

I had 2 or 3 mobo replacements before i got the replacement of my system. GPU failures hould have an extended warranty specifically for gpufails.

What I did was that I contacted their techsupport by mail in january or so telling them that the same problem that I have had twice or thrice before has retrned and that this pretty much assures that it is a built-in problem with the system and I was therefore asking for a refund.

They asked if a replacement would be okay and I said it was. the m11x is due to ship on the 23rd. One reason it has taken so long is that I was going to get a sxp13 first which later turned out isn't available with the LED.

    Hi,

I'm on my second GPU failure. Dell has said they will replace the machine but no order has been generated and the overseas support people have been unable to specifically tell me which system I'll be able to get, although it sounds like a Studio 14 of some sort.

Any speculation about what I can expect and might be able to get would be appreciated, and I'll update the forum on anything I learn about what they propose and what it eventually gets replaced with.

    Here's what I have now:

    1 GP457 Processor, T7500, 2.2, 4MB Core Merom, G0
1 NX511 Battery, Primary, 56WHR, 6C Lithium, Dynapack InternationalTechnology Corp
    1 RK533 Hard Drive, 160GB, Free Fall Sensor, 9.5, 7.2K, Seagate Galileo
    1 Y9530 Dual In-line Memory Module 1GB, 667, 128X64, 8K, 200
    1 Y9540 Dual In Line Memory Module 2GB, 667, 256X64, 8K, 200
    1 RW194 Assembly, Dvd+/-Rw, 8X, Panasonic9.5, Slot
1 GX081 Assembly, Cable, Coaxial, Liquid Crystal Display, Light EmittingDiode, M1330
1 RP774 Liquid Crystal Display, 13.3 WXGA, Video Elec. Stds. Assoc. TLF, TRANSFORMER METROPLEX DESKTOP...
1 U8042 ASSEMBLY..., BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP)..., DISCRETE..., 128M, M1330
1 CW725 Card, Wireless, Internal Bluetooth, 355, Windows Vista Os
    1 HX105 Assembly, Palmrest Magnesium-Alloy, W/Fingerprint Reader, M1330
1 N6704 Assembly, Camera, 0.3M Integrated, Manufactured In China, M1330

My main points of consideration are the processor (4MB cache) and the screen. RAM and HDD size aren't that big of an issue although I would prefer a 7200 RPM drive.

I don't really know how this processor stacks up against any of the available offerings, although I didn't see any Studio 14 machines available with 4MB caches.

    - Rob

THe new Core I5 are much faster than T7500 in your laptop, and they save alot more energy. A loaded Studio 14 is a good replacement on paper, but I wasnt impressed by the looks of it. Too much plastic on it, and looked more like a budget laptop.

Can you take any pics comparing the two laptops? How much heavier is the Studio 14? Are you going to keep it or complain to dell that the build quality doesn't match your previous laptop?

Copy that. I'm not super concerned about the styling but I would be annoyed by the lack of someone to answer the phone when I call like I appear to have now with the "XPS Experience" or whatever they call it.

OTOH, hopefully a new machine wouldn't include the all the GPU failures that we're so used to as a part of our XPS experiences :)

I personally still have an M1330. I just had my 2nd mobo replaced but my warranty expires in 10 days and am trying to get a replacement. I have seen the Studio 14 in person, and its pretty lightweight.

I purchased my first M1330 back in 2007 and had nothing but problems with it. After about 4 "major fixes" they replaced the 1330 with a completely new m1330 which worked for a while then had the usually problems. Had the MB/CPU replaced around 6 times.
About a month ago, I called again to have it replaced and they offered to give me a new replacement.

    Old M1330 Specs:
    Dual Core II 2.2
2 GB Ram (I upped it to 4 but will put back to two before sending back)
    250gb 5400 HD
    8 Cell Battery
    LED Backlit LCD
    8400 Video Card
    Etc

    Replacement Studio 14:
    1 224-8082 BASE,NBK,STDO,1458,CTO
    1 312-0976 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    1 313-4783 Integrated High Definition Audio 2.2
    1 313-8452 8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    1 317-3622 Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz (3M cache)
    1 317-3651 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
1 320-8790 14.0 inch High Definition (720p) LED Display with TrueLife and Camera
    1 320-8825 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 512MB
    1 330-6222 Windows 7 Label
    1 330-7423 MOD,MEDIA,DVD,DRVR,RDVD,1458
    1 330-9096 Standard Keyboard
    1 330-9841 Black Chainlink
    1 342-0532 250GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive
    1 421-1737 Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
    1 430-0735 Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Module (2.1)
    1 430-2929 Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini Card
    1 467-0019 Integrated Network Card

The new Studio 14 arrived yesterday and I'm not happy with the size, weight, or look of it. It looks cheap and is much bulkier and heavier than the 1330 and the glossy black shows every fingerprint. The performance seems much better with the newer processor and the screen seems brighter, but I feel like I have been downgraded as it doesn't have the feel of an XPS system.

Any suggestions on what I should do? There don't seem to be any comparable replacements for the 1330 and I really don't want a 16" laptop.

I'm surprised they only gave you an i3 and only 3 gigs of ram? If you aren't happy with the aesthetics then you should complain and ask for a refund or maybe an alienware. Do you have any pics of the m1330 and studio 14 side by side btw?

Will they give a refund when the original purchase was in Aug 07? The dang thing was over $2k back then.
I haven't seen any alienware comps in 13" or 15".

I can snap a few photos for you...

Not sure about the refund but say that you won't accept the studio 14 as you think it's inferior in build quality and cheaper than what you initially paid for your xps. There's an alienware m11x but the cpu is kind of weak. There's also a m15x but it might be too big and bulky for you.

Created a gallery in Picassa but it won't let me post links to external sites b/c I don't have 15 posts. You will have a link in your PM box.
They look really similar in the photos but the 1458 is thicker and bulkier and the glossy cover is terrible. Also, notice how the batter makes it sit up much taller.
The 14" screen is wider and not taller. The width isn't really usable for most applications that I use so the "larger" screen is actually smaller.
I definitely wouldn't say that the 1330 has good "build quality," but definitely feels better.

Actually couldn't find where to send you a PM. Either you have to have more posts for it to be enabled or they don't have it. Send me an IM to justinmsaim or justinmw on google talk
